How To Fix Nvenc Encoder Overload in OBS Studio + Best Quality Settings 2020!

  • After I built my new streaming computer I started using the new Nvenc encoder to livestream instead of my CPU, however, I kept getting the error encoder overload from OBS Studio.
    I searched for help on the internet and quickly realized most people had no idea what they were talking about and worse yet, they wanted me to turn the quality of my stream down in order to fix the issue.
    Needless to say, none of that helped and the fix was actually quite simple and still allowed me to max out all the quality settings inside OBS Studio for my livestream!

    Good advice even if you're not having this problem, but I'm running in admin mode with high process priority, I've tried dozens of "fixes" and I'm still having encoding issues. I'm also having the Max Audio Buffer error and it's causing OBS to stall up on me all the time and it really messes everything up for me. Before it was some old plugins like downstream keyer that were causing problems with OBS stalling and crashing constantly, but I deleted them and those problems are gone but I'm still having problems. Sometimes OBS caseuse the Windows System thread to take up 50% CPU use on my Ryzen 9 5900X, causing Encoder Overload and Render Lag and I have to exit and restart.

    • @OMGItsDerek
      @OMGItsDerek  5 місяців тому

      Have you tried doing a portable install of OBS and running that with just limited scenes and sources to see if it's a pc issue vs obs issue for sure?

    • @OMGItsDerek
      @OMGItsDerek  5 місяців тому

      Honestly it's a great thing to do even if you don't have any issues. Make a dup of obs whenever you go to make any "upgrades" to your stream in case something you add causes problems. It's so small a program you can even save old versions so far back so you can always revert back a few installs if you need to. I love portable version so much more IMO.

    Edit: I figured out the problem, in order to fix it, I had to disable audio enhancements on the "RealTek" microphone input. The problem is it makes my audio worse but at this point I'm on my own.
    I have an issue with OBS where it will frequently and very briefly not update my keyboard inputs when I'm playing a game. Sometimes this means that it won't detect an input or other times it will continue an input after I let go of the button. Before editing this I talked about it more but I have now realized that it happens whenever my mic is being recorded (like in a VC). I did download a surround sound application right before I got problems but uninstalling it didn't work, so I believe it at have changed something in the Windows settings.

      I'm gonna edit the comment so that if someone passes by, they will get the full information, but essentially I have limited it down to only being caused when my microphone input is being listened to (was in a VC and the problem happened; further testing proved this), which leads me to think that the download of the surround sound software created an unwanted change in Windows. I hope someone with deep expertise in Windows 10 finds this

      I figured out the problem, I had to disable audio enhancements. This fixed my gameplay but unfortunately made my mic input sound substantially worse. I don't know what I'm gonna do, but at least I've pinpointed what is going on.

    Question for you. Do you know if you stream to UA-cam and use a 12k bitrate if that will hurt the viewer? I have 25-30 upload and an RTX 3080. So I want to push h.264 new. Also, I’m using my PC to capture from a game from a Ps4 pro. Should I change to 59.94 FPS? I noticed Elgato is capturing that and not 60 for whatever reason. (PS4 Pro must output 59.94)

    • @OMGItsDerek
      @OMGItsDerek  3 роки тому

      YouTibe had transcoding by default so viewers should be able to just downscale the video so it shouldn't be an issue. And nah I'd stick with 60fps. That .06 won't be noticed and it will.keep.your actual gameplay 60. Honestly either way won't hurt anything but personally I'd stick with 60

    HEY I HAVE ANOTHER TIP FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO DO THIS WHILE SAVING TO A NETWORK DRIVE (lots of people put a drive on their router to save VODs from streaming PC onto editing PC - for instance my NetGear Nighthawk XR1000 has my old 1tb USB HDD attached to it)
    - The problem is because running programs as administrator ends up denying you the All-Users privilege to access Network drives.
    ----- How to fix:
    1. Open Registry Editor and go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies/System" (every "/" is a subfolder you need to open to get to the next bit)
    2. There will be a list of things such as "ConsentPrompt" and "EnableCursorSuppression," and "ValidateAdminCodeSignatures."
    3. Right-click in the empty space and select New, and then "DWORD (32-bit) value."
    4. Name that DWORD value "EnableLinkedConnections" right-click it, select "Modify" and then change "Value data," from 0 to 1.
    ---- Basically the EnableLinkedConnections thing is a pre-baked registry that's already validated for the "All Users," group but not Administrator. I'm pretty sure this is done to prevent malware from invading your network and other devices in it, because doing this will allow one PC to modify the programs in a network drive potentially used by other PCs. If you want to disable this when not using OBS just find it again and change the Value data back to 0, restart, and you're good.
    ---- That being said, after I did that extra little bit (all of what I've included there comes from the www.winability.com/how-to-make-elevated-programs-recognize-network-drives/ website), I let my OBS run on my stream PC for a good little while and am currenty at 0/38400 frames skipped.
    ---- Phenomenal considering when I first heard "run as administrator" from others I thought this was a tip for people who streamed off their gaming rig and wanted to prioritize OBS over the game, and once I tried it I couldn't access my NAS and gave up on it. Encoding lag was still horrific though (even doing all the incorrect advice you were talking about everyone giving, like lowering quality and B-frames). Then I watched this video and told myself "there's gotta be a way to let OBS see my NAS in Administrator mode," and once I figured it out... HOLY SMOKES

    Very interesting video. I finally bit the bullet and stood up a gaming PC and made my old PC the streaming PC. The streaming PC has a 2080S and a 3900x and I play in 1440p. However, once I added the Elgato 4k60 Pro MK.2 capture card I feel like I get worse streaming/recording performance and bounce off of the encoding overload warning more than when I only had a single PC setup. Do you have any thoughts about troublesome capture cards or if higher resolution or higher bitrate is better (I stream on UA-cam and generally have gravitated towards the higher bitrate).
    Keep up the good work!

    • @OMGItsDerek
      @OMGItsDerek  3 роки тому +1

      With the capture card are you doing any rescaling in OBS? If so, under the output turn off rescale outout there and do it under video tab instead. Use output scaled. Also, in regards to bitrate versus resolution they both matter. Doing a 1080p at a super high bitrate could look better up to a certain point than a 1440p or 4K stream at a low bit rate.obviously the higher you can get in regards to both the better overall your streams go into look.there is no simple answer to the question but one thing to keep in mind is that as you raise resolution you must drastically raise bit rate in order to keep up. A lot of times this can cause issues for people trying to watch your content, especially live streams. I don't really see a compelling argument for going over 1080p at this point.

    • @OMGItsDerek
      @OMGItsDerek  3 роки тому +1

    • @GraybeardGiffTech
      @GraybeardGiffTech 3 роки тому

      @@OMGItsDerek I agree with everything you said. The only compelling reason is I stream to UA-cam and if you stream in 1440p you get the VP09 codec which is much better for fast moving games. That's the only reason I bother with it.

      Well the reason I asked what GPU you were using is because unless you have a 2000 or 3000 series Nvidia card they don't have a separate encoding chip built into them meaning that it actually does use your gpus resources to do this. So another option could be cap in your frame rate in game to stop encoding overload

    Hey dude! Any update/tips for the encoder overload with AC Valhalla for recording as of Nov 2020? I mean, i get atrocious results in footage and folks are saying 2080 RTX Super is weak to record that game on High Settings at 60 FPS cap with or without Vsync... I'm at a loss HOW a top 7 GPU is too weak to record ACV not even in ultra, but high... and i get up to 12% of encoder overload

    • @OMGItsDerek
      @OMGItsDerek  3 роки тому

      Are you running OBS in admin mode? If so, it should keep it steady and cause you to just get lower frames in ACV. If you do, I'm not sure tbh other then turning some of the settings for encoding down a bit. This is just worked for me and haven't had an issue in any game since.

    • @ShadowsCozyInn
      @ShadowsCozyInn 3 роки тому

      @@OMGItsDerek yes, i did run it in admin mode, however, problem lies with OBS bc that garbage needs a NASA rig and after their team said 2080 RTX super is too weak for ACV in 4K. Honestly just depends which one works best for you man. I would try them both and run a couple games and see which games get you the highest frame rates, maybe see which one gives you higher PC temperatures, etc and maybe just like for a couple streams switch back and forth between the two and see if you have issues pop up with one or the other. A lot of times it depends on the specific games that you play as some games are more CPU intensive whereas some are more GPU intensive. However, for the most part nvenc typically tends to be the best as it's literally designed to do just that... Streaming. Especially with the newer 4000 series graphics card that uses the A1 efficiency codec.

      40000 is probably causing the overload. Anything above 20000 from my experience tends to be overkill. If you're saving the data to a traditional hard disk drive as well as playing the game off that drive and everything else, that could be your bottleneck.
