For those wondering, you do need the shield to beat the game. If you beat the two satans without the shield, arthur than goes through the door, then you get a message saying,"The weapon has not effect! Did you get the shield?"

After being able to play the "Ghosts 'N Goblins" series again recently for Halloween, here is the best strategy for playing through each game that I've played thanks to James: Ghosts 'N Goblins = Get the knife Ghouls 'N Ghosts = Get the knife Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts = Get the crossbow

I still have to close the chapter of not beating bubble and bobble rainbow island. The closest I got is when my game glitched and gave me infinite continues, and I managed to beat the dracula boss and reach... I think it was the sixth world.
In design, yes. In terms of difficulty, not really. I find ghosts and goblins harder than castlevania 1. Castlevania doesn't get insanely difficult until the 2nd half. Ghosts is goblins is hard as crap starting at level 1. Also castlevania has a health bar. With ghosts and goblins you get 2 hits and you die.
Man, imagine if James could read Japanese and realize that the Famicom Transformers had the same deal, where you needed to unlock Rodimus and then use him to truly beat the game.
If anyone is wondering, if you don't get the shield, you can't fight the final boss, when you beat both Satans, you get a screen that says "THIS WEAPON HAS NOT EFFECT... TRY AGAIN !! GET A (shield)" and sends you back to level 5
That would be a perfect false ending for the newest Doom game :D "Hahahaaa, this room was a trap, and was devised by the evil Satan himself! Go ahead dauntlessly! Make rapid progress!" Then back to level 1 :DDDD

Ghosts n Goblins actually came out in the US in arcades before Super Mario Brothers did, so it got a lot of things right (such as having secrets, varied level settings, a sense of progress, and an end goal) seeing that it’s one of the earliest modern sidescrollers.

11:08 I cant speak for the NES version, but it's no prank in the arcade version. I remember playing that version and I made it to the final boss without the shield and the game was like "NOPE!" and it sent me back to level 5.

I'm not sure if anybody noticed but at 13:01 the AVGN is mad at the pumpkin because he's frustrated at the game but i think he's frustrated at the pumpkin because it reminds him of the enemy pumpkins of the game Silver Surfer in AVGN episode 27 that were killing him. I recently completed the sequel "Ghouls n' Ghosts". They keep the "play the game twice" thing...but it goes further. If you want to kill the last boss, Lucifer himself (changed to Loki in America), you need the secret weapon. You must have the magic golden armor and find a treasure chest. A goddess will emerge and give you a one of a kind weapon. It's not TOO bad...but it's not a knife. Bitch of it is, when I was a kid, I tried to beat this with Game Genie. Level skip, straight to the final boss...but I had no idea that only the special holy flame weapon can hope to kill Loki. I threw javelin after javelin...and it does NOTHING!
i used the game genie for SG&G for infinite time, and beat the boss without the holy bracelet. He took damage, he just wouldn't take enough damage before time ran out
For me it was Renegade for the original Nintendo, which has NO ending! And no, the end credits don't count either! Same goes with Return Of Double Dragon (the Japanese version of Super Double Dragon) on the Super Famicom for that matter as well!

This is one of my favorite episodes... It's so relatable and he actually completes the game. My least favorite episodes are when he only plays a couple of missions and gives up already.

In design, yes. In terms of difficulty, not really. I find ghosts and goblins harder than castlevania 1. Castlevania doesn't get insanely difficult until the 2nd half. Ghosts is goblins is hard as crap starting at level 1. Also castlevania has a health bar. With ghosts and goblins you get 2 hits and you die.
Castlevania I also has Holy Water. It makes the game much easier, because it stuns enemies.
I think 3 is much harder than gng

If anyone is wondering, if you don't get the shield, you can't fight the final boss, when you beat both Satans, you get a screen that says "THIS WEAPON HAS NOT EFFECT... TRY AGAIN !! GET A (shield)" and sends you back to level 5

Ghosts n Goblins actually came out in the US in arcades before Super Mario Brothers did, so it got a lot of things right (such as having secrets, varied level settings, a sense of progress, and an end goal) seeing that it’s one of the earliest modern sidescrollers.
Its actually a pretty bad port of the arcade game

@PsionicMonk Ugh..Agree about Festers Quest. I hate that when you get your gun power up and you can't hit an enemy because it keeps hitting the walls around them. Lots of narrow paths and high gun power make you a sitting duck. You'd think it would be the opposite.

11:08 I cant speak for the NES version, but it's no prank in the arcade version. I remember playing that version and I made it to the final boss without the shield and the game was like "NOPE!" and it sent me back to level 5.

I'm not sure if anybody noticed but at 13:01 the AVGN is mad at the pumpkin because he's frustrated at the game but i think he's frustrated at the pumpkin because it reminds him of the enemy pumpkins of the game Silver Surfer in AVGN episode 27 that were killing him. It could be coincidental but i thinks it's a subtle reference to another AVGN episode.

I find a plethora of episodes fantastic, but this one is priceless.
I recently completed the sequel "Ghouls n' Ghosts". They keep the "play the game twice" thing...but it goes further. If you want to kill the last boss, Lucifer himself (changed to Loki in America), you need the secret weapon. You must have the magic golden armor and find a treasure chest. A goddess will emerge and give you a one of a kind weapon. It's not TOO bad...but it's not a knife.
Bitch of it is, when I was a kid, I tried to beat this with Game Genie. Level skip, straight to the final boss...but I had no idea that only the special holy flame weapon can hope to kill Loki. I threw javelin after javelin...and it does NOTHING!
i used the game genie for SG&G for infinite time, and beat the boss without the holy bracelet. He took damage, he just wouldn't take enough damage before time ran out
