The big hope is that the section between Moorooduc and Baxter will be reinstated, imagine steaming from Mornington to Ballarat or Bendigo would be an amazing run!
It seems much of the track is still there. Even if some has to be replaced, VicTrack must have a lot of used rail in store as a result of all the grade separation they have done. Plus signalling equipment.
@@ctwentysevenj6531 rail is probably ok but the sleepers would need replacement along with fresh ballast, points would need to be re installed at Baxter along with an automated switcher that the main network control can operate, let’s hope it happens one day soon 🙏
I think one of T411's tasks during the 80's and 90's while in Govt service, was hauling rakes of new cars between Campbellfield and Enfield on the SG. Great video.
I'm not sure many passengers would use it once the novelty wore off. Most of the line travels through farmland and the location of the terminus is inconvenient for anyone wanting to visit Mornington's main street, or the beach.
@@anakinskywalker4113 The Victorian government were only going to electrify the Frankston line to Baxter unless all the level crossings are removed. The estimated cost was something like $700 million to electrify the line, duplicate it, build bridges across several main roads and rebuild Baxter station. Extending to Mornington would probably cost the same again. In theory they could run V/Line Sprinter diesels instead but I doubt many people would use the service if we assume the frequencies were comparable to the two-hour gaps between Sprinters on the Stony Point line. Meanwhile the bus to Frankston runs every 20 minutes. The 5 km of disused track between Baxter and Moorooduc stations hasn't been used in almost 30 years. It needs to be completely rebuilt, even for steam trains to use it. Last I heard the Mornington tourist railway folks had no real plans to reconnect to the main line, probably mostly due to cost.
@@RichardFelstead1949 if you mean Peninsula Link, then no, it is not a blocker as they built a bridge over the easement and there remain vestiges of the original track through there.
I believe that there is a supermarket on Mornington station's original location. Google earth shows the line and street view shows the old line almost to this location.
Railway Grove is besides the Centro shopping Centre. If you google earth Railway Grove, Mornington, just south of the roundabout, opposite the shopping centre entrance and by the zebra crossing is a plaque for the original site of Mornington Station.
Why demolish it really? They just had to have that exact place to put a Coles or Woolies. Was it a fantastic old historic building similar to Lilydale station? Unfortunate.
@@acesretroonline 1981 was when the railway ceased operation and 2011 when Centro shopping centre was opened. I suppose some would call it progress. But, I’d say a lot of people would love a railway line that actually took you to Mornington on a regular service. Yeah you’d think the building could have been kept as a cafe or something at least
1966,remember being on a steam train excursion to Mornington,my earliest train memory. This line should have never closed. At least it still lives on. It would be good if they could extend the line to Baxter as the rail alignment still exists
I live in Frankston, and my grandfather was based at the Balcombe training base in WW2. I have seen images of large groups of Australian Soldiers marching from Mornington to Mt Martha. I imagine he marched. Now I have walked the same line that he would have taken nearly 100 years ago. The tourist train is a fun hour or so as well. Thanks
I think of what this line could have been every time I rumble over the buried rail crossing on Nepean Highway, just north of Main St / Mornington Tyabb Rd intersection. Take a look at street view on goggle maps and you can still see the rails.

Lovely video! It would be so good to see actual metro services on this corridor!
It would be so easy to add metro services since there is already a corridor & tracks.

The station would have been about where the carpark is, and the centre itself where the yard was.
