This is hands down the best video I have watched that talks about OBS stream output/video and doesn't just speed through shit with zero explanation. Those are videos got me hella lost, and super hella confused. I watched this and my stream seems steadier and clearer than before with the rig I have. Thanks!
So far the best explanation on the net! I feel sorry for myself for not finding this before I botched a stream from the ”slightly” older hardware I was forced to use on a specific occasion.I guess it also was stupid to have OBS and Zoom compete for resources on a dual-core processor…
Weird question. This is the 5th video I've watched talking about x264 vs Nvidia's encoder but none of the videos can help me with my problem. I stream with a 2070 super, i7 10th gen CPU and I normally have NO issues what so ever running the nvidia encoder with quality setting and 4000 bitrate. However, with TWO games (only these two i've noted in the past year) have an issue where I get a max of 40 FPS while streaming. I even lower the in-game graphics to as low as it can go with no fix to this. The games are Apex Legends and HUNT: Showdown. Now again I can normally run games like Forza 4 at ULTRA specs and get easily 100+ FPS on stream without a stutter. But when I play these two games it all goes to shit. I tried switching my encoder to x264 and it FIXED the frames issue for both Apex Legends and HUNT....why is that? Shouldn't it be the other way around based on performance and the way you described the encoders in this video?
Excellent tutorial! You did a great job explaining the features as well as the pros/cons of the settings. Will these settings for the NVIDIA NVENCH H.264 also work for just regular video recordings (not streaming) for UA-cam videos?
So if streaming at 936p resolution like you ended up settling on in your more recent video, do you check off "Rescale Output" and set that to 936p? Or still leave that setting untouched and only set that resolution in the "Output (scaled) Resolution" under the "Video" settings?
Set your output resolution in the video tab, don’t do the rescaling in the output tab. The only time you use that is if you want to record at a different res!
Love that background! :) Any recommendations for OBS settings for UA-cam streaming? Would they be the same as these for Twitch? Tried streaming MK11 and my comp nearly had a seizure during every fight.
If memory serves correctly you are on a single pc streaming set up right? I would say start by turning down in game settings! If you are still getting lag try disabling the preview in OBS to reduce encoding and rendering lag, and if both of those don’t fix the issue I would suggest dropping down in resolution! If you are already at 720p60 I would say it might be time to consider upgrading your streaming pc 😅
P1xelPerfect LOL yep, just the one PC and suffice it to say she’s definitely not the prettiest girl at the ball 😅 I need to replace her but wanted to see if there were some settings I could tweak in the interim before I take Ol’ Yeller out to the shed 😁 Thanks for the tips! Will try those Friday
Going to 264 on streaming PC with ryzen 7 3700x - Ive selected CPU usage Fast at 8500 bitrate (on youtube stream) Do you think I could go to medium? Id have OBS, chrome, and discord open on streaming pc when live
Which encoder would you suggest for 5800X and RTX 3070? With the x264 on fast and 6000 I was getting up to 50% CPU usage but that's without VTuber running.
Awesome video. My issue is that im on a 1PC setup. Ryzen 7 3700x, 2070 super, 32 ram. Internet I have fiber so 500 Down and 500 Upload. But when I stream using the either encoder my stream gets the skipped frames detected. Im currently play COD WARZONE and those graphics are set to low or disabled. Really not sure why im getting the skipped frames. The bitrate I normally use is 4500. Also when I look in at my task manager obs64 is hitting like 60-80 percent which cause the overall GPU to hit 100 percent and thats when I the skip frames occur. Any suggestions?
I don’t know what happened but after I set my settings up for nvenc it broke. I used to be able to stream nvenc on default settings but after changing them nvenc errors out.
I noticed that you now stream at 936p instead of 1080p. Do you still use these same exact settings and just rescale output to 1664x936 in the Output>Advanced tab? Also what antialiasing setting do you use in Warzone? I use the highest one and it makes my streams look blurry. Thanks for all your help!
Quick question! So when using the x264 encoder my frames are fine in game and the stream is running smooth. The game feels “slow” thought the frames are fine it doesn’t feel crisp and smooth. I have a R7 5800x and a 5700XT.
GPU: RTX 3060 CPU i5-10600kf When I stream using my GPU it lags but when I use my CPU it doesn’t lag as much when I play Warzone is that normal? Figured 3060 would be able to handle it without skipped frames
I have a gtx 1080 ti and i7 10700, if I wanted to stream Black Ops Cold War would it be better to stream with nvenc new or x264? Cooling is not an issue.
Hi, on this setup if you would like to stream 1080p in 60fps, the NVEnc (new) it probably the best way to do it, with same settings shown at 16:00 in the video. If you prefer having a better quality, you can also choose to use processor with x264 in "faster" or even "fast" preset, but in 720P. The result will be probably a better quality overall, especially in high motion scenes, but the processor will have to work hard, so you need to check if your game remains stable and fast while encoding. You can try this with the recording option in OBS, before you stream in real :)
I wish OBS worked with VST but it is a coin toss if it will or not depending on the vst. Load the same plugin in any other program I have and not one issue which means OBS needs some love here but they couldn't care less I found out.

Keyframe interval... what? What do you mean "two frames"? "The higher the keyframe interval, the clearer more frames will be"? Maybe I just don't understand, what you want to say, but the 2 there means you will have 1 keyframe in every 2 seconds. Higher number will result more rare keyframes, and the video quality will be worse.
No, video quality will be better but at the cost of latency. More key frames is better quality because a keyframe is a non compressed frame that saves the full amount of data. If you are familiar with animation key framing it’s like the opposite of what’s called “tweens or tweening” where in animation tweening are the frames that are in between the good frames; tweens are the awkward drawings that bridge fluidity with distorted images to smoothen the viewing experience without having jarring transitions between frames. In this instance keyframe interval is almost the opposite in the sense of every keyframe interval is going to have one full frame of full data information to keep the quality up, but at the cost of time to spool up and make said keyframe. Hence why it would increase viewer latency but look better. But this is a small increase in fidelity at best when you are bitrate capped at 6mb (8MB for partners). There is no making up lack of bitrate, as uncompressed 1080p60 usually wants 60mb/s but with a medium x264 encoder speed you can record at 30mb/s and the compression between 60 to 30 is negligible. And even then, if you were to record at that rate UA-cam caps 1080p60 videos at 15mb/s on their internal ingestion rate too lol unfortunately we as creators will never get to broadcast true high quality 1080p60 do to bandwidth restrictions.
@@P1xelPerfect I recorded now some videos. One thing is sure: The number in keyframe interval tells you, how seconds pass between two keyframes. You can set up 1-10 seconds. 1: Keyframe in every second. 10:Keyframe in every 10 seconds. I wanted to demonstrate this with low bitrate, but my settings resulted in so bad quality in every scenario that I can't decide which is better :D Twitch automatically sets up 2 seconds interval. At least, in one of my stream I measured that much. 1080p 60hz stream.
Hi, it's not a bad setup, with this PC you probably want to use the NVEnc (new) encoder. So it'll let your processor available for your game. The best would be to copy the exact settings he's showing at 16:00 on the video. The bitrate at 6000kbps max, and only if your internet connexion has a high speed in upload. If you have a slow upload connexion, you can try a lower bitrate (half of your upload speed is probably a good choice).
