This is badass!!! I was about to do this two months ago but I saw on IH8MUD and some UA-cam comments about over greasing because of the pressure on the drives haft and just dealt with it. I'll just be careful like you and possibly try this out next month. Awesome video dude!
Thank you! Yeah let it move back and forth about 10x and you should be good. Ran over some curbs after greasing to “flex” it a bit lol. Still driving smooth 👍
i think if the jack stands are on the rear axil you can fill it all the way.
Such an important thing that 95% or more of people never do. Even mechanics don't bother with it.
Mechanics don't bother because they'd rather sell customer a new u-joint or driveshaft!
@@CO84trucker very true. For me it’s part of the routine maintenance on all my trucks. Keeps things running smoothly
I told my mechanic to check and lube every oil change. He is a great mechanic and does not overlook stuff like this.
@@hedge313 good idea. It’s the little things like this that keep a vehicle enjoyable for many many years
That Cruiser is a beauty. You and many other’s on UA-cam are hopefully showing more people who are on the fence about doing their own general maintenance can have more confidence in doing such. Good for you in taking the initiative.
Thanks Ryan! It can definitely be difficult at times but very rewarding when completed.
Great video. My LX 470 has a clunk also. Thanks for the info. Beautiful child btw. You can tell she is a happy girl. You are truly blessed.
Thank you!
Bought a 2001 with 110,000 mi from original owner Oct 2021 super clean super sweet. Driven from so cal to Montana to Florida, running perfectly so far, heading back to Montana in a couple of days, love this rig.
110k! That’s amazing! Congratulations on that find. I get so much more joy out of this 04 vehicle than I did out of my brand new Tacoma.
whats the mileage at now? just picked up a 91 FJ80 with 115k, gonna grease the u joints soon It might have a slight clunk 😂
Just bought a 2001 LX470....with the clunk! Thx for the fantastic vid!
You're welcome. Thank you!
@@rywanders I did the lube and pumped 20 times per slip joint and got no clunk relief, and no grease coming out of the slip yoke. Wondering if that thing was dry or if I'missing something. Aost like the slip yoke is frozen.....Planning to add more grease .....thx again for the vid.
@@frederickmatthews4259 Try taking it over some bumpy terrain to get it to extend and compress to see if any grease comes out the seal. When adding watch for it to move back and forth a few times. If it doesn't work you may have to change it out.
awesome video. just finished greasing my Hilux u joins and slide yokes. just use a nlgi 2 high-temperature grease (not molybdenum di sulfide because i don't have an extra grease gun) u joins are easy and just 3 to 4 pumps pushed out the old grease. when start pumping in slide yoke, took me 12 to 15 pumps to see the grease coming out from the slide yoke. clean the excess, drive around town, crawl underneath and checked, saw grease pushed out of slide yoke. cleaned the excess. after 2 days, same happened, cleaned the excess. third day all good, no excess grease coming out. no clanking.
Nice work!
Was your tires off the ground?
This is nice to know, it's just greasing is all. i figured it was just play in the gearsets and drivelines taking up was all. I'll be doing taking care of this saturday along with the oil change it needs!
Just took my 07 4Runner in for an oil change and asked about getting this done since I've been having the clunk. The service tech told me they would have to diagnose the problem for $160/hour first. I told him I knew what the problem is and it just needs grease. He told me he's never heard of this and that the grease is supposed to last the life of the vehicle. I then asked why it has a port for adding grease if that was true. Anyway, guess I'll be doing this myself. I hate dealerships!
That’s why I hate dealerships. Only go for recalls or free oil changes
This appears to be the remedy for my long neglected problem. Thanks
Hope it works for you
@@rywanders I greased my gx470 and still working smooth thanks for the video.
Great video which emphasises the importance of something so simple. Its makes everything sound and feel so better, drivetrain will love you for it
Just ordered the stuff! Been clunking forever now. Hoping this improves it!
Thank you for making this video - I have two 4Runners and need to do the exact same greasing procedure. I choose the same grease gun as you but decided to use Amsoil Synthetic Polymeric Off-Road Grease, NLGI #2 has it has a bit more Moly in it at 5%.
Thanks for posting..
I will grease mine soon.
My 02 LC with 200K still my favorite vehicle for road trips..
Man you saved my day i have same issue thanks buddy
💪
Great video, man!!
Thanks.
Great video! I’ve had Toyota do then when I take it in for an oil change, but this looks too easy that I’ll DIY! Thanks!
🤙
My HDJ81 seems overserviced as it’s been slinging a lot of grease from the slip yoke. No clunking, just slinging grease. I will for sure be careful not to overserviced and create a mess.
Great video, currently looking for one of these in Uk. Really good video and audio 👍🏻
Thank you!
Subscribed! Fellow Cruiser and MTB rider.
Awesome! Thanks for the sub!
I do this on my LC every oil change. I use my wife’s toothbrush to clean the u-joints after.
You give it back to her when you’re done?
Great video. Thank you for taking the time.
Thank you
Thank ur for video I will try on my truck now…!
Just purchased my first 100 series. Just sold my sequoia. All of the 100 series I have ever been in have a clunk to them so I thought it was just a normal thing. Trying this out on mine tonight and hopefully that clunk will go away. #900Subscriber!
Let me know! Thanks for being #900! 🤘
Also, my GX is lifted with no running boards, so I'm thinking I will just slide under there and do this while it is on the ground so I don't have to worry about over filling while it is in the air.
How did it go on the ground? I was thinking the same.
If it was bad to grease the slip yolk, Toyota would not have put a zerk there. I trust the engineers at Toyota.
"Am I done here?" LOL🤣
😅
Cute Junior in training awesome job
Cheers from OZ, -Good vid, and “discussion” as you went..
Will have to check if you done a timing belt..
-Thanks..
Ps. -Ta to your “helpers” too..
:)
Cheers! I didn’t do the timing myself I left that to a shop with the proper tools maybe next cycle I’ll try to take it on myself we will see lol
Thanks so much this video was helpful
80 series with clunks here. Can it be done with wheels on the ground?
You’ll need to lift and put it in neutral to rotate the shaft
Great video!!
Thanks!
Very informative! Im brand new in the j80 game, i do work at truck repair shop, and could have car just drive on four ramps for greasing, that will give enough space, so theoretically i could fully grease the slip joint? And i wonder if semi truck grease is good enough, i mean it should be considering their weight haha
Thanks! Yes a lift would be great! That may be too heavy of a grease but compare it to this and see. Congrats on the j80
Is this possible to do without the jack stands?
Yes but way more difficult as you need to rotate the drive shaft to access the zerk fittings
Fantastic job 😊
It was worth it just for teh 'what does the clunk mean'? haha she should be your mascot
She makes my videos 10x better lol
Hmm, I have a clunk on my 80 series that feels like it's right under my feet. I wonder if this is the same issue. I'll grease it up Monday!
Hope it works. Let us know!
My gx470 had this issue I greased it and reduced the clicking feeling, it comes back from time to time, should I just keep greasing it so it can go away 100% ?
You can or you may need to replace the u-joint
Thank You!!
Np!
Late to the party but i've heard it both ways. Some say you can't over grease u joints and to pump until you see fresh grease coming out of the seals while others say 1-2 pumps until you see just a little bit come out because over greasing can cause pre mature failure.. Any youtube professionals have the correct answer?
I’d say you want just enough till you see it coming out otherwise you’ll just fling excess grease everywhere.
Great video. I do wish you would have included examples of the clunk at the beginning of the video. I'm trying to diagnose a clinic myself, and am not sure if it is the u joint clunk or something else. I'm just going to go ahead and do this and see if the noise goes away.
Hey Christopher, thanks for the feedback! Yeah it doesn’t hurt to do this either way. Hopefully it works for you. I would lift it off the ground if you can; doing it under pressure might not work well and you won’t be able to rotate to access the zerks. Let me know how it goes.
She is Her Daddy's Girl. Great!
I have an 06 Land Cruiser (100 series). I get the "clunk" when I'm driving and let off the accelerator, wait a few seconds then push the accelerator again.
Is that likely the same thing? Some have said a bad bearing in the drive line (that is under load when the motor/trans are engages (not coasting).
It is definitely in the rear of the truck.
Yes, same thing was happening to me. Try this and if it still happens then your u joints may be bad.
The clunk could also be worn lower control arm bushings or worn engine mounts.
@@4runner1grfe I understand.... But the clunk is in the back, near the differential. And it is directly lated to pushing the accelerator pedal... Meaning, on a straight flat smooth road if I let off and then push the pedal again.... Clunk
So it seems to be when the drive shaft is under load or not under load .
Thanks for the input though.
@@markshade8398 oh I see.
@7:43, when you put it into reverse i can still hear a clunk. are you saying it has quiet down the clunk? After i greased the front and rear diffs, i have noticed the clunk went away when putting into drive, but the reverse clunk has quiet down a bit.
That’s just the gear shifter, but I did still feel a slight thud so I ended up replacing the front diff bushings.
@@rywanders just watched your front diff bushing and it looks painful. I just got done doing my rack and pinion bushings and that was a pain too. I’ll save that job for another time. :)
@@cpenv it was! i really needed some ramps to lift the vehicle off the ground more. Still would have been tough but probably would have helped greatly.
I'm like #666. Good video, will have to do this job.
Best
Does the Cruiser have to be lifted on jack stands or can the driveline be greased while parked?
Needs to be lifted
@@rywanders Thanks
What’s the year and mileage on the beauty?
2004 and 194k
was the clunk while driving or sitting still putting the truck in gear?
Sometimes taking off from a stop and sitting still while switching into gear. I noticed a slight thud recently and plan to change out my front diff bushings here soon hopefully that will fix it.
stupid question, you don't need to jack the car up to do this right? If that's the case I would think if it moves a little I should be good and stop pumping.
I’m no expert in the matter, but it helps with rotating the drive line so you can get to all the zerks
if you can get under, you do not need to jack up. you will find, you cannot access all zerks. grease what you can and move the vehicle forward a bit to access others, then grease them.
Plesae KILL the music if you are talking...can not understand you for the loud music. Thanks
This video applies to Highlander, too. Thanks for posting.
Thank you for the feedback!
Just did this today, only complaint is BUY AN ELECTRIC GREASE GUN! My forearms are gonna be huge!
That’s the bonus! 😆 doubles as a gym sesh
@@rywanders 😂😂😂
Why did you jack up your SUV? Couldn't you just grease the slip joints while the tires on the ground and pump it max?
It’s what’s recommended and you can’t spin the drive shaft on the ground to get to the zerks.
I just did it yesterday without jacking it up. I grease the slip joint with Valvoline moly (gray) grease and use the Valvoline multi (red) for u-joints. I use an electric grease gun. So much easier and faster. I may have overdid it on the slip joint so I'm about to test drive to the gas station right now. Thanks for the video!@@rywanders
@@seahawksforever9504 ah electric grease gun sounds genius! Yeah go over some bumps and get that to push out the extra grease then wipe up the mess. Nice work!
Did this to My Land Cruiser a few months ago and it still Clunks
Probably need to fully replace the u joints.
@@rywanders That’s what my mechanic says.
could also be the cv axle outboard splines at the flange end
Good video. Lose the stupid music. Many people don’t hear well enough to hear you through the music.
Maybe just needed to lower it a bit more. I feel videos are “dry” without some background noise. Thx for the input.
Nice video, but very annoying music. Just focus on the subject. The music distracts what you're saying.
Agreed. Thank you
Kill the music please, otherwise great video!
Appreciate the feedback. I’ve eased up on music since this video.
This should be a 2 min videos. Too long
🤷🏻♂️
Thank you! Just got an LX470 and have the clunk. Going to try this fix out.
Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
