DIY: Temporary fix for hole on the roof

- All the tools & products I used for the repair I bought at Home Depot. I cut out the existing shingles in the area around the hole. I then covered the hole with three layers of sheet metal. I glued on the sheet metal with a product called Wet-R-Dri roof cement & it stops roof leaks. I then put down the new shingles over the sheet metal covering the entire section that I cut out. I used the roof cement to glue down the shingles then hammered it down with roofing nails. Sorry I didn't show how I nailed down the shingles, I forgot to put that part on video. I did the repair on March 28, 2015 and it is still holding up strong. It has rained since, even had a storm and there are no leaks. The estimate I got from a licensed roofer was over $2000, that is expensive for me, so I decided to repair it myself. I spent a total of $100 this includes the tools I used, the roof cement, sheet metal, a big package of shingles, a bag of chips and a diet coke. :) Thanks for watching.

I am a Carpenter and LEA in the Oregon, I don’t do a lot of roof work, but Im no stranger to it either. I am impressed with how brave you are to take this on yourself! Is it perfect? No. But it will definitely do the job until the next tear out!

You did a beautiful job. No need to replace the whole roof, it looks like it's in great shape. Only thing I'd advise doing differently is to get the patch shingles under the surrounding shingles, so they're overlapped. This way water cannot get in. You did a great job though!
I agree even for any temporary fix. You needed to over lap the shingles to reduce any chance of rain getting in. If that happens you risk black mold and more problems that will become expensive repairs. But in all I have to give it to you. Job well done.

I too was concerned abt the 'flow' with no overlapping, I will weave mine in. I hope to cut out & patch with wood first tho (more long term temporary,lol) I may hv my butt handed to me and do the flash instead....ahhhh great job hun! Good video. I did a similar repair and it lasted 10 years. Now, It has worn out and tore out the old patch to re-do again. You saved BIG $$ doing it yourself. That sheet metal sounds like a good idea. Thanks.

I hate it when I walk into a home improvement store or have someone come to my home, and think that because I'm woman, they can talk down to me or give me a ridiculous estimate. I may be a woman but I am not an idiot. I applaud you for telling that company to take a hike and tackling this yourself. That's why I refuse to live in a gated community with homeowners associations, pay 150k to 500k to have someone tell me what I can and can't do and what day I have to cut my grass, I've never understood it maybe that's just the country boy in me. I'm gonna watch your video very closely to see every step that you're doing. But besides that I basically do everything to my home and I'm still learning. Exactly. A person takes the initiative to do a repair themselves AND puts themself out in a limb by posting to HELP OTHERS and folks just lay into her with nasty critiques. Constructive criticism is one thing but the internet has turned many of us into critical a-holes. There were a few problems with the way this was done but some commenters could have been nicer with their suggestions.

You're awesome ma'am. You did a better job to protect your home from further damage by rain water and squirrels. You also have a wonderful son who helped his hard working mother to finish a tough project that some men wouldn't be able to even try to get it done. Ive roofed for 42 yrs and specialize in roof repairs, what you had was a simple $250.00 repair, good for you for trying to tackle it yourself, that repair will be fine as long as there is no rain, snow or wind, good luck,

You did a GREAT job for someone who never worked on a shingle roof before. I commend you for looking on UA-cam for some idea's before you got started as well as what tools you needed to get started. I hope this kept the water out for you !
She’s absolutely adorable for doing the job herself - well done! I wonder if your association gave you an issue over that or not? You probably don’t need another roof you just need shingles that match the ones you have better and under lap them under the other ones. I love that you can see her well manicured nails and she is still doing this job. She is adorable!

I am impressed! If I had a ladder I'd patch mine. Going to pick up some sheet metal and tell my handyman to use it. Squirrels are going after my roof. My neighbor had their roof replaced, and now the squirrels are going after mine. Ugh.

Also, I did watch videos on how to remove & replace & there wasn't that many detailed videos, so I just did the best with what I found through my research.
+Crafting With Charm But if youd'a just googled it you could'a done it right and permanently easier than what you did. I mean seeing what you did do, I can see that you coulda easily done the correct way w/ just a little instruction. "How to's" for roof repair are all over UA-cam. Like the one guy said, "It's gonna leak like crazy without the overlap at the edges. For $2000, (that sounds way high you can find a much cheaper price) But given your ability w/ the tools, all you need is a little instruction. If I were you, I would UA-cam the instructions, and redo it regardless of the price as adept as you are w/ the tools. You got the will. The way is easy. For a small job like this anyway.
+partner348 absolutely right. shingles should be staggered on an of set divide kind of like bricks. had you taken out the pieces of shingle you didnt have to go to all the extra work of cutting those temp shingles to fit your hole. all you had to do was pull the cut and torn up shingles and replace them with whole ones. In this case you actually did more work than if you had replaced whole shingles and not cut them.

Crafting With Charm the way you approached it was good, but how you cut up the existing shingles was not good. You can still fix this yourself. But, you need to not cut any shingles. You start two row above the row 3-tab shingle you need to remove and you keep taking out shingles, no cutting them! Until you reveal your needed work space. Then you fix your problem, refelt with tar paper, and put the same shingles right back in. Originally, you could had done this job easily only replacing the actual damaged shingles with no cutting up new shingle shenanigans!! Good job I suppose. But I would like to see you go back up there and do what I've mentioned. Your 3-tab shingles will go right back on. You just lift the shingle tab below the shiny you're installing to drive your nails 1" above the tab cutout, or the tar line if their not 3-tab type shingle. $2,000, good grief, I'm in the wrong business 😆

Good job, girl. If it were not that I'm afraid of heights, I would do my roof myself. I had a few holes and I was charged $500 for the patch repair with a 1 year warranty.
Good video. People are criticizing but thats crazy. Of course it wasnt going to be some contracting repair video. I loved the dishwashing gloves and you said it was temporary so that shuts up any negativity. Its not leaking tonight ( 4 years worth) just would have to patch again sooner.

Geez! What caused a hole like that? A meteorite. But, way to go. I am learning how to repair my leaking roof. That is what brought me to your video. I have learned how to fix my truck, fix plumbing, and all sorts of things watching UA-cam. I cannot afford these mechanics or contractors, so I am learning to do it myself too. I might even try your method of gluing sheet metal? My hole was smaller (about 2") and this might be an easier fix rather than cutting out a section of board. This would probably be a better option for me since my roof is 25 to 30 years old and the whole thing need to be replaced this summer. The sheet metal would be a better option because all the wood needs replaced anyway. So, why waste time and money replacing it now? Thanks for that idea!

Personally I think that was great. I have the exact same hole in my roof, and roofing estimates were also way to high. I'm a guy and was hesitant about trying to repair it myself but you inspired me. What's the worst that can happen ? It's already leaking ...LOL

who ever quoted you 2000 dollars for that little hole is a real crook. Good on you for doing this yourself. Looks like your shingles are in still good condition. I'd just hold off on that roof replacement for awhile more

Wow, A for effort. Without having any training, you did amazing. Don't expect me to put a video on UA-cam showing how my lasagna turns out. Lol. I'm not a cook. Unfortunately, the experts are correct on your repair. It will leak.The reason you got such a high estimate is because roofing companies need to keep a crew busy. They typically will only bid a roof replacement. As far as getting 3 bids on this repair. That is a waste of everyone's time. Your repair is a service call repair. If I show up, I'm doing the repair. I ask enough questions so as not to waste my time on such a small repair. I've preformed harder repairs for $180. I say "hard". I mean hard for your average layman. Not hard for your roofing contractor. Making lasagna is hard for me.I own High Quality Home Maintenance in Cedar Rapids Iowa and perform roof repairs regularly. There is a chance that the tar paper will keep the water out for a while, the caulking will help too. If I had to guess (and I don't) your roof will begin to show signs of leaking within 5 years. The reasons are as follows; 1. The sides/ends of the shingles line up from the bottom to the top of the repair. This means that the shingles are not staggered from 1 row to the next which would provide a water tight repair. 2. If the shingles were overlapped properly, then you would need to have a starter course shingle. 3. You cut the top 5 inches off of at least 2 shingles. Never cut the top of a shingle unless you are near the peak of the roof or are terminating at a wall. 4. I'm guessing that the shingle at the top of the repair also has the top cut off. This means that it is only tucked under the existing shingle until you hit the nails holding that shingle down. This will probably be the area that will allow the most water under the shingles. However, if you keep applying tar to the seams of your repair. The leaking can be greatly minimized until you get a new roof. Also put tar at least 8 inches above the repair area. Trust me on this, just put tar over the shingles 8 inches above the repair. That's the best you can do until the roof gets replaced.
Listen to that straight edge blade - this roof is brittle, probably 20 years old. Given the weather seems to be cool, these shingles will break free from the cement line, but due to the age, the shingles will also break in field if they are flexed even a little.
I would have quoted $ 350 if the decking was replaced but closer to $100 for a simple piece of flat .26 gauge that was fit in close to 6" up, 6" to the sides & a few inches below the hole (tucked under the shingles) & then patch in shingles like she did.
Like you, I can appreciate the effort but the execution is not great @ all.
That said, this roof is limited in the life span & I think this patch will probably leak faster than your suggested 5 years.
BTW, given that location & it's so far away from the tree, was this damage done from a basketball hoop over the garage door?
A for effort and great video but, for anyone watching this, please don't cut vertically through your shingles. Pull out the shingles that are damaged and weave new ones in.

Looks good. If you add some roofing tar around all the seems it wont look as nice but it will stop leak from rotting more wood underneith. Good luck

I hate HOA'S. It seems like a scam to me. We had a house in Houston with an HOA. We always asked for a breakdown of the charges of the HOA, but never got one...I wonder why...🤔You did a great job! 👍

instead of cutting the bottom part off you actually start at the bottom lay a shingle then over lap them on shinning part that way that tar strip will seal um then you stack them from the bottom up over lapping them , i wish i lived close by i come fix it for free for you ,, you did great for not knowing what your doing better than most i have seen, home repairs can be expensive , and 95 % home repair and car repair , are very simple , anyways to bad you not in Illinois , if ever have to do again you stagger shingles the old on and stack from bottom over lapping as you go up when get top you have to lif old shingle up slide new one under it

I realize your trying and i applaud your efforts, but watch a video on removing and replacing damaged shingles. Although that might work for a short time it will leak. The bad part is you will not notice it until it has caused a lot of damage. Great effort though, you rock for not doing that kind of work!!

+Crafting With Charm Nice job with the repair! That roof is in good shape, it should last a while yet. Like John Dunn said you should be able to remove the whole shingles just enough to expose where you cut out your patch, then cut the roof sheathing into a square shape to cover half of each of the nearest rafters, then patch in a piece of sheathing, and use zip tape to seal the seams. Then piece in whole shingles where the old ones originally were.

That quote for $ 2k was stupid high.
Maximum $ 200, especially being so close to the eave... parts included, if it is a metal patch over.
If the decking is removed / replaced, then closer to $ 350.

Although this was not the correct way to do the repair it may hold up if the adhesive does not have any breaks in the seams. Even if it does not, it is the garage roof so will not be catastrophic...Also ask your neighbor to trim the tree branches away from your roof...I admire your effort and stick-to-it-ness.
