- My son Jordan just got home from a six month deployment as a navy Corpsman attached to a Marine Unit and he has been wanting to build an overland vehicle of his own to join me on my adventures. In this video we introduce his new (used) 2015 Toyota Tacoma TRD off-road, we show you all the features, some of the things that need to be fixed and talk about what his plan is with the build such as wheel and tires, lift kit, rear bed cap, interior, bumpers and winch and more. #sandstonecanyon #toyotatacoma #overlandtruck

It is clear that you and your son are very close. My 12 year old son passed 3.5 years ago and I wish had the chance to share my knowledge with him ( Sam) like you are doing with your son. Thank you and your son for your service.
I don't get stuck on emotions, but just the thoughts of you and your son sharing a fun hobby and or lifestyle is great. I'm still waiting for my son to get back from Okinawa
(3 years ,second lieutenant) , so that we can get back with the hot rods ,and camping. Your son has grown to be a fine young man. Love you guys .. be safe have fun..
Thank you, I'm proud of all my boys and excited to get to turn wrenches with Jordan for this project. Hope your son returns home soon!
Very awesome. Looking forward to this build. I have a 2013 Baja tx tacoma set up for overland. I would recommend Bay Area metal fab for armor and skids. Beefy and awesome quality!
@@TrailRecon Someone posing as you left a reply on my comment offering a prize. It’s been my experience that Master Chiefs don’t use heart emoji’s. 😂
Nice! Toyotas representing! As an owner of 2 FJs and a 200 Land Cruiser, I am so happy to see this video. I can’t wait to see what mods you have planned for the truck.
More to come!
Same! I had a 77 BJ40 and now have a 68 FJ40, and an 80 Series. I've been hoping TrailRecon would get in the TLC game. Tacoma is a good gateway drug for that. :)
Yah. Toyotas are really underrepresented. 😂
Your son is a natural in front of the camera!
Thank you for your service.
Mixing sweet and savory is how great sandwiches are made. My fig jam, prosciutto, and fresh mozzarella on toasted sourdough kills it everytime I make it
Being a veteran of both Iraq and Afghanistan. I know the appreciation of the parents seeing their kid after deployment. So glad to see some of these kids serving their country. He's got a good rig. Love the Toyotas
Just want to say hi cuz we share last name and same first initial, also serving. 👋
@@Voltechs ok, hi
My father served 28 years in the Navy and I served 8 years in the Marines. Seeing you and your son together brings back old memories of returning home from deployment and spending time with my family. I have a Tacoma TRD Off-Road as well so I'm super glad to see it on one of my favorite offroading/overlanding channels! Semper Fi!
I've never owned a Toyota and most likely never will (love my Jeeps) but I've always respected their capabilities and dependability and I'm looking forward to the buildup. It's nice to see some variety on the channel and you guys always show very practical and usable modifications to every vehicle you build.
Good to see Jordan is back and safe !!! Hopefully my Marine Brothers were treating him good while he was out on that nice Pacific Cruise !!!! Nice Taco and with low miles to boot cannot wait to see what all yall have in store for the Taco !!! Amazing just how confident Jordan has become since the time he has joined the Navy and following in his parents footsteps.
Got to love how this channel sticks and stays true to just the love of off-roading and overlanding. Not all about the glitz and glam of the latest and greatest! I’ve got a ED Willys Wrangler, and my buddy’s got a Tacoma, we love getting after it on the trails together!
Thank you for your service and returning safely. You’ll LOVE the Tacoma!!
First if all, thank you both for your service. I have fond memories of my father and I wheeling in the 80s. We both had cj7s and we enjoyed the bond of camping and sitting around the fire at calico. I think he had more fun than rhe rest if us. Keep it up and thanks for the videos.
As a diehard Toyota guy I love this video. Love your videos and thanks for keeping an open mind Brad.
Just love the relationship with your sons and how you’ve passed on the passion for the outdoors! You and they are truly blessed
This is going to be fun to see. Thank you for your service, Jordan! Enjoy your time together.
I'm a Jeep guy but we used to have 2 tacomas at work as salesman trucks and I fell in love with them. The 2nd gen Tacomas are great. I'm excited to see this come together.
Yes on the canberry sauce. It's a must on the sandwich.
Recommendation for storage as someone with the same gen. I put in a Front Runner footwell water tank, and then took out the bottom cushions of the back seat and used those mounting brackets for a sheet of plywood for a dog platform. The water tank is able to support the weight, and it centrally locates the water, which weights 85 lbs. Best part is I can easily swap the cushions back in and in 5 minutes I can take 4 passengers again.
Great to see your son back safe and sound, #1 to Tacoma, so many aftermarket parts to upgrade. 3 rd gen OR owner here
I just love this. It's wonderful to see you get to work on a project with your son and share your adventures. Treasure every moment of this time with your family. Thanks for sharing and we're excited to follow along!
Thank you for your service guys! I work in fleet for lacounty fire, and we have Tacoma for our lifeguard rigs. The mudflaps removed themselves on most of the trucks soon after hitting the sand! As for the seats, they make really nice gor tex material seat covers that just slip on and fit nice. They keep the seats clean, and add just a bit more cushion. Look forward to following the build!
Welcome home Jordan! I am so happy for you both getting to spend time together doing something you both clearly love. I’m not a Toyota guy but I’m excited to see the build on your new to you Tacoma. I love that you’re planning a moderate build and are really thinking it through. I just had my son home from the Air Force for Thanksgiving weekend as well, so I know the feeling of the long awaited homecomings! Thanks for your service! God bless.
I’ve been watching this channel for a while now and always loved it but As the owner of a second generation Tacoma I’m super excited to see you you guys have planned! Thank you for your service as well 🫡
Congrats on the 2nd Gen! Welcome to the the Taco family Jordan!
What an awesome video once again ! Great father son interaction and so comfortable in conversation !! Cant wait to see how this truck comes around to how Jordan wants it built . Be safe and take care !
2nd gen Tacoma owner here. I’ve been a subscriber for years so it’s cool to finally see my truck on the channel!
Welcome home, Jordan - thank you for your service and have fun with the new rig! Excited to follow along!
Very nice. I can't wait to help my son set up his first rig when he's older too.
I hope Jordan realizes how blessed he is to have a dad that is stoked on his new truck, and with Dad's KC connection!!🤙🏽
I would HIGHLY recommend King suspension...Ive had them on my last two rigs and they are absolutely incredible. Something about King and Toyota just go together like peanut butter and jelly!
As an owner of leaky ICON's, I fully support this comment.
What an amazing experience to share with your child. Can't wait to see how the build turns out. Welcome to the Taco World!
Perfect T-day sandwich: Turkey, stuffing, a little gravy, mayo, and cranberry sauce. Good stuff!
Cranberry sauce on the Thanksgiving sammich, every time ;) But awesome to see that your son has returned safely from deployment. Happy (belated) veterans day to you both and look forward to see the transformation of this Tacoma. Almost bought this same truck last month, but ended up going with a 2020 Gladiator instead to get some of the modern amenities my wife wanted (heated seats, land departure warning, etc).
I really liked the way y'all discussed it in stages and what goals to be accomplished stage by stage. Good ideas too.
Anxious to see how it develops. Yall take care.
Thank you for your service. Enjoy your new truck and the work you are going to be doing to it. Greatly enjoy watching your family doing the outdoors together. God bless you all.
Welcome home Jordan. It’s nice to see he’s more interactive in the video. Y’all keep up the good work.
Yes! Finally, been waiting for it. This will diversify the content. I agree with Jordan on pretty much every thing. Cloth seats @💯%, 2.5 inch lift and chrome delete etc. please post full length videos of the build. Thanks
First time seeing you with your son. What a blast. Thank you both for your service.
Congrats 🎊can’t wait to watch the new build. Glad your home for a while. Best of luck. 👍🔥💙
As a Toyota fan, and a fan of the channel this entire video made me smile while watching. Congrats Jordan! & Welcome to the Toyota family! Can’t wait to see the progress, and hey it might encourage dad to take a peak at a Toyota project.
Congrats on the new whip Jordan. Can’t wait to see what you and your pops do to that bad boy. Also welcome back from deployment and Thank You for your service. 🇺🇸
Owner of a Gen3 Tacoma 4x4 here and love the truck, you will like your Tacoma the more miles you put on it , great addition to the channel , looking forward to the build . Thank you both for your services GREATLY appreciate it 🇺🇸 .
This 2015 is a workhorse! I had a 2014 that was unbelievable! I can hardly wait to watch this build!
Great video, Brad! As an FJ Cruiser owner I can’t wait to see how your son’s Tacoma turns out. Should be a fun build and thank you for your service!
Welcome to the Toyota-side Jordan! You’re gonna love it.
Loving it so far!
That’s awesome. Father and son bonding on the trails
Welcome home! Thanks for your service. Yota looks great it will be good to see your upgrades.
Toyotas never ger stuck!!! Love mine.
Can't wait to see the progress 🤘
welcome back Jordan thanks from a vet myself, to your father thanks to you too.
the build will be fun to watch it all happen.
spend 10 years as a PMC/S.OP myself.
I know being away from home for very long periods of time.
so you guys have fun with your hobbies to re anchor ones mindset..
for ideas to your build..
35 tires
rock wheels with bead locks
I go on but it is your budget for this build..
I’ve went through so many vehicles before my Jeep. Nothing like learning new platforms! Hyped to check this out!
@trailrecon I’m so excited to see this build play out. It seems it will go back to the roots of your channel and back to the days of building the XJ with your boys. I can’t wait to watch this series.
Happy for you!! I’m looking forward to watching you build it out the way you want.
Love it - I'm thinking about adding an Offroad to the inventory! Happy to hear TR will be leading the way!
Thank you for your service! I look forward on watching you guys build the taco!
I just bought a 2012 Tacoma this past week! I was stoked when I saw this. I’m excited to follow along with the build! Cheers
Been following you (that sounds wrong) for quite awhile now. From my knothole, you are setting a great example…. coaching, teaching, and living right… not only for your family but also to a heck of a lot of others. Hat off to you, Brad.
I’m looking forward to my perfect cup of coffee in the morning!
Welcome back home Jordan! And thank you both for serving our country.
long time subscriber, hardy post any comment but first, Thank you guys for your service, its good to see our service men back home safe from deployment. I am Toyota guy own 3 of therm , 2015 Taco dbl cab 4x4x non e-locker :( 1 gen taco double cab TRD not 4x4 ( in progress of conversion) and my 3rd gen 4runner limited witch is my pride a joy overland truck. Llove all the content but cant wait for the new Toyota stuff. happy trails 🙂
Can't wait to see this build overland truck will be nice. Stay safe and happy holidays and thank you for your service.
Stoked for this one Guys!!🤙
Excited to see how this goes. As a owner of a 2015 tacoma I'm excited to follow this build along...finally a reason to watch your channel! Thank you both for your service to our country and welcome home Jordan! Also like to see some airbag install since I'm interested in that for my taco. Thanks
Awesome to see a Toyota on the channel!
Good to see this legendary truck making it into the fleet! Awesome!
Oh I'm so excited to see a Tacoma enter this page. I've owned both a Jeep and a Tacoma and they each have their own purpose. It'll be a great series to see the crossover between the two!
Welcome back Jordan! Thank you for your service. So pumped to have you back and a new rig to work on. Definitely the cranberry on the sandwich for the ultimate leftover. Can't wait to see all the upgrades you will do!
Thank you! Super excited for it, but definitely no cranberry lol!
@@jordankowitz I get it.
Thank your son for serving our country and good content on potential upgrades
Way to go Jordan! A wise choice. Have fun upgrading your already very capable Tacoma. The 2015 is one of the best years Toyota made.
Thanks Brad for your wonderful content. Most enjoyable!
Yes Jordan!! Nice to see father and Son working in kool project like this!! Of course go #teamtaco!!! This is one built in not going to miss!! Happy trail🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
Might be your best video yet!
Your son is very cool. His ideas are mature and on point.
Everyone whines about Tacomas being uncomfortable for tall people. Yet at 6'4" he's comfortable. And he's right because at 6'10" I'm comfortable!
2 1/2 inch lift and 33s is perfect.
I just did all the Colorado passes including Black Bear and many in Utah including the White Rim. Zero issues.
Even the idea of not putting the duel battery under the hood is on point. Put it in the back.
I'm going to enjoy watching this progression.
Looking forward to this build! Love the videos!
Can’t beat a Toyota’s reliability! Smart man!
What could be better than family time with a new project. Thank you for sharing a great video.
Great job on the new pickup and I’m glad to see Jordan back on the channel. I think y’all should take a look at the Moonlander from Radica. I actually have one on order for my Frontier. It’s a truck cap or topper/camper that actually allows you to sleep width wise over the bed rails which helps with 5’ truck beds.
Congratulations 🎉
I own a 2014 TRD Off Road Limited Package
I Love my Taco
My husband is 6’6” he finds it uncomfortable to drive
He’s too tall!!
Basically his line of vision hits the sun visor !
Glad it works for ur son
Can’t wait to see the transformation!
Gives me some ideas :)
Glad to see you back from your WestPac deployment. I was an MM2, USN, '71-'75, USS Pyro AE-24 in the Tonkin Gulf, Yankee Station. Welcome Home and have some fun doc.
I love Tacomas. Can't wait to follow this one.
Awesome guys! Can’t wait to see the final version!
I'm a Jeep guy, but my son just bought a Tacoma, so I'm excited to see you build this out. Great addition to the program!
This is AWESOME! I just picked up a 2014 that is the cleanest used truck i ever bought. Cant wait to see what your do.
This is great to see a father and son sharing the passion of overland and the outdoors together, something i never had in my life let alone a father. Tacoma's are great trucks and very reliable. i am looking into getting a 16 TRD offroad myself, after being a jeep guy for so long there two different machines but in very good ways Enjoy, Merry xmas and happy holidays to you and your family!
Solid and glad you all have finally entered into the Toyota trail space. Congrats and fairwinds🙌🏾. I would strongly recommend Dirt King Hiem jointed UCA/ Lower control arm(increases caster with a quick weld of each side of the cam tab seams). And a front locker. And a set of King’s 2.5 F/R shocks and take your leaf pack to Vector Springs in SD for a rebuild with exact height spec/and load. Small unknown shop with unparalleled quality leaf packs customization for a third of what a set of Deavers would be😉. And Toyotas break in at 200k😂😂
First and foremost, thank you for your service. Also very excited to see some Toyota content finally! Love your content but I'm a Toyota guy myself.
A Toyota!! I love it! Super excited for this channel chapter. I just traded in my 3rd Gen Tacoma for the new Tundra but absolutely loved the Tacoma.
Jordan thank you for your service and looking forward to seeing you more in the future. JR
Awesome! Excited to follow this build!
My tips (from my 2020 Tacoma DCSB build) for saving weight: a Gazelle T3X fits perfectly end-to-end in the back of the bed with just one or two inches to spare; a soft topper won't give you a support structure for holding items like traction boards or fuel, but it's super light (you can also buy racks that can fit over them which gives you cover and a rack for less than the weight of an aluminum topper); aluminum skid plates are a must, at least for the oil pan; can't avoid steel sliders and they'll be over 200lbs so removing those rear seats is a great idea; a 13 gallon wheel well water tank from somewhere like Ironman 4x4 first perfectly in the bed and it keeps the water weight fairly low and centralized.
Same lift and build setup I did with my taco, right on!
I’m excited for the Tacoma build!
Great job on the video guys! Thanks for making it.
My son (3rd generation Army) just got back from Korea a couple of months ago and is now at Ft. Carson, CO. He looked at a Tacoma when he got back but settled on a Chevy Colorado. The Tacoma we looked at just didn't ride as well. He's looking forward to "upgrading" his truck and experiencing CO.
BTW, a cranberry/mayo spread on a leftover turkey sandwich is FANTASTIC!!!!
Neato! I'm glad to see you both together and going on an adventure. It came down to a coin toss for me between a TRD and a wrangler at one point. Can't wait to see what y'all do to it. All the love to y'all
Cloth here.
Durable seat cover.
Love the roots vibes.
Real off-road enthusiasts aren't partial.
Oh man I am super excited for this build! I was in the exact same situation. I had a 2005 Jeep tj rubicon, 1 hour commute one way to work, and lifted 4” on 33s. It’s not impossible, but it’s work getting that little wheelbase Jeep down the interstate.
Ended up with a stock 2022 TRD offroad tacoma with the exact same mindset as this build. Solid, useable, not over the top daily driver/ dual purpose rig.
Oorah!! Great that you’re back home!
Awesome video, like always. Love the Taco... Can't wait for the build videos. And you'll love taking it through Colorado.
Love the father n son build. Looking forward to doing the same with my HM3 when he gets back. Thank you both for your service 🇺🇸 ⚓️
I think this is awesome. I, personally, own a 2015 TRD Pro as well as a 2021 JTDR. I love that you guys are bringing on a Tacoma into the channel.
To compare my two trucks against themselves would be disingenuous. They are two completely different truck, in soo many ways.
I look forward to this new content.
Congrats on the new project!!
I’m a Ower of a 22 Toyota 4Runner I’m excited to see this project can’t wait💪🏻💯💥
I enjoy your channel, your positive energy is awesome. And now even more positive is that young man buying a Toyota, congratulations !
