I didn't particularly care for the bed bar that comes standard on the 2024 Tacoma Trailhunter, so I swapped it out with something that looks better, functions better, and is all aluminum construction to boot. Lets dive into the Ibex bed rack from Küat.

Still waiting on my TH to get out of the inspection hold and your videos are all that keeps me sane! LOL
BRO!!!! Please keep the videos coming!!! I dig 'em. I want this truck so bad. I'll be coming from a '21 4Runner to the Tacoma Trailhunter.... and I can't wait. Your videos are inspiring!! TY TY
Hope you wait for next year's model!
@@dontask7898 why so? I'm probably going to wait anyways, just because funds are not available yet. But I'm just curious and want as much info as I can get. ty ty
@JaredDonVito-u3i TFl broke the front diff, icons video shows them blowing the struts through the shock tower because of the cheap metal, and on the tacoma forums people are having serious transmission hunting problems. So after only a couple months this truck is falling apart.
@@dontask7898 Thanks for all the info!! I will for sure have to wait, in hopes that they fix these issues. ty ty
I really like how the build is coming along! this rack looks great and I love how there is a path to upgrade it to be enclosed. Let me tell you as someone who goes on trips with a exposed bed rack. You will want to upgrade to the enclosed system or a shell after a couple trips. Side access to the bed is super super important you will end up putting something in the back of the bed you need to reach only to figure out you need to pull everything out to get to it. Additionally, we buy all of this expensive gear for it to be exposed to the elements sitting in the bed. I live in the FL where it rains everyday in the summer so it has been not the best experience going with a rack like this. I am awaiting my RSI Smartcap in the mail currently. I travel with two dogs so i don't have very much room in the back seats.
I really like the idea of mounting my bike up on the side using this rack, but I also like the idea of a camper and having an enclosed bed to keep stuff clean and dry. I also like the idea of ever being able to afford any of this 😂
Hi there - We have a fully enclosed panel kit launching later this year. It's a modular system so you can use all 4 sides or switch the side panels out with molles to fit your trip needs best.
Yeah I fell in love with this rack watching this video then built one out on their website and ... well... I'm out. LOL
The Kuat Ibex is super awesome! I hope it serves you well!
To those wondering if the offroading is in the video or not since he said it, it's not, probably in the new videos, this one is him installing the rack.
Awesome…I pick my Trail hunter up next week so definitely gunna be paying attention to some of the stuff your doing.
Also gunna go to Expo east to hopefully drum up some more ideas or find some cool stuff.
Building out my back seat for the 2 dogs first then going to bed racks, tent, and awning
Will get my Trailhunter delivered in a couple of weeks and I will definitely go with this rack, looks great
Yes the Ibex is great looking but the Molle panels are extremely thin aluminum. Mine snapped after two months holding a 5lb propane tank. Mostly pavement driving. Kuat's customer service is also great and they more than compensated me. Also the front Molle panel is not included and I highly recommend getting it. I noticed lateral movement without it and wouldn't trust the rack without it on rough terrain. Finally when you put the rack together there are no internal threads , the bolt cuts the threads into the aluminum when installing. If you find the bolts hard to install the first time that is the reason. You are not cross threading the bolts. Finally if you drive anything other than the Tacoma don't count on the panel kit being available for your vehicle. I've contacted them twice and they said they don't know when or if there will be panel kits for other vehicles.
Hmm that makes me curious about the threads, mine definitely had threads cut. It takes quite a bit of work to cut threads into aluminum with a tap, let alone a bolt. I’m curious if yours had a manufacturing issue.
The molle panels are fairly thin, but I had mine heavily loaded down with the 2 Zarges cases and it did fine, but that was for 3 months so I can’t speak to long term. They are a solid company though and I’m not surprised to hear they treated you well.
Thank you for stopping by and sharing your experience.
@@IndependenceOverland I contacted Kuat and that's what they told me. That you are cutting the threads when you install the bolts. Try putting the bolt in by hand...there is no way you can do it. They are awesome to deal with and the best customer service.
Man! That’s freaking nice! Looking forward to seeing how you set it up
Really enjoying watching you modify the truck. Have you considered adding a "drawer" system to your truck's bed to give you a little more theft and rain protection?
I have the Kuat with prinsu on top and on the cab. It’s perfect
Awesome video! I’m enjoying your build. Looking forward to the goose gear goodies. 💪🏻
Great vid! I plan on purchasing this rack, once Kuat releases the panels that enclose it all in.
It looks like a really awesome design. I am surprised no other companies have nailed it yet, but from what I have seen Kuat definitely has.
I was debating between this and Xtrusion Overland and ended up going with the Xtrusion Overland racks and toppers. Both are solid products.
Do u have images and what setup u got?
@@alejandroperez9855I prefer the Xtrusion overland new XO Skeleton rack/topper/camper setup, have not received it yet
I'm holding out for a smartcap. Might do a softtop til then, want to be able to close things up.
Not that it really matters since you technically can mount them both ways, or if you even care, but you installed the Molle panels upside down. The bend section is meant to be on the bottom.
Kuat is really flooding the influencer zone with this rack
Looks slick man!!!
looks better now 👍
Love your videos
Arb and Toyota should have had a rack that took advantage of the stock one by being a modular set up. Such a waste to toss these stock ones in the garbage.
ARB has a bed rack with molle panels it looks alot more sturdy than this kit, although this is alot less expensive it's always quality or quantity imo. Overall, it looks decent.
Arb does, its just stupid expensive.
once you got your tent up top, are you still able to utilize the rear view camera and 360 cams?
Yes, everything works perfectly with the Kuat system!
Nice addition but I never understand why these types of bed solutions are appealing. Soon as you go off-road everything in the bed is so dusty and dirty. Spend half your time cleaning off your gear. Why not an enclosed solution?
100%. RSI or similar as there are tons of choices. I went RSI primarily for the table storage cause we’re a family of 4. And the RSI has a pressure intake to actively suppress dust. They are a bit more expensive sure but nearly equivalent in weight.
Yeah, there's gotta be something better out there.
We have a 3rd Gen Tacoma, leitner rack. Loved it. Very usable and solid. Dust/elements were an issue for off-roading/camping. Switch to a shell. Compromise with utility side of things. I miss the rack when working on projects. Love the shell most of the time. Basically a giant trunk.
I didn't want to be crawling into my bed for a mid size... Maybe a full size it would be better. When I worked in a 2500 ram with a flat canopy that was ok as a 26 yo at the time. I'm looking forward to being able to stand up on the bed when I strap my surfboard on one side. Niche case, but ok with me. Have a tonneau cover but it would collect dust if not vented with a positive pressure opening, I'll bet a window crack and some tailgate sealing helps with a cap
Well that's not very "overlandy" though is it? UA-camrs don't really do practical they do clickable. And if they send it to you for free well then can't beat it!😂
Hey man cool rack. I love following the progress of your build.
My biggest question for you as a truck guy with a bed, is what are you doing to do for a fridge set up now? Inside cab or out in the bed? As a jeep guy I often wondered that because mine is in the back on a slide hidden from the elements. Now you have a nice plug in the box of the truck on these trail hunters, so with an open rack I'm curious if you plan on having it outside?
I'm asking this because I plan to move to a truck eventually.
Wow!! Very nice!!
Did you go for the 5’ or 6’ bed on the trailhunter? Looks good!
rear seat delete? looking forward to that.
I got my Trailhunter (Ice Cap) on July 11th and am loving it. I replaced the ARB half rack as well, but with a Tyger bed rack I got for 500$. I put a Thule Tepui on top of it and it is working great. Are you going to keep the roof rack? I am trying to mount Roam 83L cases with the Rugged mounts, but I can't figure out how to get the mounts on the OEM roof rack. I can't find any info on accessories for the rack. I'll subscribe to see how your build proceeds and compare notes.
That rack is sick, thinking to get one. Are crossbar risers must for RTT? I want to have tent as low as possible.
It depends on the tent and roof rack. If its a compact RTT that side flips, then no. But for a clamshell its probably a good idea. My Toyota roof rack stucks up really high too, another rack would give more clearance as well. Kuat actually just launched a pretty sweet looking low profile roof rack.
@@IndependenceOverland Thank you, much appreciated. Do you happen to know crossbar width and height? I am planning Thule RTT, which has mounting brackets so crossbar size is crucial. Can not find this info anywhere :(
How much weight can the bed hold above the box? Ford Ranger is requiring reinforcement if weight exceeds 88lbs!!
I have 24 Off Road Tacoma. I'm curious before I decide what I can add.( These new trucks are so damn flimsy)
Love the truck but why not get a Trail hunter 4runner?
The 4 runner doesn’t have a truck bed. Keep watching, the whole build will make sense soon. 🤙
Ive heard that roof rack makes a lot of noise, i would be ripping that off if thats the case.
Good luck with those front bumps stops I heard they are puny
That's with the Bilstein shocks on the TRD OR, don't know if either of the halo trims have the same issue (the pro can lift off and come down without issue, so I doubt the pro has that issue)
Have you had any issues with the front strut top hats that break? Icon made a video about it.
thats a rad shirt!
Pretty rad company yaknowwhatImean?
Hey I just got a TRD sport full-size bed with double cab and I have the digital camera rear view will this rack clear and not obstruct it? And is it possible to still use a bed cover?
It will not obstruct the camera view, so you’re good to go. There is one specific bed cover that will work, I forget the name of it.
@ awesome that was my biggest worry of not finding something that would block the camera, I’m assuming this rack supports ladders? Which is what I would like to put on top for work
@@IndependenceOverland also do you know if this will work with a bed cover?
Comment on payload. Despite door sticker saying 1215 lb payload - the GVWR minus curb gets you to almost 1500 pounds - anyone know why this is the case? Safety factor? 1215 is good considering it has so much on it from the factory - but I think it’s higher.
Mine isnt the same, it comes out to 1215. I will look at it again to make sure I am not reading it incorrectly.
❤
I have trail hunter 6 feed ded. I need ded rack the same as yours
Links below!
Wrap the truck to preserve paint.. put your brand into the wrap..
Do you think 285/70/18s will go on this truck with no mods at all (not even removal of that safety crash pad)? I want to upgrade the tires on my TH but don’t have enough data to know how big I can go without mods. If anyone has a TH and knows the answer, please let me know.
I would assume those will fit no problem.
@@IndependenceOverland I am thinking the same because I’ve got over an inch room in the tightest spots
Meh. I think truck camper is the way to go now.
In opinion buy base model and start building yourself
imagine paying almost 80k and you still got to change shit out
People have been doing it with Jeep Rubicons for years. 🤙
