7 wood tick, Smartsole G and S tick, Chipper tick. The man speaks total sense. Has helped my game no end.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, I really enjoy these 'chat' videos you do. Very informative, easy to understand and not ramming it down our throats.
Brilliant 👍🏻
I took my 22 and 26 hybrids out of the bag and put a G430 7 and 9 woods in the bag and love them.
I've put a mini driver in the bag. Took my 3 wood out and put in two 5 woods (21/18 degrees). Replaced 5 iron with a 9 wood, 6 irons now gone for a hybrid and I've just upgraded my chipper for another ping chip r. Really transformed my game. Thanks Mark for the confirmation 👍
Is this Lou Stagner’s burner account?
Love my 7, 9, AND 11 fairway woods ⛳ Helped me go from around a 15 handicap to a 10 !!
Great stuff Mark. 100% agree with putting what works in the bag and not we wish worked. At nearly 54, my bag is something I would have laughed at 20 years ago as I thinned my blades around the course. Carrying a 5W and 2 hybrids and ditched the 3W for a chipper since 3W is no better than my 5W at my speed now anyway.
Shortening driver shaft a few years ago helped tremendously. SS around 100-105 with driver. Playing driver at 44.5in and consistency improved
Just had mine shortened to 44.5 as well. Excited to hit the range with it
It works to shorten your driver. Don't know why drivers are so long shafted
@@gordonmckay914 it’s creates the possibility for someone to hit that one drive on a simulator with huge distance. Unfortunately most amateurs remember that one perfect swing while forgetting the other 20 that wouldn’t have stayed on the golf course.
“I was hitting this thing 305 when I swung it at the store”
@@jytxs313 hope it works for you. Do you know if the length was removed from the tip or the butt of the shaft? The difference can effect the overall “stiffness” of the shaft. Also remember to consider the weight. Overall and swing weight. I use a midsize mcc+4 that offsets the weight reduction. But what works for one doesn’t work for all
No matter what they advertise as far as consistency on off center hits. Anyone wonder why that’s a main selling point? It has a significant effect on distance. Why not just try to hit the center of the face more often than pay $600 for help when you don’t?
I love the Smart Sole Chipper - I am interested in the Smart Sole Sand Wedge now too. The local courses I play are mostly hard lies with patchy "grass" (mowed weeds usually).
Was fitted for my woods ended up with 10.5, 16.5 and 22.5 degrees a lovely combination
Great video. I cut 2" off if my driver shaft! I love it. So consistent. I haven't lost a ball in the last 6 rounds. I also use the Cleveland chipper and the other 2 wedges as well in black. I love them
I’ve also got the 3 Cleveland smart sole wedges and love them!
Four out of Five (well 3 1/2), for me! Driver shaft is 44.25 inches. Have a 58* wide sole Dual Wedge (Sand/Flop). A 45* Chipper, and a 20* 3H (used in place of a 7W).
Prior to making a drastic change to your driver, if you'd like to try the short driver first...just choke down on the grip. Same concept, and mostly the same result. Choking down on the grip always improves your feel. Then if you like it, you can make the adjustment permanent.
Thanks Mark! 44.5" driver, 7 wood, Cleveland chipper and large sole wedges in the bag for a while now. Looking into arm-lock putter as well. Other helpful clubs in bag include 6 hybrid and hybrid irons.
Bought the chipper almost soley based on your review... love it. have not regretted the decision in the least... thanks MC!!
I put new grips on this year, and that really made more of a difference than I thought it would
Hi Mark, can you do a video say throw 20 balls around the green randomly for 9 holes, hit 10 with the chipper and 10 how you would normally play the shot and average the strokes gained to hole out from the chips or even show your strokes gained on shotscope with your chipper versus before.
It all makes lots of sense, Ive chipped for years using flatter faced irons, I can bump one in from 100yards with a 5i if its hyper windy. Older folk to the game don't experiment enough. 'Lets find out' like kids do is a great mantra. If you haven't tried a full T shot with ideally your mates putter, you're not imaginative enough.
Brilliant video! I have all these clubs in my bag including a 9 wood. Anything to make the game a bit easier. Thanks Mark!
Love it. Thanks for watching.
Well I have a Cleveland Smartsole SW and the Cleveland version 3 Smartsole Chipper (is there much difference between the 3/4 version) plus Wilson D9 7 wood and a Callaway 9 wood and love them all just need the weather to get out there and play in rainy old UK
Mark -- The C club believe it or not is super versatile and does a great job pitching in wet conditions. Often I use it as a gap wedge.
I have a Adams 19 degree hybrid. Love that club
I changed to a shorter driver shaft last year .. it made a world of difference my dispersion tighten up and I hit long drives when I did with my standard length but more consistent.. and the chipper is a game changer for me too .. thanks bruh for the great content
Choking up just a little bit on my driver and hybrids has helped me a lot
I play a shorter driver shaft. Does it make sense that I can’t play it ahead in my stance? But have to play it closer to logo?
Spot on! My chipper and thick soled wedges have really improved my green side shots. Next step is replacing the long iron with a fairway wood.
Bought a Cleveland SS4 chipper used over the winter, need to get it out on the course for a go
I've had an Alien2 wedge in my bag for at least 10 years...One swing out of the sand every time... It's also great for heavy rough...Great video.
I have a chipper, bought a 7w to compliment my Hy-Wood this year and have CBX Wedges. Trying to make my game easier to repeat.
We have matching bags sir lol
Power to you, Sir 🙏 Top vlog, thank you
I just put the mizuno s23 in the bag, surprised not to see more videos from the big channels about them, they're great
Hi Mark, great video-have you/could you do a review on best chipper and best large soled wedge?
4 out of 5 for me. Shortened my driver (LTDX) by an inch, huge improvement in accuracy for virtually no difference in distance. 7 wood has been in my bag for years. Go-to in so many situations. Cleveland Chipper after watching your review video a while back and finally, picking up my CBX Zipcore wedges and parking my Jaws MD5’s tomorrow after trying my sons. I’ve swapped out my putter too in recent months, old Ping to a modern Spider X aka Harry Potter’s Wand. If there’s kit out there to make golf easier why wouldn’t you give it a go?
QUESTION FOR YA : I am having a tough time deciding between the TITLEIST TSR 1 or 2 or the STEALTH 2 HD or standard....i know all my specs....i have to order on line with no chance of trying out in person..... what are your thoughts between these clubs.... i want forgiving and distance.....I am 58 and my swing speed is 88-94 mph with a fairly straight high ball and above average spin...... am a 9-11 handicap...for the shafts i decided for the Titleist TENSEI BLUE 55 regular flex.....if i go with Stealth 2 the UST PROFORCE V2 HL....your thoughts ?
midsize grip and length will be 44 1/2 inches.....thx...cheers from Canada
I would like to add that you can have shorter driver even if you are tall. I’m 196cm and have 1 inch shorter than standard. Improved a lot both in accuracy and length… 😊
Any ideas on why I hit my 5 wood nicely (around 205 carry) but cannot hit a hybrid? Means I currently have a bit of a gap between my 5iron and 5 wood. Listened to your recent Pod and considering a 7 wood if I can't figure out the hybrid.
i'm willing to try all these and even the hybrid irons but need to know what swing to use do i use my usual hybrid swing as i'm pretty good with those or my iron swing which is rubbish !!
I game the new Ping chipper. I NEVER thought I would, but it is such a great trouble club. It carries like chipping with a 9-iron, but with a putter's lie angle. It really works well.
Great tips thanks
Great vid. Can add a one length hybrid to this aswell. Fairway finder, low puncher out of trees that you can work either way and for chipping too.
played to a +2 handicap growing up with a cut down driver shaft... 125 mph club head speed, didn't feel the loss in distance at all.
This is a great video. I love my shortened driver shaft. Strikes are better and I’m not fussed about the length since my speed is still the same. Quite frankly, I love how the head of the club looks bigger! Thanks for this Mark! I’ve been looking for a 7W to try but the shops around here don’t exactly have them at the ready…
Ping make great 7 woods.
brilliant video - ive already got a 9w and and easier to hit 5w, also getting an inch taken off my driver shaft. Got to make this game a bit easier...
Just ordered an old 7 wood off eBay to see how I get on as thinking of changing the top end of my bag. Interested in the shortening of the driver shaft to see if that helps me!
Genuine question here: how do people set up their bags? I would love a 7-wood but it dont really fit my gapping. Now playing:
Driver
2-hybrid
5-wood
4-pw
50, 56, 60
Putter
Mark, can you please ask Cleveland on behalf of me and a few Smart Sole sand wedge enthusiasts: we'd love the Smart Sole sand wedge to have a similar groove face to RTX/CBX wedges to increase spin. Also, a 60 degree version.
Thank you 🙏
My driver shaft is actually half inch shorter and it has made huge improvement in my strikes.
7 wood , best kept secret. 2nd best kept secret is driver shaft at 44.5"
Agree
TM Mini driver, TM Stealth HD irons, Cleveland Smart Sole chipper and wedges…Scotty Cameron balance shaft putter
I've got 3 of these:
Driver is on a 43.5" shaft-never going longer my average distance and fairways hit are both up
Ping G 7wd-love it, so easy to play.
Chipper-still trying to figure it out, I get very different spin on it at different times for some reason. Can't get the run-out reliable. Would love to see an issue on how to actually play it correctly in all those different lies (ball placement/stroke/etc.)
Got both a 7 and 9 wood in my bag right now, TaylorMade SIM 2 Max
Excellent info mark.
I have tried the armlock putter and it is really good inside 20ft, but slower greens/longer putts I couldn't judge distance as well, not to mention when you play in the UK with layers/waterproofs and its windy af its not as comfy for me
I just purchased a 7 wood and cant wait to use it.
Great video can you give more information on the chipper as Clevland have so many cheers bro.
You would love my bag 🤣
Using a Super Stroke Wrist Lock Grip and a longer shaft as armlock putter
50 degree CBX Wedge
Smart Sole Sand Wedge
Cleveland HyWood 🥰
Great video 👍🏻
My putter is the Bloodline center-shafted stand-up putter. I'll never go back to a conventional putter--this one is impossibly easy to line up. I'd consider a longer-shafted version if they'd make it, but you can't just re-shaft the one you have since the shaft is custom-designed (graphite, hollow, grip built-in) to permit the putter to stand up on its own behind the ball.
Good one Mark. Thanks
Great vid mark as always!! Thank you
Hav e an XE1 sand wedge in the bag, Gets out of every bunker with ease, and excellent for popping it over bunkers , lands soft on the green.
I have a Callaway heavenwood, my favorite club in the bag.
Me too. My favorite club
Distance of a 5 wood, choke down its a 7W
The best $37 on a club I have ever spent
I'm struggling with hoodies on a golf course
My best cheat club ever: TaylorMade Mini Driver. I've been gaming them for more than a decade. Trackman gives me 270 yds (carry and rollout) with my Titleist TSR3. The TM gives me 250 on Trackman. This is due to the shorter shaft and higher launch angle, but it's not the same as clubbing down to a 3 wood (which I don't carry anyway). I'm considering dumping the driver completely in favor of the TM Mini Driver.
My cheat club is my ping g425 7 hybrid. 34°. Fantastic around the greens. Long enough to play bogey golf easily. Does me just fine
The way I shorten the driver shaft is choke down on the club…what a novel idea…got that from watching Lydia Ko as she chokes down on every club basically…
Like the chipper club...Cleveland Chippers should work for me....Thanks...
Great video …. Thanks.
I have been playing an armlock putter for over a year now and it has made a huge difference. Just ordered a 7wood, I had one years ago and now I’m deciding to give it another crack so we will see what happens with it
Great video, thanks
You are welcome
I've got a 1inch above standard driver I'm 6ft4/5, considering my height do I need the longer shaft or could I go shorter? 🤷🏼♂️
I don't want a 7-wood. I game a 3-Hybrid (Ping G425). Instead of a 4-iron, my set of Wishon EQ1-NX has a 4-Hybrid that is the same length (and weight and swing weight, and loft angle, and MOI) as the rest of my irons set. Instead of a 3-Wood I game a Mini Driver. If I put the chipper in the bag, I take out either the regular driver or the lob wedge. It depends on the course.
Ordered my Ping 7 wood today.
I have the Smart Sole Sand, Gap and Chipper, a 4h, 5h, 6h, a Cleveland 7 wood and a Paradym X. Work smarter not harder.
That hoodie is 🔥🔥🔥
7,9 and 11 woods are mine.
1:38 I had a more forgiving Cleveland wedge and hated it. It felt…heavy, and like I was swinging a brick duct taped to a golf shaft. So I switched back to a players wedge and actually spent put the practice in and I’d say I’m an adequate wedge player. I still duff some shots and have the occasional hossle rocket. But 🤷🏻♂️. What I am considering is getting a high toe full face sand wedge and lob wedge to maximize missed shots in deep lies.
Great tips Mark. Would choking down on driver have same effect as cutting it?
Yes it can, often not as good but I defo would come down for a straighter better struck shot.
With the driver shaft can you not just grip down to shorten it?
Also, shorter fairway clubs are easier to control and make better contact!
another great video mate
had an arm lock putter to test, I'm still gaming my T22 Newport 2 but the Grandsport 35AL over the winter has definitely firmed up my stroke will make an appearance if my putting drops, feels like a cheat stick inside 10ft
Love gaming a 7 wood on top of that
Looking to add a 4 wood and 7 wood to my bag in the next month or so. I have a low ball flight as it is.
Playing UK links golf we have been adapting existing clubs to play chip and run for years. Chippers are the clubs we’ve been trying to find…!
I work in the industry and tell people all the time stop letting ego hurt your game and wallet. Most players should be carrying cavity back wedges and would benefit from a chipper. I see a lot more 7 woods now too. I actually have 2 original callaway big bertha 7 woods in my repair room. That club just works.
Is there a big difference between simply choking down the grip on a standard driver compared to replacing the shaft with a shorter one?
Choking down can work for sure. Depends how you react to it as you do have now more weight above your hand. 👍
I had never even heard of a 9 wood. I'll have to check the 7 and 9 wood out as I really can't hit long irons anymore anyway...
Has Lou, the StatHole seen this video yet? Wondering how many of these has he implemented apart from the 7 & 9 woods?
My chipper is my 8 iron. It saves so many shots and I need all the help I can get.
1:47... 👌🏽
I was waiting for that Chipper lol
I’m a 35yr old male with a 7w/9w/6H/7H and getting fit for my armlock putter on Wednesday 😂😂 no way I’m switching out any of my miuras for smart sole wedges. They can go in the back up bag lol
shortened my TM driver a few yrs ago from 45” to 44” when I got fitted for a new shaft. Didn’t like it AT ALL and went back to 45” and went about FIXING my swing path instead!
As I get older my pride is forsaken and I play easier clubs and think,"Why didn't I do this sooner?" Thanks Mark.
As a fitter, trying to convince old men to not play 3 woods, 3-5 irons, and 60° wedges, and increase the loft of their driver is the hardest part of my job
7 woods rock
My XXIO X 9 WOOD HITS AS FAR AS MY OLD G400 7 WOOD
LOVELY CLUB
I'm short in length 1.64m and I tried short 43 inch driver shaft... It was a nightmare for me.... My current driver shaft is 45 1/2 and find fairway most the time and much longer average of 260m drive
I literally tried a 3 wood shaft in my driver tonight before I saw this video. Lost an average of 2-3mph, which is very little considering it’s a 41.5 inch shaft vs. a 45 inch driver shaft. More testing required, but who knows, I may never go back!
So, hilariously, I have literally every club mentioned in my bag... tells you something about my caliber of golf. Callaway Sure-out wedge, slightly shorter Sim2 Max D 12 degree (albeit delofted a bit), Cleveland chipper, and last year started putting armlock (using triple track).
Only thing I don't have is a 7 wood, because frankly, I have a Hy-wood and a hybrid to bridge beetween it and my 5 iron and that's even easier than a 7 wood because the shaft length is shorter. I was surprised not to see the Hy-Wood listed here, honestly, given that Mark has previously used it.
I love my HyWood, but it's a 5W replacement with the ability to play some REALLY mucky lies. The Loft is the key to the 7W being a Cheat Code - my bad HyWood shots are very flat, but if you make contact at all with a 7W it's going upstairs.
@@ellomdian Interesting point - I agree with you that the Hywood is more of a 5 wood replacement, or a 3 wood replacement that just doesn't go as far. The reason I think it belongs here is that if you simply cannot hit fairway woods, you probably have nothing in the bag for your 2nd shot on a par 5 or a long par 4 approach, and it seems like everyone in that spot who hits the Hywood thinks, "Wow, one of my biggest problems is immediately solved".
I guess maybe I'm not understanding the circumstance in which the 7 wood really earns its place in the bag. If you take a bad swing with a 5 wood and hit the ground before the ball or top it, your results won't be all THAT much better with the 7 wood, and when you do hit it, a hybrid (which is easier) is going about the same length. Maybe I just need to borrow one from somewhere for a couple of rounds and see what I'm missing.
Instead of a chipper I have a One Length 3 hybrid and probably 40% of my shots around the golf course are with that thing.
I grip down to the bottom of grip on driver for better performance. Nearly cured my slice.
