  • This flow drill features kata oyo from Chinte and kanku Dai. It starts with a wrist release/capture and strike from Chinte followed by a standing arm bar. A simple gyaku waza for the arm bar is included. The drill ends with a short combination from Kanku Dai that is used to clear a limb, a strike the neck, knee the stomach and finishes with a take-down. At the end of the video, you'll see footage of two students running through the drill for the first time. This drill is part of my 5th kyu curriculum.
This is a flow drill, not a street-ready fighting combination.
For more detail on the Chinte application, please see this video:

Great video on flow drills. Is it common to mix and match bunkai techniques depending on how your opponent responds? I ask to see if adaptation is done in contrast to following the kata bunkai to the letter.

I do it all the time. There is benefit to sticking with one kata for the sake of learning what that kata has to offer. I find that over time, I enjoy sequencing what ever flows nicely. Iain Abernethy makes a Ghost Buster reference to this as "crossing the streams". Mixing katas seems to bother some people. ;)

Form always has to give way to function and adaptation, otherwise, it will fail. No plan survives first contact with the enemy.
