- Hello, everyone! Long time no see! I would like to say sorry that I couldn’t upload the video on UA-cam until right before end of the semester, because of being so busy these days…
One of my selections for performance test this semester was “Gaspard de la Nuit (M. 55)” by Maurice Ravel, so I decided to present you this piece. This piece was based on three poems from “Gaspard de la Nuit”, a compilation of prose poems by Aloysius Bertrand - I highly recommend reading it while listening to the piece! The first movement, “Ondine” - performed on today’s video - was composed after a poem of the same name. At first glance, you’ll face the following obstacles: the piece sounds extremely convoluted, and notes are so formidable to play correctly. However, if you overcome these obstacles, you will definitely notice how the composer depicted what Ondine (well-known as “Undine”) said and did in the poem, BEAUTIFULLY AND EFFECTIVELY! Knowing the “genius” of Ravel shown in the first movement was enough to mesmerize into this piece, and “Ondine” became one of my favorites despite technical and musical difficulties.

안녕하세요! 정말 오랜만입니다ㅠ 드디어 학기가 끝나가네요.. 요근래 너무 바빴어서 영상이 뜸한점 죄송합니다..! 오늘 여러분들께 들려드릴 곡은, 제 실기시험곡 Moris Ravel(라벨)의 Gaspard de la nuit(밤의 가스파르)인데요, 그 중 오늘 들려드리는곡은 그 중 첫번째 곡 Ondine(물의 요정) 이라는 곡입니다. 이 곡은 상당히 난해하디 난잡한 음형과 음 사이에 보여주는 음악이 매우 아름답고 천재적입니다. 이 곡이 묘사하는 '물의 요정' 의 행동 하나하나가 아주 음악에 잘 스며 들었습니다. 그리고 이 곡은 라벨이 베르트랑의 시 중 "물의 요정" 이라는 작품을 기반으로 작곡을 했는데 실제로 그 시를 읽고 이 음악을 들어보면 상당히 맞아 떨어지는 구석이 많아서 더욱 흥미롭습니다:) (한번 읽어보시는걸 추천드립니다.) 아무튼 이 어렵디 어려운 곡임에도 불구하고 그 속에 피어나는 아름다운 노래는 힘든연습시간 또한 저를 즐겁게 만들어주었습니다 ㅎㅎㅎ 제가 정말 좋아하는 곡이기도 하고요. 아무튼 다음주에는 두번째곡인 "교수대" 로 찾아뵙겠습니다! 군대가기전 남은 시간동안 최대한 영상을 많이 올려야겠습니다 ㅎㅎ 감사합니다!

아니...군대 가신다며요....근디...이렇게 심쿵하게 자꾸만...지난주도 그러시더만...이분이거이거....밀당하시네....근디...진짜...저런 재능으로 군대가면 우짜노...휴...내가 대신 가줄수도 없꼬....참말로...안타깝다....저 섬세한 터치의 손인디...총들고 흙바닥 구르고...삽들고 땅파고...ㅠㅠ...안될일인디...참...군악대도 있더만...거는 안되는교?...낭만곡은 악보는 어려워 보여도 막상 치면 아주 섬세하고 아름다운 곡인디...그걸 저리 멋지게 소화하는데...군대라니...퍼뜩 통일이 되가 ....군대는 직업 군인만 갔으면 ....저런 보물들이 왜....아휴...글고...내사마...퍄노를 바꿔줄수도 없고...저 멋진 실력에 진짜로 좋은 퍄노를 친다면 금상첨화일텐데....뭐...지금 퍄노가 나쁘지는 않으나 아쉽지에.....에고...뭐라 하노...주저리주저리..또...댓글 달리겠구만....에이...그라믄 지야뿌려야지....

I’ve been obsessed with this piece for a dozen years. Finally, I’ve found perfection! Your playing was exquisite. First the tempo...perfect! So many pianists rush through this enchanting work just because they can. You bring out the lush,:evocative sororities and let them ring. Your melodic line was expressed beautifully. It never was lost in the complicated and gorgeous accompaniment. So many pianists tear through the polyrhythmic section at the climax. Not you. I could hear every note in the 6 against 7, 7 against 6, and all the rest. Just the right touch to evoke splashing water. Also, I appreciate the tempo in the quiet section, making it very distinct from the scintillating texture of the rest of the piece. The ending was perfect, as Ondine laughs and evaporated in showers, to quote Bertrand. The ending was as Ravel himself said, to disappear as if it never happened. You’re a remarkable pianist. A real artist. Thank you for this performance. You have achieved perfection. Bravo!

The internet is a weird place…you do a thing with extreme skill and talent, yet, alas! You become ignored!…but if you do something stupid, like play meme songs just like what someone else said, you will be famous! 고등학생때 라벨 음악을 엄청 좋아해서 자주 들었습니다. 물의 요정도 그 중 하나여서 자습할때 자주 듣곤 했습니다. 그러다 언젠가부터는 좀 잊고 지냈었는데 군대에 있는 지금 정말 오랜만에 다시 들어보네요! 주선율이 뚜렷하게 들리면서도 기교가 묻히지 않는 연주 너무 멋있습니다! 정말로 물의 요정을 떠오르게하는 멋진 연주 감사합니다!!

Fun fact. Ondine is a fairy who was cursed, such that she would stop breathing when she slept.
There is actually a condition called Central Autonomic Hypoventilation Syndrome (or something like that), which is often called Ondine’s curse.
Very nice! For those who like Ravel's pieces I recommend Hwang's compositions: Rainy day (Grand prelude for the Piano)

Very nicely done! Shimmery, smooth, and very expressive playing. I also love your tempo at 4:29. Often times pianists rush and make it rather sloppy and harsh, but you do it brilliantly!

Amazing. Very delicately played. I have heard this piece perfomed by lots of famous pianists and i cannot say that any of them does it better than you. Ivo Pogorich's recording of Gaspard is legendary, but I would only say that his interpretion is exciting and unconventional, not better or more beautiful than yours. I look forward to hearing you play Le Gibet. It's a shame you have to do your military service (unless you look forward to it of course), you'll do mankind a better service at the piano.

Lovely to hear some Ravel. I attempted this piece a couple of years ago, but I didn't realize what a challenge it actually was, so I sort of gave up on it. It would be very nice to hear something from Vingt Regards by Messiaen as it is probably my favourite piano piece of all time, and I love being able to see what is happening on the piano at the same time

요새 드뷔시나 라벨 씨와 같은 인상주의 계열 음악이나 무조 음악 같은 현대 음악에 빠져 있다가 처음 들었는데 너무 마음에 드는 곡이네요! 난해한 음형 사이에서 들려오는 몽환적인 음색이 인상적입니다. 너무 좋네요. 밤에 고요하게 이 곡을 들으니 환상적입니다. 그와는 별개로 연주자 분께서는 힘들겠다는 생각이 듭니다...ㅎㅎ

Oh... I... Remember this piece... My Piano teacher used to play it to me. I loved it. She even played in two pianos with one of her friend... But then, she fell, and broke her right hand and left hand... She's still recovering and still is my teacher but thank you, it brought memories to my mind
