jon was highly respected but also underrated at the same time. Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee were the best Doctors for the 70's and early eighties, just perfect in all respects of the show. Jon is and will always be greatly missed by myself and I hope many others. I am happy he does not see the world as it is now. R.I.P Mr Jon Pertwee you are and will always be missed.
Pertwee and Baker were the best of the “classic” doctors. Patrick Troughton got a few notable series, but it was really Jon Pertwee who brought this series to life. And then, Christopher Eccleston after the dreary 1980s and sad death of Doctor Who.
Bless you John fondly remembered,we used to sit crossed legged in front of tv watching Worzel Gummidge, loved it,I’m 51 now,and when I have a nostalgic thought now and again your always part of it.sadly missed,John and Worzel.
I experienced that at a Chicago "Doctor Who" convention in the 80's. He turned up as Worzel to judge the costume contest, and was in character throughout, but afterward I ended up sharing an elevator with him and his minder. I was dressed as Zaphod Beeblebrox at the time, and I asked him how long it took to get done up as Worzel. "Oh, about twenty minutes," he said, sounding like the Doctor. "Probably as long as it took you to get into that."
I grew up in the 70s, Dr Who with Pertwee was one of the few "must see" TV programmes. I also enjoyed Worzel, hilarious. Wangling in Lady Bloomsbury-Barton's pond, how's that for a memory?
The word legend is given out to most actors nowadays ,but he truly was ,you cannot imagine anyone else playing that part as well as he did ,RIP from my happy childhood ,you were were a big happy part of it .
I could listen to him talk all day.. what a fantastic actor.. I absolutely loved Worzel as a child , and 40 years later I’m still just as enchanted . Sweet man and hilariously charming 💓
Was lucky enough to have met him in a pub in the late 80s. Absolutely lovely man and had a great chat. I so miss him as I was a fan of his since the Navy Lark. RIP you dear man and thank you for being a massive part of my childhood
Based on the times I've seen him in person, I think he could take for 24 hours straight about interesting things that happened in his life without ever repeating himself or boring any of his listeners.
After seeing him so many times breaking into Worzels voice sans make-up I find a strange sense of completion seeing him speaking with his own voice in full Gummidge garb
16:30 - the reason why no-one wanted to “take over” Worzel (at that time) is because the ITV company that made it - Southern - lost their ITV franchise in December 1980 to TVS, effective from January 1982. TVS had no interest in carrying on any Southern programmes. The show was offered to HTV in Cardiff and Anglia TV in Norwich, both of whom were interested but deals fell through…
What a tremendous voice he had and such a radiant personality. Worzel Gummidge was my favourite TV show as a little boy and now my son, the same age now as I was then absolutely loved the Mackenzie Crook version. I have to say Crook did a brilliant job also. Great cast. I don't mind telling you I was welling up a couple of times....
I think number one on that short list for Dr Who might have been Geoffrey Bayldon, who turned it down in favour of Catweazle, and thank god he did ...both were fantastic in their separate roles.
1:01 Jon Pertwee Also Played The Voice Of Spottyman In Superted The Original Series In 1983 And He Also Played The Third Doctor In Doctor Who. Thanks Mate. PS I've Didn't Know Worzel Gummidge Is Turned Into A Big West End Hit Musical In London's Glittering West End Before Bouibil And Schonberg's Miss Saigon And Les Miserables And Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom Of The Opera And Lin-Manuel Miranda And Cameron Mackintosh's Hamilton And Stephen Schwartz's Wicked And Lionel Bart's OLIVER And Ian Fleming's Chitty Chitty Bang Bang And Rodgers And Hammerstein's The Sound Of Music And Disney And Cameron Mackintosh's Mary Poppins And Andrew Lloyd Webber And Tim Rice's Joseph And The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat And Disney's Frozen And Roald Dahl's Charlie And The Chocolate Factory And Grease And Disney's Aladdin And Disney's Beauty And The Beast And Disney's The Lion King. Awesome. X
He did a great interview, even with such a talentless interviewer. Jon Pertwee had a voice of gold. Clearly, an intellect of platinum. And such a kind way of interacting with the interviewer. I grew up with Doctor Who from the late 60s (Patrick T) onwards. But if I were an actor, I’d really study Pertwee’s interviews because he could take a nothing interviewer and make the interview fascinating. Funny though, re: this interview, I have some family in Tooting Bec!
It looks strange when Jon speaks in normal while dressed as Worzel gummidge. Me and my stepdad loved the show growing up and he was my favourite doctor.
Me too, I don't think they could ever do anything to make me happy because we have already had the original experience. Now to the new generation, it's probably perfect.
Jon Petwee, was a very acomplished man, Naval Officer, Intelligence officer, actor , brilliant comic. He also had a very close call, he left HMS Hood , as she was steaming out of Scapa Flow to meet the Bismark and Prinz Eugen. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00bdjh3
Brilliant stuff I never liked Worzel Gummidge,I am a Catweazle man,but its lovely to see the great Jon Pertwee giving such a great interview he was a master Thespian to his bones. Thanks Colin for sharing. More from your wonderful archive please.
Correct. Geoffrey Bayldon had a recurring role as The Crowman. He and Pertwee played off each other very well, and Pertwee was unquestionably in his element.
That was shit in comparison to the first four original English series.... mainly because they replaced the excellent Geoffrey Bayldon as the Crowman. Also, there were no guest cast characters of the calibre and eccentricity that the original had such as Lorraine Chase, Bill Maynard, Joan Sims, Barbara Windsor, Bernard Cribbins, Mike Reid etc.
When Jon mentions how he was told he'd never make it surely the interviewer then asks "oh why?" not just plough on to the next question, I hate that one way interview style, btw Jon was in 3 not 2 Carry Ons as he states, the Sheriff in Cowboy, the Soothsayer in Cleo and the scientist in Screaming
"Mostly bit parts in Carry On films.." "No no... ...I was playing feature roles and leading roles in movies for some 10-12 years" ...ffs sake interviewer, do your fekking homework!
@Edmund Lumsden He might do, I thought he was just nervous. But as the above commenter said, the interviewer didn't seem to have done his research. I kind of cringed when he got his facts wrong!
This man was my childhood. Demons is one of my favourite all time shows. For the people who want to know Jon said the first pick for Doctor Who was an actor called Ron Moody on an Evening with Jon Pertwee. ua-cam.com/video/qd6tB29s4w4/v-deo.html
People outside of the USA will/may not have heard of him so....Richard "Red" Skelton was an American entertainer best known for his national radio and television shows between 1937 and 1971, especially as host of the television program The Red Skelton Show. Died: 17 September 1997 (age 84 years)
The interviewer clearly knows nothing about Jon Pertwee's role in Dr Who or any other of his achievements ..he's an embarrassment, Jon however, is brilliant. I'm fascinated by the 5/6 alternating timing of the theme music though :-)
Didn't like Jon's apparent disdain for his two Carry On appearances. He should have been grateful as they are still enormously popular today whilst the films he mentions that he was the leading man in, no one has ever heard of.
@@rnw2739 Whilst Carry On is popular with the audience (I love them). I’ve never heard any of the actors say that they loved them or thought they were particularly good.
A legend sadly missed. Rest well Jon
He was also lined up to play Captain Mannering in Dad’s Army
Best Dr Who actor of all... grew up on London watching and following his great acting.
JON PERTWEE,WAS THE BEST FOR WORZEL GUMMIDGE,WE MISS HIM .XXX

Yes John, as we have discovered this Christmas 2019, "No one else can play Worzel Gummidge", RIP
Worzel with his clever head on.
Bless you John fondly remembered,we used to sit crossed legged in front of tv watching Worzel Gummidge, loved it,I’m 51 now,and when I have a nostalgic thought now and again your always part of it.sadly missed,John and Worzel.
What sort of a host doesn't even offer old Worzel a nice cup of tea and a slice of cake

Pure genius, loved Worzel as a kid.
There may be many Doctors, but there can only ever be one Worzel.
what a man fab actor amazing human being
Sean Pertwee his son sounds exactly the same as his dear dad x
I had to get used to a one hundred percent polished and eloquently spoken Pertwee in full Worzel attire.

He's got his "posh speaking ead on " legend no one can touch Worzel.... none
Same: hard to get head around posh Worzel... loved his Worzel voice
😂me too, takes a while to adjust!
I loved this man as a child. Dr Who and Worzel great stuff
His son Shaun looks a lot like him , loved watching worzel gummidge as a kid , it was compulsive viewing !
Wouldn’t it be cool if his son was the doctor after the current one?
Compulsive but 'scary'¬
@@adelesteele2008 😅😅 So it wasn't just me then.

Didn't Worzel chuck the butler down Bloomsbury-Barton's coal cellar? Wangling aside, that was bang out of order !!
I grew up near the barns and used to love watching them film Worzul gummage, great memories.
The Great Jon Pertwee as Worzel and as the Doctor sadly soley missed RIP
Fantastic actor.
Very famous guy Jon Pertwee and he shock my hand Barry Proffitt. Rest in peace and sadly missed.
Loved Worzel Gummidge as a child, John is an amazing actor!

Wonderful opening scenes of London which took me back 40 years!
Love Jon pertwee genius RIP
I went to this, the theatre production. Great memories.
My first Doctor Who, 👍
12:22 - 12.24 is something I thought I’d never see.
Jon doing the interview in costume as Worzel is hilarious! XD
When I was a little kid. I remember being jealous of Sean Pertwee, because I WANTED TO BE WURZELS SON😂 God bless Mr Jon Pertwee.
he was the best cant beat him ,classic actor

Absolutely loved WG a character that was so so funny and went to the hearts of the country .

God the interviewer has as much enthusiasm questioning as me finding out I’ve got shit on the bottom of my shoe
i just came to detox myself from the new worzel gummidge
Tacsense oh grow up ....to a lot of people this is so outdated.....both are nothing like the book
ah well if it tried to copy him ,,,,
As John says in this interview, "No one else can play Worzel", how true !

Rubbish. They are both brilliant in their different ways.

Interesting interview, shame the interviewer sounded droll and really uninterested, Jon Pertwee the one and only Worzel Gummidge

Correct. Geoffrey Bayldon had a recurring role as The Crowman. He and Pertwee played off each other very well, and Pertwee was unquestionably in his element.

Ahh I wish he'd of stayed in character through out the interview I'd watch hours of that.
Amazing
Now I get why Baker said Pertwee was "easily teased", he must have seen this and picked up on "tripping over a long scarf" 😂
Dear Jon.
"Mostly bit parts in Carry On films.." "No no... ...I was playing feature roles and leading roles in movies for some 10-12 years" ...ffs sake interviewer, do your fekking homework!

Southern Television lost its franchise to TVS, eventually Worzel Gummidge was picked up by the tv network in New Zealand
I'm not keen on the recent Worzel he will always be unique. Been watching recently on a sky channel.
Who was the caveman played by john pertwee who used the phrase telling bone for telephone
You're thinking of Catweazle, which was an ITV series from 1970 he did not play that role
13:08 nope not wrong lol
He hasn’t made any effort for this interview. He could have showered at the very least.
No Italiano???
Shame he's not still around.
He looks a bit like Clem Kadiddlehopper. Red Skeleton character.

Little bit of triva, Pertwee had not yet been fitted for the Gummidge costume at this point. lol
The interviewer is terrible
The interviewer clearly knows nothing about Jon Pertwee's role in Dr Who or any other of his achievements ..he's an embarrassment, Jon however, is brilliant. I'm fascinated by the 5/6 alternating timing of the theme music though :-)
