Just wanted to drop by and leave a massive thank you for answering my question. I really appreciate it! I already listened to the podcast version a few weeks ago in my car. I found it extremely helpful, actionable and spot-on. I absolutely agree - no product or brand is worth risking our integrity or trustworthiness.
Thanks for the vid Bo! As a content creator on Chinese social media and someone who has done plenty of advertising for companies, including bag brands like Bellroy, I can tell you that having the kind of standards that you have Bo, it would be VERY hard to be successful working with brands. The problem with your attitude towards it is that these are companies.. they don't care about anything except money.. simple as that. I totally agree with everything you said - I think your attitude is great... but I don't think it'll lead to success when it comes to working with brands UNLESS you're a massive channel and THEN you have a huge amount of power and the brands want to work with you really badly regardless of whether you say good or bad things about their product because at the end of the day for them: big exposure whether good or bad, is generally good for the brand. Just my 2c - you're a legend Bo.
Thanks for commenting. I get what you are saying. But there is a difference betweeen "advertising" and "review". If it just came down to ads my stance would not be working with brands. But if it is a paid job these TOC would be different. THis is just in regards to reviews and I have been proof for many years that this TOC is working. With all of the reviews on this channel the brands have agreed to my TOC. I think as long as the brand is looking for a review and they trust their products then they are more likely to agree to these terms because most acknowledge that a trustworthy review does have some value. That being said: I do agree that this type of TOC is much more difficult to work with with brands. If you are a smaller creator this will be much more difficult. I understand that, but I actually made these TOC when my channel had about 20k subscribers. Still a high number, but not as high in the grand scheme of things. I guess what I try to communicate to smaller creators is: The item that you receive does not cover all of the work that you put into it. Therefore it is important to have some values and morals in place so that you don't shill for the brand that sent you the item. Mak an unbiased and balanced review and clearly communicate what you want to do. And then in the long run put some toc in writing to secure your standing. Hope that makes sense Thanks for your constructive comment and watching my videos!
@@Youknowthebo My pleasure Bo. Yeah I totally agree with your way of doing things and wish everyone did it like that. My only point is that it would make it difficult for brands to work with you..but that's OK as long as you're OK with YT likely never being really feasible as a full time job. I personally hate bending to what advertisers want but i know i kinda need to do it if i want the pay day. I'm curious though, as an editor surely your job is to basically do what your clients want.. but do you feel like there's a big difference in your relationship to youtube clients (advertisers / brands) and your relationship as an editor to your clients because of the fact that you have an audience that values your credibility as a reviewer?
@divinelyshpongled yeah, I totally understand your point. I really believe that this really comes down to what the brand and you want to achieve : if it is a review, no money exchanges hands and therefore the expectations are totally different. If it is a paid job, obviously the paid Creator has to work on the wishes of the client (in that case the brand) and that is OK. It's a job nevertheless. That is why I think there needs to be a clear differentiation between review and ad. As a freelance filmeditor in the advertising industry it is very clear and understood that I am being paid to create and support the vision of the client and the brand. In that relationship I have to adhere to the wishes and needs of the client. In that case I obviously don't bring these toc (Tha are only for UA-cam reviews) to the table.
i remember a few years ago you made a video something about how you choose a bag, and one of the things you mentioned has stuck with me since, and you said you have to look at the negatives (or cons) and ask yourself if you can live with that. like you obvs choose a bag that you mostly want, but there's always an aspect or two that will be cons (b/c no bag is perfect unless you design it yourself) and are they deal breakers or can you live with it? that has helped me immensely whenever i purchase not only bags but anything. so yes, it is helpful to know know any negatives b/c it helps in the decision making.
THank you very much. I am happy to read that I was able to help you. And I remember that you have been watching my contetn for awhile. Thank you very much!
Hej Bo! I think the word you were searching for when someone is secretly in the pocket of the company is a schill* (Scottish spelling). I really enjoyed listening to your terms and conditions and your reasons behind some of them. Thanks again for sharing. 👍🏼
I get some money from UA-cam monetization. But it actually halved since the pandemic. And even back then it wasn't covering my production costs. For example I pay for the music rights, editing software (to be fair this I need to pay anyways for my job), equipment, podcast services etc. If you subtract that amount from the youtube money and then divide that by all of the hours I need to work for, my hourly wage is laughable. Which is why I c onsider that money as neglible. Still it is something. I guess if I would be in a different niche of YOutube (for example I hear that finance channels receive a lot of money for the youtube monetization) the calculation would be different. But in this small space of bag enthusiasts its not much.

That was the word I was looking for. Thank you very much. And thanks for listening.
Your integrity is one of the reason I still watch your videos. I also prefer that you are nitpicky about what you are looking at. Feel better soon!
Thanks, Wiliam. You have been a long time supporter and I am really thankful for that.
Great stuff Bo 👊🏼
THanks for listening, Mary!

✌️😊 THanks, Dave!
3:55 what about the money you get from youtube for that video though? is it negligible so you don’t count it? 😅
