I wish you shot this one from the back like video 1. Hard to tell what you're doing when you pass it and hard to tell how you're spinning it in the left hand after the pass to keep the spin going in a clockwise motion

    • @aqasheclair2495

DSMNTL if your still up for the work, do one thing. Hold the staff in your left hand facing towards ground and move it round to let it go behind your back, just like you do with your right hand and it reaches on your back........... (same thing? i know) now try to rewind this motion >>>>> means.....bring it back to where you started from but rewinding every motion you did to take it on your back.........this rewind motion is what you need when your having staff on your back in right hand and you need to pass to left to bringing to front and start all over again.

Same problem I am having. I can't tell if when behind the back and both hands are on the staff if it's pinky against pinky, or pinky against thumb. And which hand is above the other. I'm trying it multiple ways and still having difficulty completing the spin back to the front.

    • @pandaman9414

@@henrytjernlund if you still need help you put your left hand below your right and you'll have both Pinky's pointing down

Thank you for these videos. I took martial arts as a teenager 45 years ago. Being a teenager I wasn't eligible for any weapons classes. The style was an Indonesian-Dutch blend of Kung Fu and other styles. Then the school went out of business and I never got back to it. Everything else in the area was "hard style" Karate. Which is fine if you want that. But I really liked the "soft style" Kung Fu. BTW, that's also about when the Kung Fu TV show was on.
I was doing some juggling as it's supposed to be good for brain health as you get up in age. I'm glad I found this and will add it to my routine. I'm mostly interested in the spinning and not so much the combat or striking. Thank you again.

Kung Fu and Martial Arts Weapons build so much. You may not use traditional Chinese Kung Fu weapons is a real fight but they are important to build a Martial Artist's strength, timing, endurance, mind, and focus! So in this video it's the Chinese Rattan Staff or Bo Staff! Spin it fast and spin it often!

I have studied your number 3spin video for quite a while and cannot get it right. I struggle with the left handed part and as I pass it back to my right hand it is always going anti clockwise. could you please show a video from behind you as I think this may help, thanks for your time and effort. kind regards Mark t.

  • @henrytjernlund

So far I am having the most difficulty with this spin. I can go front to back, both sides, with relative ease. But reversing that (on either side) and it goes wrong. I have gone super slow, and even have divided the motion up into small parts. It's almost like my wrist can do certain motions only one way.

try Stron Bone. its a supplement geared towards joint and bone strengthening. Studies show that bone density is increased by 30% and fracture risk reduced by 40%. The main ingredient is Strontium.

    • @henrytjernlund
      @henrytjernlund 5 років тому

I looked it up. Looks like it has some side effects and not just anyone should take it.
"New research from Europe suggests that patients on strontium ranelate may have increased risk of heart attacks and blood clots, and it is likely to be removed from the European market."
So be careful when taking supplements, especially if you are on other meds.

So because im that new i dont rellay know where to start with, im searching several videos and try to exercise at home, but so far i only got a broken window and some small injuries from hitting myself while trying a spin.. So what techniques do you recommend to start with?( i chose a white whod bo about 2 pounds weight)

I am not getting involved with the other comments, but to be fair these spins are good little exercises for people like me who just want to learn a bit of coordination and self discipline, and show off to my girlfriend. I know that you wouldn't do a lot of spinning in a fight but that doesn't bother me because I don't plan to get into any fights, and if I do, I very much doubt I will have my make-shift curtain pole bo staff at hand :)
But to be honest if I were in a fight situation with a bo staff, I would use the spinning as an intimidation tactic, inbetween sparring moves to show that I am calm and confident and in control of everything that is happening. Would be even cooler if I could do it from some nutty yoga position but I would probably break if I tried that.
Anyway thanks for these instructional vids, I am making good use of them with my curtain pole, and have smashed a lightbulb already :) I am still getting my speed up with number 1 spin

something i would add is to let the stick flow with gravity. Use muscle/control to keep the staff flowing with gravity or faster. To go faster or equal to the speed that gravity provides. But dont hit yourself in the head etc..
