Originally owned by silent film era movie star Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, this beautiful piece of automotive royalty is a sight to behold. It looks right, and sounds right, but how does it drive?

That was SO awesome. 100 year old car, first time seeing it ... starts it and immediately correctly calls out an issue & gets it fixed. Yeah ... absolute boss.
@@THE_BaconPirate "Dufus" is a VP, he was in front of the engine, which is much louder than what you get, because someone is equaling their mikes and the sound from the camera.
And it's not 'some guy', he's one of Jay's most experienced employees. Guys breathes this stuff, like Jay. That shop's probably one of the most knowledgeable on old cars in NA. They inherited several archives and worked with many experts who are now long gone.

this video displayed the true mechanical acumen of Jay. He could tell that something was wrong with the engine just by listening to it. A true MotorHead !

Instantly diagnosing an obscure problem like a loose priming cup; that was most impressive. (Especially when the car's custodian didn't even recognise a problem.)

He does this on a bunch of videos- His cars, other people's cars. He even fixes a steam,-powered car, unassisted, on the roadside.

Very common, very loud and Leno’s no doubt heard it a million times. It’s common because you adjust them all the time.
Jay Leno really know his stuff. I'm a big car guy myself but I have never driven a 100 year old car so I'm not really familiar with primer cups, but I was kinda impressed that Jay instantly noticed that one was still open as he started the car.

It's an unmistakable sound. My car occasionally has one open up. It will not only make the sound but the engine will miss from lack of compression.

What an amazing patron for these classics. Putting them on video, showing people how they actually drive on modern streets. This is better than having it as a museum. Jay is a national treasure.

A museum car can still be put on video and driven just like this. Not mutually exclusive, but Jay already had an audience and is obviously a pro presenter/speaker. Best is for a museum to showcase their cars here. I will assume after Jay's gone, he'd want his collection to be public. Will be a great museum.

The "guy holding the ball" is probably Atlas... the guy from Greek mythology who holds up the sky. He's often depicted as carrying the world.
Atlas was the senior son of Poseidon and Cleito and would likely have been very large and posibly what they sometimes call Annakin as a result of God and human hybrid. Genesis called them mighty men and heroes of old. According to Otto Muck Atlantis was centred on the current day Azores and according to old Egyptian legend sank beneath the sea in a terrible day and terrible night. Think of the Atlantic Ocean and the Atlas Mountains named after Atlas. It is legend.

Definitely Atlas, demonstrating his strength by literally shouldering the weight of the world. Appropriate for a powerful car ... and besides, you'd need a road atlas to find your way😁
That'd be a sucky job. You HEAR about places like San Moritz, Venice, Yellowstone, Taos or Maui, but you can't take ONE MINUTE to go visit them, or the whole shebang is gonna fly off into the cosmos.
There is another Mcfarlan knickerbocker Cabriolet left it's painted eggshell white and was shown at the 2017 Ironstone Concourse De' Elegance.

It could be a little better if Jay had had a top hat, walking stick and monocle to lend to Cameron if the guy's expected to ride in the back. Those accessories should well with the golf shirt, jeans & athletic shoes.
Two books have been published about McFarlan. "What was the McFarlan" by Keith Marvin, Alvin J. Arnheim with Henry Blommel in 1967, and "Custom Built by McFarlan" by Richard Stanley in 2012. The first book is out of print but the second can be obtained by contacting the Fayette County Historical Museum in Connersville.
I like how knowledgeable and respectful Cameron is. He's a great guy to introduce these cars to the next generation.
Not nearly as knowledgeable as Jay. Jay is the ULTIMATE car guy! What other collector has both Stanley Steamers and McLarens?
Respectful yes, but knowledgeable in a vehicle that he has little to no information on is not very knowledgeable. The McFarlane was an automobile and coach building company that had every model as a unique choice. Now a lot of people get the impression...well a lot of people have never studied anything in their life other than the Model T, but people don't understand that the luxury ideal of the time was never a tudor top Limousin or sedan. The big luxury thing was the enclosed limousine, sport sedan, or enclosed stationary top coupe/cabriolet. If you look at a rubay (HIGHLY expensive automobile company beyond cadillac lincoln pierce arrow you name it) you'll see a beautiful long sedan body, cut short roof, beautifully angled front windshield, large fenders and white walls in the 1910s. Very art deco design around 1916-1918 and a 150 wheelbase. Then you look at a Winton, with gorgeous curvature, long open window from front to back with little slits for the door openings, came in a variety from cherry red, cream vanilla, to an early metallic storm blue. Pierce arrow had this fanciful carriage esk window design, large large tires that were about 2.7/4 the size of a 6 foot man, classical colors of the early automobile days, and amazing embellishments.
These are vehicles that everyone should have known about, but were covered up by the Model T, in all its absolutely charmless clash.

Cameron is one of the best guests. It's Jay's show, people don't realize it's edited so Jay can say the stuff. We're pretty lucky to have a 'Rich Kid' that grew up with these autos and really does understand what is great about cars, and these old cars in particular. He doesn't have to have every tech detail, he knows a ton and talks to people all the time. I'm jealous of 'the kid' but pretty glad he's taking care of the collection.
Fatty Arbuckle was a true Hollywood tragedy. Framed, proven innocent yet never recovered his career.

I've seen some of his footage. His comedy holds up. Still funny after all the years.

What may be the only one in existence, the people on the road have no idea how lucky they are to witness it driving down the road, more so with the legendary Jay Leno behind the wheel.
True that. When I lived in Aptos, CA I was witness to two Bugatti's at a gas station. They were being toured after the Concourse de Elegance in Monterey. The owners were super cool and talked with us for a while, showed us cars and the engines. Fun times.

Great show. Glad to see a McFarlan get some props. The Fayette County Historical Museum in Connersville has essentially an identical car in it's collection.
I think it's the one that once was in the Harrah's auto collection in Las Vegas. It's two tone gray and black. The museum also has a Cord 810, a Lexington, an Auburn sedan, and a McIntire. All built in Connersville. Also, the Indiana History Center in Indianapolis just completed a " Indiana Cars of the 20s" exhibition that included a McFarlan roadster.
Awesome, going to have to make a trek over there from Elizaville. Used to live in ECI but never spent much time in Connersvile.
The mascot on the radiator cap looks to me like Atlas. A giant from greek mythology who had to bear the earth on his shoulders. Somewhat fitting for the aspiration and presence of this vehicle.
Had Jay's NBC career been NYC located and not Burbank CA, he'd know immediately the radiator cap is Atlas holding up the world. Rockefeller Center has a building (Fifth Ave. side) fronted by a sculpture of Atlas holding an open version of the globe.

@@user-ji6if2nh4o: Apparently you didn't pay close enough attention...they were Knipex smooth jaw pliers, not channellocks! Knipex makes some of the best tools on earth.

I cringed, too - until the mechanic paused for a moment and I recognized the smooth jaws (and adjustment mechanism) of Knipex "plier wrench". I discovered those fairly recently.
I think it's less likely to damage the faces of the hex than an open-end wrench.
The real winner here, besides us viewers, is Cameron Richards. Not only does he have access to an amazing collection of automobiles, but over the years we have seen him cultivate a friendship with Jay who offers him a plethora of knowledge about so many things automotive.
And fixes Cameron's cars, too, apparently.
I’m glad this car has survived and is restored to such beautiful condition. Mr. Arbuckle’s fall is rather a sad affair as it seems he was innocent of wrong doing. So it’s nice something so emblematic of him surviving and looking amazing a 100 years later. You can just imagine him, dressed to the nines, riding in the back, probably with a lady. Thanks Jay and Cameron.

I love how the guy said it just got back from Pebble Beach inspection and then as soon as they fire it up, Jay is like oh no this is wrong amd immediately diagnosis it and has his mechanic fix it. Lol

I love that a silver spoon in mouth guy like Cameron hasn't rested on his laurels. He is extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about these cars that have been placed in his charge. It's fantastic to see a treasure like the museum holds to be passed into the hands of someone who will keep it well for decades to come.

Mr. Leno knows when an engine sounds right or wrong, immediately. Jay's comments about the steering makes me think of his funny remarks previously about "Armstrong" steering. This McFarlan is a real rolling work of art and style. The "FATTY" plate is cool too. Nethercutt does it again. Thanks.
Growing up in the 60's, 70's, 80's on a farm, my dad's mechanic said all our tractors had Armstrong steering 😂😂
At one time there was an accessory starter for a crank started car. I was a spring would device. You would it up and then push a button to crank the car. Armstrong Starter
The amount of knowledge Jay and his crew have is unreplaceable. Once they are gone , that knowledge will be gone with them .

The knowledge is constantly being passed down to others, Even though Jay and his mechanics are awesome and extremely knowledgeable, none of them were born with the knowledge pre-installed in their brains. They became this knowledgeable by doing alot of research and by hands on trial and error experience. As long as automobiles exist, there will also be very knowledgeable people to fix them.
Some are bringing along younger apprentices.

Even Jay had to learn. I mean obviously this car was made way before he was born so he had to learn stuff himself. There will always be people that learn and know and pass down, at least as long as these car exist.
So much love for Jay and the curators of the Nethercutt collection for trusting Jay to drive these mobile art pieces as they were meant to. I actually fear for these cars when Jay cant do this anymore as they will spend too much time behind a velvet rope

Yes, Fatty was a car guy who had gas in his veins with just enough blood to make it look red. He did all his own work, too. He didn't believe in bring his cars to the shop. HE was the shop.

I am glad that people are starting to reconsider Fatty Arbuckle's (Well there's a non politically correct name to start!) his career ending scandal in context for the time. I read old scrapbook news pieces of The Scandal in of all places, a junior high study hall in 1969/70 held in a Social Studies Classroom Thank God for the not particularly well monitored classrooms and curriculums of yore.
Oh and see the look on the guys face when jay told his mechanic to just take it off . Andhe rolls up with a pipe wrench LOL ..

I remember seeing Fatty's other car: the blue 1919 Pierce Arrow at the Blackhawk Museum in Danville, CA in the 90's.
That kid's face when that car had to be fixed while filming with Jay is priceless. Just a look of complete disappointment in himself and that car for a moment. But if your priceless 1923 car has to have an issue, there isn't a better place for it to happen since those guys know more about cars like that than anywhere else on the planet.
Nethercutt is not only cars, so we can't expect their VP to be a mechanical wizard anyhow.

Even for Jay, driving cars such as this is a great privilege. The Nethercutt collection is amazing, and this is a really wonderful way for them to share it with the public, with Jay, who already does the same with his own incredible collection.
That was awesome, beautiful car. Wish I could have experienced them on the road back then. Setting reality aside, I wish I were born around the same time as Howard Hughes, just to experience the cars and airplanes of the 20s-40s
And the society of the time - polite, honorable (the ones who were), when a handshake meant more that a written contract.

Great car Jay. I am celebrating 100 years for my 1923 Model T this year. It is amazing that these old vehicles still run so well. Wonderful engineering back then.
50 years ago I went to an auction where a Model T truck was for sale. Didn’t have a lick of paint left on it. They were still using the truck for feeding out if there was a lot of snow or water about. Would go where the more modern Land Rovers couldn’t go.

Having grown up with a grandfather who collected old cars of this era, watching this video reminds me of when I was a kid and he would be tinkering around on a Stutz or a Pierce Arrow. Such valuable information and knowledge from Jay. My grandpa would be tickled pink to see this. RIP W.J.Ridout
The Vanderbuilt(RXR tycoon) family owned one many years ago. It was kept in Hyde Park New York, but that one was a steam-powered car. I have seen it on the road back in 1980.
Someday, Jay should do a documentary on Automotive Technology. Starting with starting, breaking, steering, Transmission, Multi-valve engines etc. To little known on that group of tech development

Jay has to tell the museum how to fix their car. Knee reference is from a crash on a Indian. Ouch. Saying that to say, somewhere someone made the comment that Duesenberg and Indian and we'll add McFarlan to the list, use 1st gear to get it up to 10 mph. Shift into high. Leave your foot down until it tops out. I'm torquing to you....

Great show, Jay! Glad to see you're well. Back in the 19th century, 'Knickerbocker' was a popular reference to someone from New York, specifically Manhattan. I think the name of this car, although built in Indiana, was meant to evoke the modern wealth and power of New York -- kind of like naming a car Zurich. The look on Cameron's face when Jay told the mechanic: "Let's take it out completely" is priceless 🤣. He looked like he was gonna have kittens. He sure was sweatin' it. I would too, even with Jay Leno.
Always just before Pebble Beach , cars like this pop up in different places. It’s like early maneuvering for the concours by billionaires, the car version of Oscars season in hollywood.

Knickerbocker may be referring to NewYork. The original Dutch settlers of Manhattan wore trousers that ended at the
Knee calleed knickerbockers . The name still lives on . Where the NewYork Knicks got their name.

Fascinating. I had to look up the name and their history since the make admittedly didn't ring any bell for me on this side of the Atlantic. We learn something every day. My random thought while watching this was "My house was already 50 years old when that car was new".
Hispano Suzia predated McFarlan, and was decades ahead in technology. Imagine having people on hand who can repair starter cups. Are there a dozen people on the planet who can say truthfully they have driven both the McFarlan and Silver Ghost? Good health to Jay and may he live to be 100.

What a really special car. I had to take an intermission to read up about Fatty Arbuckle. To rise up from such beginnings and then to be dragged through that meat grinder of three trials.

Your mom was right. It came out later, but his reputation was already destroyed by that time. Just like today, there were those who refused to believe the later findings.

The look of horror on Cameron's face when Jay pointed out there was a problem with the car was priceless. Based on what I know about Jay's car collection, this might be the only garage in the world that would have the tools and expertise to fix a hundred year old car.

I've visited the Nethercutt Collection back in the mid-1980s. I remember this car being on their rotating display the day I visited. Some of the older Nethercutt Collection cars are maintained so they can be licensed and driven on the streets, at least that was what the docent of the Collection told the tour group

I knew Fatty was a car guy, but I didn't know he had a McFarlan. The McFarlan was a super expensive car, a car for the super rich who enjoyed spending their money on things they like.
It was also the peak of technology at the time though as well

'Knickerbocker' is a name given to Dutch people who were early settlers in New York and in Villages up the Hudson River. Old Families in New York were termed 'Knickerbockers.' It was a good name for a model of city car aimed at the wealthy.

Knickerbocker, apart from being a type of loose-fitting breeches, was another term (informal) for a New Yorker, so presumably a Knickerbocker cabriolet was a car designed to invoke a sense of New York wealth/affluence. Just a guess.
