@@wagnar I think the spins are a training exercise. They help you connect with the staff so it becomes an extension of your body. Thank you Jake and I hope wherever your are, you’re well 🌱
I've love these types of tricks as a kid growing up liking Ninja Turtles and Darth Maul and seeing that incredible movement from weapons to flips and all that basically influenced me to pick up freerunning. I'm def. gonna be trying all this later and next time keep the original audio in. The swinging of the staff always sounds dope!
LOL! Dude, these videos are genius! I set the video to play at .5 or .25 and I learned how to spin a bo staff from you! The crazy part is I"m actually getting good! LOL! Thanks!
For the uppercuts at 2:47 and 0:55, you want to train with your hand(s) at different rotation points along the staff. Further towards one end will increase the amount of inertia in the staff, but also raise the difficulty. You should be able to make adjustments to the hand position while doing this technique, even one handed. Note that adjusting one handed is not recommended for application b/c it will create a moment of vulnerability where you can be disarmed, unlike two-handed where one hand can always keep a firm grip on the shaft as you shift grip position.
I have watched this video like 100 times. Its my favorite next to the chain whip. I don’t have a staff, but I live in an oak forest, so I can use what I have. Thanks for this
Beautiful stick fencing work! It reminds me of an ancient stick fighting method that is still being taught in some parts of south India. It involves a lot of footwork compared to what is demonstrated in this video.
Tip: hold the staff with the right amount of grip, not too tight where it's difficult to maneuver or too loose where you might hurt yourself or others from the momentum
i think what you mean is grip the stick mainly with your pointer finger and thumb and loosley grip with the rest of your fingers use the middle finger pointer and pinky to help to direct the staff in the direction u wish it to go and use the pointer and thumb to hold onto the stick this allows more flexibilty in your wrist
I have never seen Chuck Norris use a BO staff. in any movie or anywhere else. Or seen him do anything more than yellow belt techniques, in movies. Yet he is more famous as a MA, than so many others. Cult of personality, perhaps.
Thank you for this vid. I am an FMA player and I wanted to add staff work to my skill set. Years ago, I watched this vid for technique on staff and developed my proficiency with it using your methods. I have integrated this set of technique into my version of FMA and continue to explore how to use more staff work in what I do. i am forever grateful for this vid and admire your work very much. Keep up the good work!!!
Spinning a ruler with my pencil is the extent of my present skills... and I haven't practiced it in eons. Thanks for the video! Donatello and Little John all the way!
Love this 😀 but will try slow speed know the long form sword teaching 8 form and 24 form to elderly incorporating long staff for stretches would love to spin slowly beautifully spins
@@DUB_87 I'm a fan of the green ranger, but isn't that a Japanese kata he's performing there? It seems Jake Mace is representing Chinese martial arts here. It only makes sense that the forms would have their differences, even though this video isn't a full form but rather individual techniques with a few of them strung together at the end. Anyway, if Mace is a fake then can you please point us to some evidence for it? If he is then I'd like to know, but "Look him up" doesn't really make for a convincing argument.
You're impressed by hand eye coordination? This dude wouldnt last a minute in an actual fightxD god people are so easily bewildered and amazed its sad.
@@rivergod21 my 10 year old nephew can do this with better coordination and i say he wouldnt last a minute cause if youve ever watched his other videos on "tips to use in a fight" he gives some false and somewhat hilarious advice that would surely get you KO'd by anyone who evern remotely knows how to throw a punch. No not a tool just a guy whos not easily fooled like your dumbass by a stick and some fancy movement.
I LOVE this, a beautiful practice. Thank you so much for posting. Recommendations on bo staffs ? I have a couple, but yours seems slightly smaller. Not sure if there’s a standard size, weight, etc
I love your Amazing talent sir, i am new learner i want to learn the spinning actions with sticks and rifles as they do in rifle drills, i want to learn more of bo staff from basics to intermediate and so on. Please make more of that stuff also.
can I just say the music is so soothing like I can forget everything while watching this video, be at ease and watch the staff spin, and perhaps recall when I had a wooden stick Its just an amazing and surprisingly grounding video
I've found my new 'isolation' training video. Lucky for me i have a large garden & crash helmet! Edit ;- No 1 doing ok, slow & smoth trying not to speed up. No 2 got cocky & a smack on the head. Back to no 1.
It's been 30 years since I've touched a staff or arnis sticks. I enjoyed the post and will try the front spin and behind the back pass. Thanks and I'll check out some more of your videos
Not much... Most of those techs are for show or for a "proof of concept" (the elements needed to master the techs are present in conventional striking and blocking). Plus there's also forms/kata depending on what you're doing. For an actual fight you want to focus on footwork, movement, striking, and blocking. Not spins.
Yeah ,this is nice for warming up,the first part I do also for that reason(maybe not as fast as you)! But for fighting we need more the "spear technics"and short "overhead movements! You should look for the wing chun stuff-form !!!
I'm a martial artist myself and my weapon of choice is the bo staff, so i feel your pain of not knowing where the heck to place your other hand in some certain moves
Signorina Lucia no he knows what he's doing it seems like there's been doing it for years you can tell I'm a new learner and I'm really trying to learn from this dude seems like he knows what he's doing where else can you get free lessons LOL
Something beautifully simple and elegant about a staff. Look out Darth Maul..! Don't know if the Kung Fu name for Technique #8 was originally the Overhead Helicopter spin...! Ha ha. Very nice to watch.

Who would win a fight? Bruce Lee with Nunchucks or Chuck Norris with a Staff?
chuck norris with a tooth pick
Bruce already kicked that ass. He'd come down from the other world to kick that arse again.
Bruce lee with his hands.
I have never seen Chuck Norris use a BO staff. in any movie or anywhere else.
Or seen him do anything more than yellow belt techniques, in movies. Yet he is more famous as a MA, than so many others. Cult of personality, perhaps.
***** The one you were thinking of when you asked this question.

Freaking Awesome Donatello! 👍
Cowabunga dude :)
I'm sorry but Donatello wasn't this sick with the staff. This guy is 👑.
Love this 😀 but will try slow speed know the long form sword teaching 8 form and 24 form to elderly incorporating long staff for stretches would love to spin slowly beautifully spins
Amazing awesome!! Thanks for starting slow so we can see proper hand placement😄👏🏽
Jake Mace is a fake. Look him up. This is how a Bo Staff Kata is supposed to look. ua-cam.com/video/tOit0Gro3Ls/v-deo.html
Robert Wisdom you’re the fake, just because no one wants to watch your video you come here to leech off some one else
Piss off
@@DUB_87 I'm a fan of the green ranger, but isn't that a Japanese kata he's performing there? It seems Jake Mace is representing Chinese martial arts here. It only makes sense that the forms would have their differences, even though this video isn't a full form but rather individual techniques with a few of them strung together at the end. Anyway, if Mace is a fake then can you please point us to some evidence for it? If he is then I'd like to know, but "Look him up" doesn't really make for a convincing argument.

You Sir, are amazing! The flow, timing, and speed you wield the staff appears so impeccable. Wonderful to see you work!

What should the length of the stick be? How does the length of the stick affect spinning? Thank you!

Woah! A blue car!
Loved it, only wish u could show it slower so I could learn a move or two...
He has some tutorial videos up.
Reduce speed in settings.
Michael, thanks for the tip, slowing the action down really helped me.

can I just say the music is so soothing
like I can forget everything while watching this video, be at ease and watch the staff spin, and perhaps recall when I had a wooden stick
Its just an amazing and surprisingly grounding video
I've found my new 'isolation' training video.
Lucky for me i have a large garden & crash helmet!

Insidentently nice yard, garden, Dojo. Your dog knows its boundaries. :-)
Insidentently.
Would like to see those spins against a tire or a heavy bag. Not sure how much of the momentum you could pull through a target.
Not much... Most of those techs are for show or for a "proof of concept" (the elements needed to master the techs are present in conventional striking and blocking). Plus there's also forms/kata depending on what you're doing.
For an actual fight you want to focus on footwork, movement, striking, and blocking. Not spins.
EXACTLY what I was gonna say. I want to see him hit something and keep momentum.
Yeah ,this is nice for warming up,the first part I do also for that reason(maybe not as fast as you)! But for fighting we need more the "spear technics"and short "overhead movements!
You should look for the wing chun stuff-form !!!
very informative, love your content! P.S. Mr. Miyagi wants his house back!
I'm a martial artist myself and my weapon of choice is the bo staff, so i feel your pain of not knowing where the heck to place your other hand in some certain moves

Kung Fu & Tai Chi Center w/ Jake Mace how long should the staff be?
There are traditionally 3 different lengths. 3ft (half staff or Hanbo), 4 ft (or shoulder length or Jo) or the 6ft Bo.
the jo is my fave!

thank you for the step by step techniques. How long should it take if you practise everyday for an hour? What other wrist exercise do you recommend >>
Imagine hitting your own head at that speed..
