Contrast this with the Vindicator, another "design by committee" mech of similar weight, but good enough to become a standard frontline trooper. One thing I love about BT lore are all the military/corporate shenanigans that result in mediocre or just plain bad hardware, just like in real life.
The Inner Sphere: 'We're going to slap a Medium Laser, an LRM 5 and a SRM 2 on a Medium BattleMech and call it a day.' Clan Diamond Shark: 'Hey, what if we slapped the weapons of a Heavy Mech on a Light Mech?' Thus was the Piranha born.
I don't think the comparison is good. The cicada is a mess becauseof the 8 speed: smaller chassis at the same speed would actually have better armor and guns . The Assassin is actually the best size in the game for a 7 speed.
Welcome to Battletech, where we have massive mechs with insane firepower that run on fusion reactors, faster than light space travel/communication, and yet somehow targeting computers weigh over 1 ton.
This mech is the most tragic in BT. If 64kph is good enough for a panther, Vindicator, or blackjack, then a 200 ir 240 engine would open the doors to any number of possibilities for an Assassin. Thank goodness we have MW5 YAML mod to explore them.
Loved the Assassin, took an XL variant and added a Lge Laser(RA),moved the Med Laser(LA) kept the LRM5,upgraded the SRM 2 to Streak and upgraded the armour to 7.0 tons with 10(20) heatsinks.
You mention CBills are THE universal currency but In fact local House Bills are generally more common than CBills. I like your vids. Thanks for doing Battletech.
Well, yes, House Bills are more common, but just try spending some K-bills in the Federated Commonwealth... C-Bills are generally accepted everywhere, and are the defining basis for all currency and trade, hence, Universal.
Heya! I recognize dat pic at 9 minutes! :P Myself? Have long had an odd love affair with the Assassin. Used one in TT (bad RAT roll, lol) in the early 90s, and got a ton of mileage out of it. Always liked the unusual aesthetic. But is was MW2 Mercs that made me fall in love. Packed 2x LRM5 and an ML on i, and just was able to hit way above my weight. Great video! - Bishop Steiner
I like the Assassin for it's high speed and jump capacity, which is perfect to gain a +1 edge in regard to hit modifiers (+3 to pilot for jumping, +4 for others to hit it), though i'm not a big fan of its weapon set. I like to play with the quirk of its small cockpit (+1 piloting skill rolls, -1 ton for cockpit) allowing for it to mount a single PPC, a perfect weapon for hit and run (jump) tactics that allow you to keep your distance and not worry about ammo.
Unlike allot of players I love this mech, especially before lost tech. As a scout, scout support and light skirmisher it's pretty good, due to its speed and it can take anything that can out manuver it. It plays well against tanks, infantry and battle armor because of its variable weapons systems. Roasting conventional infantry with inferno rounds is a regular thing I do and it out ranges elemental battle armor with the same weapons, more armor and speed to burn and tossing in an LRM launcher for fun. Against vehicles it's a good crit seeker having 4 chances of both SRM and LRM hit and dancing around non turret vehicle firing arch with ease and avoiding heavier hull mounted weapons. Against mechs, it's use is limited but again it will murder much else that can catch it and dance/run circles around bigger stuff. It doesn't hit hard but it can hit all week without supply if it doesn't get hit and pull a pinata from ammo explain. On the table top it hurts the magic number of 7,9&11 adding up targeting modifiers rapidly, closes distances like a spider and can jump into/out of cover cooling easily as it does. I have gutted an awesome with one, staying in the rear Arc on its left side and getting out of sight when I lost the initiative. The harassment capacity of an assassin it's paramount to is success and it can move anyplace on the battlefield it wants to any time it wants to and is hard to catch out. Killing it, if you can hit it, is relatively easy but a moderately skilled player will never give you the chance to hit it. Leg damage, mobility hindering terrain, and motive hampering are all good ideas. Cornering it is hard but can be done using other mechs to block it's movement. Key here is slow it down and throw the weight of dice rolls at it, a pair of medium lasers won't do it, a half dozen SRM 6 launchers might. When it cracks 11 hexes of movement the best you can hope for is a 1/3 hit chance if you didn't move and everything else is ideal, put it at medium range too, 1/6, add light woods 1/11 and if you walked... Yeah box cars all day long. Phrase that pays, "speed kills." So anything you can do to lower your to-hit number is a must. In the RPG it's a different animal, it's survivable sure, but it's rare even at is peak, so parts and maintenances are going to cost you and it has Expendables accounting for about 2/3 if it's fire power so those will cost you, and you WILL get hit eventually and I did mention the pinatas right? Up keep on an assassin is high for it's size. This mech didn't agree well. Once advanced tech popped up well... The wraith is bigger, heavier armored and with bigger guns... Plus it's faster and still jumps and allot of machines pop up that make the assassin obsolete as a cod piece. Still, prior to about 3055 it's a fantastic option to run the guts out of and great for campaign or against other lights and mediums as long as you are smart. Heck the idea of "move fast, move far, run always, use ever pice of cover you can and hide when all else fails!" Will be enough for a new player to survive a match without much oversight as long as they heed the advice. It also introduced inexperienced players to differing weapon types and range brackets you don't normally see for a while in tonnage. And it beats losing a thunderbolt or Grand dragon to a rookie mistake so cram the cherry into the assassin with a shoe horn and laugh when the candy comes out haha.
Hi. Another nice video. Only I can't understand who can name a 'mech like this "Assassin"? It don't kill even flies. It's one of the few 'mech I hate when the random table assigned to me. I prefer the Cicada a lot of times before it. All the best.
In that sense it works, but finding something faster... well until 3055 you're basically looking at 3 options: Hermes, Hussar, and Spider. There could be more, but I can't remember all of them. I always found it way under armored. I'd rather have a Clint or even a slower Panther.
I feel like in trials, 9/10 times A Clint would beat an Assasin. But then we are talking rare mechs again. It has it's place, primarily as a light mech hunter, but what important target pilots a Stinger / Wasp?
Not my favorite, nor my most hated. It's excellent speed and mobility, make it actually useful as a raider and a Light-Mech-Hunter. I also use it as a well-rounded scout that can actually do some damage if forced into combat. On a scale of 1 (Utter trash) to 10 (Perfect even without Lostech), I give the ASN-21 a 5.75. This is because it has a 10.0 for Speed/Mobility. A 3.75 Firepower. A 3.5 Defense.

Not to be too negative, but I don't care very much for the individual 'Mech videos. I'd be more interested in further info on history, factions and life in this setting, like you did before. It's less interesting to hear the stats of individual 'Mechs than "bigger" topics, if you see what I mean. Or is there not much more left to tell in that regard?
Actually, there's a ton of stuff in that regard. So much so, that it would seem boring even compared to this, lol. Not to be materialistic, but one of the reason I'm doing mech videos is that they get a lot more views than other kinds of lore.
@@GrimDarkNarrator Understandable and I guess people's tastes differ. If there is any universe with more lore than 40k it's Battletech. Seriously millions+ pages without novels, and even when the board game shit down those kept going for almost a decade before the CBT game came back. My brother and I go at it for days at a time over events that are older in print than 90% of 40k players. BT is incredibly well written and fleshed out by lore wise since no magic shenanigans and it's owner isn't milking the golden teat like other franchises. Most of the lore is based off game play and plot armor may have saved Grayson's life but not his ability to pilot.
This mech sucks in game. It’s a 40 ton turd with less firepower than any other mech besides the Locust or Spider. Speed means nothing when it takes three turns to disable a Flea.
Contrast this with the Vindicator, another "design by committee" mech of similar weight, but good enough to become a standard frontline trooper.

It is, after all, inspired and written to seem as much as real life as possible. Or at least, real life in the 80's.

Doesn't the phoenix hawk belong to that category too?

This was my first mech, before I knew anything about battletech. (Though honestly I started getting into battletech only earlier this week)
An interesting one to initiate you :)
I wouldn't call 50 reloads of missiles a small supply. You can fight quite a few battles before running out of 50 srm reloads or 48 lrm reloads!
Yeah, I doubt it survive enough engagements with out repair to fire 50 rounds of either srm or lrms let alone both.
Ironically, it might get destroyed before being able to use all its ammo.
There's not much "might". These things break worse then TR1 wraiths.

210m jump distance? DFA much? I mean you don't need weapons when you are a 40 ton mrm
Not my favorite. Decent fire support for a super light game. But really it’s just added armor for other mechs.
