Welcome to Malaysia, a wonderful country sandwiched between the 'too fun too free' Thailand and the 'too strict too controlled' Singapore. Dont read the comments of narrow minded people in this comment section, we are a nation of friendly people, alwayd willing to help foreigners, lovely combination of Malay, Indian, Iban, Singh, Kadazan, Baba Nyonya, and Chinese culture (and more but i cant name all, we have ethnic Thais and ethnic Philippino and many other races too in Malaysia). We have absolutrly zero natural disasters, great beaches, wonderful forest reserves, great street food, mega malls, low housing costs and great healthcare. Move here everyone! Welcome again to Malaysia, Truly Asia!
I love my country! Cintaimu Malaysiaku

in malaysia, gays get whipped and jailed, insulting the monarchy is a prison sentence, in the trains even signs show kissing is illegal, Police are allowed to raid ur hotel room without any permit to arrest if unmarried couples occupy the same room, child marriages constantly happen, no human rights country should never be allowed to get rich

just use Dayak instead of Iban. it comprises all the ethnic groups like Iban. it is a wonderful country to live in but don't deny the corruption happening in this country for the past few years which led to some underdevelopment to some states like Sarawak compared to Kuala Lumpur.

I'm right now in Kuala Lumpur as a digital nomad. My first time in Malaysia. I like this place! I see that the country is developing fast. Malaysia is very foreign friendly, they talk english and i feel like they are more extroverted and talkative than Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. Is easier to make local friends here as a foreigner in my point of view. Also the condos are amazing and for my budget i can have a better life here than Bangkok. Of course, if you are searching for "fun" (weed, girls, crazy party scene and drinking buddies) Thailand would be the better choice. Malaysia is a muslim country so don't expect it to be like the neighbours of the north. If you searching for a chill country where you can integrate and you are searching for something more "autentic", Malaysia can surprise you in a good way.

Those who are negative, well, you know negativity is passed down generationally so I could only pity the children. They will grow up and wonder why the rest are doing better but not their family. Kids, look at your parents and ask them what they did with their lives with what they could (but didn't, and instead blaming others) and ask them what could they possibly give to you with all that negativity (except despair)

Despite that Sarawak still requires semenanjung civil servants to fill positions in your cities snd towns and kampungs while at the same time shouting Sarawak for Sarawakians. I’m one of those civil servants who was sent to Sri Aman and encountered racism from Sarawakian superiors just because I came from Terengganu. Glad that I’m out of that place. Sarawakians often boast that they are not racists like Malayans, but in truth they are just as racist if not more especially to people from East Coast. My friend who served in Sarikei faced the same, even the family of the girl he was interested in insulted his family and his background (also from Terengganu). These all happened recently showing how closed minded Sarawakians are even today.
Edit: there’s a comment below that tells us Malayans to go back to semenanjung because Sarawakians don’t need us anyway. You really know nothing don’t you? The hospital I was working in Sri Aman up until November last year, 90% of the doctors including me were from semenanjung. The situation in Sarikei was the same. In Saratok all but one doctor was from semenanjung. Even in yor largest cities, up to 30-50% of the doctors in your biggest public hospitals are from semenanjung, if not more.

1)so far the rank 2nd politically stability after Singapore in SEA.
2)not too free, not too strict.
    3)no war
4)Yes there are corruption, but we are not wild wild west/east.

5)Malaysian appreciate stability and peaceful life, everyone make money and everyone happy
    6)advance facility in SEA
7)yes we got traffic jam, but our traffic still can move😂
8)advance medical sector, therefore good for medical tourism
    9)many beautiful mountains
10)we are multilingual nation, therefore u wont feel lost when in our country

lack of focus on R&D is probably the single most crucial factor in STEM sectors in Malaysia. Ever since independence, overreliance on mining, oil and gas and agricultural sectors has caused disproportionate allocation of monetary, human capital and education resources to these sectors. We did not have a robust governance framework over tech industry, lack of local tech player/pioneer and low margin high volume downstream sector. In education, electronics/ computers/ physical science were deemed less prestigious compare to law or medicine by the parent, causing most of the straight As students find tech sectors less appealing. Even those who were academically trained in pure sciences find in hard to find a job and resorted to migrate to to other countries
As the result, our tech sector is as mediocre as it is, without any spirit of innovation and a mere user rather than a entrepreneur of the industry. Insha'Allah in the recent years, thing have changed slowly but surely. Hopefully we can have a titan conglomerate akin to TSMC, samsung etc.

You seem pretty into secularism, huh? But have you thought about what's happened to other countries that went that route? It hasn't always worked out so well for their national identity and values. Look at Malaysia, though. They held onto their traditions and religious stuff, and it helped them resist colonialism. The actual problem in Malaysia is poor political system that endorsed incompetency not the national value.

@@araohollow16 I don't exactly know any examples of religion helping out a country, so i won't say anything about that. the only thing i can say is that Malaysia is stagnated because so many of the discussions in parliament focused on are whether it preserves Muslim and Malay cultures and values rather than actually advancing the country. The only thing religion did for our colonialism was Malaysia (and by extension Singapore) not turning into a christian country which you could argue was better or worse (FYI the people were against turning Malaysia into a religious country, the government just never listened. Just like today where they continue to ignore what the Chinese and Indians say when it comes to politics), point is it really didn't do anything for us because resisting colonialism is not a religion thing, it's a "we do not want to be oppressed thing". also i agree that endorsing incompetency is definitely a big issue, but i also feel like said incompetency also includes them valuing religion way too much, like A LOT of vernacular schools here are very biased against the Chinese and Indian students lmao, i know because I've been to different schools in different states and faced the same treatment.

@@skyisthela I totally get where you're coming from as a Filipino born in Malaysia, especially being a citizen without bumiputera privileges. While religion might not seem like a big player in resisting colonialism, it's worth noting that even small things can add up. Sometimes, those little things can spark something much bigger and lead to real change. For instance, religion plays a significant role in Malay society by helping preserve cultural identity through the reflection of community traditions and values. It fosters support among individuals, creating a strong sense of unity focused on a common purpose while resisting foreign ideologies that might corrupt these values. This is something we both aware as a main tactic used by the British in previous centuries, which instilled feelings of inferiority complex within the colonized community and encouraged them to adopt different beliefs or system that solely benefits the British. I acknowledge that some Malay politicians today misuse religion to further their personal agendas, claiming to preserve Malay culture while neglecting more pressing issues. However, this represents just a small part of the overall Malaysian political landscape and rarely has any significant impacts on the welfare of other races. If that were true, non-bumiputera communities would dominate several key statistics related to poverty, homelessness, lack of education, and unemployment. Having lived and traveled across various countries on different continents, I can assure you that we are far from the most extreme cases of racial bias. In fact, our situation reflects a more nuanced and balanced approach compared to many other places such as the western countries which often depicted themselves as the pinnacle of human civilization. In conclusion, while religion may not serve as the foremost factor in resisting colonialism, it undeniably wields considerable influence in that context. Provided it does not incite racially motivated violence or infringe upon fundamental citizens' rights, it can foster conditions that are both viable and conducive to harmonious coexistence.

Never ending NEP policy that never benefit the intended bumiputera for years but the elites, giving them excuse to run it forever because the intended target group made to be still below par because the government are spoon feeding money to them. I wonder if they really want to get out from poverty when they are fed to the brim.
There is a study that shows affirmitive economic action breeds incompetency. This is normally to boost the minority on fairplay opportunity. The funny thing is, this is done on the majority instead in Malaysia and we are heading to a double digit NEP. Malaysia is a good case study why we are still behind our neighbours.
The elites that are benefitting from the NEP and are storing their wealth overseas leaving incompetent government servant governing the country.
It is for the Majority of Malaysia to realise that they have been used, not the minority as we have been stereotyped since independence, and if they still stick to the quota system and NEP as an excuse, it will suck them into the blackhole of incompetency and lack of intelligence. Singapore was the favourite child of the British. The British developed it to become one of the richest ports and financial centre in the World. So during independence, Singapore was economically far ahead compared to mainland Malaysia.

During the 90s Dr M went on approving of many mega 'cronism/nepotism' projects which resulted billions in losses. During 90s Malaysia was seen as a robust country but how can it be, Malaysia was losing billions every month tru those cronies projects. If not for Anwar Ibrahim then the Finance Minister, who spent sleepless night, thinking of way to adjusting the losses. Big boss just went round digging holes and it was poor Anwar who is sweating all over ... refilling the holes.
During the 90s. Malaysia had almost zero debt and when Dr M put Anwar to jail and sit as the Finance minister, the debt was seen piling up and up. The rest is self explanatory.

Yeah, also it was under Anwar that interest rate (OPR) was raised up to 12 percent and resulting many companies faced bankruptcies. Many workers were fired, and unemployment shot up to the roof. Anwar also wants to accept the IMF packages which will further destroy Malaysia's economy. As the sole country which did not accept IMF loan, Malaysia recovered relative quickly compared to its neighbors. Malaysian debt is always denominated in Ringgit and foreign currency debt is kept at minimum, no more 5% of the GDP. It's not the amount of debt you should be concerned, it's about the sustainability. Singapore debt to GDP ratio is 168% and Japan is 200%, but yet they are doing well. Our current account is always on surplus and foreign reserves are sufficient for at least 6-7 months of import. The general rule is foreign reserves should be minimum 3 months' worth of imports to be sustainable. Malaysia's' management of its macroeconomic sectors are prudent enough. Read IMF Article IV about Malaysia. There you can see our current economic status.
