ikr, how did they do that! Characters in movies usually need to express their love verbally to each other - how else would the viewer otherwise know? But in this movie they somehow did it. I just can't wrap my heard around it :o

A number of people in the comments below talk about the strong emotion this scene evokes in them and at least one person says this scene brought him/her to tears. I've come back to this scene several times and it has made my cry each time. It's a bit mysterious to me why I have this reaction to a film that seems more whimsical than anything else, but there it is. A factor in my reaction is that I'm reminded of a bit of personal history. This scene was shot at the passenger ship terminal on the west side of Manhattan, west of Hell's Kitchen. When I see the skyline behind Margot, I'm reminded of a woman who lived not too far away from here, who had a very difficult life and with whom I had a relationship that ended quite painfully for me. But I never really thought this little bit of personal history was the reason for my reaction, and the comments I've read below sort of confirm that for me.

My Margot and I eventually hooked up briefly, after years of watching her with other men, but the weight of the baggage we both had made it end very quickly. We each moved on, married other people, but deep down, I think she always thought we’d be together, and I think I did, too. She tried once, but I was still with my wife, so I declined.. she died a few years ago of an overdose. Not a day goes by I don’t think about her, and what could’ve been, in another life. I miss you, Jen, I’m sorry I wasn’t there for you when you needed me the most..

I haven’t seen him in over 2 years, we grew up together and both moved away, our relationship had always been… complicated. It was his 21st birthday party that I had been invited to that I didn’t know was his birthday party. It was the dead of winter. I showed up and opened the door and I immediately locked eyes with him from down the hall. My stomach dropped and I could feel the cold sweat on my hands. No need to get into the long complicated drama that would result in that night, but this scene, this is what it felt like exactly. I don’t regret it, but it still hurts. You only find true love once it seems.
