  • A rather unlikely review of a Mazda Bongo, more unlikely is how much I enjoyed it.

They lasted so well, if you spot 90s cars you will see Bongo Campers still today.

The flappy footrest things at the back of the front seats are actually to make rear-facing seats in the back, using the front seats as the backrest - move the front seats forward, and the flappy things will fold into the space to make the seat.

Probably be still running when all these electric cars today are dead and gone, if you can still by fuel.

My mate tours all over Europe in his. Never been sure why he went for a Bongo though. Seems you have discovered why!

Chrysler reportedly put the first cupholders in mass-market vehicles in their popular 1984 Plymouth Voyager minivan. They were small depressions in the center consoles of the vans, intended to support a 12-ounce cup of coffee.
Not sure how true this is but you had me intrigued on the cup holder. I had to google it haha.

There is something about the colour on this video which seems different to the norm. It looks really really good!

They stopped making them as factory burnt down. Footrest are Dicky seats. Mine 23years old. 4 berth. Electric blinds, pop top electric etc etc. George

The 'footrests' are in fact, a seat base cleverly designed so you can have rear facing seats, created by sliding the front seats as far forward as they will go then also tipping the seat backs forward. Finally flipping those footrests backwards et voila! I've owned a 2.5 V6 mk2 version of yours for a few years now and they are simply brilliant! Goes like a rocket ship!

I had the Nissan version of this back in the 90s that was a van derived people carrier. The engine sat between the two front seats and as a result got quite warm. The fitment was identical to the bongo but the heat from the engine was the reason I parted with it.

I'm on my second of these - sold the first one and regretted it so replaced it recently. Have been all over Europe in them with a family of 4, they're absolutely rock solid vans which can also be used every day. They're big enough to get you where you want to go, but small enough to be parked up in any street without looking offensive.
It will happily pootle along at 70mph all day, too - a great distance cruiser.

Great review Mustard. The Bongo is a very good value day van / camper, fresh Japanese imports that are / were professionally rust proofed, before been used on our roads are the one’s to buy

A nice vehicle. But they rusted badly ,especially the rear arches.

The part that you refer to as car phone holder is actually the driver ashtray.....remember 90's all cars had ashtrays bk them
