Joe Piscopo worked well with the incomparable ad libbing of Rickles. Belushi could've been replaced by an office plant and the skit wouldn't have lost anything.
Funniest Rickles line to me was when he was on the Tonight Show turned to Ed McManon and said “Ed what do you do besides sink a couch?” Then there was the night he was the guest host and broke Carson’s cigarette box. The next night with Carson back as host he realized Rickles had broken it. Carson got up live had the camera crew follow him to the studio next store where Rickles was filming CPO Sharkey and turned things on it’s head by tearing Don a new one! Comedy gold look for it here on UA-cam!
Lorne wasn't in charge at this point; Dick Ebersol was. Given Lorne's hatred of adlibbing, I doubt he would have appreciated Don going off script and turning it into an offshoot of his standup routine.
One of the few times when Piscopo was truly funny. He really held is own against the onslaught that is Don Rickles. Belushi's character might as well not even have been there. Rickles and Piscopo owned this. Brilliant improv.

When this aired It was still relatively easy to get an apartment in Manhattan. I moved into a big one bedroom off of Dyckman St in '93. Now it's impossible to find anything in that same neighborhood for less than 1,500.00 a month.
