Early-ice walleyes on Upper Red Lake (tough-bite tricks)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
- And so it begins! 🥶 Made the trek up to Upper Red Lake in northern MN earlier this week, and was able to knock the dust off and lean into some shallow-water waldos.
BUT in case you didn’t know…. 👀
Even if you’re on a walleye factory like Upper Red Lake, walleyes are still walleyes…they can still get fussy and turn off. The old “should’ve been here yesterday” saying, am I right?! The fish always seem a little funky the first week-ish after the lake locks-up....
Anyone can catch ‘em when they’re snapping, but what do you do if they’re not…? This video breaks down a few tricks I use to get those fussy buggers to bite when the going gets tough(er). Hope it helps!
Thx much for watching! Have a great + safe hardwater season!!

ohhhh yea !
Are you saying that when your dead sticking you put the split shot on the bottom of the lake and let the minnow swim up or are you saying you keep the minnow about 6" from the bottom and the split shot 6" above that?
Had a great first week on Red... been fishing it for years and there is a tactic to it... long walks are almost always worth it and if it doesn’t make noise you might as well not even use it.
No doubt!
We caught fish from sun up to sun down days was the best bite it depends where you go out of
Good catch sir and commentary as well thankyou.
Great tips, It was a tough bite for me too...I'm waiting on LOTW
Yup, that sounds like a blast right about now! Thx for watching man!
Why don’t you target Deez nuts Brett
That's aggressive 🥴
I’m new to this, on your lure why just the fish head if you do not use the body? Scent?
More scent with it pinched off. And keeps a compact profile so when they hit it, you know they've got the hook. I use full minnows when deadsticking, but if I'm actively jigging, I'm the one putting all of the action into the spoon. Thx for watching!
@@TargetWalleye thanks for all the answers and advice. I appreciate it.
@@jjmcg9688 absolutely any time! Appreciate you taking time out of your day to watch it. 👊
I was there yesterday I sat in 8' of water for 4 hours caught 4 missed 4!!
Sounds right on par with what I had heard from most folks. The funny thing is on most "average" lakes around me, that would be an absolute dynamite day! But on URL folks' expectations are a little skewed as to what a good day of walleye fishing is haha...they think if they don't catch 30-50 fish for the group that they struck out, but tough bites happen on any and all fisheries. Glad you were able to get out and set the hook a few times! I literally said after the first hookset that I'd be happy going home lol.
We were up there the same weekend out of JRs and we crushed it. We fished from 7am to 5pm each day and just hammered them. I caught 14 the first day and 16 on the second day and my buddy did just as well. We brought home our limit each day.
That's awesome! Nice work!! I heard it was snapping pretty dang good on Saturday and then a little slower on Sunday? We got up there just before sunset on Monday night, then had to head back early-afternoon on Tuesday. Super quick trip but always worth it.
@@TargetWalleye yeah we were up on Saturday and Sunday. We arrived at 6:30am on Sat morning and went straight to fishing lol. We did notice the best bite window being from 7am to 11am then it got slow and we would only pick off a few every hour or so.

There probably aren't too many ice fishing people who haven't experienced that lull in the action. But that sun up and sun set times of day may be your only hour of opportunity. The snow accumulations won't help the ice much. Good video from Upper Red! Thanks for sharing the pain. ;)
Thx Timmy! 👊
What is the brand of the bobber you were using? Great tips on moving and when to do it.
Thanks much! And that bobber is made by JB Lures - it's their 10″ Lighted Fire Float (small). Super fun!

@@TargetWalleye appreciate the response, will have to look for them. Got a killer night bite spot I can sit in the camper and watch bobbers with those instead of running tip-ups
those bobbers are cool! great vid with good advice
Thx Bob!
We had a tough bite ws well. That's fishing though.
Makes ya big-time appreciate the days where things line up! 👊
@@TargetWalleye yes it does.
I know this is an older video, but hopefully you'll see this comment. I fish walleyes on the Mississippi a lot here in SW Wisconsin. A lot of time, I'm fishing current which pretty much limits my presentation to heavier jigging raps. The walleyes like them, but when they don't, I'm pretty much SOL. I was just wondering if you have any experience fishing rivers through the ice or if you have any tips or suggestions. Thanks a lot. Love the content
Thanks for watching and dropping a comment, Andrew! Honestly my experience fishing rivers thru the ice is very, very limited. Really only done it a handful of times. That was always the difficult part for me too - would have to drill a separate hole up current for the flasher to try and see even heavy baits since the current drags the presentation back. My one experience with a tougher bite in current like that, we ended up tying on really heavy ReelBait Flasher Jigs with a minnow and they saved the day for us. Used something called "Bait Buttons" to keep the minnows from falling off in the current. Worked wonders.
Awesome tips keep up the good videos and be safe!!! Tight lines!!!
Really appreciate it! And you as well 👊
music to my ears when that traffic goes back in end of day. most people don't wanna sit out until dark to grind
Right?! 🤣👊 It slows down but there's always a second window if you're willing to stay late.
Was there Mon-Tue toughest bite I’ve ever had up there. Tried a million different baits only to catch a few fish
That's when this was shot. Got there Monday about 3:30-ish for the evening bite. Then did a quick half day the next day before heading home 'cuz I had some "adulting" to do haha. Glad you were able to get out and set the hook some tho!
We did last friday to today we just smashed them in 6 ft of water i got 75 fish in all
What simms jacket is that? I’ve been looking into getting one myself. What do you think of it?
That's the original Simms Challenger Insulated Jacket and Bibs - got 'em when they first came out a few years back. Absolutely love it still! SO comfortable, warm and insanely light. I’m kind of a geek about stuff, so of course I weighed it 🤣 and was shocked my 3XL Simms suit weighs 4 lbs less [!] than my other suits. Isn't that wild?! Of course it doesn’t have the “floating” properties of some of the other hardwater suits, but there’s a time and a place for each…. Haven't tried the newest generation of this suit because I haven't needed to, but will have to try one out one day. I added links to them in the video's description now in case anyone else was curious what they were. Thx for watching and reaching out!
@@TargetWalleye thanks for the reply! I’m kind of a geek about my stuff too lol I like to really research stuff before I pull the trigger.
@@eastonsoular2425 any time man! And you've gotta with how many options there are out there for everything.
I’ve seen people use the 360 on ice. What do you think?
I don't own one (yet) but have seen them in action. It's really REALLY cool for seeing how the structure lays out in an area and finding the "spot on the spot" as fish are rolling thru.
@@TargetWalleye I have one on the boat, debating if I want to get the attachments on the ice. My first year Ice fishing.
@@jjmcg9688 definitely has a learning curve but I don't think you'd regret it. Here's a write-up I did with Brad Hawthorne last year talking 360: targetwalleye.com/hunting-early-ice-walleyes-with-brad-hawthorne/
No smitty?
There was virtually no snow on the ice so didn't even need it. The sled basically pulled itself. Will definitely be busting out the skis when it gets the first coating tho. Crazy how big of a difference it makes.
@@TargetWalleye I’m building one right now. Cool concept
@@jjmcg9688 that's half the fun! But it is mind-blowing how much easier they pull in pretty deep snow.
