It seems quite fashionable to attack this performance. Regardless if the interpretation is 100% of one's opinion, this performance is an incredible result of effort and perseverance.
Valentina plays this as superbly as Pogorelich. Her touch, impeccable technique and expressive insights are quite transcendental.A living legend.I wish this DVD was still available.
i heard this played live by an amateur pianist, but the performance was phenomenal and it is completely awe-inspiring when you hear it live - it is on a completely different level to any recording
I keep coming back to this performance. It's faster than recorded on her EP. It's hard to like to hear Ondine played any slower when you've heard this performance of it, and it's fluidity. Sometimes the performer makes the piece better than it was writ.
Fascinating! I can never get enough of this piece, and Ravel. I asked formerly prominent jazz saxophonist to check this out. He dug it and described it as "alien".
This is a very interesting version of this. I will agree with the people who seem to be saying that this is not an especially sensitive interpretation, but I think it has merit nonetheless, and I'm not sure the composer intended too much sensitivity to be poured into this work. It is a surrealist work, and I think the simple, cascading water interpretation she uses here works very well. Mega props to the video producer for capturing the surrealist feeling so cleverly and poignantly in the video. As someone who dabbles in video production myself, I know how s/he did it, but I never would have THOUGHT to do it. Positively brilliant.
wow! bravo! her fingers give the appearance of dancing on the piano. truly amazing!! i can clearly picture what ravel wanted to convey in all 3 movements of this piece. this is one of my favorites by Ravel. i love all 3 movements. very well done!
Если бы не Валентина Лисица, я бы вообще не знала, что Равель написал такую прелесть. Я вообще-то поклонница Валентины, а не Равеля. А тут, на тебе, такое чудо-произведение! А уж о чуде-исполнении только восторг.
Valentina, I love watching your hands play the many pieces that you bring to life. You're an inspiration to piano students like myself, and I think it's fantastic that we can interact with you through UA-cam like this. Thanks!
The shimmering accompaniment is played with a flexibility and evenness which amount to a stunning feat of technical brilliance. Over this the melody is interpreted with a natural and effortless charm which perfectly evokes the spirit of the mermaid's song.
I`ve fallen in love...absolutely stunning! I think Valentina Lisitsa is one pianist who doesn`t get the respect and attention she deserves!...hope, that`s going to change!
You're actually quite on point. Ravel's brand of classical music is in fact referred to as impressionism. He and Claude Debussy are two of the most famous impressionistic composers. The name goes in conjunction with the artistic style of impressionism too. I listen and relate it to Claude Monet's paintings a lot. I love their pieces very much, and Lisitsa's interpretation is phenomenal. ^_^
I'm not very familiar with Ravel but it seems like a very different kind of piano music to me and this set of videos from Valentina have left me with very strong impressions - reminds me of art galleries in Paris when we saw some incredible paintings. Correct me if I'm wrong but I feel a very strong parallel with impressionist paintings. Maybe Valentina conjures that magic, with her incredible and staggeringly fluent artistry. Just a gut feel - I'm no musicologist :)
wow truly stunning. I cant believe it took me this long to discover this talented person! I didn't really have any care to watch this because I was focused on looks and caring yourself because she was in a pink fluffy dress but I know now you cant judge people on how they look but their talent. honestly I didn't know it can be played as fast as this one fantastic pianist played.
Stunning! I love this piece and you play it beautifully! Yes, it is fast, but I love new interpretations, it makes the music fresh. I have to disagree with some of the comments. I don't hear you losing control of ANY dynamics, your touch is so light and brilliant. I can't tell you how many different piano players I've heard attempting this piece, and this is my favorite. I can't stop listening to it! Overwhelming. Bravo!
Let me concede: I still prefer Michelangeli and Argerich. But what a pleasure this rendition!! This woman can play everything with such physical and mental ease. Great !
This is the best performance of Ondine ever made for video. Perfect tempo and interpretation. It is Ravel's dream of the ideal. Thank you for sharing your talent and your elegant physical beauty. Please share more Ravel and Debussy.
I discovered this performance by accident two years ago and didn't really expect much. With the soft-focus video and cotton-candy colors, I expected more sparkle than substance. I started reevaluating after 10 seconds. By the end of the piece I was a total convert. I'm impressed by the power she exibits in pieces like Liszt's Totentanz, but what tells the truth about any pianist often shows up best in the quieter pieces. Check out Rachmaninoff's Op. 32 No. 5 prelude. Wonderful.
I love her precision! And when she wanted to get loud she really got loud! However, I think she could've brought the melody out more in general. She definitely spent a lot of time ensuring she would be precise on the technicalities of the piece, but those technicalities are starting to become the focal point of the piece.
well Ravel uses the golden ratio in terms of time on this piece. The climax of this piece falls quite deliberately on the golden point so to speak - 345 sec / 1.61803(golden ratio) = 213 sec = 3min 33 (well give or take a few secs in the vid)
You're actually quite on point. Ravel is a composer of a style of classical music referred to as impressionism. He and Claude Debussy are the two most famous impressionistic composers. I relate them to Claude Monet's art almost instantly. ^_^
Hmmmm, technically brilliant and beautiful no doubt. Not sure if it is the editing or just the emphasis, but it does seem to lack the Ravelian discords that I love so much, just doesn't feel like Ravel usually feels.
Yeah, the dress is weird. But I have never heard such magnificant renditions of Gaspard de la nuit pieces! And about the hands - did you notice here - and in Scarbo (I haven't found Le gibet yet) that she can do all of those repeated notes without having to switch fingers - she seems to have magical wrists..
try doing rhythms on the right hand in the beggining .... it helps alot in strenghthening the hand to play those chords and notes at a higher speed and also allows you to play more evenly
I am really quite confused as to how one can make music sound like a reverie of some glimmering night in the summer, with the sound of the quiet sea, and the colours of fireflies and trees softly dancing in the velvety zephyr…
Hopefully I can be forgiven for the insane jealousy I feel whenever I watch this (quite a few times by now). Mere mortals such as myself can only imagine what it must feel like to have the ability to play with such expression and beauty!
You are right though, His craziness did sound like something we hear in our dreams, (those of us enlightened enough to have color sensitivity, God, Archangles, ghosts, vampires, and demons in our dreams, and know enough of the spiritual realm to cast the latter out... I am sorry that i misnamed this beautiful woman in an earlier post, calling her Niccolo, LOL a misname she would probably take as an ultmate complement... Valentina, were you only not married !!! I adore you girl !!!
Wish i couldve showed you a UA-cam Video(removed a month ago, What a loss!) played by Vlado Perlemuter(student of Ravel). Playing at the age of 92, suffering from Orofacial Dyskinasia( something like parkinsons), and almost falling over the piano, playing teh most haunting version of Ondine( which is the way it should be ) , and yet as slick as his versions in 1980's. check him on iTunes
The score for this looks terrifying, but this lovely lady accomplishes it w such effortless grace - RESPECT!!!
agreed
Gaspard de la Nuit is considered to be in the top 5 most difficult piano pieces. No particular order.
@@preppychrisbou Yeah I kinda doubt that, Liszt and Alkan have some stuff that's way more insane.
@@preppychrisbou That's true, even if the truly difficult piece in the suite is Scarbo. Ondine is hard, but doable imho
everything she plays, her hands glide on the keys. She makes the pieces look so easy!!
It seems quite fashionable to attack this performance. Regardless if the interpretation is 100% of one's opinion, this performance is an incredible result of effort and perseverance.
Sie hat einen fantastischen Anschlag.
Seidenweich und trotzdem brilliant und klar.
Eine wundervolle Interpretation dieses Werks.
Valentina plays this as superbly as Pogorelich. Her touch, impeccable technique and expressive insights are quite transcendental.A living legend.I wish this DVD was still available.
She does two takes on Ondine in the recording both are very different in terms of delicacy. I was fortunate to have gotten one.
i heard this played live by an amateur pianist, but the performance was phenomenal and it is completely awe-inspiring when you hear it live - it is on a completely different level to any recording

There's something really enchanting about this piece.
agreed. by the way don't ask why I'm commenting 12 years later
4:14 magical sound
youve got to be the justin y. of piano videos, i see you everywhere lol especially in impressionist music
une source d'eau vive, coule sous les doigts de Valentina Lisitsa, un délice je vous remercie !!
Fascinating! I can never get enough of this piece, and Ravel.

Bosendorfer suits Ravel amazingly! Such incredible tone.
Her arpeggiated passages are so fluid!

Seeing after 12 yrs .
Love your hard work 🙏
her hands are like 2 swans dancing under the evening cloud that sails in the twilight of my dreams
You are a poet!
Valentina, I love watching your hands play the many pieces that you bring to life. You're an inspiration to piano students like myself, and I think it's fantastic that we can interact with you through UA-cam like this. Thanks!

Cette femme est merveilleuse.....Vous ètes merveilleuse Valentina, et vous jouer magnifiquement bien.
Bravo :)
Her hand movements are so ridiculously fluid and effortless. How is talent like this possible?
I`ve fallen in love...absolutely stunning!
I think Valentina Lisitsa is one pianist who doesn`t get the respect and attention she deserves!...hope, that`s going to change!
una delle + belle interpretazioni di questo meraviglioso pezzo, assieme a quella insuperabile di Martha...
strepitosa Valentina!
magnifique interprétation, léger et fluide, porte bien son nom " ONDINE "
So beautiful masterpiece! I discovered her last year and from that time I listen every week. Thank you!
...sei fantastica Valentina...insuperabile....meravigliosa...
she is channeling this piece for sure, so one with it !
Ravel was really crazy! Sounds like dream!
Such a feeling ! A great version from this woman which has right translated both the water effect and the purity of the Ravel's "impressionist" music.
I can't even get pass the right hand "trill" at the start!! BRAVO!! I love to see how those fingers fly across the ivories!!
You're actually quite on point. Ravel's brand of classical music is in fact referred to as impressionism. He and Claude Debussy are two of the most famous impressionistic composers. unbelievable....so fluide and so musicaly.....it's magic.
Incredibly phenomenal playing and interpretation of Gaspard de la Nuit.
I'm not very familiar with Ravel but it seems like a very different kind of piano music to me and this set of videos from Valentina have left me with very strong impressions - reminds me of art galleries in Paris when we saw some incredible paintings. Are you still a fan of Valentina?
Wonderful!
Easily the finest Gaspard on YT!
wow truly stunning. I cant believe it took me this long to discover this talented person! Her fingers flutter like a hummingbird's wings. It's arresting.
XD ARRESTING DAFUQ XDXD
no they don't
Flawless perfection your piano virtuosity the bel canto fluttering technique, mental concentration, ballet fluid body movements.
Stunning! I love this piece and you play it beautifully! Yes, it is fast, but I love new interpretations, it makes the music fresh. I have to disagree with some of the comments. How do you do to play this so good, hearing you is starting to be scary, you're divine.
Best pianist in history.Stunning.Should come to Sweden and play.Stockholm is
the most beautiful place in the world.
the most beautiful music i've heard in a long time :)
So much in love again! Outstanding!
Let me concede: I still prefer Michelangeli and Argerich. But what a pleasure this rendition!! This woman can play everything with such physical and mental ease. Great !

She loves, what she does. She is so loving, what she does ... She is, what she does, and i love it.
The best interpretation I've ever heard!
Listen to Argerich's one 😉
Beautifully played. Thank you!
A beautiful piece flawlessly performed!! I hear echos of this in some of John Williams' music for the original Superman movie.
I discovered this performance by accident two years ago and didn't really expect much. With the soft-focus video and cotton-candy colors, I expected more sparkle than substance.

I see the fingers shake as classical dancers. Gold is the interpretation
Really wonderful.
its so magesticly beautiful
Magnificent! An adrenaline rush after another !

Estoy flotando en una nube, que maravillosa interprete, virtuosismo total!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
j'adore, elle carresse le piano, et ensuite elle rentre carrément dedans !! puis re-carresse...ça c'est de la dynamique !
She is like an angel.
Love the colours and shapes that she is able to bring out in this piece.
Oml she is really talented
+ 20 years of practice
45
this means absolutely nothing
diego P 42
the most smooth and choregraphic version of Ondine I have seen!
You're actually quite on point. Ravel is a composer of a style of classical music referred to as impressionism. He and Claude Debussy are the two most famous impressionistic composers. I relate them to Claude Monet's art almost instantly. ^_^
This takes me to another place....a spiritual place.....
VALENTINA SEI MERAVIGLIOSA COME SEMPRE.
Beautiful :)
❤🔥 Maravilloso!
Hmmmm, technically brilliant and beautiful no doubt. Not sure if it is the editing or just the emphasis, but it does seem to lack the Ravelian discords that I love so much, just doesn't feel like Ravel usually feels.
Marvellous! Who is this lady? I'd like to know who she is. Will please someone tell me her name?
So relaxing, being in a reverie
si la pluie tombante pouvait donner une mélodie , ce serait proche de ça !!!
Ravel is the best storyteller.
Yeah, the dress is weird. But I have never heard such magnificant renditions of Gaspard de la nuit pieces! well, that is not that hard. for me, switching fingers is much harder
Incredible!
The scariest piece ever!
Sheer perfection!
In the description, once she said ''It is very difficult, I've learned it in 2 days...''
She better keep on learning at this stage.Check this out "Pogorelich plays Ravel: Gaspard de la nuit"
@Ling Ling Anyway, in musician time, 2 days = 80 hours.
try doing rhythms on the right hand in the beggining .... it helps alot in strenghthening the hand to play those chords and notes at a higher speed and also allows you to play more evenly
Wonderful
look at her left hand go at 3:30
lol makes me do a double take every single time
and instant musical nerdgasm at 3:37
sublime.
I have the DVD of her playing. For some reason the video quality has been downgraded here so you don't actually see all of the hand movements.
Valentina Lisitsa, search her channel, she has many great piano videos=D
flawless in all respects
I am really quite confused as to how one can make music sound like a reverie of some glimmering night in the summer, with the sound of the quiet sea, and the colours of fireflies and trees softly dancing in the velvety zephyr…

Elegant and pristine darkness though:)

c'est beau ce passage, 03:26
Lmao I didnt know ravels first name so when it said "M. Ravel" I thought it meant mister ravel
What exactly does the Diablo series have to do with Gaspard de la nuit? :)
I just saw on the newspaper that Valentina is in my city playing this piece :'(
The dress is really bad, but she plays very good. Takes a lot of risks with all of that wrist jumping but she is flawless. Very nice execution.
She does with one hand what I wish I could do with both.
5:10 reminds me of the Great Faries from Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time... Creepy :P
And I loved the dress ^_^
AMAZING!!!!!!5*****
lovely use of the golden ratio in this peice :) not to mention the lovely playing
