I feel like what makes the characters so complex is how all of them, D, Leila, Mier Link, etc, were all prisoners of who they are. Mier is a prisoner of his own bloodlust, Leila is a prisoner of her own grief, and D is a prisoner of his kind. He's forsaken as a vampire and by his own kind, being a hunter. Mier and Leila choosing to walk away from who they feel like they were destined to be forever is powerful stuff.
Love this movie. Based on the 4th book, Demon Death Chase. I first saw this one in the theater. A bunch of us went down to Boston to see it, all dressed up in various cosplay. I put together a Vash the Stampede outfit.
Tale of The Dead Town is number 4 Deathchase is 3 in the series but yeah it’s funny cause the movie feels more akin to the later book plots in terms of pacing despite it having book 3’s plot
This is my favorite animated movie of all time. Both Western and Eastern. It is a masterpiece that touched me deeply. Charlotte and Meier Link are one of all my time fav fictional couples of time.
I love the universe of vampire hunter d, the film is a work of art, they changed many things from the book to suit the film, but the essence is the same, in the books we can understand more about d and how he thinks, in the books there is more scenes that are very heavy and show things crudely, I hope more people know about it D through your video, kisses from Brasil s2
"one of the films I can watch over and over again". Yup, I've been rewatching this over and over again as well. The animation is still excellent, the flow of the story is perfect and the dubbing is so good as well. The characters are well written especially for the pan of the film. The part where they use Grove as their "secret weapon" is my favorite 😄
So to summarize. The Dracula of VHD is different from Bram Stoker's. The Sacred Ancestor, this version of Dracula, predates humanity. Once humanity appeared on Earth he decided to make it so the Nobles, aka Vampires, went into the shadows. For thousands of years they observed humanity until a nuclear war that was dubbed The Holocaust in which....well, human society ended fucked. The Vampires had seized all the resources needed for humanity to reconstruc society, and humanity, after hundreds of years, was reduced back to tribalistic societies. Once that happened the Nobles and Sacred Ancestor swooped in and took control.
You are correct that he predated Humanity as a Fallen Angel (or possibly later a Nephilim mentioned in the Book of Genesis) but, he still filled the role of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” canonically, as he lied about his ancestry in order to blend into his respective Transylvanian society. He had the power to assume the form of a wolf, a horde of rats, or a bat (even his own coachman and gatekeeper and the damn fog), he was a master shape-shifter, and it goes without saying that he also assumed the role of his own father and he before him all the way back to the beginning. Remember in the novel, it was mentioned that he never married nor had any interest in the fairer sex (until eventually meeting Mina the Fair) that was…
I remember my brother having me watch this in theaters back in '00 when I was in the 6th grade. I was absolutely stunned and have been a huge fan of Vampire Hunter D ever since! It's one of my ultimate all time favorite movies and it makes me so happy seeing someone else enjoy it as well. Wonderful video!
Yeah, this is one of those you can watch over and over again. Watching your reaction to this is like probably my 10th time watching it again and still I enjoy it.
D is an amalgamation of western, science fiction, horror and Lovecraftian horror, dark fantasy, folklore and occult science taking place in the year 12,090 AD After a nuclear holocaust in like the 1990's or so dubbed as the Nuclear war of which reset human civilization and after 300 years humans reverted back to a more middle/dark ages society and it was then that the Vampires of old mythology long forgotten emerge from their coffins and crypts seemingly predicting the self assured destruction of humanity and using it as their chance to take the reigns of this new world armed with the technology the babes of a new human race had long forgotten The Vampires enter this new Dark Future as "The Nobility" which is what they're reffered to in the books developing and highly advance technological society eventually though around 5000 years into their rule they began to show signs of decline. Now Nobles stll exst but in much fewer numbers but they're touch on the earth shows as with their advanced science and technology they recreated mythological monsters like werewolves, dragons, and even developed other chimera's and beastiaries to terrorize the peasentry humans the likes of which infest the frontier and the villages that dot the frontier which are split into sectors D by the way is rumored to be around 10,000 years old
The world that Hideyuki Kikuchi build with the Vampire Hunter D universe is one of my favorite si-fi universes that exists the unique genre mashup is genius and the crazy stuff that happen there like the vampire war vs aliens or the story and ambiguity regarding the Sacred Ancestor (that is heavily implied but never outright stated to be D's father) and the downfall of the vampire civilization just to name a few. The only gripe I got with Kikuchi's light novels is that his actual writing is atrocious. The characters are mostly horribly written (especially his women characters) and the stories never properly end or are structured so weirdly that reading them is just headache inducing. I stopped in the middle of Volume 13 because after all theses novels the stark realization hit me that Kikuchi will not improve, that this is his "style" of writing and as much as I love the world of D that was when I was done.
@@g0dhand310 I’ve heard a lot of critics about Kikuchi’s prose and I agree it can be a bit superfluous in its over-elegance. I think as an author, he works well within sizeable novel-length stories. I remember the stretch of novels that were split up into parts were very long and just action-dense and felt padded as stories. The man is a very prolific writer; he writes multiple books yearly, and you get a sense that he’s constantly generating ideas for stories and adding them in without thinking about the overall structure or pace of the story. That's why simpler, straightforward D stories that are consolidated into single novels have been my favorites in the series. Even multiple-part stories like Pale Fallen Angel or Mysterious Journey to the North Sea can feel stretched of a good idea, so stuff like Raiser of Gales, Tale of the Dead Town, or Pilgrimage of the Sacred and Profane are amongst my favorites in the series. As for the female characters, my one criticism was in volume 3 where I feel like Leila’s arc of “getting married” sounded strange. In book 3, Leila is raped by her brothers and made into a cold killer, but in helping D at his weakest and protecting him, she finds a redemption from the cutthroat world of a hunter that she felt binded to it's like her soul returns something that went away when Grove mounted her after all her brothers. It doesn’t really make sense for the end of her arc to be “now that the Markus clan are dead,” I’m gonna go marry that dude from a couple towns back. Not to mention D’s attitude about women shouldn’t be Hunters is strange, considering Doris from book 1 is a badass, and there are tons of dangerous female warriors in the universe. Otherwise, I don’t have much of a problem with Kikuchi’s female characters. If this is about a lot of the rape in these books, I don’t think it’s out of place in the setting, and it’s always depicted as really vile and evil, which is apt. Iriya the Berserker, Granny Viper, Tae, Doris, Miska, Lina, and Elena are all pretty good female characters for me. Not all of them really fall into Damsel roles; some of them are quite adept and skilled. Some of them are quite archetypal like the bullheaded girls Kikuchi likes to write about. That being said, my main problem with some of the novels is the gross amount of action that takes priority. I get it’s an action series, but I always preferred the adventure or lore and ancillary characters that tag along for the ride rather than D facing opponents he’ll obviously cut down. Kikuchi goes out of his way to build opponents up for D just to show off D’s strength, and it’s not that compelling when I’m not quite attached to the villain, and simply making him impossibly strong is not enough for me. The stuff I like about D is the mystery and the characters that accompany D, learning about the world and the history across a fractured frontier amidst the twilight of a declining race, and D’s place being in neither, making him suitable for being a lens to view the best and worst of both sides of this conflict.
Honestly, what absolutely hooked me with this film was the art direction. Being inspired by the work of Yoshitaka Amano, the illustrator for the books, I reckon that's what makes this film visually stunning. Also made me incredibly happy as a fan of his art, especially for Final Fantasy LOL
"I feel bad for grove" ...should I break her innocence over what the 3 bros are actually like in the book and how they got their abilities or strengths?
Rip the band aid off…they were rapists. They all took turns with Leila in the novel, and have NO redeeming value whatsoever. Even killing fellow hunters in order to make sure they were the only business in town so to speak.
It was a joy to watch you watch this movie for the first time. I saw it first when it originally came out so this was like a nostalgia trip for me. Thank you for that.
Minor Nitpicking of the film is that one of the big lore points is how due to a nuclear war that wipes out most humans regressing them to medieval society they’ve forgotten how to deal with Vampires and after Vampires took over they also attempted to psychologically suppress any knowledge forcefully It’s one of the reasons why Vampire Hunters are extremely cutthroat warriors cause the normal safeguards against Vampires have been buried by time and oppression So the fact that there are crosses is kinda weird
この作品は私が最も好きなアニメ映画のうちの一つです。どの場面も作画に重みがあり絵画のようで美しく、OSTも雰囲気があり素晴らしい。 This is one of my favorite anime movie. Each scene has a weight in the drawing and is beautiful like a painting, and the OST is also amazing.
One of the best anime films ever indeed. I watched many times, the end show us how is the life of an eternal being, I love the face of the child, because she looks like his grandma when was child but the difference is she's happy far from the tragedy of his grandma's childhood, and probably D going to see it grow as well.
Manga is darker for example what brothers did to Leila really make you happy each of them die and she got some happy ending, but both manga and movie are epic.
This shows the difference between a production being designed as a movie from the outset and one being converted into a movie. The original Vampire Hunter D production should have stayed as a two-parter like it was intended, it wouldn't have felt so disjointed if they had put in the parts they had to leave out for the new run time. This was such a great movie, it's a shame many have never had it on their radar, it's especially great to watch at this time of the year. Also, I recommend the Highlander anime!
I came across Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust sometime in the early 2Ks. It was towards the tail end of my weebo phase and while I was still into anime, I was starting to outgrow it. I forgot what motivated me to see it -- I was familiar with the original Vampire Hunter D but wasn't super impressed with it. But Bloodlust blew me away. I own the VHS - one of the last VHS tapes I ever bought and shared it with as many friends as I could. I consider Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust as one of the best vampire stories I've ever seen, anime or live action. It definitely doesn't get enough love by reactors, so I am glad you have decided to see it. Other anime that hits in the feels in a similar way to this: if you haven't seen Spirited Away, go watch that - it is a masterpiece. I also recommend Tenchi Muyo in Love. I'm not a big fan of the series (shonen is not my thing) but there's something bittersweet and poignant about the story to that movie that gets me. You just have to get past the silly moments and some of the inside jokes.
Thankyou for an honest reaction. Pretty hard to find people that can actually feel empathy for the loss of other people, much less the idea of other people.
If you really liked this animation style, you should check out Ninja Scroll. Another classic anime and you can see how Vampire Hunter D shaped up to be like this.
So some story clarification. D is the son of Dracula and a mortal woman who Dracula actually loved. It's implied that Dracula knew that Vampires couldn't be dominating forever and that coexisting with humans was the true future, but the other nobles didn't accept his ways and as the years went on, even outright twisted his will. The story of this countess shows one such noble who was so obsessed with her bloodlust that Dracula himself murdered her out of sheer disgust over her disregard for human lives. D is implied to either have had training from hell or even had genetic manipulation at a young age to become as powerful as he is and he harbors intense hatred for Dracula and his travels have a passive overarching mission to try and find him.
Wonderful movie, having wonderful, the final made me have shed tear when Meier and Charlotte were finally in that ship heaving for the stars, even as a man, incredibly perfect for having a Halloween party....
I got the impression that Kyle at least was trying to get his filthy hands on Leila. Does the manga confirm that the others were doing so as well? And that they were succeeding?
As I understand it, Mier loved Charlett for her humanity, and turning her into a vampire would have destroyed that. I like to think that her spirit lived on after her body died and was able to go with him to the stars where they found peace together. D hadn't been contracted to kill Mier, only to either get Charlett back or make sure she was dead. He must have noticed her ring bouncing along the floor and decided he had no quarrel with Mier, so he let him leave with her body. It is sad how Grove died, but I think he would have been happy to know Leila had found peace, had a family and that there were people to place flowers on her grave.
The muzzle in Mashira’s, the werewolf’s, stomach is a symbolic organism from a species called countenanced carbuncle. It’s the same species as D’s left hand. Vlad Dracula III Tepes was the basis for Count Dracula. The historical figure died in the late 15th century and the book by Bram Stoker was from the late 19th century. This series takes play over 10 millennia in the future from us, but Vlad Tepes is the Vampire King in here. I loved this movie but then red the novel and has a hard time getting into the series again because it was so messed up. Like in here Layla is not related to the Marcus brothers but in the novel she is their biological sister and they regularly SA her. 🤢 I could not stay away forever. He’s one of my favorite characters.
This is one of the most beautifully animated timeless classics from my childhood. Enjoy and look up the making of it. Oh and about "Grove".......look up the literature and you'll change your mind about him 😂
Vampire Hunter D is awesome the original had a special place in my heart but bloodlust, with the better, condensed story, the beautiful art and animation style of Yoshiaki Kawajiri is just perfect. I miss his style of anime SO much. Amazing reaction, subbed instantly 💜
this is a different time i think for D (he can become thousands of years old, so this may be a couple hundreds or thousands of years in the future or past (feels future but i'm not sure it is).
I have been waiting for this reaction since the first one came out and oh boy do I like this movie! Probably my favorite anime movie of all and it is so nice to see you enjoy it aswell. The artstyle is so much better here and oh gosh this is just the best! Nice reaction!
You don't wanna know what these "caring" brothers were doing to Leyla in the novel/manga :0 Also, she has long hair in the manga. Manga drawing style looks even more beautiful, so you might take a look :3
Bloodlust is an instance where I believe the adaptation is better than the source material. The third Vampire Hunter D novel, "Demon Deathchase", is much, MUCH darker and tragic than the film: Leila's story is more gut-wrenching because the Marcus brothers are absolute scum (involving her in a history of SA, including Groveck), Carmilla doesn't exist in the book and the spaceship Meyerling and the Daughter are seeking is just a broken down ruin that can't fly, and Borgoff ends up killing Meyer as he dies after which the Daughter takes her own life in grief (a much more Romeo & Juliet type of ending). All in all, Bloodlust is less oppressive of a story and even with a similarly tragic ending it feels more romantic and less of a downer overall. P.S. The bit with the Barbarois Elder hitting on D is actually something of an established fact in this world. D is supposedly such a beautiful creature that everyone (yes, EVERYONE) is enamored with him to some extent. P.P.S. Also, I'm sorry to have to tell you that D's bad luck with horses is something of a running gag in the series, always losing them in one way or another. Heck, one of the books even starts with D carrying his saddle in the middle of nowhere because he's lost it before the story even begins.
You have a good time that almost a year right in which you sent this really incredibly joyful video in a real way for another anime from 2001 an ova animated film really perfect, my f Favorite of the story genre... And I don't know why but you remind me of a mix of Leila and Charlotte, it's my opinion, the hair, the face, everything, congratulations
I love the movie, and I read the book (3rd volume) and the story there for the girls is far less... good... which explains their affection towards the cold but fair blood consumers... I recommend reading the books.
Actually i think Charlotte did survive because the spaceship only preserved her wounds, and even if she did die, Meier actually turned her into a vampire, so she must be alive but not as a human.😅
The ending is bittersweet but seeing D smile at the little girl and glad that Leila has people caring and coming to her funeral is really beautiful. Way better than the 1985 version and one of the best vampire anime I’ve seen.

@@brucewayne2558 the first Book at least in terms of the English translation release came out in 2005 the original Japanese release came out in the 80’s though
Mier and Leila choosing to walk away from who they feel like they were destined to be forever is powerful stuff.
when the old man helps D with the horse. loyalty and trust can get you far in this world .
3rd book
This is my favorite animated movie of all time. Both Western and Eastern. It is a masterpiece that touched me deeply. Charlotte and Meier Link are one of all my time fav fictional couples of time.
same.. i would include Redline aswell..masterpieces.
Remember in the novel, it was mentioned that he never married nor had any interest in the fairer sex (until eventually meeting Mina the Fair) that was…
The animation studio, I believe, is Madhouse. They're known for their insane quality.
The secret behind the succes of the anime is because it originally was a novel. This is why the script of Bloodlust is so rich.
Still don't know why is was called Bloodlust instead of Demon Death Chase.
Yeah, this is one of those you can watch over and over again. Watching your reaction to this is like probably my 10th time watching it again and still I enjoy it.
D is an amalgamation of western, science fiction, horror and Lovecraftian horror, dark fantasy, folklore and occult science
taking place in the year 12,090 AD
After a nuclear holocaust in like the 1990's or so dubbed as the Nuclear war of which reset human civilization and after 300 years humans reverted back to a more middle/dark ages society and it was then that the Vampires of old mythology long forgotten emerge from their coffins and crypts seemingly predicting the self assured destruction of humanity and using it as their chance to take the reigns of this new world armed with the technology the babes of a new human race had long forgotten
The Vampires enter this new Dark Future as "The Nobility" which is what they're reffered to in the books developing and highly advance technological society eventually though around 5000 years into their rule they began to show signs of decline.
Now Nobles stll exst but in much fewer numbers but they're touch on the earth shows as with their advanced science and technology they recreated mythological monsters like werewolves, dragons, and even developed other chimera's and beastiaries to terrorize the peasentry humans the likes of which infest the frontier and the villages that dot the frontier which are split into sectors
D by the way is rumored to be around 10,000 years old
The world that Hideyuki Kikuchi build with the Vampire Hunter D universe is one of my favorite si-fi universes that exists the unique genre mashup is genius and the crazy stuff that happen there like the vampire war vs aliens or the story and ambiguity regarding the Sacred Ancestor (that is heavily implied but never outright stated to be D's father) and the downfall of the vampire civilization just to name a few.
@@g0dhand310
I’ve heard a lot of critics about Kikuchi’s prose and I agree it can be a bit superfluous in its over-elegance.
I also cry, falling into lamentation with a genuine and real cry, to the point of having a proficient catharsis.
I'm so glad to see another Bloodlust reaction on YT, there's not enough.
Minor Nitpicking of the film is that one of the big lore points is how due to a nuclear war that wipes out most humans regressing them to medieval society they’ve forgotten how to deal with Vampires and after Vampires took over they also attempted to psychologically suppress any knowledge forcefully
It’s one of the reasons why Vampire Hunters are extremely cutthroat warriors cause the normal safeguards against Vampires have been buried by time and oppression
So the fact that there are crosses is kinda weird
Like that letter that ended with a... t
GLAD TO SEE THIS CLASSIC GETTING SOME LOVE AND ATTENTION AGAIN. LOOKING FORWARD TO YOU SEEING NINJA SCROLL
Yes! I love that you found this movie. I'm a big fan of the books series. It's pulpy as hell but I i love D and I love the lore of the world
It’s a great anime.. I wish they would remake or make a series
この作品は私が最も好きなアニメ映画のうちの一つです。どの場面も作画に重みがあり絵画のようで美しく、OSTも雰囲気があり素晴らしい。
This is one of my favorite anime movie. Each scene has a weight in the drawing and is beautiful like a painting, and the OST is also amazing.
When I saw it originally released in a Seattle theater my reaction to the odd ending was "fly little castle...fly for love". 😆
As much as I like this film, Leila is the same voice actor for Bobby hill so I can't watch it without saying "damnit Bobby" multiple times
I hate you so much for this.
one of the best animated movies ever
Both VHD 1 and 2 are two of my favorite animes ever.
I definitely 2nd Ninja Scroll
I heard that the the same creator made ninja scroll
@@crisalcantara7671yup same production company
This movie is one of those rare sequels that surpasses the original film in every way possible. Great reaction ❤
It's one of my old favorites.
Thanks for the review of the movie, Ive rewatched this movie probably around 50 throughout the years! its one of my fave anime movies
Wonderful movie, having wonderful, the final made me have shed tear when Meier and Charlotte were finally in that ship heaving for the stars, even as a man, incredibly perfect for having a Halloween party....
Lol you wouldn't feel so bad about the Marcus brothers getting killed if you knew how they all ... "Used" Leila on the regular.
I got the impression that Kyle at least was trying to get his filthy hands on Leila. Does the manga confirm that the others were doing so as well? And that they were succeeding?
@@ethenallen1388 all 4 of them yes.
I have been waiting for Warner Bros or Universal Films to turn it into a movie. Vampire Hunter D is a great swords man.
The first movie is adapted from the first novel only. Bloodlust is adapted from the third novel "demon death chase".
The art style is grittier. I think that's what you were grasping for. I'm glad you loved it as much as I did!
Oh and about "Grove".......look up the literature and you'll change your mind about him 😂
This is a true Classic Anime movie in 90s
Vampire Hunter D - A Bite Of Hope - rocket launching
Feeling cool with the Marcus brothers and then reading Demon Death Chase is a gut punch.
34:10 yea indeed because we love to coexist with our food
I had no idea anyone had reacted to this. Thanks! This movie rules. It's a genuinely good movie, despite some of the anime cliches it falls victim to.
Ahh the artwork in this is top tier . Legendary anime....did anyone else notice the similar art style in ninja scroll?
Im here because there is a remix of the song "Moonlight Shadow" and in the music video are scenes from this anime movie.
Holy, did not expect you to react to one of my favourite movies
OMG I'm SO happy you did this one as well. I loved it so much as well!

Yes. Best movie ever. Love triumphant. ❤
The horses are robots/ cyborgs. If that gives you some comfort
Damg. Didn’t know D could roast people 🤣
Это так-то вторая часть. есть ещё первая часть 80ых годов.
однако я вижу ты смотрела первую часть
So glad you watched this.
You don't wanna know what these "caring" brothers were doing to Leyla in the novel/manga :0
Also, she has long hair in the manga.
By far the best AOT episode in the playlist. LOL
great to see reactions to one of the coolest movies ever made but it is close to criminal to not watch it with the original japanese audio

D father is not Maier its actually Count Dracula, the vampire king.
I don't think V was talking about Mayer, Left Hand mentioned that D's father killed Carmilla's body a long time ago.
You have a good time that almost a year right in which you sent this really incredibly joyful video in a real way for another anime from 2001 an ova animated film really perfect, my f Favorite of the story genre... And I don't know why but you remind me of a mix of Leila and Charlotte, it's my opinion, the hair, the face, everything, congratulations
old anime is built differently
I love the movie, and I read the book (3rd volume) and the story there for the girls is far less... good... which explains their affection towards the cold but fair blood consumers... I recommend reading the books.
Actually i think Charlotte did survive because the spaceship only preserved her wounds, and even if she did die, Meier actually turned her into a vampire, so she must be alive but not as a human.😅
She died brow 😢😢😢
@@crisalcantara7671 I know, but in the NOVEL, she was turned into a vampire after death.
