I studied under Nagwa Saa'id of Phila. Pa. And Emar Gemal. Both influential instructors of their time. They mentioned Jamila's techniques and breaking down tempos and rhythms in Arabic music. Jamila was a World renowned teacher of her day. Thank you for your inspirational video.
I love this 😊Thank you for some background to your mother and how she interpreted it to propel bellydance forward in history as you have done yourself!!
All my 30+ years of dancing and teaching across the country, I never failed to credit Jamila and her methodology for the baseline of my Middle Eastern dance. I was so fortunate to have her teaching and the challenges she set me, and loved the (so very many) times in the studio above the Casbah where we all had those 3-class Saturdays and the instrumental classes and the teachers she brought from the Middle East. Still miss her all these years later and am still grateful. And having been there when you were just beginning to choreograph was such a kick. We should really get together soon - love you!
Wow I would have loved to study with your mother. She is incredible. I drew a picture of her when I was 14 years old and I still have it. I started trying to create costumes like hers...AND yours!!! I had taken a workshop with you in Cherry Hill NJ. Girl, I admit I lost confidence because I couldn't keep up AT ALL. 😆 But at the same time, you inspired me to push more and stop being so hard on myself. Omg Suhaila, you are truly THE best bellydancer and instructor out here still to this day. I'm so impressed with all you have done to keep the community together. "Cultural appropriation" has brought about fear and division unfortunately. But I saw you acknowledge this and was so happy that you stood up for dancers of all races, ethnicities, etc... A black list was made by members of a group called "MENAHT". Many people are on it for "cultural appropriation" among many other related "offenses". This must stop. And I thank you for speaking up. The Bellydance Superstars were predominantly white. And I remember people complaining about it. I understand but if they are dancing well and understand the cultural aspects of the dance, what's the problem? I used to be the biggest fan of BDSS. Unfortunately some of them are active in boycotting shows of people they don't agree with or like. It's become a toxic community. But I hope it passes and we can put our differences aside. Much love and respect. Thank you, both of you for your inspiration.
i realize this is an older video, but,i lived in the LA area for a couple of years and am from sanbdno county. i have been to a club that had belly dancers at one rather extreme end of the strip in hollywood. im wondering now if your mom was the dancer/owner of THAT place. i loved going there. i still love watching the new ones who have come up under what surely was your moms influence over the years. thank you for keeping up her legacy.
