a few days ago Dream Theater won a grammy for this song, The Alien, I decided to come back to my reaction/analysis video to pin this comment as a reminder that this actually happened, to commemorate and celebrate an amazing achievement for a band that gives no fucks!
Dream Theater, the band that paved the way marrying two concepts that no one ever thought to put together METAL and PROGRESSIVE elements
I have a been a fan of this band since the summer of 1998 when I was a measely 12 year old, it is so cool to see these guys get an award after 35 years of believing in themselfs, their art, and their music and to say that they have changed the world is an understatement.
the list of bands they have inspired and the expansion this genre in music saw after Dream Theater hit the ground running is vast!
Congratulations John Petrucci, John Myung, Jordan Ruddess, Mike Mangini and James Labrie for such and incredible career!

Mangini tears this song a new one. I love Portnoy but there’s no way he’s pulling a song like this off.

(๑˃ᴗ˂)ﻭ AAAAAH!! THIS IS SOOO COOL! YA'LL SEEM SO FRIKIN CHILL! And YES. Buno and his love for Dream Theater and prog metal is no secret. I have more appreciation for music because of him. Those 4 dislikes are Dream Theater haters (눈_눈)

I prefer Labrie's vocals over growling garbage.

The last few years of DT with Portnoy, there was this feeling of pretended "metal" aspect to their songs. With Mangini, they seem to be more free in their compositions. Just My humble opinion and love both drummers dearly.

Have y'all checked out Train of Thought. James Labrie's vocals are fierce on this album. I also feel it's one of the best metal albums ever composed. It's super heavy and very complex.

Compared to the singles from the last 7 or so albums, The Alien stands out and is pretty amazing. In my opinion the best single we've had in a long time.

Great reaction guys, I really enjoyed your analysis, something is not typical to me , a diehard fan like you ;) the sound of drum for starters, he IMO has finally found his place as a equal role to others not a back up instrument, in the past 3 albums his sound was not this bold, I believe if you give it some more tries you can hear what I mean, the thing you call as essence I believe is here finally after 10 years, the drum stands out as it should. Also the bass, I think you missed it, myung is somehow leading with his rhythm in the last two instrument/solo parts, he is not laid back, it reminds me of instrumental part of in the name of god where the base starts the feel and keep it through all the shredding of guitar and keyboard. but as a whole I can hear some very very simillar parts as before, maybe you hear them two, the beginning instrumental I hear IN THE PRESENCE OF ENEMIES 2, then when vocal begins, I hear PALE BLUE DOT, and at those solos there are parts that sound very identical to BREAKING ALL ILLUSION/ ILLUMINATION THEORY parts. anyways I really liked the video especially the combo of you two with two different perspectives and Also I enjoyed your honesty.

BTW those are called Octobans, and they have been used since the Awake album at least.
His are just a bit different then the Tama ones used by Portnoy

Thank you! yes I was reminded heavily of Portnoy by those octobans, I don't think I had noticed Mangini use them before... I could be wrong though

No it’s not about aliens. It’s about how we are aliens. Like if we went to another planet we would be the aliens
