      @Viper the Avali You're talking about gold! My uncle was serving in 1990s Afghanistan in a US Army base there, and someone got him to sell scrap material that the superiors had ordered to "get out of here".
      He went on a month-long vacation after that (pre-planned, not like *that*) and when he returned, some people practically held him ransom till he returned the money he got for the scrap. Unfortunately he had put the money toward a house, so some of his relatives here had to help him raise the money and we somehow got him home.
      Greed goes before a fall.

    Ugh, the lady asking to “be friends.” I know that one. This is the type of scam my grandmother fell for. A guy got her to exchange personal information, feigned interest in her and said they were of similar faith and ideals. All of it led to him coming into financial trouble and asking her to pay for his ticket so that they could meet. I am so incredibly thankful that this happened around the time that she was moving in with my parents, because she gushed about it to my dad and he immediately smelled a rat.

    Thank you so much for doing this. Those cretins are despicable.
    Last year I was in love (Yes, IN LOVE) with a military romance scammer. Preying upon the vulnerable and lonely. Its spelling and grammar was impeccable (American spellings though), and it texted me every morning and night on WhatsApp. Claimed to be, like your "Susan" an orphan (hooked by compassion) but a Marine Engineer off the coast of Ireland. Asked several times for photos of me but I'm an artist with an absurd sense of humour so no selfie could be used for ID, although it might have lifted my profile pic off the online dating app POF where I met it. After several weeks my birthday conveniently came round and it asked for my details to send me a gift. It already had my phone number and email. It sent me a pic of a dispatch note. "Number of peaces" on a proforma used by an international courier service. At last my alarm bells rang. I Google searched Tranx Logistics and although there is a real one, its name is used by scammers. Police pointed me to Action Fraud.
    I had an email asking for $500 USD fee to release the package through customs. Western Union Bank.
    I self-harmed after being clean 3 years, and was suicidal but thankfully have an awesome community mental health team. It has messed with my bipolar disorder, and I've been unstable for over a year and only stabilised well 3 weeks ago.
    Again, and in "shouty caps" THANK YOU!

    • @AtomicShrimp
      @AtomicShrimp  4 роки тому +3

      What a sobering account. And this is the hidden evil of these scams - they prey on the most vulnerable targets.
      I am glad to hear you are recovering from this and I hope that continues. If I have one thing to say to you it's this: Do not blame yourself for what happened; blame is no more appropriate here than it would be for people who are randomly attacked by animals.
      Stay well and stay strong. Thank you for sharing.

    • @pennyflowers8027
      @pennyflowers8027 4 роки тому +3

      @@AtomicShrimp Thank you. Yes, I'm recovering. In your video "How low can they go?" I realised it's not just my scammer who is utterly heartless. I was in love. I told "him" about being raped as a child and how my self-loathing made me seek BDSM relationships but I have learned through therapy someone who loves you doesn't want to hurt you, and that I have failed at suicide twice. No moral compass, it just kept up the romantic platitudes and heartf**k&headf**k scam.
      I don't feel bad for being gullible. I'm proud that I value TRUTH and HONESTY, so what if it means I never suspect lies or deceit in others. Trying to be suspicious and cautious is hard work, but necessary in this world.
      Thank you for educating people about scammers Atomic Shrimp. You're AWESOME!
