After watching this video I realized that the niche is you. Whether it's about Instagram, UA-cam or your vlogs, I think I just like you so I'll watch because I know you're good at what you do and I'll enjoy the video. Plus there was a ton of good information here. Thanks, Katie. I hope my *pivot* goes well. 🤞

Literally perfect timing. As I am about to post my first extreme pivot video this weekend. I have made small pivots before, from DIYs to Thrifting. I have stuck with thrifting and reselling for quite a while but took a long youtube break and became a minimalist during this time. My passions have changed so much. I have a few video ideas in mind that will (hopefully) help with the pivot. Thanks so much for this video!

What I love more and more about watching you is that you actually tackle TRUE issues with more experienced creators. I tried looking for "changing your niche" so much online when I did change mine and if your video was there a year ago my channel would probably be much much better than it is now. Thank you!
More context: I've basically decided that I'm starting from scratch to talk about what I'm interested in (social media) and leaving my current socials for my current niche which is tech reviews. I don't wanna change niches again and it frightens me so much to fail again without being able to go back.

I started off telling life stories with a message in for my sons, along the way I started talking about music, and most recently why I'm going back to DVDs - this has given me a lot of growth, but I felt like I was putting myself into a little prison. All of those things are niches, but in truth, I'm my niche. Like everyone else, I see the world through my eyes and I want to talk about the things that interest me and I want to return to the the reason I started UA-cam in the first place.

I'm currently transitioning from the booktube niche to more lifestyle content vlogs. I'm still talking about books in my videos because I will be reading anyway, whether I make videos about it or not. I will be saving this video and referring back to it throughout my transition journey. Thank you for your advice!

Hi Katie! Thank you so much for all the great information you share with us. I would love it if you would do a video that focused on how to find an audience. This step has come up for me in different situations throughout the years, as an artist, as a writer and now as a want to be UA-camr. I've heard the advice to identify your audience quite often, but I'm rather clueless as to how to do that. After watching many of your videos, I think if anyone could explain it, it would be you. I doubt I'm the only one who wonders about this. Thanks again for all you do!

I did random daily vlogs and travel vlogs and I pivoted to just cruise travel. I niched down to just one specific cruise line and my analytics clearly showed I was reaching a different audience than what I want to target. Now I'm shifting to a bit different cruise content, aiming for moms wanting to cruise with their kids instead of the specific cruise line that I was focusing on.

This is so helpful! I love this and I hid my all my old videos about my curly hair. I wasn’t vibing with being a beauty channel after a while and wasn’t sure what to do. I had a lot of videos from 2010 forward to about 2017.
One day I woke up and hid all the old videos and pressed on because I couldn’t bring myself to create a totally new channel. And I’ve always wondered if I should have created a totally new one.
Now that I have finally reached over 1000 subscribers I want to get more into vlogging and you’ve given me the courage and the blessing to do that.

Privatizing old content is key. I just started a new channel for a niche I thought was close to my main channel, but every time I posted about it, I lost subscribers. By getting those videos off the main channel, my views and subscribers spiked again. Also on my new channel, I personally can see how much happier I am because I’m talking to an audience that’s interested in the topic, instead of trying to convince another audience it’s cool.

  • @CitiesByDiana

I needed this video. Im a gaming creator and every time I even post a different game I lose so many subscribers it negates any growth i gain from every other video from that day...non gaming content related to my niche does even worse, even though im relatively big on TikTok for a few different things, bringing that content onto UA-cam has been such a struggle 😢

  • @cobotoast

It hasn’t been that long since I started UA-cam but I’d always wanted to start with vlogs.
My idea was that I’d like to attract people who want cozy/chill vibes. But I’ve been really into crochet nowadays so I ended up in a Crochet Vlog niche! I would love to make videos on all kinds of cozy hobbies, not just crochet (gaming/other crafts/eventually small business studio vlogs)
But overall, I would say my aim with my channel currently is to bring in subscribers who are interested in the vibes more than the specific niche.

I started my UA-cam channel when I was preparing for jaw surgery a little over 2 years ago, and gained a (very) small following documenting the entire process (a year of prep, the actual surgery, and looong recovery process lol).
Now I'm transitioning to focus more on my overall health/wellness journey and how I'm managing long-term chronic illness. Since the jaw surgery was a part of my bigger picture "health optimization" process, I'm hoping some of the people who have followed me specifically for the jaw surgery stuff will hang around and that the transition will feel pretty natural!

Why not start new channels? 🤔 While changing niches gradually makes sense, you can quickly build a new audience already interested in your new videos without looking at your analytics drop in your other channel. You can then adjust your posting schedule on the old channel to keep it sustainable, and if you so choose, you can create transition content to migrate viewers and subscribers.

I think this can be a good option if you are changing the subject completely (I did this cause I was also changing the language of my content), but I also understand it can be hard if you have some sort of audience in a channel already. Sometimes it's hard to let go haha

Same here. I changed the language of my channel recently and my views are soooo low that brings tears :/

I think you gotta make the call based on how much potential overlap you have. Because in some cases it makes more sense to pivot than to start from fresh (like with my Instagram to UA-cam example) however, in the situation where I privated all my videos - in that case I could have equally just started a new channel. I was just attached and nervous about starting fresh lol so I took that approach!

@@katie Yeah, that makes sense. If you have such a large overlap, it's easy enough to create transitional content if you're still somewhat interested in your current niche, but for videos on Mennonite and van life, separate channels are quick to set up.

So, the frog thing is a myth. Turns out humans are far more adaptable, and far more able/willing to rationalize that "This is fine."

So should have made videos on how to grow your instagram by living in a van? 😂
