New To Me, 1912 Wood Lathe Back To Use!

- Cleaning and setting up a beautiful early 20th century wood lathe made by "Officine Manfredi Bongioanni" In Fossano, Italy.
I love this kind of old and super heavy cast iron tools. So glad I have been able to pick this one up to use it for my projects and to have fun! Also very cool to see how a solid, and well mantained tool can hold up to time this well!
I was not able to find much information about this tool, here in Europe is rare to find precise information or old catalogue for tools, if you know anything be sure to let me know and I'll add it to the description. Thank you!

Index of operation and materials:
To clean the lathe from old wood dust and oil mixture I followed this procedure:
1:22 Remove most of the dust with card scraper or spatula
1:27 Apply de-greaser
1:29 Bush off as best and hard as possible what comes off
1:35 Clean residue with rag
2:10 Oxide film on the ways have been removed with a super fine abrasive pad on the angle grinder
2:30 I tired for the first time a PTFE dry lubrificant, it dries quick and seems to cover well. Not sure how durable it is yet. I'll test this more!
3:06 Small parts are cleaned on my freshly restored bench grinder with a steel wire wheel
7:28 I cleaned the bushings oiler port as best as I could without letting anything get into the oil. Off camera I also flattened the covers so they now sit flush and really block the oil ports
8:30 All bearing on this machine were in great shape.
10:15 Grease for the open bearings
11:12 White and thick solvent based paint for steel
11:35 Re purposing an old 380V switch, mounted in a convinient position
11:55 I know... I need to make a key for that!

this is in a VERY good condition for a tool this old, I am impressed. I really like watching old tools get restored to a new life of use, the folks that made these old tools probably never thought about their creation being restored and used again 100 years later...

Old tools usually have a very charm full patina, sometimes, small cleaning and oiling are all they need IMHO. The lathe looks great! And, Please, take care of fingers... 12:25

Who ever had the lathe before you took excellent care of it, as you pointed out, it was damn near perfect. Makes me happy to know there are people who keep there tools as well maintained as i do. good job boss.

That's the level of restoration I like. Complete cleaning and rust removal, thorough lubrication and bearing inspection. Keep the patina. Put it back into service.

Beautiful,simple but efficient old lathe. Great job of restoration, l would add more grease on those bearings as l think the amount may be inadequate for good lifetime operation.
Great job. Adding a coat of paste wax to the rails and mating surfaces will make the tailstock and tool rest much easier to reposition.

I stole my wife’s hard beeswax for stiffening thread and used that. Works for bowstrings and servings too.

I didn't read the description ahead of time I just clicked on the video like I always do and I guess I fully expected you to tear it apart grind it do an in-depth tear down and repaint it. I was actually shocked when I realized you were going to clean it up and get it running again. Some things are better left alone and this was one of them. What a beautiful lathe you have there!

Hi Best check the suitability of that red grease for bearings, Red Rubber Grease is used in the automotive industry in hydraulic and braking systems to protect & lubricate rubber bushes, seals and o-rings. Another good video keep them coming.

Great video as always, big fan of your work.
Nice old lathe. But you didnt true up the the head stock with the tail stock to make sure they are running true. When you placed the wood in, you had to pull it towards the tail stock for it to clamp in the centre of the wood. This shows the head stock is out of alignment. Place the tail and head stock to one edge of the bed ( losen them and pull them both towards you so they are at the one bed ledges) and then push the tail stock over to the head stock so the centres are together so the tail stock point is at the head stock centre point without the 3 way jaw chuck on. When these are lined up, tighten the headstock .The tailstock should then be used anywhrer on the bed and be in line. :). Hope this helps. Have fun. I did with my wood turning lathe. :).

A lot of the really old tools did run on overhead belts. The shops could get one motor to run a series of drive wheels on a shaft near the ceiling to drive all the tools in the shop.
Not far from where I sit in Troy, NY there is a 150 year old company that started out making drive belts. Their flat belts were made of Bison hide and were available in 36 and possibly more wide, at least as of my visit to them in the mid to late 1970s
