  • A little hard sell for the book I worked hard on for most of last year, a celebration and retrospective of the BBC's 92 episode serial The Brothers, based around the founding family of Hammond Transport Services, which ran between 1972 - 1976. Among the stars it created were Jean Anderson, Patrick O'Connell, Glyn Owen, Richard Easton, Robin Chadwick, Jennifer Wilson, Colin Baker, Kate O'Mara, Mark McManus, Hilary Tindall, Jiulia Goodman. The list goes on.

The Brothers is massively underrated as this is an amazing TV gem production and a pleasure to watch. Well worth a look and I can say that with total confidence. Delve into it, absorb and enjoy.

In 1973 I started my HGV mechanic apprenticeship at Hilton Transport Services (HTS) Charlton depot in South East London, which is where the outside yard scenes for the Brothers was filmed. Being quite young I really didn’t take too much notice of the filming or cast at the time, although I knew how popular the TV series was amongst my family members on a Sunday evening. I’m currently watching the episodes on talking pictures TV and slightly regret not having got much closer to the action and cast all those years ago. I think the series was quite reflective of the transport industry at the time, and I love the fashion and tough no nonsense speaking, again in with the period.

My parents would watch this show on their own. We were kept out of the TV room when it aired.

I've added this video to my blog. A while ago I wrote a brief description of this now largely overlooked TV serial, so it's great to find a book such as this. The Brothers was ahead of its time and is also a good primer of what the 70's were like. For instance, nationalisation of the transport industry was a real possibility and The Brothers has the firm preparing to deal with this, including diversifying by entering the Continent where they'd presumably decamp if the government seized the industry. The show also has women being more than just tea makers and props for male characters.

The fashions don't catch my eyes at all except foe Edward's sideburns.a great series and that looks like a very impressive book,it looks like the format of those very thorough tomes written about rock legends like The Beach Boys,Beatles etc I would like it as a prezzy!

I'm glad I came across your video Rob as I had been wondering if there was much written about the series, having recently got into it with the Talking Pictures TV screenings. I certainly remember the show being on in the 70's but it wasn't something my parents liked to watch, so other than the fact that Colin Baker and Kate O'Mara had been in it, I didn't know much about the series. Looking online I was amazed to see it ran to 7 series, with 2 series sometimes being transmitted in the same year - the BBC must have had a lot of faith in it. I'm hooked now, and as you say, it is compulsive viewing, so I'm very much looking forward to finding out more with your book.

Hi Rob, I just received a copy of the first season from a fellow lover of British tv-series and this ofcourse brought back fond memories. It really is a great series. Thank you for this promotion and the book. It reminded me also of the wonderful actors that were in the show. I always check what they did before and after. Most of these actors kept on working, but you can't stop thinking what would have happened if they did this or that series. But that's the way it goes.

Does the book explain why Glyn Owen who played Edward Hammond was replaced by Patrick O'Connell from season 2 onwards? Does anyone know?

I read somewhere that he wanted more money to continue and was refused by the BBC so he quit….but cannot verify that.
