    This video is a complete overview of the Kwik Plug Roof Patch. This is my follow-up video to: Tree Fell On Roof- How To Make A Temporary Leakproof Repair. I will put a link down below and at the end of the video.
    Here's a product description from the manufacturer:
    "The Gibraltar Building Products Kwik Plug Roof Patch makes it easy to cover pre-existing holes, 8 in. x 8 in., in your home's roof, such as vents, or holes caused by storm or animal damage. This patch installs easily with nails and resists cracking and weakening in all temperature extremes. The Kwik Plug is made from durable galvanized steel and OSB."
    -12 in. x 12 in. Patch eliminates the need for cutting plywood
    -Resists cracking in extreme cold and weakening in heat
    -Intended for holes no larger than 8 in. x 8 in.
    -Easily installs with just 8 nails
    My overall opinion is that the Kwik Patch works very well and is much faster than trying to frame out the hole and fit in a piece of OSB. This method is very handy because all the work is done on top of the roof and not inside the attic or garage.
    If you find this video interesting, please help support my channel by giving it a "Thumbs Up". Thanks and have a great day!

    Got a random hole in my roof above the garage today. I patched it using flashing the way you showed in your other video and am ordering this product to do the permanent fix. As a new homeowner who is learning how to DIY, your videos are tremendously helpful and saved me a lot of stress. And the $800 someone wanted, which then was bumped down to $675 when I laughed at them at the $800 price. I laughed at $675 also.

      @@piscesdreams1023 well I wouldn't say they are taking advantage. I think roofing is a skill. And it's a dangerous job. Yea sure you can charge them 150 prob for the job and you can also fall of someone's roof. It's our job as consumers to price around. If someone will pay 800 that's what I'll charge too lol.

    I've got an old house, it's probably 100 yrs old that was moved & renovated. Just recently we had a major ice storm that brought down some pretty big limbs. And we live in Mississippi not well known for snow n ice...thank God, but one went through my roof and almost went through my youngest son room. This video will help me repair that hole. I've also got another spot right over my shower. It did go through but luckily it's over the shower.

    Excellent video with clear instructions. I will be doing this today on the roof of a house that I've been renting for 2 years.
    I've been asking the landlord to repair a leak in the roof since last October. I've done wet patches and I trapped the roof last year when I realized that the roof wasn't an urgent issue with the owner.
    North Alabama gets a lot of rain during the fall and winter months, so I need to have something more secure.
    My next step after this is to repair the water damaged ceiling.

    • @MarkThomasBuilder
      @MarkThomasBuilder  Рік тому +1

      Yes, if you have several spots, then the roof deck needs to be replaced, including the felt paper. The roofers normally replace a 4x8 section at a time. The last time my house was reroofed, they replaced 2 or 3 sections that were rotting.

  • @lindasjrtbunch
    @lindasjrtbunch 7 років тому +1

    I was wondering if it is totally necessary to cut the square of roof deck out, since the edges of the patch piece are nailed to the wood, could you just put the patch thing right over the hole, with out cutting any of the wood?

    • @MarkThomasBuilder
      @MarkThomasBuilder  7 років тому +2

      Thanks for the question, you need the entire square hole cut in the roof deck so the metal part of the patch will sit inside the hole. That makes the entire patch sit flush with the existing roof deck. Hope that makes sense...

    Wouldn't the metal underside cause a lot of frost to accumulate in winter causing condensation to drip down and rot the wood decking below it?

    • @MarkThomasBuilder
      @MarkThomasBuilder  5 років тому

      I haven't hear that before. I wouldn't think it would be an issue, but would like to hear from someone else who knows for sure. I recall seeing a similar product made of durable plastic years ago. I'm not sure if they're still around.

    Is the patch meant to make the roof walkable? I am curious because if the hole is that small, wouldn't it make sense to just to slot a part or an entire piece of new shingle in that space instead of trying to make a larger penetration and then try to seal it? Sorry if my question is stupid, need to move a vent and am running into this same situation.

    • @MarkThomasBuilder
      @MarkThomasBuilder  3 роки тому +1

      That's actually a really good question. From my perspective, if you have any type of hole in the roof, especially a roof vent which is 8"x8", you need to patch the hole with OSB for a proper repair. This Kwik plug saves you the steps of having to add 2x4 support pieces behind the OSB patch piece. I
      If my shed had a small hole, like the size of a golf ball, or two, I probably wouldn't worry about the proper patch since I don't walk on the roof. If it leaked, then I'd do the proper repair. Hope that helps.

      @@MarkThomasBuilder absolutely :). Thanks! Roofing is for some odd reason beyond my capabilities. The leaflets on the shingles just confused me. I've just gonna and slotted a foot long piece in with the proper nails and tar since originally it was just a poorly placed 1.5" plumbing vent. I'll have my ceilings open for a week anyhow, I'll see how it fairs here before deciding if I should get a proper patch in.

    Patch started with lower edge under the lower shingle. But then at the 3:52 mark it appears to be on top of the lower shingle and notched out or something on both sides. What happened there and what was done (and why) that we didn't see?

    • @MarkThomasBuilder
      @MarkThomasBuilder  Рік тому

      Good question. I think I cut that small section out so I could get nails into the outside edges of the roof patch. I probably didn't need to notch it like that, but I was trying to save as much of the existing tar paper. It ended up getting covered up anyway with the new piece of tar paper. The key to a good patch is making sure everything is lapped in the correct order so in case water ever gets behind the shingle, it won't go under the tar paper.
