As a turner I can't tell you how much I appreciate you keeping all the pitfalls and fixes in your videos. Your experience is priceless. Thanks again Jim.
The integrity that you demonstrate in the process of making these videos is amazing. So many people have lost sight of the importance of living with integrity.
You never disappoint. You take a split chunk of log that most people would look at and call firewood and turn it into a stunning masterpiece. Well done.
One of the things I appreciate most about your videos is that you recognize that learning what NOT to do is just as important as learning what to do in the first place. Please, keep helping us learn by teaching us where you fail. This is a spectacular piece!
I so appreciate your taking time to talk and show us through all the processes, mistakes and all. And what a stunning piece. I don't turn, or make anything, but I do enjoy watching your videos, your humour and the journey you take to make the beautiful turnings you create.
I'd love to see the "dog" or "bear" smoothed, polished and shined. I know you can't really turn it. But, it looks like it's almost already shaped. I see the eye and everything. Of course, I'd love to see some of those really gnarly pieces turned into vases, or bowls, or urns. You do those things, really beautifully.
Yes I've experienced some pitfalls with epoxy too. Nothings ever easy or goes to plan liked we hoped, but we improvise through it just like you did. Came out great! Love your old school lathe.
"I'll just watch the first few minutes, I gotta sleep".. Aaaaaaaaaand I watched the whole thing. Damn that's a pretty sick vase. Thank you for introducing me to woodturning, now that's something I definitely wanna learn and do. Thanks Jim for sharing all your experience and knowledge! It's priceless
I love how dark this wood is! It looks absolutely stunning with the dancing blue and purple. The cheeky sense of humor was awesome, it was entertaining to hear you contain yourself!
I named my cat 'Lightning', as it is my favorite part of a Thunderstorm. the power of lightning and the beauty of it have kept me in awe since childhood.
Well done Jim, great job. I called my partner in to look at your video and made much of the fact that even the experts get leaks. Couple of things that I do to prevent resin leaks. I sit the job in a kitty litter tray ($3) to catch the escaping resin - prevents mess - I hot glue a 3mm disc of MDF just a bit larger in diameter than the log to the base of the log and tape the edges where the MDF meets the log. The tape wont stop leaks on its own but provides something soft and gasket like for my large size hose clamp to bite into. The clamps go over the plastic sheet shroud that goes around the whole log. I use the Stainless steel hose clamps. They cost more but take more tightening and you only need a couple. Hose clamps are the answer
Your videos are really interesting and informative. Love the explanation of every step involved in the process. That’s an absolutely beautiful vase. These techniques should be classified as a fine art medium.
Love thes videos. Just to see the skills used to create the transaction from one beautiful object to another in the creator's hand. Awesome. Love the object lessons.
I am crazy IN LOVE with this vase!!!! I especially love the round form and flared lip. I also want to thank you for leaving "mistakes" in your videos -- it adds so much more to the entire presentation, and I know it's helpful to other makers who are fans of your channel.
Wow, I just have to agree with you on using the gold in the smaller veins!! Fantastic, happy ending experiment there. I think it touches off on that most beautiful blue you've used here, and as blues go with yellows so well in the first place.... well you certainly have put the explanation point on this note!!! Perfectly executed journey from start to finish! Thank you kindly 😁👍.
The translucence of the resin when looking from the inside of the vase out is really nice. Also, I think the spruce burl has the makings of a very fine cauldron.
Jim, this is beautiful! Love the Japanese gold technique!! Great explanation / tutorial on your methodology. Always great to see the challenges, it allows me to relate :)
Hi Jim you have impressed me yet again with turning this beautiful vase. I liked the journey around your workshop looking at your different bits of wood you have some fabulous pieces of wood. The way you advice us and show us what is good for you and might be helpful to us when we do our turning thank you Jim. This piece of wood and the resin are cool the wood has fantastic grain, marking and cracking we're the resin goes into and colouring, I love the piece of walnut wood. Take care Amanda xxxx
I know I'm late to the party on this one, but I had to comment while catching up on all your amazing content/creations. I am SO happy to see you tried the faux-kintsugi technique. I absolutely love it as a style and was one of the (many) folk who suggested it a while back, so it really made my day to see that you'd tried it here. It looks STUNNING! You really nailed it. I think it was kinda poetic that the project fought you so hard and you used the kintsugi technique on it, along that whole making something beautiful out of a broken thing philosophy. I've also got to say; the fact you stayed so calm and chill when the resin kept leaking, and to come into your workshop and see that river of purple... I might have lost my mind, but you calmly sorted it and in the end have created something truly beautiful and yeah, you're an inspiration Jim, really glad to have found your channel :) I also really loved the trailer section where you talk about your new pieces from Troy, your cheeky giggles at /that one piece/ made me laugh alongside you! :D Between the difficult project and seeing you overcome the challenges, to the playful levity with the wood from Troy, yeah, this is one of my favourite videos from you. Really great stuff :D
Wow super beautiful piece. Feeling sorry for the mishaps with the leaks but at the same time also very muhc approving of you levaing those in. That's the things that really make you legit and authentic in showing your actual process and giving people a real chance to understand how things are going (or not going). great choice going with the gloss this time too. Love how shiny it is
Very Beautiful. Boy this piece fought you from the beginning, but you conquered the pitfalls through out the journey. It shows there is a way to get passed problems, that may occur with wood that is sketchy. I love the end piece. Thank you for showing all the steps and patience. Great Video as always.
I think the only thing you can do with the one piece is to make what it wants to be you wouldn’t have to show what you make of it kind of a private piece no pun intended 😂
It's really good to see just how much the colour and chatoyance are brought out in the wood, the resin looked really good and it was hard to see where the blue stopped and the purple started. The gold crack resin looked really good, might of needed a small pich or extremely small cutter or carbide burr in the engraver to give the crack a bit more depth in the centre. I think outlining the resin would look good too, sometimes it's hard to improve on nature though lol. Really good finish, think you should get powdered metal i.e. aluminium, bronze, copper etc to get a nice metal inlay look about it?
1st time seeing your work and I must say that it is beautiful! I subscribed and am looking forward to many more of your creations! Ps: the one piece that you found and made you giggle made me bust out laughing 🤣 can't wait to see what comes of it!
I have just recently subscribed to your channel and have watched a lot of your videos and this one right here is my favorite so far with all the curve balls it threw at you and not just at the start all the way till the end and your never give up attitude turned out a very very interesting and incredibly beautiful piece of artwork!! I have never came close to turning anything but I stumbled across your channel and I am very glad that I decided to watch that first one!! Thank you so much for making us a part of your world!! Your an amazing wood turner!! Again thank you keep the amazing videos coming!!
Hi Jim. You have every right to be proud of your work. That vase is absolutely beautiful. One of the joys of this community is the willingness of everyone to share their ‘happy little accidents’ as they could easily be edited out. Keep safe yourself and all the best to you and your family from the UK 🌞
Designer epoxy The vase is beautiful! I appreciate watching you make mistakes and fixing them. It saves me the frustration from doing it myself. I have made a few vases for myself and I do like to use them. So I got a cylinder of acrylic, cut to the proper height and glue a flat piece of acrylic on the bottom. Made sure it was water tight and lowered it into the vase. You can't see it but allowed you to put flowers in the vase. The cylinder comes out easily to clean or add water. Another great project. If will be interesting to see what you plan for the trailer of wood.
Of all the UA-cam videos on Woodturning yours is the best! That was a gorgeous vase you sure can take a piece of gnarly old wood and make it into a piece of art!
What imagination & talent you have to just be able to look at a plain old log & quickly say this will be a vase or that will be a bowl. Totally amazing! Watching & listening to your videos from beginning to end & seeing what awesome pieces you've created is mindblowing.
Thanks for the honest content. It's reassuring to see such competent people be honest about their mistakes and show how their experience helps them recover the situation.
Is it bad that I find myself being so entertained by your woes? Don't know how to describe how I enjoy the way you produce your shows and your products. Entertaining and educational, which is a hard thing to do. Thanks as always.
Now thats (Class!!) Thank you for leaving that teaching moment in the video and not hiding it from us. Not one of us are perfect and even after years of wood working I still make the simplest of mistakes. 😊
The mistakes are invaluable experience. I personally love that you and Nick Zammeti leave them in, because when I start I'll have that base knowledge. Like you said, if you leave them out, we don't learn!
I'm impressed with how you work through the problem and are honest on how to fix the problem/mistake. My wife loves your work. She is addicted to your talent! Do I need to worry? 😂
Gosh. Really AWSOME how you salvaged a bad piece of walnut. The final product sure proves your the real winner. Really enjoyed watching video I'm ready for more. The lighting Vase is wow it looks as though the fillers were natural minerals deposited during the tree's life of which has been displayed by your artistry. The most AWSOME wood turning project I've ever seen. Thank You.
Wow, I didn’t think it was going to look that great with one long crack, but man did it come out beautiful. The purple and blue are perfect with the walnut. Thanks for all your commentary. I very much look forward to watching your videos.
Lovely bowl. Love the shape. The blue down the side looks like water spilling over the form. I love Walnut and that blue complements it truly beautifully.
I got the flu yesterday, and was looking for something relaxing while I fight off this fever. I know nothing about wood turning but found this both interesting and calming.
I have watched other people's videos and I don't think they would have went to as much trouble making this work the way you did. That is what makes you special! ❤❤
Like other commenters, I don't actually turn, but enjoy your commentary as you go. I don't know how you stayed so patient with the leaks - I would have given up. Another gorgeous piece, belongs in a palace.
Hello from Virginia, USA. This walnut resin art vase is stunning!! I’m no craftsperson, but I really enjoy watching raw materials turn into awe-inspiring art pieces in the hands of master craftsmen/women. I find your videos to be informative, interesting and entertaining, and your finished products are fantastic.
Absolutely beautiful ❤ being a retired 66 year old from Steinbach, Manitoba, I really enjoy how you put your forms together. I love guessing what they will end up like
Designer Epoxy and your ability to use the right colours is amazing. As a hobby woodturner just getting into epoxy resin I sure do appreciate your videos showing the ups as well as the downs. Thanks for sharing, your are a fabulous turner and teacher.
Hi Jim, I turned my one and only bowl in shop class in high school some 50 years ago. Recently bought a lathe and ready to start turning again! Just stumbled upon this video today and was really impressed with your quality of teaching, including learning by errors along the way! Just subscribed and will review your library to gain more insight. The vase is gorgeous! Designer epoxy
All week long I look forward to seeing your beautiful work. I can't tell you what an inspiration you are. You make it look effortless, though we all know it's really not. Thank you Jim for introducing me to a hobby I love.
It was a tough go, but you ended up with a really nice piece. I also appreciate you leaving in the lessons learned, I enjoy the journey and the lack of pretense.
It’s the best watching experienced tradesmen running into problems and sharing the entire process with us in their videos!! Bravo 👏🏼 it shows that even the best have to troubleshoot as they go!! Great work mate 👍🏼👍🏼 from Australia 🇦🇺 🦘
@@SpragueWoodturning Ps - have you ever thought of running an LED Strip through the epoxy (actually embedded) during the pour? Have the connection/power plug out the base to plug in? I think it would look amazing!! (I’d try it but I don’t have the tools and skills to try just yet 🤣🤣 Definitely looks like a polar bear 🐻❄️ and a …… 😉😂 🤣🤣🤣 First video of yours that I’ve watched and I’ve immediately hit the Like and Subscribe buttons!!! 👌🏼👌🏼
I call it turning on the fly, Jim always trust your gut when turning. I have done something to save of my pottery I have dropped before with that gold. great work Jim
Hi, I have just watched you make the solar system goblet and I wish I could own one. My dad like myself were big trekki fans and this would be a really fitting tribute to his memory. I love watching you at 👷 Nicky from the UK
I'm a little late to the party, but I want to add another voice to those who appreciate you including the problems you encounter and how to remedy them. One of the most, if not the absolute most, important class I took as a neophyte woodworker was on how to fix your mistakes. We all make them and knowing how to fix them without starting all over again is crucial.
As usual another beautiful job. And thanks for sharing your finish application. I certainly like you leaving all the problems in so we can learn at your expense. Designer Epoxy
As a turner I can't tell you how much I appreciate you keeping all the pitfalls and fixes in your videos. Your experience is priceless. Thanks again Jim.
Thanks for watching
I like whacking your video thank you very much.

Yay, got to watch a new video from Jim on my birthday! Looks great!

Thank you very much
Hi Jim, I turned my one and only bowl in shop class in high school some 50 years ago. Recently bought a lathe and ready to start turning again! Just stumbled upon this video today and was really impressed with your quality of teaching, including learning by errors along the way! Just subscribed and will review your library to gain more insight. The vase is gorgeous!

Great! Welcome aboard! Thanks for watching!
All week long I look forward to seeing your beautiful work. I can't tell you what an inspiration you are. You make it look effortless, though we all know it's really not. Thank you Jim for introducing me to a hobby I love.
Wow, thank you very much!
And also, I've been watching your channel all day. Thanks for teaching me so much !!!
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it!
Superior patience and workmanship! Hava Goodun Jim
Thank you very much
It was a tough go, but you ended up with a really nice piece. I also appreciate you leaving in the lessons learned, I enjoy the journey and the lack of pretense.
Thank you very much
Your talent and imagination are astounding, they seem to know no bounds
Thank you very much!
Thanks for sharing the good and bad with this project. Vase turned out fantastic! Resin colours are great. Cheers

It’s the best watching experienced tradesmen running into problems and sharing the entire process with us in their videos!! Bravo 👏🏼 it shows that even the best have to troubleshoot as they go!! Great work mate 👍🏼👍🏼 from Australia 🇦🇺 🦘
Couldn't agree more! Thanks
@@SpragueWoodturning Ps - have you ever thought of running an LED Strip through the epoxy (actually embedded) during the pour?
Have the connection/power plug out the base to plug in?
I think it would look amazing!! (I’d try it but I don’t have the tools and skills to try just yet 🤣🤣
Definitely looks like a polar bear 🐻❄️ and a …… 😉😂 🤣🤣🤣
First video of yours that I’ve watched and I’ve immediately hit the Like and Subscribe buttons!!! 👌🏼👌🏼

Love this vase. I must admit your "challenging" projects are usually some of your best pieces.
Can’t argue that, thanks!
Man you are great at what you do don't ever quit because that vase was amazing
Too much time and money in it to quite, lol. Thank you very much!
I call it turning on the fly, Jim always trust your gut when turning. I have done something to save of my pottery I have dropped before with that gold. great work Jim
Max flex is the key, lol. Thanks for watching!
Hi,
I have just watched you make the solar system goblet and I wish I could own one.
My dad like myself were big trekki fans and this would be a really fitting tribute to his memory.
I love watching you at 👷
Nicky from the UK
You have me confused with someone else. Never made a solar system goblet before? Thanks
Thats gorgeous!!!!!!! . Thanks for sharing! And teaching, even about the mistakes we can make, thanks for keeping it real.!
You are so welcome!
Totally! Thanks!
As usual another beautiful job. And thanks for sharing your finish application. I certainly like you leaving all the problems in so we can learn at your expense.
