In this video I explain why some people like to play flight simulator. Again, 'play' is not really the right word, it's more of an insult to us. We simply FLY flight simulator! This video uncovers all the reasons behind people who:
- Fly airliners from A to B in a virtual world
- Fly touch and goes with general aviation aircraft
- Fly virtual formation flights or missions in fighter jets
- Etc. etc. etc.!

Why do people play sims in general?.. farming sim, truck sim,... To expierence a life they otherwise yould not live.. as you said. Maybe they took a different careerpath or just incapable/not have enough of starting a farm or flying a plane.. :) .. i coiud never afford a pilots license because of bills i have ro pay and family and stuff xD.. but with fs i can experience this .. without the mostly lethal consequences of crashing.. love your vids.. could you ti a series in msfs2020 of how to start up various planes in the game? I can fly the icon A5 .. its basically a sky car xD but struggle with other types .. xD .. keep it on

50 years ago I took flying lessons. I got my private pilot license but as time went on, other things became more important and I quit flying. I ran across Flight Simulator and wondered how much I remembered. Fired up a Cessna 172, did a few touch and goes and felt very, very good about myself. It's great fun and a very positive experience. Also, much much cheaper than the real thing! :)
Thanks for watching, Scott! :)

You need to add 2 more reason
#4 Retired - Want to keep expanding your flying experience in a virtual world.
Me; Stroke in 2011 makes me rescind my pilot (and driver) licenses, at 73 y/o rather be flying and learning more than playing cards or bingo.
#5 Travel -
Me; Everywhere I travel virtually I research (google) about the real locations learning more about their environment, customs, fashion, cuisine, lifestyle, etc... It's been a great experience for me, doing what I used to do.
Those are some very good reasons indeed, thanks for watching! :)
Me too!
Reason #6 Research - I write novels about aviation, and use Flight Simulator to see what a particular flight would look like! (Well, I used to write, at any rate -- right now it's on hold because many of the other writers (and publishers, and reviewers) declared war against me for being an American patriot!)
Reason #7 - It's too hot to go outside and play (as is often the case in California and other southern states in the summer), and you want something to do which won't make you get hotter still!
I'm a flight simmer, yet I go out shooting, driving, and hanging about over all. Flying simulation is a learning curve for AvGeeks and even IRL pilots them self's.
Yeah... I only met one friend in my entire simming life that is also a flight simmer, it's really hard to talk about with other people, they sometimes asked me what was the point haha. Specially my parents, they preferred me to go outside and play, and told me fight simming was just a game and never was going to teach me something.
Now in flight school, and all that knowledge really pays off.
That's why YT and channels like yours are a great place to learn and share this passion.
Couldn't agree more! :)
That's pretty much me
Yeah, my dad has asked me many times "what's the point of flight simming"? But on the other hand, he is not interested AT ALL in aviation. For him aeroplanes (and trains, boats etc) are just one method of travelling... So I kinda understand why he doesn't 'get' simulators.
But it was annoying when he initially thought flight sim is just a game and couldn't believe we're flying with real aviation charts (he thought the charts are not available to the public due safety reasons).
I love flight simulation because it's a culmination of the lessons, tutorials, and procedures that you've learned over the years. It gives you an interactive learning process and it's the perfect avenue for channeling your pure passion for aviation.

2 activities in my life:
- Flight sim
- Planes spotting
Nice!
I can't afford to fly, so this is the next best thing, and I love planes, so it's right up my alley
Whenever I take off from an airport following flight plan, my heart pounds. Flight simmers only know it's feeling. No need to explain to non flight simmers.
I recognize that feeling! :)
When I was a young lad I dreamed of being an airline pilot. Like you mentioned for many reasons my life went down a different path. One that did, however, afford me the opportunity to fly across the country quite a bit. Mostly in large airliners but also in small company planes where I was able to sit in the co-pilot seat on occasion. All of the controls just looked so cool yet so complicated. So a big part of the experience for me is understanding how it all really works. Being able to look at a complex cockpit and actually know what all of the switches and gauges actually do. I spend a lot of time learning all that in great detail and setting up my rig to replicate the real world as closely as possible. The learning is the biggest part for me. And now that I am recently retired it has turned into an amazing hobby. I have established goals to work toward too. Like learning to use VATSIM, creating UA-cam videos to share with friends, working my way up to flying larger jets, etc. All just part of the experience for me. Yes I have a life outside of practicing with my simulator, but enjoy every moment I spend on it and make zero excuses for the time I spend. I love every minute of it. From the thrill I feel doing it all correctly to the anxiety I feel when things go wrong - and they do. Great video man....you did the flight simulator world a service. Keep up the good work man. Cheers!!
Thanks for sharing your story! :)
Great video, I've always had a love of aviation probably as I grew up living next to LXGB. Health problems stopped me getting a PPL so I got Microsoft flight simulator instead. My usual flights are cross-country (UK) VFR with touch and go's along the way in my Bonanza. Using real world weather and vatsim if there's coverage means no two flights are the same.
Thanks for watching! :)
Because we love aviation. ❤️

How do I change pmdg 737 cockpit quality settings like from medium to high or max quality??? ... is it just changeable by p3d main graphics menu or in other place ??
When I was a young kid I wanted to become a pilot, but unfortunately life got in the way as it always does. I’m still young, will become 20 soon, but getting a PPL or CPL is impossible for me because of medical issues.
Fortunately, I can still experience the dream I had as a kid in a simulator. My love for aviation persisted over the years, and flying around in a virtual plane is great. Personally, I also love the fact that I DON’T have to be staring at my screen all of the time like in other games, I can just do some chores or whatever while I’m flying. It’s the perfect game really ;-).
I love it because it truly relaxes me and takes me away from every day stress.
Good reason!
Reasons #1 and #3 apply to me. I love aviation, but it's not a poor mans hobby. I'm not poor, but it's still far more expensive to get your PPL than I can afford since I retired. Flight simming is a great way to at least semi-accurately operate a simulated aircraft and learn how to do things in a realistic manner. I love learning all I can about flying GA aircraft, route planning and trying to emulate what I've learned in the sim. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but for me it's a great hobby; especially when combined with Vatsim.
Nice video. Thx. Which flight planning software did you use on 5:53?

I use my SIM for pre flighting a new course and approach prior to getting into my real plane. I load up Ortho4XP scenery and it really helps with being familiar with the new terrain. Also, when the weather is crummy and I need a flight fix, I fly the SIM in nice weather and then I feel like I have had a great day....OH FORGET TO SAY,, I FLY MY SIM IN VR MODE ONLY!
Oh this video is going to help my friends and family understand. Thanks for creating this video. Will be really helpful.👍
Hope they'll enjoy it! :D Thanks for watching!
I fly 737's for a major U.S. carrier and did 10 years's in the USAF flying F16's.
While there are many individuals who use MFS or X-plane as a "game". It has been my experience that a significant number of "simmers" do so for the reasons you cited. Most at some point in their life admitted aspiring to flying for the military or the airlines and/or they have found financing training in the civilian sector prohibitive. If one has a muscular pc or desktop there can be a degree of immersion that is fairly sophisticated.
I'm not on board with the assumption that even the most sophisticated payware aircraft or freebie--such as the Zibo Mod 737 (which I'm using with my son to introduce him to CRM--allows you to learn about aircraft systems (or flight dynamics) at anything beyond a rudimentary level.
To cite one example, even a highly skilled military pilot that has never flown heavies can need six months of line flying before he (or she) begins to nail descents in a 737-800. It's surprisingly challenging to stay on profile and simmers will generally just attempt to let LNAV or VNAV do the job which results in finding yourself too high, too fast, or too close during the approach . I could write a book on the demands of real world flying vis a vis simming. Consider the very important element of "Flex Temperature" which impacts critical aspects of takeoff. There have been real-world accidents when this number has been inaccurately calculated and at least insofar as the Zibo mod goes, most simmers ignore it for a simple reason: they can't get the charts or software from Bowing to calculate it.
Then too, enter your flight plan from the OFP into the FMS and you just sit back and wait until you hit the TOD to get back to work. In the real world, you might plan for a particular STAR and runway only to have ATC say, "Not so fast. You're going to be vectored for 31 (At KLGA)." So much for your pre descent planning,
All that being said, both X-Plane and Microsoft, even if seen by the uninformed as simple games, can, as you said, translate some degree of skill to real world flying. The problem is that you can fairly easily identify pilots who begin taking flying lessons because they spend a lot of time looking at the gauges rather than out the window. Any simmer who has a career goal of flying should be particularly careful about the habits that can be formed, forget about the buzz from greasing one on in Paris or LAS Vegas, and combine his sim time with any one of the many excellent online
programs that take you through your first flight through solo, etc. and learn to do things in a very disciplined manner--unless, of course, your end-game is just to get some warm fuzzies taking a Microsoft 767 from JFK to LAX.
Thanks for your comment! That's definitely true, however I do want to point out there are really different levels of 'deepness' when it comes to flight simming. From a personal perspective, I always create flight plans, including calculations for takeoff and thrust reduction with weight and appropriate trim settings etc. Those calculators do actually exists, albeit probably not as accurate as the stuff used in the real world. Then again, some people just like to takeoff and take an airliner from A to B without all that stuff. It really depends on what you want to simulate. For me, the multitasking skills that you develop by interacting with ATC while operating the jet through different modes of automation and hand flying (I try to handfly whenever I can) are important. Throw in the occassional VOR/DME, NDB or visual approach and you learn more about 'flying' the aircraft rather than just relying on VNAV and LNAV.
That being said, yes, it is dangerous to form habits. On my first flying lesson years ago, I also looked at the instruments, but the instructor put the map in front of them so I had to look outside. A lesson quickly learned. It's something that I'm also considering for future flight training (I'm now in the selection process for that). I don't fly too many flightsim flights and I will probably not be flying a lot of flightsim during potential flight training, just to start from an as neutral position as possible. Yet I do believe the flightsim experience has developed certain multitasking skills that can be very useful. We all form habits that may later turn out to be wrong, but if you have the motivation and are strong enough to change them in light of a career as a real world pilot, I think it will be less hard to change them.
Nice one, enjoyed this video! For me its just passion, always wanted to be an pilot but unfortunately not (yet) succeeded. Luckily I live very close to Schiphol to enjoy the planes:)
Thanks! :)
Pure passion! Great video!
Thank you, Roberto! :D
Which video editing software do you use?
My reason for flying a flight sim is that after flying for 20 years (from mid-60s to mid 80's) not only in the midwestern and western states, but also Mexico, Latin and South America, I wanted to simulate flying into every airport that I flew into in those days. I started with a C-172, but since I like to fly in real time, I quickly moved up to faster aircraft, trying to stay with planes I am rated in, but I do jump up to an F-18 if I am covering the real long distances. What a blast!! Also, I was able to get my grandkids interested in flying, and they sit at the sim nearly every time they come over. Amazing how much and how quickly they have learned some of the basics.
Well said mate. The challenge is the fun. To do better each time we take to the skies
Great video!! For me flight simming is like an addiction but in a good way. My life wouldn't have been the same without it. It's pure happiness. Maybe now my friends will understand me ;-)
Thanks! :)
I would also add that the developments over the years has seen some amazing changes to become something quite realistic. I remember the first types of simulators in computers like the Sinclair ZX spectrum where there was basically a few lines for horizon, a long rectangle for an airstrip and a cross for an aeroplane, now we have some beautiful scenery and amazing addons like you say in your video :) Its a tremendous hobby that many do understand as over the years you can see the numbers in Flightsim shows, and subscribers to UA-cam accounts and Twitch. My wife doesnt fully understand and was semi embarrassed to tell work colleagues what my main hobby was and the reply was 'Hey my Dad does that too and another said my sister uses it as homework for real life studies to become a pilot. At the end of the day the true hammer blow to disbelievers is the fact that real life pilots use it too and enjoy being part of the development of simulators and addons for Aircraft.
Great video again and happy flying!
Thank you, Jonathan! :)
Genuine questions: what do you do during the longer flights? Doesn't it get boring once you're in the cruise for a couple of hours with very little to do?
I always feel like Im learning something new, and with that knowlege I build confidence for more complex flight plans. No "game" comes close to the feeling of accomplishment Flight Sim gives me.
Hi, I´m new to flight simulator. Well not even new.. i am planning to start flying 18th this month. So i´m looking for a yoke and throttle (Honeycomb seems pretty good)
But because this will be my first time ever playing a flight sim, I think buying a yoke and throttle seems a bit impulsive. Can i learn the most of in doing tutorials in de flight sim?
Or is there a website for noobs like me, where you can learn alot from?

It will take quite a bit of time to learn about everything. I started this hobby when I was 11 years old, at about 16 years old I started to really getting into it. You can check out the many videos on this channel, a lot of them have tips and tricks on how to learn things.

There is just something about mastering the plane you love. For me it started with A10c on DCS, i started with just my screen and a basic joystick, then Track IR and a Warthog Hotas. Now here i am nearly 10 years later in VR still flying that slowpoke A10c and loving every minute!
Loved the video! One thing people always ask is ‘are you actually at your computer watching the plane for the full 10 hours?!’ I’m like “no, I sleep” lol

I love planes. Currently playing DCS world, having a good time learning the Hornet and all its complicated systems, and just enjoying the sensation of flight. Feels so good when all the pieces of the puzzle come together after all the time out into learning the systems.
Thanks Due..This is good video. Good Job
very nice video for people who always ask me why are you ''playing'' on flight sim :)) Thank so much bro..
You're welcome! :)
Personal question. I have the use of only one hand. Would it be possible to use a joystick or would I find it too difficult? Give me hour honest opinion. You won't hurt my feelings. Thanx
I think you can! Taking the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro as an example, you would probably have to assign the throttle axis to some of the buttons on top of the joystick and use your thumb to control it. Unless you're very fast with your thumb and you can control the actual throttle axis.
Great video, thanks for that thoughts. It's just PASSION. And yes, I do have other hobbies, a good job and great family. Have a great time and always three green!

The pain of not being able to land after a 6hour flight is unimaginable. For a mobile flight simmer, it hits worse😭

That’s indeed a wonderful feature!
I don't fly flight sims myself, I'm more into race car sims. Some people like truck sims, bus sims, train sims even farming sims among many more. This type of gaming is seen as slightly separate from the general gaming community and invariably attracts negative comments like "nurd" or "geek". Most of these comments come from the FPS genre, I guess they see themselves as the "Cool Kids"...lol. I wonder if they have stopped to think that they are also simulating a real world activity in shooting people. Personally I don't like FPS games, I detest all the violence. But hey each to their own, as long as they don't bring it into the real world. I guess what I'm saying is, we should be able to respect and celebrate our differences rather than criticizing them.
Thanks for the vid! My friends always ask me why I ‘play’ flight sim and don’t play fortnite and CSGO with them.. imma just send them to this video.

It sure does!
hi: one time the ATC all went off line and all the pilots started to do out of control stuff like low flyby and crashing into the ground on purporse.
Thanks for the video! Flight Sim a great way to relax.
You're welcome!
As one of those “nerds” I relate, I have such a strong love for the mechanical world that I want to be surrounded by it even when I can’t. It’s why I have a few simulators ranging from No Limits 2 to Train Simulator to XP11. I’m passionate about all of these.
Each of those three have different places in my heart (albeit they are all connected as well). But seeing people say stuff about social life is something we all just gotta get over. Sure I might not go out as much as others (also due to my degree requiring so much time), but the connections I’ve made through these games and real life objects mean so much more.
Plus we’re having fun doing what we’re doing so who cares what other people think!
True that! :)
5:42 loved it 😂✈️💙
THIS is the channel I was looking for!!
RIP SKY KING.... you took this to the next level.
I'm thinking to buy a simulator, but my question is do I have to know every switch, button, parameters etc.... or is it possible to fly completely automatic and learn step by step?
If you want to fly with a plane, that us good if you know the buttons, switches. I also learned all that from the basics. If you like it, you'll learn it fast.
Hi ! Thanks for nice video to watch, i am 81 year old, and have work in the airline business as a aeronautical engineer, and have start since MS flightsimulator 2. long time ago hi hi.
And now is X-plane 11 the best available from my opinion, incredibel possibilitys with that Xp11 really.
But in my age its little harder to learn new simulators, but training very often on Cessna Skyhawk , will try to learn more on the B-737 Zibo mod in the future.
Keep up the good work Evert !!

Thanks for watching, Bertil!
In my younger years I always thought about becoming an airline pilot, but with math not being one of my favorite subjects, and being away from my home very often, since I wanted pets for companions, Flight Simulator was a great game for me. I also liked the fact that you could alter the game to your preferences, so instead of doing everything to start the plane and create flight plans, etc., I could just get in my favorite plane and fly it by hand to wherever I wanted to go. I have just downloaded FS2020 and I have been away from FS for several years, so it is going to take time to get back into it, and learn this new program.
Nicely explained. I had the dream but, due to health and other issues I couldn't train be a pilot. You're right when you say we do or, fly our flight sims and not play them. I have a yoke and throttle quadrant. Looking to expand. Been doing it for over 10 years. My wife even tells me to take a flight when I'm moody. She knows it relaxes me. Thanks for the video.
You're welcome!
As a real-life general aviation pilot with a commercial license and instrument rating, I've found flight simulators a valuable and enjoyable (and cheap!) way to do what I love. In 2004 I "flew" a high-performance Lancair IV-P around the world using Flight Simulator 2004. It was very realistic; the airplane responded quickly to control inputs and took a while to learn to fly. When I got back to my home base I "flew" a Cessna 172 and found it just as slow to respond -- and made the same sound -- as I remembered.
Thanks for watching! :)
When i started this hobby in 2010 thanks to my friend, i fell quickly in love because there was a lot to learn, but the progress was fast. And especially with regular GA flying with proper controllers, you do not get that feeling i got with car sims, that i am missing so much due to not feeling the car. This is also true with HC ww2 plane models in landing and take off etc ...
I've been using X-plane 11 for around a year now, and quite enjoy flying the Zibo-Mod 737-800, the ASK-21 glider (very relaxing!), and occasionally GA planes. I feel as if I have learned quite a lot regarding procedures, systems, aerodynamics and even geography.
I initially started off using GeoFS (a flight simulator on top of Google Earth). This free online sim, while very unrealistic and limited, is something I would have loved to have around 20 years ago when I was in high school. A chance to learn geography and a bit of physics, all while playing.
As always, thanks for the cool videos!
You’re welcome, Felipe!
It’s not as great a feeling as actually being up there looking down at this beautiful planet and in control, but it does give one a part of this experience. A person can hone their skills to some degree and try new things that might not be safe in an airplane. Besides it can be quite inexpensive allowing the person more money for the real thing. I’m an Instrument and Commercial rated Pilot who also loves Aerobatics all of which I love. I feel very sorry for people that have not experienced the thrill of flight but they can experience a part of it with a flight simulator.
True! :)
YES, YES!!! Thank you!
I've been flying MSF and now Prepar3D since I arrived to USA from México back in 1998, and I hated when friends and family always called my Sim a "game" :l
they don't know.
You're welcome! :D
Glider pilot here, using Condor2 + VR for keeping proficiency up during winter. Never thought a flight sim can provide stick & rudder feel to such an extent that it is sufficient to substitute reality, but that thing does.
Thanks for watching!
I am a Captain for a major US airline, currently flying the Airbus A-320. My Dad was a pilot, and so I suppose I inherited my love of flying from him. I started learning to fly at age 12. I could legally fly an airplane by myself before I could drive a car by myself. I. LOVE. AVIATION! I fly X-Plane, FSX, and DCS. I use an Airbus A-320 plug-in for X-Plane to keep sharp on emergency procedures and rarely done procedures. In years past, we pilots would “chair fly” to keep sharp on these things, running through the procedures while sitting in a chair and moving our hands over imaginary controls. Well, I now have a high fidelity sim with VR and so I guess it’s “chair flying” on steroids! A great tool for a real pilot to stay sharp. BTW, I have been an airline pilot for 29 years, and yes I am an AVGEEK! Guilty as charged! I too play music, shoot guns, enjoy grilling food, and I enjoy studying cutting edge physics, history.....yeah, I love learning all kinds of new things! I was never in the military, so DCS gives me a chance to scratch the air combat itch and get a small taste of what that would be like.
You hit the nail on the head my friend. We just love airplanes, and all things aviation. I don’t expect most people to understand. Subscribed to your channel! Keep up the good work, and all the best to you in your aviation endeavors!
Thank you! :)
I started flight simming 2 years ago, because my 3 year old son got interested in airplanes so I downloaded the X-Plane 11 Demo and got stuck. I now have over 1000 hours in X-Plane and 178 in FSX. When I started I knew nothing, I just wanted to see if I could get a Cessna off the ground.
