  • I am a long time X-Men universe and character fan. I have been buying, reading and collecting X-Men and X-men related titles since the early 90's with Jim Lee's X-Men. Recently though, I have been a bit underwhelmed by the previews of the relaunch of all of the X-Titles so much so that I am wondering whether or not to cut the cord when it comes to buying the new comic book day releases. In this video, I discuss my thoughts on the topic.

    I collected from UXM #280-350... and back issues to cover #94-279... all the spin-off books.... mind books were a bit cheaper in those days, but it still was a challenge to spend 10$ on 4-5 titles a week to keep up with Xmen content. I was surprised with how much i didnt miss it, occasionally i'd jump back on to read a new story and they can't compare to Claremont's run or the seeds that carried Lobdell's run fixing some of his outstanding plotlines. I don't think you'd miss it as much as you might fear.

      I also did the same during the Joe Mad dominant run from 300-350. I stopped back then after he left on 350 for a long time. I eventually years later started buying them again. I agree, I don't think I will miss the titles especially since there are no artists I like on the books. The Claremont through Lobdell was a magical stretch of great stories.

    Ultimately, you need to follow your heart and do what is right for you. If I feel the need to step away from a character or characters for a while I just do it, I can always go back and read those issues I missed later should I want to or I can simply wait until I feel the time is right to jump back in. I recently dipped out of the current Daredevil run as it wasn't doing anything for me. I know someday I'll be back because I love Daredevil, but it's cool for both of us to go off on our own for awhile. I am more writer and/or character focused than you describe yourself as being and several of the new X-titles interest me. I will be giving X-Men, Uncanny, Storm, and Wolvy a shot.

      Thanks for the comments! Some very good points. Since I am more of an artist driven collector, not having any artists that I like on these new books definitely makes it easy for me to step away from the X-Titles. It's too bad because I do really love me some X-Men. But, I also have been on a real back issue push as of late, so I can just devote then money I would have spent on the X-Titles to buying some quality back issues that are on my list. :)

    I collect older stuff but will read newer stuff digitally.

      That sounds like a very good plan. I would be cool with paying the $6ish dollars a month for Marvel Unlimited to read the new comics digitally.

    I quit collecting in 1993, and started up again in 2022. At first, I just went with the 3 new X titles at the time (Legion of X, Immortal X-Men, and X-Men Red). Eventually, I started adding titles while also buying a ton of back-issues. For instance, I originally had Uncanny X-Men 144-318. Now, I have everything from issue 107 on, including later volumes (plus 95, 97, 102, 104, and 105). But what's killing me is new issues, because I expanded to all X-related titles, plus Ghost Rider, Spider-Man, Daredevil, and anything that looks fun (e.g. Harriet Tubman: Demon Slayer). I recently made the mistake of deciding to get all of the "Blood Hunt" comics and tie-ins, so now I'm spending $50 to $65 every week on new issues. Once that event is over, I really need to cut way back on new comics and focus on back issues.

      Wow, you took a really long time off from collecting. That's great that you were able to back fill so much of your Uncanny run all the way to 107. I am working on that myself right now.
      I hear you about the weekly expense when it comes to buying new books that look interesting. That's a lofty goal of getting all the Blood Hunt tie-ins. I definitely had no interest in doing that. I am only buying the main Blood Hunt event title because Pepe Larraz is drawing it and I love his artwork. I am spending on average $40-$50 a week on new books and am looking forward to dropping that total.

    I do Uncanny X-men and amazing spiderman. The recent spiderman #50 was a ten dollar book with variant covers. I'm done. I'd rather just work on my original runs. I'm ditching the modern era.

      Yeah, I can completely understand and feel very similar. I bought that Amazing Spider-Man #50 as well. $10 for a new book feels like too much. I have been having a lot more fun searching out old back issues I need lately.

      $10 for a comic book? wth... was it at least some decent page count?

    • @MinnesotaComicGeek-if2vn
      @MinnesotaComicGeek-if2vn  Місяць тому

      It did have a higher page count, something like 80-100 pages. But, it still doesn't feel great spending $10 on a new release comic book. That should be a price for smaller trades that have a harder cover stock paper cover, you know a little more quality to it.

    I have made the same decision as you, I have decided to read new comics digitally and invest in back issues from the 70’s and early 80’s. I personally did not enjoy the Krakoan era and feel that it became a jumbled mess and a money grab, and it makes me feel that the future will be more of the same. I am very sad about this decision because I have every x title made since issue 54 of the first series, but the cost of the books coupled with the poor stories I feel that it has become an unwise investment of my hard earned money

      Yeah, that's too bad that such a longtime reader as yourself has soured on a series of titles that you have collected for so long. Unfortunately, I think you are right about a lot of things going forward. I am definitely going to skip buying almost all of the new x-titles. I might give the Phoenix book a shot because the art looks pretty decent.
