    (comments of all views are allowed but curse words are filtered and the comment deleted, so if you want your comment shown, no foul words). The crew knew someone was in the cage, it's the passengers who were on the second deck asking because they weren't paying attention prior, please read description below. The shark was fine and the boat operators keep shark poachers away thus saving countless great whites from shark fin soup. I agree, the cages could use better engineering.
    As seen on Shark Week!

    This became one of the biggest viral videos of 2016.
    This is not our usual kids content and Gabe and Garrett did not go on this trip, this video is from my trip to Guadalupe Island (I'm their dad).
    On a recent great white shark cage diving trip we experienced a very rare horrifying shark encounter event, a shark breaching the side of the cage. What might appear to be an aggressive great white shark trying to attack the cage, this is not the case. These awesome sharks are biting at large chunks of tuna tied to a rope. When a great white shark lunges and bites something, it is temporarily blinded. They also cannot swim backwards. So this shark lunged at the bait, accidentally hit the side of the cage, was most likely confused and not able to swim backwards, it thrust forward and broke the metal rail of the cage. There was a single diver inside the cage. He ended up outside the bottom of the cage, looking down on two great white sharks. The diver is a very experienced dive instructor, remained calm, and when the shark thrashed back outside the cage, the diver calmly swam back up and climbed out completely uninjured. The boat crew did an outstanding job, lifting the top of the cage, analyzing the frenzied situation, and the shark was out after a few long seconds. Everyone on the boat returned to the cages the next day, realizing this was a very rare event. The boat owner, captain, and crew are to be commended for making what could've been a tragic event into a happy ending. I'm sure God and luck had a bit to do with it too!
    I want to return next year for another great white shark adventure!
    FYI, being a kids channel, bad language in the comments gets caught in the filter.
    Update based on comments:
    1. Crew knows there's a diver in the cage, it's passengers asking if anyone is in there.
    2. Shark had very minor injury and is confirmed okay.
    3. These tour operators work with the gov't, non-profit agencies, sanctuaries, marine biologists for the good of the sharks.
    4. Cage design and bait techniques are being reviewed and changes made if necessary to ensure safety for sharks and divers.
    5. 'Leave the sharks alone' got them on the endangered species list because poachers won't leave them alone.
    6. No video footage from diver.
    7. If you want your post read, don't cuss because it will be auto-filtered.

      The one who said "Nobody is in the cage" is probably not the guide nor the boat operator, and they corrected themselves later on with "somebody's in the cage". So.

      The crew looked like they knew there was someone inside. The moment they incident happened, they were getting ready to go in and when the shark escaped, they grabbed their goggles but they saw the diver surfacing.

    • @GabeandGarrett
      @GabeandGarrett  8 років тому +133

      What you heard was one of the passengers, not the crew. The crew knows exactly who is in each cage, and for how long, they monitor the cage divers closely. They can tell you to the second how long they've been down and which air hose goes to which diver.

    • @FlynnClubbaire
      @FlynnClubbaire 8 років тому +23

      I mean... The description states pretty explicitly that, for his own safety, the diver exited the cage, and returned to it only after the shark had left. So, there seriously was nobody in the cage when the guy said "There's nobody in the cage." No lies, no mistakes.

  • @GabeandGarrett
    @GabeandGarrett  8 років тому +1522

    Some common misconceptions I'm seeing in the comments:
    1. The people asking if there's anyone in the cage are the passengers, not the crew. The cages hold up to four people each, they have it listed on each air hose who is in the cage and exactly how they long they've been in the water. The passengers on the deck come and go and some happened on this scene from above and are asking out loud, please don't confuse that with the crew diligently trying to get the diver out in the safest way possible.
    2. There was blood spotted from the sharks gills, this was only noticed on the video afterwards, at the frenzied moment, which happened so quick, they didn't notice and at the time a diver was still in/under the cage, which was their focus. Please don't take this as them not caring about any injuries to the shark. These people absolutely love sharks, a marine biologist was on board, they want to provide awareness of these amazing great white sharks and have people experience them and understand they are to be protected and not feared in the "Jaws" sense. They usually swim around the cages, curiously, and do not attack the divers or cages. The blood could be from thrashing in the metal cage, possibly the tuna, but it was evaluated by a biologist and determined to be a minor wound and the shark was spotted the next day totally fine. Sharks can be very aggressive with each other and fight, and even the large prey they attack is a very physical thing, so they are quite tough and often get scraped and gouged and bloodied and it's just another day for them.
    3. It is understandable that some people feel differently, and that's fine and worthy of discussion, but these boat operators love these sharks and their overall mission is to bring awareness and protection to them. Often the best way to make positive changes in awareness and protection is experiencing the subject to be protected. These are amazing creatures, they are awesome to see in person, they will not attack and eat you, they are fearless and curious,, they are at the top of the food chain but humans are not part of that chain. They are listed as an endangered species, so awareness and protection are vital to their survival and experiencing them brings awe and appreciation. This video does not show a shark attack, it shows an extremely rare accident and the shark unintentionally hit the cage, has no capability to reverse, so instead of turning sideways it thrust through the cage. The power shown is incredible. The diver was experienced and although you can't plan for this kind of event, did the right thing, did not panic, and the crew made all the right decisions, opening the top, checking to see if they should attempt to pull the diver by the rope or give the shark a moment to free itself up out of the cage and then evaluate the best way to bring up the diver. They knew who the diver was, that he was there, from the video perspective you couldn't see bottom of the cage but they could, the water was clear, and they helped bring him out safely. Could it have been worse? Of course, horrible accidents happen, flocks of birds get struck in jet airplane engines, but landing safely takes skill, experience, and a certain amount of luck.
    4. The cage diving operators, who work with the government and the marine sanctuary there are collectively reviewing and making appropriate changes to cage design and bait techniques. They want this to be as safe as possible for divers and for sharks. The goal is shark awareness and preservation through experience. These people sincerely have the best interest of the sharks in mind and work with non-profit organizations and agencies and sanctuaries to best make this a positive thing for the sharks. The sharks are not "fed". The sharks are there naturally at Guadalupe Island in big numbers in the summer and fall to feed on the seals and elephant seals that congregate there. That is their main prey. The chunks of tuna are tied to a rope to lure them even closer to the cages. The sharks come to the cages out of curiosity regardless, but this assures more frequency as the divers rotate in and out of the cages. The bait is yanked away when the shark goes to bite it because they don't want them just there to find an easy way to get tuna meat. At times they do grab the meat, but not substantially enough to make it any kind of food source.
    5. Lots of comments on "just leave the sharks alone". And that's a debatable position to take, no doubt. But the "leaving them alone" strategy has ended up with the great white sharks on the endangered species list. A huge danger to these sharks is illegal culling for their fins. Having several cage dive boats in this area where the sharks are heavily populated keeps out poachers and protects them. The parks and governments don't have the budgets to keep patrol boats there 24/7/365. And the experience the divers get form these operators brings awareness to the sharks and a thrilling adventure. These are all shark lovers. Doing nothing - sharks may disappear. Having operations like this, a strong argument can be made that it's an effective way to protect the species.
    6. The diver had a camera with him and took lots of video and photos, but unfortunately not during the 'event', so there's no underwater video of this from his perspective.
    7. On a different note, all viewpoints are allowed equally in the comments, if your comment doesn't show up it's because we have a filter for foul language that's pretty strict as our core subscribers are family friendly kids content viewers, and we want parents of young kids, and the kids themselves, to read comments without bad language. There's no deleting of various view points, just the language itself. I see some very good points being made from both sides but some key words keep them from going public, so if you want to make a good point please do so without bad language. Thank you.

      Sad. This kind of thing should be banned, no research going on here whatsoever, just throwing "chum" into the water to attract sharks, and some tuna on a rope to guide the shark near the cage. Also conditions shark to see boats as a food source, potentially causing human deaths.
      I know this is nothing compared to the thousands of sharks killed each year for their fins, but still, two wrongs don't make a right.

      Maria Jesus Valdes you are literally what's wrong with the Internet and life. You know about 10% of the facts and have formed a stupid opinion. The operators clearly knew someone was in the cage, the spectators were confused. The shark wasn't directed, just in case you can't read- sharks are momentarily blinded after lunging at bait. It panicked but got free. Sad that it's bleeding, but it was an accident. ACCIDENT.

      The shark 'handlers' are actually experts, this is so rare that it's the first time this happened to them and they've been doing it for decades. No matter how you slice it, it's a risky thing. If these were giant goldfish swimming around, no one would be there.

      There is very little we can do about stupidity and common sense is just not so common. If you listened carefully and watched the operators, you will see that they got this and the fact the diver came unharmed was just great. When you go in the shark cage, there is a possibility that you might be eaten by a shark, even our families warn us when we decide on such experience, that is the reality of the experience otherwise go to the aquarium and you will enjoy the experience from behind the glass safely....

    One-liner summary of my long post for those who prefer Tweet-sized sentences!
    If you want those points filled out with more info, it's in my other post!

      The shark was spotted later that day and several times the next day and was totally fine. There was also a marine biologist aboard the boat at the time. The boat operators know each shark by name, they can identify each individual. They have a binder on the boat with dozens of pages of the known sharks and their names.

      what would you suggest in replacement. all very well saying dont do something without having a alternative

    • @Arrogan28
      @Arrogan28 8 років тому

      I don't think the issue is so cut and dry. I think they need to tighten up the rules, and there should be way more pressure not to let the animals get too worked up, and into a frenzy, which is when they get hurt, or they kill each other. But there is way worse stuff going on, how about the fishing, lets put an end to sport fishing sharks for fun, and even worse, do something to save the ecosytems which are being destroyed super fast by drag net fishing, which destroys every living thing on the bottom, the are destroying every square part of the ocean floor, and other types of net commercial or huge line fishing is just killing everything fast. That is really what we need to stop, this is only seeming bad because we get to see it, the worse stuff is happening without anyone filming it with a go pro. This lets people get to see the animals, and that always helps conservation. Stopping this will mean people will ignore the fact that they are getting killed by fishing, etc. Even all the cetaceans are being killed now because of sonar oil and gas exploration. They are setting off sonar explosions that make the animals beach themselves to escape it. Those mf from the fossil fuel industry are basically killing all the remaining whales because of this. Watch Sonic Sea, and how they find these dolphins,whales, etc beached with their inside of their eardrums melted, and also the part of their brain that is attached is also liquefied from these explosions that are being set off every few seconds over the length of time of weeks, and systematically sweeping the entire ocean as well. Basically it would be like having the stereo so loud your ears are bleeding, and your brain is liquefying and you cannot escape, so the whales then beach themselves to commit suicide. That is where we need outrage. Yes some sharks are hurt here, but that that is ok if it means we put people in touch with the oceans in a real and emotional way... I don't like seeing the sharks hurt either, but they just need to get better at not letting them get frenzied, and being more careful how they use the bait, etc.

    • @leoncoetzee1801
      @leoncoetzee1801 8 років тому +7

      O.o - why should there HAVE be an alternative!? If a similar, more non-invasive method could be applied for scientific research purposes, then i could possibly endorse that; but considering how much research has already been conducted - what can there possibly be to research more, which would essentially necessitate these intrusive methods ... they are obsolete and redundant in my view, and rarely serve any purpose other than spectator value and profitability ... why not just leave the sharks be?

    • @Arrogan28
      @Arrogan28 8 років тому +5

      +Leon Coetzee Because right now most people think great white and see Jaws, Jaws II, Jaws III, Deep Blue Sea, etc, and then don't care if these animals get wiped out. As I have said this is not the thing that is not killing them off, it is the fishing, etc, so if you show them swimming gently beside people in cages, and it helps change the image people have, so they will support passing laws and giving money to protect them. They did a study awhile ago where they compared the chances of an endangered animal coming back against the publics perception of them, and there is a direct correlation to the publics perception of liking them, vs not to whether they will be saved.
      In fact they showed in that study that more then how much money was put into scientific study, etc, that the most important factor that dictates whether an endangered animal will survive is whether the public thinks they are either cute, or they like them. So we need the public to like Great White so they can relate to them, otherwise chances are they will eventually become endangered and there will not be enough done to help them. So while I share you sentiment that some of these yahoos are being ignorant in how they get the sharks riled up, etc, it is more important to let it continue in order to secure their survival...

    • @Arrogan28
      @Arrogan28 8 років тому +2

      I agree they need better work on the cage, but it isn't easy. that is an incredible strong animal and is capable of bending those bars pretty easily when it is going full force against it. I do not think you can make the steal stronger without making it heavier, or paying a crazy amount for special steel, so it is just the reality. Maybe I am wrong, and someone way smarter needs to come up with a better, stronger system. But, still, i don't blame them for not being able to stop a 2000 pound animal from bending a steel bar, and that is just the average size, biggest females can weigh 4300 lbs when mature.

    • @sniffy6999999
      @sniffy6999999 8 років тому +4

      The cage would be made out of aluminium not steel, it's a lot lighter and doesn't corrode. One wouldn't expect a shark to batter it's way in.I suspect the food was to close to the bars or perhaps fell inside it and the shark went for it. Might be wrong tho.

    • @Arrogan28
      @Arrogan28 8 років тому

      Yea, you are no doubt right about the aluminum. I should know that. I grew up on the coast and aluminum was used for everything on boats because of its strength-weight ratio, and because it doesn't rust...
      I just looked up a link here...
      www.popularmechanics.com/adventure/outdoors/a16400/the-secret-strength-of-shark-cages-is-aluminum/
      Scanning quickly, they did make one out of steel, that is for the really big sharks, but it is a 100,000 dollar cage...
      Ha, it says the sharks would not hurt the cage... I wonder if that was on of their cages... Anyway, yea aluminum you are right....

    What is amazing to me, is that they still make the opening in the cage big enough for a shark that size or even half that size to be able to get into the cage. It is harmful to the shark and no one needs to that close to danger to get an adrenaline boost. If that is what you want get out of the cage and give the shark a chance ti see YOU up close.

    It makes me sick that in today's society people value the lives of animals over humans. I've lost hope in humanity scrolling down and I only see comments hoping the shark is ok. Not a Single comment asks if the diver is ok. Plus, these people were luring the shark so they can see it not hunt it, and the blood on its gills are from the tuna the shark was biting into which was attached to the boat as bait. If you're mother was in the cage how would you feel if everyone is asking if the shark is ok, not your mother. I'm all for animal right, but I would never value the lives of animals (unless they are pets) over humans. Also don't get me wrong, if these people were doing this to try to hunt the shark I would very much be on the shark's side.

      Emma L the shark is perfectly fine. It just ate a huge piece of blood soaked tuna (used to lure the shark close to the cage) and since the gills are directly connected to the sharks mouth the tuna blood came out of the sharks gills giving the appearance that it was bleeding from its gills.

      The Shark was not bleeding. All of that red coloured stuff is simply the bait. It's specifically "blended" (and I use that term loosely) to be as bloody and tasty as possible to attract sharks. Sharkskin is incredibly tough. If it were to bleed from anywhere, it would have been either its main dorsal fin or the two side fins (that I forget the name of).
      What you have here is a very confused shark and scared witless hoomon. (Because if I were in there, the water would be a distinct brown colour).

    • @roluf3060
      @roluf3060 8 років тому

      Just some further information. The blood coming from the gills. If anyone knows how fish breath... they take water in through their mouths and flush it through their gills. Guess where the blood goes. Also... how could it be bleeding from the gills and nowhere else?
      Logic my friends. It will doom us all ;).

  • @johaman4750

    There is hardly any common sense in this thread. I will always fight for the protection and preservation of wildlife, but I'm also never ignorant of the fact that some sharks and other species will instinctively kill a human being; not always for food, but mostly when threatened. Sharks are not and never will be pets. Try to cultivate healthy respect for the many types of life that share this planet, but never attribute predators, like sharks, with human thoughts or feelings; it's nearly always a fatal mistake. Also, I'm utterly baffled why so many people would assume the crew were trying to harm the shark or catch it simply because there was a cage. As others have already mentioned, cages are needed to protect the divers. The presence of one in this video could imply that the crew was conducting research or perhaps filming the sharks in their natural habitat. It's as if a ridiculous number of people posting comments have never watched a single documentary or read a book in their entire lives. Then there's the folks more distraught over a perceived injury to the shark than they are to the safety of a fellow human being. Please stop trying to convince people that you're some kind of humanitarian with your absurd logic. Whether your comment reads like a doomsday wish, ridiculously advocating the utter annihilation of mankind in an effort to preserve nature, or was carelessly directed to the diver trapped in the cage who most likely has a family that cares deeply for him, you have only succeeded in making yourself appear less ethical or humane than you perhaps intended. Develop rational solutions if you're worried. You can and should care about all life. Concern for humanity's well-being and the preservation of other species should never be mutually exclusive. Be cautious reasoning in extremes & have a great day.

    • @yucah
      @yucah 8 років тому +77

      No, the blood is from the SHARK, not the bait. It states clearly in other articles that the shark was injured when a metal bar from the cage was broken off and slashed the side of the shark while it was struggling. Also, it is highly illegal to bait the cage to lure sharks. It makes sharks associate people with food, causing more wildlife conflicts.

    I don't understand why are there such big holes in the cage, it's dangerous for the shark (because if a shark gets stock he can't swim backwards) and for the divers as well. Is it because you can see more like this as a diver? I hope not.
