Part of what made the original work so well was that it was a great presentation of the chief virtues of Stoicism. We see Maximus go from an ideal soldier who wants nothing more than to go home to his family to a broken man on a search for vengeance and then returning to a man of virtue as he puts aside his desire for selfish vengeance in persuit of justice. This was not the first idea for a sequel. Originally, the protagonist from the first movie was opposed to find himself in hell or the afterlife, and have to fight his way out. As outlandish as that is, it would have been at least original, and not a straight remake
Well, they'd just have to put a scene early in the movie where the priests do some divination, some haruspicy or something, then look up and say "Somehow, Lucius has returned."
That goes for all of Hollywood, my guy. My best hope is a few very wealthy... Very based veteran a tors start putting parallel studios together and make really great indie films.. or at least something outside the grasp of Hollywood's claws. No creativity. No originality. These younger generations who grew up inside on the internet lacking real life experiences as children are now the writers. And it shows.
Was Lucius the Son of Maximus? I think he was the son of a different, deceased Roman General. Maximus just took a shine to him because he was the Emperor's grandson and represented innocence
@@Alexq79- I can't imagine Maximus cheating on his wife. It was very plain that he was the honorable man in the story, and the whole plot is based around him getting revenge for the death of his wife and son.
Not having seen the new movie, I assume that Gary is telling us how its script portrayed Lucious. That the terrible writers HAD to make a connection with Maximus and so wrote it that Lucious was his son. If this is true, it just highlights how talentless they are.

instead of gladiator 2, they could have made something unique from the Roman era. There are hundreds of years worth of historical material to pick from. The life of Constantine, the fall of Rome by the Goths, the rise of the Byzantine Empire and the split from the Roman Empire. There is so much history that is over looked.
Who is 'they' Ridley Scott? If he did that, everyone would be like 'No Gladiator 2?' They did it because of the publicity a sequel would get, no matter how utterly pointless it is.

In my version of Gladiator. Maximus is not the father of Lucious and he never cheated on his wife. So no I will not see this movie. They could have just made another Gladiator movie that had nothing to do with the previous movie.
As a fellow Irishman I can say that Paul Mescal is the worst actor I've ever seen in anything. I've never seen him in anything before and never want to see him in anything again. Absolutely atrocious performance.
Well the Italian Coast is a lot closer to Rome than Africa, and the Nile Crocodile is a freshwater reptile. Oh jesus lol why am I injecting any logic into a movie that would do this at all, they could have put The Meg in there along with Sharknados and they would have fit right in.
@@paulinegallagher7821 Funny, but historically the Romans did bring many African animals to the colosseum for fighting, including crocodiles and hippos.
So, Lucilla is the sister of Commodus and the daughter of Marcus Aurelius, Lucius is the son of Lucilla and her first husband, Lucius Verus, who was a Roman Emperor and, Maximus, he is a general who becomes a gladiator and is portrayed as a father figure to Lucius, but he is NOT his biological father.
He really isn't though - and they even towed the line of this in the movie. Badly. Very badly. Talking about how he could be incestuous between the brother and sister. And there were rumours etc. Then next minute he's just magically accepted as definitely Maximus son. There was so much bad in this movie and that's just one glaring example.
Watched this movie tonight at the cinema, only because i meet a long time friend, my thoughts: The main actor was a bad choice and should have been swapped with pedro pascal. The movie tries TOO hard to copy the first one (nobody wants a reminder, we watched the first one more than 50 times) 90% of the time and it is absolutely scandalous. It lacks ORIGINALITY. Terrible photography, the choice of emperors is a COMEDY. I hope for their sake they don't gain anything from this disgrace, about denzel… his name thanks to his past will absolutely not be ruined, but he could avoided this disgrace, if they stuck to another atmosphere trying not to copy the first one it could have been a masterpiece. after the rhino scene I wanted to leave the room.
his supposed father lucius verus was gay, and lucilla's son was born shortly after her and maximus stopped seeing each other. this is one of the few points of the movie that is plausible. the rest is nonsense. lucilla died 2 years after marcus aurelius, the movie is 16 years after the death of marcus aurelius, yet caracalla and geta didn't rule until 30 years after marcus aurelius. numidia was conquered 300 years prior, macrinus was never in rome while emperor and he wasn't black. just a few problems.
@@saganrox6163I think his murdered son was a lot younger than lucius so I have no problem with that, it would mean max was involved with lucilla (is that her name?) and then went on to another relationship but I do dislike the whole idea, that would mean that in the first movie she could've given maximus something to fight for and at the very least not let him die without knowing the truth. This movie actually hurts the first movie, in the end of it they make it sound like rome is on the right path and then as soon as the sequel begins oh nevermind things just got worse anyway, well great. And what about Lucilla sending her kid away and keeping her important status in rome instead of running away with him? This movie is just dumb Sorry for my rant. Loved the sharks with freaking laser beams attached to their heads though
Gladiator 2 "Husband, I am a strong independent woman. I will fight, with a bow and arrow (queef)." "Wife, you're so strong and independent, into the battle you go with your bow and arrow" (inhales). Woman dies "Noooo. Wife. Rome, you are to blame" (slurp slurp).
Jurassic Park CGI was and is spectacular. Its used somewhat remotely though, actually. And practical effects its ALWAYS better in my opinion. It solidifies whats happening on the screen, it makes it more grounded yet at the same time more impressive. CGI get rids of all the obstacles and many of the "if buts and should we really?", it removes true old school craftmanship. Alien was literallt puppets, and its one of the most atmospheric movies ive ever seen. Aliens was also mostly puppets (if i remember it correctly). Puppets somewhat forcer these close up, short horrific shots of the alien monster.
Dude I just saw Jurassic Park in HD with my kids recently, and I was *amazed* at how well that CG has held up. Back to the Future, by contrast, was never a movie I complained or wondered about the special effects, but when you watch that in HD, you can see tears in the rotoscope overlays at some points, which I didn't expect and was really disappointed by (artifacts of the media translation process, I know, but ... man, the VCR actually looked better, there's gotta be *something* we can do to preserve that film). But I expected some sort of similar artifacts on my JP Blu-Ray and nope, it's perfect.
Picked up Gladiator on 4K since it was one of the first R rated movies I saw with my Dad as a child. Figured it would be money better spent than wasting my time with the sequel.
Nah, they didn't fill the Colosseum with water, not during those times. The original design could have been flooded, but by Domitian's reign the entire substructure was added and there's no way to waterproof all that; moving platforms, lifts, tunnels, trapdoors, gates. Sea battles would have been held in a Naumachia specially designed to host those. Trajan's Naumachia probably, right about where Vatican City is these days.. although I suppose Circus Flaminius would work too, it could be flooded, it'd be closer, and should still have been in operation during that time (a bit outside my are of expertise).
I saw it Saturday and for 2 and a 1/2 hours I was rolling my eyes or shaking my head in disgust. It wasn't the worst movie I'd ever seen, but the plot, the acting, the casting, and the fight scenes were trash. They kept inserting quotes from the original as well because Hollywood writers are pretentious, incompetent DEI hires incapable of originality.
You mentioned the unnecessary animated remakes of older movies, but what about the unnecessary live-action remakes of older animated movies? Why the hell did they make a live-action, shot-for-shot remake of "How To Train Your Dragon"?! The original is a classic for kids (and some adults) of that era. So like with "The Lion King", "The Jungle Book", and "The Little Mermaid", they apparently felt the need to milk the IP for a little more dough. Not by making something creative that complements the original, but by recreating the original in a different format It's clear to everyone Hollywood is running out of ideas
I don't think they've run out of ideas. The ideas are still there, but they're afraid of taking risks. This is why they keep coming back to stuff that were successes when they had the balls to bring out new stuff
You forgot 'Mulan', 'Peter Pan' (kinda), 'Aladdin', 'Beauty and the Beast' and the upcoming 'Moana' and 'Lilo and Stitch'. Judge them for all they have besmirched.
Judge Doom would be so proud of what Hollywood is doing the the legacy of these animated classics. Resulting in many of these once great animation studios shutting down, and being sold to Cloverleaf Transit.
Idk what everyone is on about. It may not be iconic as the first but Gladiator 2 was a great time. Denzel’s Machiavellian-like performance elevated the filmed and kept me engaged. Idk if folks were not happy his character was black, but do some research most of the Roman Emperors were not all white lol
Modern Hollywood doesn't consider Italians separate from our blond, blue eyed, 6.5 ft tall European brothers in Northern Europe. I'm as white, according to them, as some blond Norwegian whose ancestors raided the English mainland in 1025 and burnt the monasteries. The fact that Italians are SOUTHERN EUROPEANS doesn't mean a thing to those losers. Hollywood doesn't like history and doesn't know real history and therefore makes garbage movies about Ancient Roman.
The fact they needlessly made him Maximus's son is what made me decide I'm not going to watch this film. It retroactively damages Maximus's entire motivations from the first movie. I'm glad they put this information in the trailer so I could decide not to have anything else ruined for me.
I was debating this on instagram, Maximus had something with Lucilla and from that perhaps you could say Lucius came to be... It's not far fetched, probably he didnt know so his motivations are intact he had a wife and he had a son murdered
@@leviathan19 It's plausible and not far-fetched. But it is also gratuitous, unneccessary, and retroacively makes Maximus - the pinaccle of what it means to be a man, Father, and Husband - an absent Father to another kid.

I think he currently just takes the script that someone gives him and starts filming, without critically analyzing the script. I remember that the first Gladiator had a really bad script, and he hired other screenwriters and worked with them to rewrite the script. It doesn't seem like something he would do today.
And what exactly were you expecting out of this movie? You sound like someone who just watches anything for no reason at all. At what point in the trailer did you go oh yeah this is a must watch?
Gladiator was not "mid", it bottom-line SUCKED. It's not "a solid 5/10", it's a "very generous 2/10" because imo, great sets do not make up for sh*tty everything-else. Writing, acting, casting, CGI, it was all sh*t. The only nice thing about it were the sets but then again, except Numeria, we *literally* saw everything else in the 1st movie. Denzel is the sh*ttiest performance of the movie and an insult to Oliver Reed's (who is surely turning in his grave) Proximo. Gladiator *never* needed a sequel. Anyone who says the movie is "okay" needs to get their head checked and learn to appreciate proper movies. It's okay to make unrealistic movies, Gladiator movies, action movies, etc. But not okay to copy-paste a whole premise and try to succeed an all-time classic that did not need a sequel.
I saw Gladiator for the first time last year and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The acting, the writing, the set pieces, the emotion.... It's definitely in my top 10 favorite movies now.
I'm glad this channel exists. I wrote on Letterboxd in my own review that this disgrace of a movie is getting away for what it is. A shameless sequel that is actually punching the viewer in the face. It's making fun of them every minute. The viewer in this movie is represented by that monkey. And Ridley Scot is taking a dump on our faces.
I actually went to the cinema with zero or more like minus expectations knowing they will propably butch the legend of my youth but to my surprise I was actually ok after the movie. I think my attitude was the main factor but still I enjoyed it as a lose what if movie rather than a strict continuation. Bless you all
That scene in Gladiator when he asks "are you not entertained" follows on from a previous deleted scene when Proximo tells Maximus to entertain the crowd, and it made a lot more sense in that context. Why it was deleted beats me. Great, humorous review btw👍
i actually thought Gladiator 2 was so well done (completely unintentionally). my take away is i always wondered how the great empires of past collapsed. watching Gladiator is like modern western civilization in the 90's (the Peak). and Gladiator 2 is western society now on a steep down hill run to collapse. society to busy been mentally ill to actually govern or be productive.

The bittersweetness of the ending was that he did finally get to return to his family again after his service to Rome was done, but he could only do so in death.

Lucius is the son of Lucilla and her first husband, Lucius Verus, who was a Roman Emperor and,
Maximus, he is a general who becomes a gladiator and is portrayed as a father figure to Lucius, but he is NOT his biological father.

of course they changed it
his supposed father lucius verus was gay, and lucilla's son was born shortly after her and maximus stopped seeing each other. this is one of the few points of the movie that is plausible. the rest is nonsense. lucilla died 2 years after marcus aurelius, the movie is 16 years after the death of marcus aurelius, yet caracalla and geta didn't rule until 30 years after marcus aurelius. numidia was conquered 300 years prior, macrinus was never in rome while emperor and he wasn't black. just a few problems.
Seriously, doesn't Lucious being Maximus' son cheapen the revenge arc of having his family killed? Anyone else feel that?

Nah, they didn't fill the Colosseum with water, not during those times. The original design could have been flooded, but by Domitian's reign the entire substructure was added and there's no way to waterproof all that; moving platforms, lifts, tunnels, trapdoors, gates. Sea battles would have been held in a Naumachia specially designed to host those. Trajan's Naumachia probably, right about where Vatican City is these days.. although I suppose Circus Flaminius would work too, it could be flooded, it'd be closer, and should still have been in operation during that time (a bit outside my are of expertise).
They held naval battles during the inauguration of the colosseum.

i actually thought Gladiator 2 was so well done (completely unintentionally). my take away is i always wondered how the great empires of past collapsed. watching Gladiator is like modern western civilization in the 90's (the Peak). and Gladiator 2 is western society now on a steep down hill run to collapse. society to busy been mentally ill to actually govern or be productive.
Imagine James Cameron being like Ridley Scott. Titanic 2: The Resinking.
He is like Scott. Have you seen the Avatar sequel?
*Resinkening
@@RCAvhstapeHe is nothing like Scott. Cameron made money with his avatar sequel at least. Can you say the same about Scott? He hasn't made a bad movie as well.
Cameron is WORSE than Scott. Dropped Terminator to make silly Avatar and Avatar 2 that are the SAME story with 3 more to go and I'm tired of that world already. Making the the other tribe pacific islanders made me roll my eyes. Where are they going to go next, outer space? This is Scott's only sequel and I knew it would suck but at least he's tries different things.
@@midnighthour733 Scott has made some stinkers in the last decade and a half or so, but he also made The Martian, which is fantastic, and over his career he's made more iconic films than Cameron in my opinion. To me, Cameron's last truly awesome film was Aliens, which was 1986, and everything since then has been okay at best.
If you've ever watched Gladiator.. you would realize within one hour that nothing will ever top this masterpiece of a film. Why do they feel the need to fucking trash everything.
It's simple: Hollywood has nothing anymore. They've pissed off their audiences, and they're creatively bankrupt.
First five minutes. The scene with Maximus and the robin. No words. A world of meaning.
@lechatel seriously. I was gonna say the first ten minutes but an hour is fair. Joaquin Phoenix is a fucking legend.
@@ULTRAVISTA. treat it as a standalone film and it's more watchable
