Great story! I’ve been to Omaha Beach three times. I’m not sure if the learning value ever ends!

There is so much to see. You could go 10 times and still new things.

The Rangers did not go up that path that leads to that bunker. That path was created decades later, it did not exist in 1944. The Rangers scaled the cliff much more to the west of that bunker, to the rear of the nest WN73. That bunker is also not a "machine gun nest" it was a casemate for a 75mm PAK 97/38 anti-tank gun.

Enjoyed this greatly and certainly appreciate all the study it took piecing together so many details. I was an Original in the 1st Ranger Bn at Forts Benning then Stewart when we started up the Bn in 1974; was later in the 2nd Bn as well as a Ranger Instructor at Camp James E. Rudder in Florida. The Camp is named, of course, for the Commander of the 2nd Ranger Bn who was with the battalion slice that was at Pointe du Hoc. We studied our lineage and heritage a lot in those units but now have added some great details so thanks very much from this old (new) Ranger!

Second thing. Host says “as a commando” reference when do they decide to pull back or regroup. From what I have seen or experienced, they didn’t see that as an option whereas we do. It’s nothing against our generation per se, it’s just different. I know we still use the whole “close with and destroy” motto but they actually did it, regardless of loss. In our wars, we have so much direct support from AWT and CAS that we didn’t have to think in the terms of absolutes like they did. It’s just… different. That’s why I respect that generation so much. There was no alternative. They are the reason I joined and I never did and I never will even stand in the shadow they cast. ❤

100% - there was no other option. And even if there was, their comms were so poor that information was barely getting back to decision makers. But to your point, once the decision was made to go, it was truly at all costs. There was no other option. Thanks for watching.

I thought he said “as a Commander” indicating in charge of troops, and not a Commando. Any clarification available?

    • @stephenwilson9883
      @stephenwilson9883 Місяць тому

@@ranger-1214he seems responsive so I’ll let him give final clarification. That said, he has a Special Forces sweater on so commando is accurate. The liklihood of commander is possible as well. Either way, my comment reference the mindset and “final, only option or absolute” nature of this generations fight remains the same.

@@ranger-1214 I said "as a commander'" as in I am asking the question from the position of a commander who is watching his units gets slaughtered and must continue to send more troops into the fire. I wanted to know what information they were receiving from the front lines and what their decision making process was.

@jedburghpodcast That takes an iron will and faith in your men or an indifference for life with soo little comms. I don't envy those commanders .

I loved thus story. I'm fascinated with WWII history, especially after D-Day and the push through Europe. I would love to take that history tour along the route of the 506th PIR.

This is the best in depth breakdown I’ve seen and heard of some of what happened on those beaches. It’s not long ago, no matter how far it seems, that people tried enforcing their will on the world and a bunch of brave young men showed up there and other places and said “yeah okay,,,, we’ll see about that. Here we come you are going to have to kill us first” I sit here in the America that I have known my whole life because these men did. And yet many people today haven’t heard of who some of these brave men are, but they do revere some online personality who wouldn’t piss on you if you were smoldering in a dumpster. A million people show up to a Stanley Cup parade but could we get a million to show up for some Marines or Soldiers, Sailors or Air Force returning from a combat deployment? Probably not. And these athletes while setting a great example of good competition in life and team goal setting, talking about themselves being warriors. Sorry but the men who stormed this beach are warriors. Athletes are competitors. They compete cause of these men who died here.

I wonder how many lives Col. Snider saved by ordering them to veer off to Dog White instead of Green. And if they *had* landed at Green and been wiped out, how much more difficult would it have been to take the German positions?

    New subscriber.
    Love the episode!!
I’m not complaining…I know that you had no control over the tide…but this would be that much better at low tide.
I do wish France, or at least the Norman coast, would have had the foresight to preserve that area as it was in June 1944.
Perhaps someday, a generation will come along that will attempt to restore it.
Really enjoyed this. Sharing to my wall and looking forward to other episodes.

Thanks for watching and the thoughtful comments. As soon as Troy started talking I was like “damn! I wish it was low tide!”
I was also a bit surprised by the build up but I guess in many ways they have had to move forward. There is still a lot of tribute throughout and they have certainly not forgotten. Much more to come!

Damn. It’s insane how important angles are. That one nest with the machine gun teams and artillery that was turned to be hidden from the sea, but covered an entire sector of fire 😓

Can’t believe the Germans actually stopped when the commander yelled… stop let me get my wounded man…. I don’t think I would have stopped if I was in a war like that …. Kinda admirable but kinda stupid… At that point you might as well surrendered if you are German if you are going to stop fighting to let them get a wounded soldier…. Sounds like they knew war was over … it was just a matter of time

Gahhhh the Germans field of fire 🤯 If they had placed an opposing bunker, hidden from the shore, yet dominating an entire shore line, the same as what they did at the 10:19 mark, man…. This is why history is so important.
