So now Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust is a must.
indeed
I was about to request this. Amazing film
I'm gonna put one in for Wizards, Heavy Traffic, Shame of the Jungle and Heavy metal.
Well, I'm for seeing these two tackle Shogun Assassin (1980), .. . the flick that Tarantino imitated with that Kill Bill crap.
Yes this one is a must, but please let it be in English. Vampire hunter D bloodlust was originally made for english and shown first in the US. The Japanese voiced version is technically the dub. Anyone who didn't see the english version is missing out.
Ahh…90’s anime was so ultra violent…I miss those days
me too
I'm shocked they watched this.
It’s just all gratuitous chop suey for teens or teen brained adults. Just because it may have inspired the Matrix, doesn’t mean it is the Matrix
Definitely. 80s anime was crazy violent too.
@@jmarx3943 compared to the crap we get now indeed
if this was voted for you have a great audience!
8 Devils:
-Rock Guy
-Snake Girl
-Shadow Guy
-Wasp Guy
-Immortal Guy
-Lightning Thread Guy
-Gun Powder Girl
-Blind Guy
if you watch the movie Electra from 2005, it rips off the 8 Devils of Kimon from Ninja Scroll. 🙂
This is an iconic animation. Some scenes can be off-putting for those casual viewers, but it's definitely a classic imo.
Ninja Scroll is right up there with Akira and Ghost in The Shell. Another masterpiece of story telling from Japan. The American Dub acting by Mange Entertainment was way better in the 90's that the localized Funimation Anime dubs that came after.
The old guy is like a CIA spy working for the govt. (Tokugawa Shogunate, which means this is after Shogun, the TV show because that formed the Tokugawa Shogunate), and he essentially hired CLint Eastwood (Jubei) to thwart the Dark Shogunate from getting the gold, which would have given them resources for a rebellion.
I forget how the villain becomes essentially immortal
Yea Shogun is Sengoku period, and Ninja Scroll is Edo Era right?
In college we were made to watch this movie (mainly the first 15 minutes) as a form of "hazing" for the freshman team. Watch the whole movie once, and realize it's historic, and more than just gratuitous violence and sex.
And then its time for "GENOCYBER" and "WICKED CITY", "FIST OF THE NORTH STAR"...that was my childhood...looking forward to your reaction of this iconic Gore-Flic. Series reccomendation: SAMURAI CHAMPLOO
wicked city is my fav out of the ones you have listed
Just picked up fist of the North Star and fatal fury the motion picture on Blu Ray
Wicked City is a classic but brutal.
@@KonohazFinest cool
3X3 eyes, violence jack and Devil man were also classics of that era.... Oh and battle angel alita with black magic m66... Rozen Z is a classic that I suddenly just remembered for some reason.
15:34 this is after Shōgun (which starts the Tokugawa/Edo Period); this takes place at some point in the like 200 years after it
One of the masterpieces of the 90s. Beautiful, violent, creative, just what art should be.
I remember watching this when I was either 8 or 9 years old with my older brother. Good times, what a classic.
Found this puppy on vhs when I was young, caught the dub on sci fi ani-monday. The vhs is the Japanese dub
A certified classic.
Being a Gen Xer i remember going to blockbuster video and renting Fist of the north Star for the first time and getting a real good idea of what Japanese anime is. Thankfully it began my love and obsession with anime 💕😍😍. I can recommend some other movies like Demon City Shinjuku, Vampire Hunter D and it's sequel Bloodlust, Wicked City, Golgo 13 and Fatal Fury the motion picture.
Golgo 13 is sick as hell.
The Guyver anime is pretty decent too
Fellow Gen X here... I remember any VHS I got from Manga Entertainment would have a trailer for Fist of North Star, and the overdub was like:
_Enter a world where violence isn't a problem, it's the solution! Fists fly! Heads explode! Never before have so many been killed so quickly by one man!_
Someone else who watched the Fatal Fury movie.
There's piles of great Anime that's not porny.
Can you guys do a Lupin the 3rd movie?
Castle of Cagliostro is my favorite.
Black Magic M66..Metalskin Panic: Madox 01. Fist of the NorthStar...
Spirited away, the cat returns, howls moving castle. What a lot of casual viewers don't realize is anime isn't a genre its a medium and one that has content for kids, adults, men and women as well as actual porno's.
Even here, sorry but it serves a purpse, never found the sex here arousing, it just shows how everyone is using kagero, even the scene where the chamberlain is having sex with that concubine, you caj see kagero's frustration with many things, that woman being ised, her not being able to love normqlly, it shows how the chamberlaij is so stoic and kinda douchey, etc, there are far more porny anime out there, just cause the movie industry produces porn doesn't mean we don't watch great movies, or that greta movies don't have sex scenes that serve a purpose.
I remember first watching this movie at 1am on Teletoon. Blew my teenage mind.
For anyone who enjoys this movie, I highly recommend the series Basilisk. About two rival ninja clans that are pressed go to war with each other by the Shogun Tokugawa, while the son and daughter of the two clan elders are betrothed. It's basically Ninja Scroll with a bit of Romeo and Juliet thrown in.
No actual basilisks appear in the series, although two or three of the ninja make their powers work by others looking into their their eyes.
"Cumrades" and "2 finger salute" classic lines tonight
Man, this is one of my go-to Anime movies! You should also check out this director's earlier film, Wicked City! Also, Vampire Hunter D (and its sequel) and Perfect Blue are definitely worth the watch.
For some more old-school goodness, there's also the original Dirty Pair OVAs, "The Nolandia Affair" and "Project Eden"
Love the old school anime, this one is a classic
"Anime is porn."
Can someone request Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle or Kiki's Delivery Service? By only requesting adult anime it's giving her the impression that anime isn't like movies in that they are made for all sorts of ages and not just adults.
A lot of movies they watch have bewbs, and they didn't call it porn.
You forgot Ponyo.
A non Ghibli Anime movie I'd recommend is "A Silent Voice" (aka The Shape of Voice) but it might be too real.
@@innerguardianXIIIthey already did a silent voice.
Nice list. Sounds like a bunch of repurposed anime for the American masses
Nausica of The Valley of The Wind
What I love about this movie is that Jubei is unable to beat any of the other ninja without assistance (largely from Kagero), excepting maybe Shijima. When he finally faces Gemma, it's just him, and Gemma is leagues ahead of him in ability. It makes the final confrontation that much more awesome.
15:39 The crowd clap when the little girl walked in was funny. Made my day! Subbed today!
I have said it before, but I will do it again. Try one of the greatest anime ever made, Super Dimensional Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? (Sub) All you need to do is watch the first 3 episodes of the tv show (about 20 min log for each) to get the basics of characters and world. It rivaled Star Wars in Japan. Both of you guys would highly enjoy it.
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust or Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade would be my next suggestions.
The name of the movie is 獣兵衛忍風帖, Jubei Ninpuucho. The first 3 characters are just Jubei's name, while the last 3 are the kanji for "ninja", "wind", and "book". I saw it before it got adapted (rapidly) for US release, and the title was translated as something like "Jubei, the Wind Ninja Chronicles" or was shortened to just Jubei Ninja Chronicles (though all of which I thought were better than "Ninja Scroll"). I guess his swordfighting technique of using his katana's blade to channel air so fast, he can cut things well out of range is what makes him a "wind ninja".
love that yall chose this one, was my first real intro to anime
This movie got me heavily into anime. This has the best opening scene to ANY movie, anime or real life ever.
-47:38 When he SA'd the female ninja, he took poison into his body. That weakened his shell, from the inside....
So many ninjas.
Where do they get them all?
Ninjas-R-Us, obviously.
Spiderman is too scary.
Go watch Bambi getting shot in the face.
You mean Bambi's mother. Who dies offscreen.
Maybe she found Watership Down if she was after bunny movies 😅
lmfao, you might not how you were reacting that day for this movie, but I loved it. lol. The awkwardness just made it golden. lmfao at Mr. Movies @ Mr. Movies getting fresh with Mrs. Movies. lol. My favorite couple's reactors
34:04-34:22 : and this is why Mr. & Mrs. Movies are married lmao 😂
The female ninja is introduced as a poison taster for her lord. Must be something different from the usual meaning, since the whole point is that the taster would show symptoms of poisoning if the food had been tainted. Wouldn't even work as an assasination technique. If the lord dies from poisoning, the food taster is killed since they either didn't do their job properly or they were complicit in the poisoning.
Mr. Movies, I love that shirt. Only better would be black with a white scorpion
I found out about this movie because a friend brought me a vhs copy from Japan. I had no idea what anyone was saying but my friends and I MST3K’d it until about 5 years later when it finally came out in the USA. One of my favorites!
So happy to see y’all watching Ninja Scroll!!picked this vhs up at a First Monday(trade-days/swap-meet)when I was a kid. The one season series is really good too!
Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust, Wicked City, Perfect Blue and Goku Midnight Eye are all worth watch!
"i wanna watch one with a bunny"
my mind immediatly goes to WATERSHIP DOWN :D
I think I recommended this here a long time ago and now it's here ! Saw this on VHS back in the day 😎
I think the matrix influence was in the ninjitsu and the old man's ninja scroll being "exactly as he wrote it" is kind of like the architect and the one
The majority of anime is for Japanese kids so not at all porny. Then there’s a chunk of anime for teenagers and the stuff for teenage guys will have the combo of violent and/or lewd themes. Back in the 80s/90’s they thought that would be the main demographic iJapanese anime would appeal to amongst western audiences so that was the most common sort of anime to travel to the west, along with giant robots like Transformers, piloted robots like Robotech & Gundam , Pokemon and power ranger type shows. For a long time anime was thought to only be for 8-18 year old boys but in Japan there’s anime for every demographic, any age, any gender etc.
There's an excellent OVA called "Kai Doh Maru" (2001) which is a retelling of Heian-era folklore into a story of political intrigue. Much of it is desaturated except for small patches of scenes. so everything appears done in pastels except blood (among other things), it makes the fight scenes interesting.
I discovered this movie in 99, thanks to Teletoon and Macross Plus the next year.
my favorite move during my high school! Still got this on VHS, I just can’t found a VCR to play it😕
Guys check out a crazy true story, American Made: Tom Cruise was awesome in it and he actually flew the planes too. The guy who played Escobar was great as well.
That movie isn't a true story, it's a coverup of what was really going on.
Classic
😂😂😂 I never thought you guys would watch this movie. I've owned this movie for over 20 years now
This and the original Voltron were my introductions to anime.
aahahah original voltron you say?
Speed Racer, Battle of the Planets aka G-Force aka Ninja Science Team Gatchaman for me.
@@icoborg aye with that proper badass anime art style
Holy shit! Dude I love this movie. Think it may have been the first anime movie I ever watched. Still one of my faves. The animation, the violence, the naughty 😩. Hope someone picks sword of the stranger one day. My favorite anime movie of all time
EDIT: ehh don’t think I ever watched it dubbed. Not my fave
Forgotten movie with a bunny. THE ADVENTURES OF THE AMERICAN RABBIT!!!!!!!!!!! Animated... I loved that movie as a kid.
Been loving you all for awhile now, but yelling me y'all still VHS?! Whole new level! 😂
If you haven't yet; ghost in the shell 1 & 2! (original manga) followed by the film.
KARAS 1 and 2 is absolutely Amazing and a must see. Kinda hard to find. Ninja scrolls is definitely one of my favorite Anime of all time. 😎💯👍🤝
OMG someone is finally watching Ninja Scroll!!!
I love this movie. I don't think the missus will enjoy it too much though.
This is one of those classic 90s animes. I would also recommend Demon City Shinjuku, Wicked City, Dominion Tank Police.
One of the few anime that I prefer the English dub, the English voice actors actually gave it some effort.
is you're of a certain age, it's a good chance this was the first anime you ever saw, saw this a couple years after it came out, on cable, when Canada got a Sci-Fi Station, Space, The Imagination Station, played this movie and a few anime movies and series, some during the day, but this was usually at night, or on the weekend (back when channels like that started, they only had a few offerings, so they would play them alot)...i miss those days, almost anything is available now (provided it isn't locked in a particular streaming service), but back then they would put just about anything on, they just needed content....so i saw this movie alot, and yes, i was probably too young, but that was just watching movies in the 80s and 90s, if you could find it, you saw it
I know I don't mind my anime dubbed, but any live action must be subtitled. It just makes since to me. The only anime Dub that I truly despise is one character in Princess Mononoke voiced by Billy Bob Thorton. His voice does not match the character in any way.
Don’t worry about those ranting about the purity of subtitles. That’s just an attempt to feel superior. The important thing is to find a version with subtitles or dubbing which actually translates the content, instead of someone’s hobbyhorse.
I had this, Ghost in The Shell, Macross Plus The Movie, Fatal Fury 1 & 2, and Battle Angel recorded on an old school blank VHS tape back when I was 12.
This was a staple of viewing on "Space the imagination station".
She's so cute! The clapping was funny
"My best hat!"
The Ninja Scroll dub is worth it just for Jubei. He's got some great line drops.
The 90s were a wild time for dubs. Some are pure gold and others are atrocious.
The Japanese title that appears at the beginning does not mean "Ninja Scroll"! It means "Jubei Ninpuchou"!
Hell yes rockin the WCW Nitro shirt! The wrong company won the Monday Night War!
I think it’s like an Asian movie thing from the 70s and 80s, and this film is a bit inspired by those, like the Bruce lee film where he invaded the samurai school, there’s a bit in that where that woman lays that egg
If they put any effort in the English dub, I usually watch it. If it's low effort or annoying, I'll switch over to JPN voice. In the days of VHS, you had to choose in advance which version to buy/rent, but with discs and now multiple audio channels on streaming, everyone can have what they like so there's no reason to fight about it. I often will listen to the Dub while reading the Sub Subtitles to get the best of both worlds.
Classic!!!
one of my fav anime of all time so glad to see a reaction to it.
Was this the correct aspect ratio for the movie? I remember it being different but then again I have only ever seen it subbed not dubbed.
edit: The missus wasn't very into the movie but I'm glad Mr Movies enjoyed it. It's definitely shocking on a first viewing especially if you haven't seen many ultra violent animes. Still it's a seminal piece of animation and the director Kawajiri Yoshiaki has an iconic artstyle that is prevalent in many of his works. Lanky but muscular characters, quick cuts during action scenes, gratuitous violence and a little bit of nipple action, dark colours (blue in his early works specifically) etc.
An interesting watch would be his swan song Highlander the Search for Vengeance. The pacing is a bit all over the place and the animation quality does not hold up to his other works like Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust, but I think you'd like it since the narrative is a lot more closer to Hollywood movies and it's part of the Highlander franchise (which you have reacted to).
Weird you mention Highlander: The Search For Vengeance. I considered it back when they did highlander and unfortunately its only on DVD. I wasn't able to find an HD version. I thought it was a decent flick. Not mindblowing, but a solid highlander story that was better than many of the sequels. I just wished they actually used a Queen song somewhere.
@@rainingmadness129 Yea a Queen song would have been a great callback to the original. There was a pretty awesome guitar solo in the movie though, the one which plays during the title sequence, right after the amazing quickening scene.
Why is she always so confused? The plot is not that complicated
I remember watching this late at night with my older sister when I was 11. I had no idea what was going on but I thought it was awesome.
Favorite demon was the shadow guy, that's such a dope and versatile ability to have. This was mindblowing when it came out back in the day, and still holds up but I can see it being a turn off with the nudity. Like Mr. said, not all anime are like that. If the Mrs. wants a great anime with zero nudity, Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood is the way to go, it's a series though.
Clearly she doesn’t know how anime works haha. You just have to accept it for how it is. They’re ninjas with supernatural and super human abilities
My dad got this for him and I on whim, hoping to kinda bond over my love of anime as a kid.
I was 6.....
Hope you two are having an great and awesome day ❤
Oh well. At least Mrs. Movies got her nails good and clean during this movie..
recommend samurai reincarnation (1981) very similair to this film just in live action with same main character , great fights and practical sets and effects
I remember renting this from blockbuster in like second grade. I loved ninja stuff. My parents walked in during the rock monster rape scene. They weren't happy and I was kind of traumatized. I still have finished watching it lol.
Definitely recommend Afro Samurai if you guys haven't seen it Samuel L Jackson does the voice
There's an old Japanese figure of speech borrowed from Chinese to "use poison to neutralize poison". This movie plays literally, but it's more a figure of speech meaning "fight fire with fire".
So it's similar to "evil against evil" where
So it's similar to "evil against evil like putting gargoyles on a cathedral to ward of other evil spirits
@@2apocalypsex Homeopathy which 'doesn't' work by basically the same principle of treating like-with-like.
It's a nice idea in fantasy films and in reality it is admittedly not entirely without merit such as inoculation for example, but various quackery and alt medicines like Homeopathy use this idea to sell you snake oil.
11:40 The guy look like Beamcaster from Power Rangers.
24:35 - 24:44 Now I see where Hideo Kojima got his inspiration for The Pain (MGS3)
Hell yeah man, love the Monday Nitro shirt.
Should watch Cowboy Bebop, a classic anime and one of the greatest shows period.
33:37 lol that good timing lol hahahah and 34:07 lol hahahaha that good one too lmao
Got a little survey for Mr. Movies. On Monday nights, were you there to see Dubby-See-Dubby? Or the good guys? I myself was not the for the "good guys," as the bad guy, Scott Hall, would say. I was all about Sting and DDP. Who were you there for?
Awesome reaction of my favorite movie!!!!!!😊😊😊😊😊😊
I DID NOT EXPECT THIS SHIT!!!! I’m so god damn hype to watch this reaction. This is my FAVORITE anime film!!! Oh I’m ready!!

Love y’all chemistry watching this movie
Actually there was a show before this that is a little similar to this movie, it was called V (1984)
Did you guys do the April Live already? Did I miss it?
Love this movie. Series was good for what it was
Quick. Someone request Akira or Grave of the Fireflies. Let's get someone to cry.
The Mrs. might like Trigun, an anime series.
