KoM definitely has its faults, though part of this is due to the fact that the version we got was a watered-down version of what Eric and Tracey originally had in mind. His post about it makes for a VERY interesting read compared to what we got. eric-powell.blogspot.com/2014/05/the-godzilla-book-we-wanted-to-make.html I think the series has strong potential, and I enjoyed Woods' cynicism for the first part of the series; but development was needed, and he sadly doesn't really grow under Powell and Tracey. With the new writer, Jason Ciarmella, there was definitely a tonal shift, which is why the latter part of the series (issues 9 to 12) feel more hopeful than the dark, satirical take from earlier (issues 8 on back). It's a shame, because it would have been nice to actually see this transition happen.
This is incredible insight that I wasn't aware of - thank you so much for sharing this. I really like some of the ideas Eric and Tracey were planning to implement (like the crazy old man with the wooden dolls). It sounds like they did have more of a plan to flesh out Woods over time, but it got cut very short... and the new writers didn't seem to make much of an honest effort to tell a fleshed-out third act, but rather they just wrapped it all up as fast as possible. My criticism still stands for the first 8 issues though: I'm glad I understand the reasoning for their satire more, but it still felt like they went for a lot of low-hanging fruit (Jersey Shore, Lady Gaga) and it was WAY too heavy-handed and preachy for my tastes. I don't mind dark takes on humanity, but I personally prefer more wit and subtly. When I review the next Godzilla On-going I'll point out this link - again, thank you so much. I'm going to pin this comment for anyone else who'd like more context.
You're welcome! Glad I could be of help! :) And I agree. I think Ciarmella was only brought on board to finish it up; that was always the vibe I got when the series approached its end. Additionally, I'm also in the camp of the story being too heavy-handed with its viewpoint, but as I said already, does have some potential. Ya just have to go for something a little higher. For that matter, I have a strong feeling this story would've worked better now as opposed to 2011... Though maybe that would've been too obvious. Who knows? ;) I should also point out regarding the second series, an alternative title I know of is "Godzilla: History's Greatest Monster"; and as far as I'm aware, this title only applies the trade paperback that has all 13 issues of that series. You can find it on Amazon to check. ;)
Yo i love u so much i watched the whole monster island buddies in two day because it was so good MAD GOODDDDDDDDDDDDD i love u i subcibed and hit dat bell can i have a shout out please please PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEE
This comic series showed me that Godzilla can be a heartless, destructive, and evil monster. Well, only because i had not fully watched GMK and Gojira when these comics came out.
I haven't gotten around too reading this one uet because I heard it was awful so I was pretty suprised too see what kind of person Woods was. In rulers of Earth he is portrayed as a heroic character who has saved many people's lives, I guess that could serve as the character development he didn't get in this but it was never really built up so it was weird too see such an immediate personality shift.
I remember collecting those IDW comics not long after I joined college and it was also round about the same time I discovered Monster Island Buddies! :)
Honestly, I kinda like the quickness of the epilogue, I think it's such an intense to make everything feel better after having so many downer moments if you just had only the humanity sucks bit it'd just be depressing
Super Mechagodzilla wins the war for humanity, by taking on Godzilla and King Ghidorah at the same time? This is why Super Mechagodzilla is my favorite Kaiju.

Not sure you'll see this, but i felt like leaving a long ass comment on how much I've loved this channel, and how awesome it's been to see it grow into what it is now, with all the different content on it. But my dog has taken a dump and i need to clean it up so, MIB, thanks for the BRILLIANT content, keep it up man :)
I think if it took the art from the first 4 issues and tried to make Steve more likeable the book would be majorly improved. Though there are a lot more dual page anime beam fights then I'd like, and those spreads continuing in the last arch are a tad much. Otherwise I agree
I thought the comic was meh, the story annoyed me but I enjoyed the art enough to keep getting issues, also Orga should look at Godzilla’s Revenge for the next movie review I’d love to see that
Hey, just suggesting but, Is it possible for you guys to make a new pilot series talking about the: NES Godzilla creepypasta? If you can't make another series, could you atleast try to make a video about it?
What I expected when reading this comic in Kinokuniya (in Sydney, Australia): Awesome kaiju battles in comic form! What I read: Tasteless parodies of Jersey Shore, Lady Gaga, and PETA (which looks more like a parody from an issue of MAD magazine), an over-saturation of excessively cynical political and social commentary to the point of coronary failure (I mean, come on! Is this Godzilla or Captain fucking Planet?), and a completely unlikeable protagonist who is so cynical towards humanity, he left the cast of Jersey Shore to their deaths (I also hate Jersey Shore and PETA and I don't care about Lady Gaga (I don't hate her, I'm just OK with her, but I myself prefer Michael Jackson), but THIS?! Who are we supposed to root for?)
While I'm all for a kaiju story that's an allegory for societal problems (it's why I love Shin Godzilla so much), this comic was insufferable to read. It was so bleak, mean spirited, and up it's own ass that I dropped it after two volumes. The book seemed more interested in the whole "humanity sucks" statire than any of the stuff with the actual kaiju. You can swap Godzilla with freaking Gorgo and it'll have the same effect. And what's worse there are some nuggets of good writing here and there. But overall this series sucks.

When are you doing Monster Island Mail Bag again? I was hoping to know if MechaGodzilla had ever fell in love.
Switch Board I 5hink he won't ever do it again. I do agree with your statement.

This was the perfect time to release a new video. Damn, this was a really good day.
It feels like an edgelord wrote this comic
I'm an edgelord Hoohoohahahaahaa 😈😈👹👹😜😜🖕🖕🖕🖕
Super Mechagodzilla wins the war for humanity, by taking on Godzilla and King Ghidorah at the same time?
This is why Super Mechagodzilla is my favorite Kaiju.
Ironically this version of KG is GMK which is Weak and not entirely Evil
Basically a Godzilla comic with a watered down version of Billy Butcher from The Boys.
Butcher is already kinda that to Punisher (not water down but still)
But i can hear Karl Urban voice for Woods tho
Thy shall not interrupt a man as he rolls up a joint
IDW's Godzilla comics were the ones I grew up reading and as a kid in fourth grade, this series was freaking amazing!
That is Nostalgia talking, the comic sucks

Kaiju Menace oh yeah...kind forgot about that didn’t I?
I do not like Woods
Awesome beginning part to IDW Publishing's Godzilla comic series!!!! I'm more of a Godzilla Rulers of Earth series!!!! :)

March 20th is Zilla’s anniversary!!!!
Noice!
Yeah zilla is the best. Though his movie was not that good well it was good to me but his tv series was da bomb
and so begins godzilla fans agureing in the comments and also thanks for the heads up!
Crispin Speakman
It's not an argument if we can all agree that the TV series was good.
godzilla gojira they where gonna make a second movie but they canceled it before the first trailer came out
i love how most of these characters get more development in ROE
Awesome video, do you plan on reviewing last year’s Godzilla: rage across time comic series???
“Who are the real monsters”
I don’t know maybe the giant Kaiju that spit fire and is opthe only reasoning why all the other stuff is happening
You need to check out the Rage Across Time series. I personally really like it.
Please review the other comics from IDW... i read Rulers of Earth and it was AWESOME! i would like to hear your thoughts on it
What happens when something gets no stars
Wait are those 2 evil queens from snow white (6:51
Do you guys think the trilogy is canon to Rage Across Time?
Linkara wasn't too keen on this series in his reviews, and I kinda agree with him.
when i was younger i got one of the issues randomly because king ghidorah was on the the cover. soooo...
Can you put Godzilla The Half-Century War and Godzilla in Hell on that list of comic stories to read and review?.
Nvm I just noticed you already did. My bad...
Angirus destroys the Burlion Wall in this comic? WHERE COULD I GET THIS?!?!?!?! I NEED TO SEE THAT FOR MYSELF!!!
Awesome comic! Not as good as rulers of the earth tho

Havent read this one yet. I oughta do it soon. This looks like a very good series.
More monster island buddies episodes plz
@MonsterIslandBuddies Btw, someone made an infinity war mashup of your series (MIB).
I wish there was a Godzilla comic about a mirror universe it could have a sadistic rodan and a gigan who's extremely honourable.

Rulers of Earth is the best in the trilogy, mostly due to Matt Frank and being like a adaptation of Destroy All Monsters
kingdom of monster looks insane and sad and good
