This is such a crazy submarine system! I feel like the reason the Russians have built this is because they can. Whether or not there is an obvious immediate need or advantage to these submarine systems, the only way to keep up expertise in building and operating these things is to keep on making and operating them.

Russian MOD explicitly explained why this new torpedo class was developed. They are not hiding this aspect and purpose. Apart from being a reliable "second-strike" element, it also offers difficulty in both detecting and neutralising. Consequently this can be both a defensive tool and an element of "first strike" or "preventative strike" component. So it is a multi-purpose, multi-role tool. And they are not hiding why they developed this new class of weapon. The main reason is NATOs expansion to Russian borders and direct threats posed to existing "deterrent". So, it is both logical and rational move to ensure effective umbrella against aggressors such as NATO. Disclosed technical info also includes arming this torpedo with "cobalt charge" as well as other variations.

I have a theory, The belgorod's loshark, has a secondary function besides espionage. It is meant to dive extremely deep and recovery a spent or deactivated nuclear powered torpedo. Say the russain deploy the weapon debace they fear nuclear escalation, to generate second strike capability in case russia itself, and its other traditional nuclear delivery systems, are destroyed. But war is averted, and well you can't exactly back this huge torpedo back into its tube, like regular test torpedos you need someone to go dive down and recover it. Hence loshark.
Yeah, but you can tell the Poseidon to drive itself into the White sea, come to the surface and stop there or sink to the relatively shallow bottom. No need to unnecessarily risk that weapon getting into adversary hands.

Soviets/Russians have long had deadmen switches for their arsenal and there have been instances where the computers were wrong. Having a human in the loop might be a sanity check that gets discarded if Russia is at war.

Poseidon is a fleet killer. It can manouver itself into a position deep below a carrier battle group and effectively take it out enirely without having to worry too much about countermeasures, interception, fallout, etc. Theoretically it could capsize anything above it and leave nothing on the surface but bubbles.

A fleet is spread out over 25 if not 50 miles. Even if it was a 100 megaton it's not going to take out the whole fleet. You're going to get the carrier for sure, but the battle group is still going to be floating.
@@otm646 If it took out the Carrier, honestly that'd be more than enough. Not only the fleet have lost it's projection power, but keep in mind Carriers has a crew size of a small town.

@ 20:30 ish, I'd argue that the carrier strike group attacking feature of Poseidon is one of it's main functions, alongside its tactical coastal strike one.
Consider that the nuclear warhead is used in more than one way, and tsunami generation is one of the primary attack uses ie very effective at coastal destruction and human life loss, and overwhelming ships with artificial waves.
Furthermore the detonation of a large nuclear weapon below a carrier ground(100m's below) would initially generate devastating pressure waves(killing all humans nearby and damaging naval structures), but more importantly the vapourisation of the surrounding water, combined with the pressure waves and cavitation would greatly reduce any regional water bouyancy, so in effect it is an optimised weapon for this role, especially considering its AI control.

Yeah the pressure from even a small nuclear weapon near a single ship, within 50-100 meters would probably capsize any ship. Certainly even a single kiloton direct hit in the right spot would sink any aircraft carrier. A 200 Megaton explosion in the center would capsize the entire battlegroup and destroy any submarines nearby. 200 megatons underwater would be fucking insane.

Have you considered the Belgorod's "torpedoes" are not true torpedoes at all. But rather nuclear powered drones. Designed to be deployed and loiter/linger indefinitely until recovered by the Loshark (or similar daughter sub).
Seems like based on name alone and its capabilities fleet killer is potential. Launch it from safe range, let it move to areas where enemy fleet, or valuable targets like aircraft carriers is moving, it can loiter or wait in way of the fleet and detonate when below it, sinking whole fleet by creating explosion below the ships and due energy release void would sink or capsize any ship too close to it. Imagine whole fleet deleted by one weapon.
doubtful it would deploy like this, target identification would be messy and communication potentially hard. you dont want to hit a tanker or carrier in peace time, and once fired i doubt communication be be easily maintained without indicating its location.

Russia knows it will always be outnumbered at sea so this makes even a small fleet a threat to a larger cbg. For e.g. during the 1971 Bangladesh war of Independence, Task force 74 was about to enforce a no fly-zone over India but the presence of a smaller Soviet fleet(with a nuclear sub) drove up the risk factor and the cbg did not get involved.
Considering how strained is Russia's military budget, I bet they're thinking of various use options to milk value out of such an expensive engineering feat.

The size and depth of Poseidon would suggest its primary ability is not to attack surface vessels. It is more likely that a massive underwater detonation off the coast of California could trigger an earthquake and also a tidal wave to take out a large part of the west coast or a similar attack on NYC.

Poseidon is an autonomous, AI-capable, nuclear-reactor powered weapon which once launched, can patrol the oceans on its own indefinitely, or lay low for years in the deep, evading detection. If a few dozen are released, then for the enemy sailing the oceans is a huge risk - its like walking on a minefield where the mines have brains and can corner you.

I think Belgorod is a poseidon carrier with the goal of making sure no navy can aproach Russia. In their propaganda Poseidon is an antonomous torpedo that can lie in wait or patrol for years but I think they are much too scared of it being hacked stolen or just malfunctioning to operate it like that. In all likelihood they will carry it on the Belgorod and release it for direct attack or ambush of an entire fleet battle group. Its large enough to carry a nuke of any size so we really are talking taking out an entire fleet and it need only be stealthy enough to hide its launch point and get close enought to the fleet for it to be unable to dissperse when it enters final aproach at top speed. While such an attack would kill tens of thousands it will only kill soldiers and cannot be mistaken as an attack on the population like a balistic missile lauchned at a fleet could. Basically saying yeah we took out your navy now you cant invade us. What are you gona do nuke our cities you know what happens next right?

I remember the timing when Status-6 news started to appear on Russian TV. It was always in connection with US Prompt Global Strike doctrine and NATO's anti-missile systems in Europe. The "leak" had that exact timing, when we were opposing constuction of "anti-Iranian" missile base in Romania.
So, yes, initially it was designed as a deterrent. But it's possible the brass is rethinking the purpose of the Poseidon. Could be a fleet killer now.

To me it seems like a WW III war fighting weapons platform, with the Belgrod itself being that big mainly to host the Poseidon "torpedos" and to carry the "mini" sub. I would expect the Belgrod to position itself to start deploying the mini sub to begin taking out earth based communications lines between NATO and the U.S. (which in a general war would be done in conjunction with attempting to take out our satellites at the same time) and then when the U.S. Carrier Battle groups arrive on scene in the northern Atlantic the Poseidon which I will assume is some sort of housing device (a miniature autonomous sub if you will) for a cluster of small tactical nuke torpedoes would locate said carrier groups and then carry out multiple autonomous torpedo attacks. I don't see a point to having it be some sort of second strike nuke weapon, that makes no sense at all and there is also no need to have it be so big if it is just a lone torpedo meant to sink a carrier, as much smaller nuke torpedoes exist that will do that job just as good and much cheaper (a Ph.D. Aerospace Engineer who works for a large American defense contractor's Missile Systems company.

Carriers are essentially glorified pirate ships. Their job is to threaten trade routes. They are not much of a threat to Eurasia directly. They can potentially cut Africa, the Americas and Australia from Eurasia, so they are not entirely insignificant. The other thing is - nuclear weapons are a silly hoax, so carriers are protected by escorts.
Why would need a large carrier submarine to do that? When you could just seed the surrounding waters with smart mines and leave.

Russia has always been looking for a way to counter the US Carriers. Those are the one thing that gives the US her current Naval Supremacy more than anything else. A long range nuclear torpedo would be the most effective way to take one out, honestly.
The reason why Belgorod's propeller is covered is based on the diameter & number of blades, you can calculate a sonar return. Meaning ur new sub is identified b4 it hits the water.

And without this underwater vehicle, Russia has 80-90% updated nuclear arsenal and delivery vehicles capable of overcoming any missile defense system, even its own. And more than 1000 nuclear charges can many times turn the United States into a radioactive hell from which even cockroaches will escape! In America, the same number of warheads, albeit with obsolete carriers, but some will fly and there will also be hell on earth! You need to be realistic, this is the best guarantee of survival in this world!

On the Poseidon:
I think we'd have to do some calculations, because following it's role as a tactical nuclear weapon, it attacking fleet groups makes sense. The ship that gets hit by it is in my opinion destroyed. And many people say correctly, that a normal fleet group is spread too far apart for it's explosion to be a danger to other ships. However, I imagine that the waves on see, generated by the Poseidon might be enough to capsize most ships in the same fleet group. I mean that's heavily dependent on the force of the explosive as well as on the types of ships.
But I also imagine that this might be for targeting ports. The submarine could be at a safe distance and fire it and basically render an entire military port useless.
Actually you have to be in shallow waters to generate a wave crest like at a beach.
You can’t create waves the magnitude needed to capsize in the middle of sea, you guys read some like insane propaganda to think nukes can create practically tsunamis
I would refer to the tests at bikini atoll, specifically the baker test which was an underwater detonation. Even vessels that suffered minimal structural damage were still close enough to the blast to be sprayed with water from the detonation and the US found those ships to be so radioactive that all the crew within would have died of radiation poisoning even if the vessel itself was still functional.

I think the whole point of Poseidon is that it can be fired from faaaaar far away and just autonomously roam around and go towards it's target.
The thing itself is supposed to have mini nuclear reactor inside which pretty much means it has infinite power supply and can roam infinitely. When this is taken into account it's ok to assume that submarines wouldn't be approaching too much and just fire these things from far away which indicates very possible use of targeting ports without even getting the submarine close to the enemy shore.
As for Yield ...well the info out there goes anywhere from 2 to 100 Mt which is ...big difference but 100 Mt doesn't sound too crazy either since Russia has had thermonukes of 60Mt since 60's.
Next thing is ...even if it doesn't sink the ships (as other comment already mentioned) there's an issue of being irradiated, especially since this thing has its own nuclear reactor which would also explode along with the vehicle and spray radioactive material all over the place.
@@DJ-kr5zx It's interesting you would say this, but I believe it would make perfect sense to not even have a thermonuclear warhead on it. If the goal is to create a "dirty bomb" torpedo, all you would have to do is detonate conventional explosives and the reactor fallout will do the rest. In any case, these things are pretty terrifying since they can basically just loiter at the seabed for as long as required before climbing towards a target. Deep water ports would be particularly vulnerable, whereas shallower ones will have more warning, since the weapon will naturally have to lose depth as it approaches. I think our best defence would have to be sonar helicopters with depth charges, but for the future, organising a sonar buoy warning system around valuable ports would be prudent I think.
That is a beast to launch, the displacement when launched will really shake the boat up with every launch

The "Posiden" weapon has crazy capabilities. When you think about a 25 megaton explosion going off in or near a major port city (NYC, London, LA, etc.). It would be very difficult to identify the source of the disaster (Russia, China, North Korea).
You mention poseidon is a nuclear powered unit and everybody seems to assume that means it has a reactor on board. It's far more likely that it's powered by an RTG than a reactor. That would then beg the question, is it capable of the high speeds sustained, or, does it use the RTG to charge batteries in order to give it ability for bursts of speed, and if so, how long is that burst ? Still capable of operating for decades without refuel of any type, but the RTG is a much smaller power source than a full on reactor running a pressure system. Another benefit of the RTG over a reactor, it's silent, not just quiet, it's silent. It can sit on station for years undetected by acoustics.

Imagine a torpedo with multiple possible modalities; sub to sub, or sub to surface or sub to surface to air to land. Such a weapon would need to be very large to house the required navigation and propulsion capabilities for any possible modality.

Mr. Sutton, please consider my request for a Comparison between MESMA AIP, Fuel Cell AIP, Sterling AIP and Lithium Ion Battery tech, with pros and cons of each. How long do you think the shelf life of each tech would last? Considering from a perspective of an Indian viewer when their rivals Pak has a MESMA AIP, and soon will have Sterling AIP, while India is yet to acquire even one, and P75I has a few variety of AIP options on the table.

This was built as both torpedo and cruse missile. The problem has been contamination and malfunction contamination I mentioned earlier. The test was done 2 years ago and one within a year while engines tested and problems in every even and radiation contamination recorded.
Excellent video as usual, terrifying topic though. What would be a reasonable guesstimate for the maximum yield of the thermonuclear device? It is just as massive for a (contemporary) nuke as Poseidon is for a torpedo...

@@HISuttonCovertShores I've got to agree with Karl Dönitz (never thought I'd be saying that) that 2 Mt sounds strangely low for what looks to be such a massive bomb on the "leaked" papers.
For comparison, the Castle Bravo device (manufactured nearly 70 years ago) had a ~15 Mt yield, and measured 1.37m wide by 4.56m long for a weight of 10.6 tons ; the famous 60 years old Tsar Bomba of ~55 Mt yield was (including casing and fins) 8m by 2.1m for a weight of 27 tons.
Could it be that 2 Mt is merely the lowest yield setting (likely dialed for enhanced radiation), and thus maximum yield would be higher?
1.two-stage - 20 megatons. This is the standard 8K67 warhead.
2. three-stage - this is the AN602 device. Nobody knows how much is real. But over 50 megatons. Maybe a hundred.
3.20 megatons but with cobalt inserts in the shell.

Edit: I'm not dissing them btw, their submarines are among the best in the world though they tend to go overboard with designs, Alpha class for example didn't care about their noise level but it was extremely fast and was even automated with a crew of 16 in the 1970s, armed with a Supercavitating torpedo...it's so interesting to see how naval philosophies differ.

Yeah, it was a cool movie plot but I don't see MHD happening on practical submarines. Just because you're not using propellers doesn't mean moving a lot of water is silent, especially when you need to run an absurdly powerful reactor to compensate for MHD's rock bottom efficiency. Perhaps covert development will prove me wrong in the future but I wouldn't bet on it.

Nothing at that level is ever leaked by mistake. Belgorod will be to large for a deep dive too much straight area. Absolutely crap for spying but it could be a forward communication rig for hypersonic weapons or other late directional weapons hence the thrusters to maintain position and launch stability.

So great stuff as always, but curious question….russia definitely tends to build more extreme weapon types (not just subs), but does that make them actually better? History tells us for the most part, they aren’t better but is the new modern Russian stuff now different?
I think it is. I don't remember that Russia already built a Shkval-II yet. The modern ones are probably the UGST, Fizik and Futlyar. All are multi-purpose. For the better part, it depends on the weapon and what are you trying to compare it to.
This isn't the typical warfare that we hear or see on television,It's cold war tactics. You have to out research and out spend your opponent without firing a single shot. So a weapon doesn't really have to work, just the possibility of it working is enough. it forces the opponent to take counter measures and spend resources and time.
Russia (formerly the USSR) is not so great at downsizing their weapons like NATO does, so they instead rely on outsizing to pack the required capability into their assets. This is especially true for missiles (surface to air, ballistic, cruise), torpedoes, and to some extent submarines.
Belgorod, with Poseidon torpedoes, is an awesome first strike weapon. Did you consider this idea?
Absolutely. As long as you find somebody dumb enough to believe that you might be able to survive the retaliation after you strike with ONE fucking submarine.

All this talk about a tsunami or gigantic wave created by this poseidon thing are just hilarious...underwater tests have been carried out for many years in the Pacific and none have generated anything aside from the initial explosion water surge that very quickly subsides...and 10 months later than this video, the belgorod is still under construction, far away from sea trials....
Here is the to me scariest theory about what Poseidon could be. Poseidon is part of the Perimeter Sytem (the Dead Hand) and is the final stage of the doomsday sequence of Perimeter. This could be the origin of "Status 6". It seems certain at this point that Poseidon can remain at sea autonomously for a very long time. IT can carry any payload imaginable. For use within Perimeter a cobalt salted nuclear device would be the most devastating. Depending on how well Poseidons brain is, it could receive weather data from remaining russian satellites and detonate at a position under air currents to maximize distribution of the cobalt across the to-be-devastated landmass. This could for example depopulate most of north america and make it totally inhabitable for more than 150 years. It's extremely plausible use case, taking into account that russia is extremely concerned to lose first strike capability due to the NATO missile defense, invalidating any deterrent potential of the russian arsenal (this is the main motiviation behind Satan II as well).
Issues with this theory are, that first and foremost someone has to be mad and an absolute monster to consider building a cobalt salted weapon. And its is questionable if Perimeter would be able to communicate to an underwater recipient with its functionalities (the command missile etc). So while a very plausible scenario and one that is fit to give you sleepless nights, knowing that it is mostly switched off because even the russians are afraid of its reliability.
And if Belgorod carries 4 or 6 of thses weapons, nothing stops the russians to have 5 fleet killer poseidons and 1 dooms day device. Or any combination that keeps you awake at night.
This is what happens when you slowly and underhandedly surround a nation, they are forced to build unthinkable weapons as a deterent.

There are two types of Poseidon torpedoes. Type 6 is the WMD, the smaller one is the tactical one. Present data showcases test systems, and not the final product. The tactical one is capable of annihilating carrier groups and in pack formation, is capable of crippling fleet yards and with some modification, taking beach heads for invasions. The main type is capable of carrying upto 150MT and thus can execute last resort missions including but not limited to destabilizing continental shelves and turning target nations waters into nuclear wastelands. The DSMs are meant to keep track of precise ocean currents and predict where to strike and when to strike.
As for Belgorods, well, they're just motherships for these missions. I think there's a few submarines currently well masked within the projects that would enhance prowling and stalking capabilities, thus ensuring that opposing fleets and ships cannot track them. Likely built to resemble the target's friendlies.
That's the creepiest idea I've heard so far and the worst case scenario I can imagine... these torpedoes can dive to extreme depths, they could be used to cause earthquakes by destabilizing continental shelves like you say.

Poseidon would make for a more effective fleet killer than a second strike anti-port facilities weapon IMO. The launching sub wouldn't even need to get close and multiple weapons could be coordinated to attack multiple different fleets at once, loitering across projected paths. Do that and you basically reduce America's/NATO's power projection considerably. If you include attack subs tracking/targeting SSBNs with their SSGNs poised to hit various shore based targets, this could be a devastating first strike. Overwhelming your opponent on multiple fronts with shear force of numbers, piece of cake for Russia. Not to mention what the Army and Air Force could also do.
Also the seabed warfare beds into this nicely: essentially with the nuclear reactors and losharik they can build a targeting/surveillance system into the seabed, that provides targeting data to the Status-6 (and the new hypersonic weapons) of course oceans are massive so they can not do cover it all, but covering key locations might just do it when supplemented by satellites etc. targeting/location assets.
It is entirely possible and feasible to build a roving torpedo equipped with advanced gyros that function like a sort of GPS guiding. The torpedo drone would know at all times where it is, which means it can navigate on its own to a previously set location where it lies and waits for a carrier group. Then it quickly emerges and detonates a massive conventional warhead. This ensures no nuclear retaliation. With an estimated displacement of 100 tons, you can pack 20 tons of high explosive on it. That much explosive detonated under the keel of a carrier will surely break its back and split it in two.
Carrier group´s location is known 24/7. Satellites make sure of that, we all know this. So the problem is relaying that data to a deep diving sub. If the mothership sub deploys the torpedo from 100 miles away, the gyro will make sure the drone gets there, including any sea floor maneuvering, without any further communication with it. Once it is in the immediate area, it uses its own sonar to pinpoint the carrier, and BOOOMMMM! Any enemy screening submarine will have just seconds to react.
This seems like a much more likely scenario than using it to nuke cities on the shore, and naval bases. An ICBM can accomplish that task just fine. This torpedo sounds more like a carrier killer.
@@Biden_is_demented communicating with deep diving subs easier than people think, as they can just put the antenna on cable and float it closer to surface. This is done on pretty regular basis even. Russia also has ELF transmitter that can be used to give submarines a call to rise into communication depth.
the torpedo lying in wait is rather old concept, there are anti-shipping mines that work just like that. Problem with this approach will always be vastness of the ocean and targeting problems that come with that (more on those later). Also the actual sound level of Status-6 will be important, it might be quite noisy given the speed, so the transit to standby area (or to tactical target) might give it's position away and time to deploy the (not yet realized) countermeasures. Also I don't think there is room for actual submarine steath techologies like raft mounting the machinery/reactor. Moreover Russia has repeatedly trained to use tactical nuclear weapons to gain upper hand on conflict with NATO so it makes sense Status-6 would be nuclear armed even in tactical solutions.
I personally don't believe that specially in war time carrier groups can be tracked 24/7 as satellites can be shot down, they can be blinded with ECM and suchs. At least no one can really trustthese days, that satellite coverage is going to be 24/7. Hence building a vast hydrophone network makes sense as one is none and two is one.
In short, no. Russians do not have first strike doctrine. Russians could not care less about US/NATO fleet if we are talking about nuclear war. Russians always assume that US will strike them with multitude if weapons in order to destroy Russian ability to respond with nuclear weapons. This new torpedo is one of the ways to assure US, that even tho US has surrounded Russia from almost all possible directions with all sorts of offensive systems, still Russian ability to strike back is guaranteed.
This torpedo can obliterate not only whole cities like NY and LA, it is possible that they are strong enough to create tsunami that can wipe out whole states, it is very possible that these torpedoes carry at least 50 megaton warheads, possibly even more.

But USSR used to build many things, even very good things that in reality was just a waist of resources even by their own military doctrine. No Soviet admiral or ruler ever believed that there would ever be a situation where USSR fleet fights with massive US/NATO carrier group and then thats that, everyone goes back home. It would be just absurd. ONLY reason why USSR and NATO fleets would fight each other would be total war and then it would be completely nonsensical sideshow while nuclear weapons would rain down on every big city in NATO/USSR lands.

Just knowing that a fleet killer is in the area means the carrier needs additional escorts and aircrafts searching for it... not just the russians any country that has bad relations with the US would love to have a few fleet hunters just to stop being harassed and intimidated by the US.They are one of the most important assets of the Russian federation.
