  • For those of you that tow or plan to tow with your 1998 to 2007 100 series Toyota Land Cruiser or your Lexus LX470, I have an easy way to install a brake controller and 7 pin connector. Not only can you safely tow a trailer, you can add an additional line for a charge back system. Helpful video! I have a similar setup with the Tekonsha 90195, P3 and Curt 57672 connector on 2002 Tundra. Though on the Tundra, the brake wire is harder to find. One thing I did different is on the 7-pin, positive power (+) black wire, I used a smaller circuit breaker, a 30 amp breaker since a 10 gage wire is only rated for up to 30 amps. Also, want to mention, on the circuit breakers, there is a copper and zinc bolts. The copper bolt get connected to the battery.

    This video is what I needed! Thanks for sharing! Also could you explain a little bit more about the circuit breakers (what are they for, are they necessary?) and the back charger(what’s the purpose of it and is it indispensable? Is it for the trailer or has a function on the truck end? Thanks so much!

    LXPlore, nice instructional. Thank you. How much can your LX haul? Better yet, what (weight) are you comfortable hauling in the 470? Would love to hear your comments on this topic.

    • @LXPlore

      Great… glad I could help. I believe the 2002 LX470 towing capacity is at 6,500 lbs. I’m sure it could tow the weight, however I wouldn’t want to put it to the test. You really need to consider tongue weight, braking and overall condition of your vehicle. I towed a small camp trailer, weighing approximately 2,500 lbs plus another 400 to 500 lbs of gear and people in the LX. It towed like a dream, but fuel economy was horrible. I would probably limit the weight to 4000 lbs to tow comfortably up and over mountain passes. I installed heavy springs and airbags for added weight and the added tongue weight. I elected not to use weight distribution bars because of the trailer size and the fact I have airbags. Hope that helps.

      @@LXPlore Thanks. My experience is limited to the 1-ton U-Haul 6x12 enclosed trailer. For the most part, my '02 470 accelerates about the same with or without the trailer. The 470 is not that fast but the 1-ton trailer doesn't really feel like it is there. I have the class III hitch rated for 6500 lbs and 975 lbs of tongue weight. I just upgraded the front rotors and pads to the Power Stop Z36 (truck and tow performance kit) and had the bearings replaced. I need to add the 7-pin kit and brake controller, which is what brought me here. Eventually I want to get an 8.5 x 16 enclosed trailer, which will weigh around 3000 lbs. I confest that I am curious if the 470 can actually tow 6500 on a flat interstate without scaring the driver. lol. Thanks again for your vid.

    The Curt connector has a yellow wire they say is the reverse light/auxiliary. Does this wire need to be connected to the reverse lights?

    • @LXPlore
      @LXPlore  Рік тому

      I believe it’s for towing a boat to deactivate the hydraulic brake system while in reverse.

    Ok well, I felt like it left out a couple of steps I really needed. I completely did not know what you were talking about with the wires and how you got them to go all the way back to the back of the vehicle. They didn’t look that long. So not really step by step instructions for a novice like myself. I have to do this wiring job in order to pick up my trailer in a few days. Didn’t understand about where the “chargeback” thing went either. I’m pretty screwed at this point.

    • @LXPlore
      @LXPlore  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Michelle… the most important part about the entire process is the ability for the brake controller to function as to press the brake pedal. Running wires for the charge back portion isn’t a necessity but a valued convenience. I’ve seen a couple of blue tooth options for people that don’t want to splice into the harness or that don’t want to fiddle with wiring. Might be an alternative idea. Let me know if you need clarification on something.
