This video is a complete overview of the Kwik Plug Roof Patch. This is my follow-up video to: Tree Fell On Roof- How To Make A Temporary Leakproof Repair. I will put a link down below and at the end of the video.
Here's a product description from the manufacturer:
"The Gibraltar Building Products Kwik Plug Roof Patch makes it easy to cover pre-existing holes, 8 in. x 8 in., in your home's roof, such as vents, or holes caused by storm or animal damage. This patch installs easily with nails and resists cracking and weakening in all temperature extremes. The Kwik Plug is made from durable galvanized steel and OSB."
-12 in. x 12 in. Patch eliminates the need for cutting plywood
-Resists cracking in extreme cold and weakening in heat
-Intended for holes no larger than 8 in. x 8 in.
-Easily installs with just 8 nails
My overall opinion is that the Kwik Patch works very well and is much faster than trying to frame out the hole and fit in a piece of OSB. This method is very handy because all the work is done on top of the roof and not inside the attic or garage.
If you find this video interesting, please help support my channel by giving it a "Thumbs Up". Thanks and have a great day!

By the way. I'm a carpenter over here in San Diego. And what alot of people don't know is how we carpenters are always learning new skills. Thank you for this lesson. 🖒
That's true. You're welcome.
Thanks Mark for your great video. Your video saved me from a $1,000 repair. All items were purchased from Lowes for about $100. Thanks again. Rob
Oh wow, glad to hear that!
Got a random hole in my roof above the garage today. I patched it using flashing the way you showed in your other video and am ordering this product to do the permanent fix. As a new homeowner who is learning how to DIY, your videos are tremendously helpful and saved me a lot of stress. And the $800 someone wanted, which then was bumped down to $675 when I laughed at them at the $800 price. I laughed at $675 also.
Holy cow! That's a steep price. Thanks for letting me know, I appreciate knowing that these videos are helpful to you.
@@MarkThomasBuilder It just goes to show how some folks really try to take advantage of those who don't know a lot about DIY. Obviously you've earned a subscriber! Many thanks!
@@piscesdreams1023 well I wouldn't say they are taking advantage. I think roofing is a skill. And it's a dangerous job. Yea sure you can charge them 150 prob for the job and you can also fall of someone's roof. It's our job as consumers to price around. If someone will pay 800 that's what I'll charge too lol.
@insaneguitarboyw some people don't understand variables
How big was that hole? Half inch?
i got an estimate from a company here in NC to basically patch a hole where an old gas furnace vent pipe protruded - estimate was to remove pipe and patch over hole. $675 .
Guess what? I'm going to be up on the roof this weekend fixing this myself - THANKS AND THUMBS UP!! Great video - I can do this.
Wow, you will save a lot of money. Hope it goes well!
That happen to me too and I fixed by myself. Thanks for the video.
We have 2 holes from 6/18/2023- 90 mile winds in Tulsa, Ok. We did a quick fix with roofing tar and pieces of tarp. Your video inspired me to tackle a permanent fix myself. Thankyou!
Wow, that's some wind! A friend from Ok said the state song even mentions the wind, lol. I'm glad this video was helpful. Hope it goes well!
I've got an old house, it's probably 100 yrs old that was moved & renovated. Just recently we had a major ice storm that brought down some pretty big limbs. And we live in Mississippi not well known for snow n ice...thank God, but one went through my roof and almost went through my youngest son room. This video will help me repair that hole. I've also got another spot right over my shower. It did go through but luckily it's over the shower.
Oh wow, that's crazy. I was walking through my local Home Depot a few days ago and I seen these in stock, which I'm glad to see.
just the right time to know how to fix my roof from fallen tree, Thank you so much!
Glad to help! Hope it goes well.
I'll be doing this with two holes in are roof from previous owners not telling us the truth thanks man this saved me alot of money
That stinks they didn't tell you. Good luck with your project, these roof plugs are a nice item to make the repair.
Great video. I used this to repair a shed roof that had a hole from a large branch. This beat cutting plywood and was easy to install! Thanks.
Glad to hear, thanks for sharing.
Great vid! We have an identical hole that happened in a recent windstorm. You just saved us a bundle! thanks!
I love these patches. They saved my new roof after storm sent a branch through it. Over a year& holding up very well. Such an easy fix. Best invention!!!! Thanks so much for introducing me to these patches by posting this video!!!
Great to hear!
Quick, easy to understand, and now I have a list of items to patch the small hole in my garage roof.
Good luck with it. The fall season here in Michigan is my favorite for roofing.
Great video! Your instructional video was a great help. It not only help give me confidence to attempt this repair but it also gave me an idea of what to expect each step of the way. Thank you for your time and for sharing your expertise! Great job!
Thanks, Janet. Good luck on the repair!!
Good Job, I give you grade 'A' for to the point repair and not a lot of opinion; just pure facts, items to use and how to use them is what I was looking for, thank you.
Thanks, it's good to hear that.
Guy is good love how step by step details he demonstrated
Excellent video with clear instructions. I will be doing this today on the roof of a house that I've been renting for 2 years.
I've been asking the landlord to repair a leak in the roof since last October. I've done wet patches and I trapped the roof last year when I realized that the roof wasn't an urgent issue with the owner.
North Alabama gets a lot of rain during the fall and winter months, so I need to have something more secure.
My next step after this is to repair the water damaged ceiling.
Thank you, glad to hear it! I would think the landlord would be most concerned with a leaking roof, since it can do the most damage. Hope it goes well for you!
@@MarkThomasBuilder thank you very much. It was a much bigger spot than expected, but the repair went well and now I am getting ready to move onto the ceiling.
Thank you so much for the thorough instructions! We successfully repaired our roof this morning!!!!
That makes me happy to hear! Cheers!
Thanks for putting this out. Had a tree fall earlier this year as I was out of town. Wife said ah we are good. Fall cleaning of gutters and roof. Found where a limb went right through the roof. About the same size as your hole. Guess Home Depot run for me.
It's a great design and has held up well for me!
I was cleaning my roof and gutters and noticed the exact same thing. My story is almost identical to yours bro. I'm at Home Depot now 👍
I'm going up on the roof this weekend and trying my hand. Thank you
Good luck, be safe! Best advice I ever heard was to never walk backwards on a roof, otherwise you might fall off.
That's pretty smart making the whole bigger
Haha, seems counter-intuitive doesn't it? Trust me, this works.
Great fix for my shed roof that had the same thing happen!! Thanks for sharing!
+Lisa Garcia Glad to help! Hope the repair goes well.
I'm giving this 2 thumbs up. And I'm going to try this out this weekend fixing a friend's roof. As a matter of fact. The hole on the roof is the same size as in your video. And the hole was caused by a falling tree.
Thanks for the thumbs up!! Good luck with the repair, be safe!
Thank you for your help I’m about to attempt the same repair tomorrow, God willing I will have the same result you had lol thank you again
You're welcome, good luck with it!
Thank you
Thank you Mark! Great name by the way... 🙂
I have a couple of holes in my shed roof from fallen tree branches and I was looking for an easier way to repair it instead of building framing and replacing pieces of osb.
Hey Mark, hope this helps give you a nice solution for roof repairs.
Wow, quick and easy tutorial, looks like I found my weekend plan
Good luck, hope it goes well.
Excellent video. I would love to see a whole series on roof maintenance.
beahaven Thanks. I plan on more roofing videos. Please subscribe and stay tuned.
This gives me the confidence I needed - Thanks!
Thanks, good luck with your roof project!
Awesome- you made this way easier than I thought! Thanks for sharing!
You are welcome!
Thanks, brother. This came in handy worked like a charm appreciate it.
Awesome, glad to hear it!
Great video! Only thing I would do for a extra step and this is just me cause I over kill everything I would use caulk on the flashing of the patch and then put the nails in so you know for sure it doesn’t leak
Good call! 😎 🙌
Thank you for this video! We had a tornado come thru here last week and my insurance isn't giving me enough to fix our roof and most roofers don't want to even do a patch/repair job. Maybe I can sleep now.. thanks so much!
You're welcome. Glad to help!
It's frustrating! (Insurance). A person pays for years, then has to fight for the payout. I put insurance companies on the same level as the mafia.
Thank you for sharing this vídeo boss. Good help. God bless! From Nevada

Thanks, I did not know about the Kwik Plug. I'm hoping my leak is small enough for one.
They're pretty cool for a fast roofing repair.

Thanks for the video. They are currently unavailable on Amazon., so I am heading to Home Depot to buy a few of these. I'll keep one for a spare.
I just seen them in my Home Depot store when I was shopping for something else.

Thanks for sharing ❤
Gonna save my elderly parents a fortune doing this. Thanks.

markthomasbuilder i ended up having to make my own patch cause the hole was massive. Still used the rest of the process and spent like 30-40$ maybe.
Thank you! Very helpful!
Thanks, I'm glad to help!
Great demonstration
Thanks, Quincy🙌
Can't wait to give this a shot. Have 2 smaller holes from a tree branch puncture thanks to a big storm.
Hoping the repair goes smoothly. This video helped me out a lot.
Good luck with the repair. Be safe!
@@MarkThomasBuilder will do!!
@@MarkThomasBuilder this type of repair how long does it last ?
Great video - very helpful 👍😊💕
Glad it was helpful!
@@MarkThomasBuilder
I have the exact problem .
I will get the things I need to do this repair I have shingles but nothing else- Home Depot here I come tomorrow morning 😊👍💕
I guess to use the Kwik patch you need to have the plywood sub-roof to set it into. Not all roofs have this. But thanks for the video. Very helpful.
If you had a tongue and groove roof underneath the shingles, this might work too if construction adhesive or screws are used to attach the metal to the wood.
@@MarkThomasBuilder There were just 8 in-wide boards the shingles were attached to, so I cut out the damagedpiece and inserted a new pievce between the rafters. it worked fine. I'll have to await winter rains to see if it leaks!
Very, Very helpful!! Thank you!!
Glad it was helpful! Good luck on your repair.
Great video. I referred to it during my repair. The Kwikplug is hard to find though
If you can wait 2 days, I put a Amazon link in my video description. I also found these at my local Menards.
Probaly hard to find because there really isnt a use case for them. Not a product a roofer would ever need.
Thanks for the tip!
You bet!
Nice work
Thank you! Cheers!
Excellent video but for someone new like me maybe show the steps where you put the shingles in and how you layer them
Thanks for the suggestion. It can be a little tricky figuring it out.
That's the hard part-weaving them in. I would put some tar around the hole before putting the plug in.
Same here🤭
Thanks for this video.
You bet!
Great video
Thanks!
Great video 🍻
Thank you!
I didn't see the hole in my garage roof until 3 months after a big wind storm. Now I have some wood damage inside attic from bee's. The garage has been in excellent shape the past 40 years while being under 2 trees. a branch finally penetrated it. small hole. no bigger than about 2 golf balls
It doesn't take much with a falling limb in a storm. Best of luck on your repair!
2 things your suppose to nail between the lower 2 caulk lines on the shingle s and your felt should of been cut about to be tucked under the felt or water will get under it and just leak
Mine haven't leaked since doing this. Thanks for the advice.
Thats a level 99 dad right there💯🗿🍷
shot a hole in my roof this am by accident, reaching for the phone, finger hit the shotgun trigger, boom, instant hole, and then I found you and boom, instant fix! thank you
Yikes! Glad to help.

Thank you helped me

Good luck with your roofing repair!
Can you make a quick trip to the Houston area soon? I need this exact repair. But I will no doubt screw the pooch when I attempt it myself. :/
I want to get into travel vlogging. It would be nice to escape the Michigan winter for a bit.
Thanks for the video - it looks like I can probably do this myself and save at least a few hundred bucks. Quick question about the felt underlayment. Is that enough, do you think you would be better off with rubberized or synthetic underlayment?
This is a garage, which has an open ceiling and I can see if it leaks from inside. So far it's going strong, no leaks. My own personal house was reroofed about 5 years ago and has a synthetic underlayment from Certainteed.
Ty very useful
Happy to help
Hi so I have several spots where the wood is rotted and leaking. So I would have to replace all of the wood then felt paper and new shingles correct?
Yes, if you have several spots, then the roof deck needs to be replaced, including the felt paper. The roofers normally replace a 4x8 section at a time. The last time my house was reroofed, they replaced 2 or 3 sections that were rotting.
I was wondering if it is totally necessary to cut the square of roof deck out, since the edges of the patch piece are nailed to the wood, could you just put the patch thing right over the hole, with out cutting any of the wood?
Thanks for the question, you need the entire square hole cut in the roof deck so the metal part of the patch will sit inside the hole. That makes the entire patch sit flush with the existing roof deck. Hope that makes sense...
Wouldn't the metal underside cause a lot of frost to accumulate in winter causing condensation to drip down and rot the wood decking below it?
I haven't hear that before. I wouldn't think it would be an issue, but would like to hear from someone else who knows for sure. I recall seeing a similar product made of durable plastic years ago. I'm not sure if they're still around.
What do you suggest for a hole in the roof punched by a hail ball, nut it landed on the valley from an addition to the garage?
Sorry, it's hard for me to say without seeing it. It may require custom patching with OSB.
I had a tree fall on our shed roof and have a few holes to repair. This would certainly be an easy way to do it. Where do you buy the EZ Kwik Patches at? Thank You!
I have an Amazon link in my video description. I've also seen them at Menards. Good luck with your repair!
Is the patch meant to make the roof walkable? I am curious because if the hole is that small, wouldn't it make sense to just to slot a part or an entire piece of new shingle in that space instead of trying to make a larger penetration and then try to seal it? Sorry if my question is stupid, need to move a vent and am running into this same situation.
That's actually a really good question. From my perspective, if you have any type of hole in the roof, especially a roof vent which is 8"x8", you need to patch the hole with OSB for a proper repair. This Kwik plug saves you the steps of having to add 2x4 support pieces behind the OSB patch piece. I
If my shed had a small hole, like the size of a golf ball, or two, I probably wouldn't worry about the proper patch since I don't walk on the roof. If it leaked, then I'd do the proper repair. Hope that helps.
@@MarkThomasBuilder absolutely :). Thanks! Roofing is for some odd reason beyond my capabilities. The leaflets on the shingles just confused me. I've just gonna and slotted a foot long piece in with the proper nails and tar since originally it was just a poorly placed 1.5" plumbing vent. I'll have my ceilings open for a week anyhow, I'll see how it fairs here before deciding if I should get a proper patch in.
Does home depot have a larger square more of a rectangle like that
They only come in 8" square and 12" square patches. Anything more than that should have some additional bracing.
Thanks for the vid. Is it really necessary to buy / place that new shingle strip over the felt underlayment, and under the old shingles? What if you left the new shingle strip out of the equation?
If the shingle isn't damaged, you could reuse it. I had holes in mine, so it required a new section of shingles.
@@MarkThomasBuilder Thanks!
Do you have an idea how to plug a hole on the roof, where a 10 “ turbine was installed?
They make a quick plug for a 12" x 12" hole.
Nice😊👍👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Great!!!
😀 👍
How would you plug an area the size of an O'Hagin vent? I want to abandon 6 of them on my roof.
I don't know if they make one that big. I seen 8" & 12" sizes so far. It might require 2xs and plywood.
What was the white looking piece on there before you replaced it with the EZ plug patch?
That was a piece of metal flashing that was installed as a temporary measure to prevent roof leaks from a tree limb that punctured a hole. I made a video showing that temporary roof patch repair.
How can you get a small piece of that roof underlayment
That's a good question. As far as I know, it's only sold in rolls. I just looked at FB marketplace and found someone giving away a free roll. There's another one for $10. I think I used 30# felt paper in this video.
👍🌹 THANK YOU
You're welcome! Hope the fix goes well.
You didn't show laying the shingles over the patch or which order you lay them.down.
Made the chance of a leak exponentially greater. There is also no reason not to put sealant under the unnecessary metal plug.
what brand of shingles did ya use? Good job on the repair, looks good
Thanks, They're Certainteed Landmark Architectual. I think they're 30 yr.
good brand, I really like Certain-teed and Owens Cornings shingles
I'm going to re-roof my house. I'm probably going with Certainteed.
Can I buy just a few shingles instead of the whole package? Or a piece of that paper instead of the whole roll?
That's a good question. I've seen some places sell open bundles of shingles. You might want to call around. The metal flashing is often sold in different lengths, so you'll probably find just enough.
Patch started with lower edge under the lower shingle. But then at the 3:52 mark it appears to be on top of the lower shingle and notched out or something on both sides. What happened there and what was done (and why) that we didn't see?
Good question. I think I cut that small section out so I could get nails into the outside edges of the roof patch. I probably didn't need to notch it like that, but I was trying to save as much of the existing tar paper. It ended up getting covered up anyway with the new piece of tar paper. The key to a good patch is making sure everything is lapped in the correct order so in case water ever gets behind the shingle, it won't go under the tar paper.
@@MarkThomasBuilder Thank you.
Are these appropriate for when doing a re roof and switching to a ridge vent?
I don't see any reason why you couldn't use these for that situation.
I was crawling around in the attic and saw them yesterday. I didn't even know they existed. I thought they would cut to the rafters and put in a piece of plywood.
Though I am more concerned of how they decided to reconnect the fart fan pipes, and not say anything about it to us. If I get around to it today I'll post up a short video of it
Hi sir. I saw a piece of shingle fell to the ground. Now I am worried my roof will leak. It look like part of a shingle fell off as we had a lot of rain. Somehow it fell on my lawn
I've had some 3-in-1 shingle have a tab that blew off before and it didn't leak. I would recommend getting it looked at asap and repaired.
Just wondering - why did you cut the large square hole in the roof when you just had a small hole. Seems you just made the hole bigger for no reason. ??
This is the smallest roof patch plug I could find. Sometimes the hole on the top of the roof looks small and inside the attic, the hole can be bigger.
Do you have a video on how to patch the roof on the curve?
No, sorry I don't. I made another video showing how to temporarily patch a roof with flashing. That would probably work until you get a permanent solution.
markthomasbuilder thanks, I’m glad you knew what I meant lol I’m not sure what to call it
pardon me what happen if the hole on the roof is bigger than on the video? would i had to get 2 of them or does this patch comes in larger size at Home Depo? Please i need to know?
This is the largest size they make. Unfortunately you can't put them together for larger holes. It sounds like you'll have to add some 2x lumber underneath the hole and add some roof decking.
@@MarkThomasBuilder alright i make a note to this.thanks..
Does the quick plug come in different sizes?
There's another company that offers them in 2 sizes. I believe the metal ones at Menards are only available in one size.
