Disney's 100th Anniversary Short Makes Wish Look Bad

- I am reviewing and reacting to Disney's 100th Anniversary short film, Once Upon a Studio which was released on Disney plus. I compare the movie to Disney animation's Wish which flopped at the box office. I think Disney can turn things around with more things like this.

The concepts for Wish were IMMENSELY better than the actual movie.
So much better!
@@Brittney_Reacts_ We literally could’ve had a villain couple (with a cat lol) and a hero couple 😭.
Usually how it goes 😅
We were fr ROBBEDDD!!😭 @@SweetOrangeGirl
@@Brittney_Reacts_And you accidentally called Flounder Scuttle Brittany Lol 😂 And that blue lizard is from Rescuers Down Under it’s Joanna
*Brittney: **_"THIS is what_** WISH **_should have been."_*
Dear Lady, you summed it all up in one sentence.
100th liker
They should’ve made this into a movie than what we got with Wish
Totally agree!
Imagine that.
Literally what I said. They should’ve definitely done that.
Can you talk about their woke agenda that destroyed Disney
Yeah and 190th liker
My favorite detail about this short was the very beginning- the old man was Burny Mattinson - the LONGEST working Disney animation studio employee. He worked there for almost SEVENTY YEARS. And it had him talking with the new generation of animators in the young woman with him. It was such a sweet moment and I'm so glad he was able to be in the short before he passed.
oh thank you so much for this explanation
Asha has the special honor in being in both Disney's worst and best 100th year celebration movie.
This short proves that Wish's lazy director was talking total BS blaming 2D animation for being too limited when you can indeed do almost everything with 2D if you just have enough knowledge and ambition to it like this short! Disney should have fired that director and those robotic-like amateur writers too.
Plus, don’t they have 2D animated shows?
Richard Williams already proved that.
Literally the entirety of the anime industry proves that the director was talking nonsense.
Unfortunately, Jennifer Lee is the head of animation at Disney.
Why are they so terrified about making a 2D movie anyway? They age better than 3D imo (unless the 3D is stylized in which case it last longer in not looking outdated)
I actually agree. This SHORT had more respect and care for their brand than Wish ever did. Granted, there were still HIDEOUS recreations of beloved characters (like Pacha) but there was real highlights in there too. Seeing Mr. Toad on the Magic Carpet MAKES A LOT of sense. He found yet another mania.
Also, girl, you need to watch the package films. You would have known quite a few characters on here from seeing them.
Poor thing remembered Mr. Toad, but mistook chars from his short for chars from other movies.
@@Zodia195 Yep. She thought Ratty was Basil.
This make me think: WHERE WAS BASIL?!
@@tultsi93 Didn't see him. I think I saw Ratigan though.
@@tultsi93 Lol, he was there, just towards the end during the song segment.
I do “WISH” that they could’ve made once upon a studio movie where all the characters interacted with each other, like imagine how fun that would be.
Worst part is, this could've helped get more people to see the movie. But Disney was like: "People haven't seen Encanto, right? And they still watch ABC and TV, right?
Let's put it on ABC for Encanto's premier!"
“Once Upon a Studio” should have been a full-length feature. It celebrates the Disney legacy, and would have gotten people into theaters. The other option should have been a full-length Mickey Mouse film.
I kept crying like a baby for 10 more minutes after the end. F**k, this little gem is way more precious, detailed, rendered than that trash they sold as 'a century in the making'. Here: heart, soul, feelings, a sense of PARTICIPATION. There: soulless, lazy, heartless marketing.
I think what people really like about this short is that it's simple and straightforward. The Mario movie is also like that too. Not everything needs to be complicated. Sometimes you need something simple and straightforward and that's what Once Upon A Studio and The Super Mario Bros. Movie nailed so well.
6:59 'The Rescuers Downunder' her name is Joanna. She was the villain's animal sidekick.
10:56 'Fun and Fancy Free.' That's the harp lady who gave life to an entire village. She got taken by a giant and then Mickey, Donald and Goofy had to go and get her back to save their village.
It's incredible how even the most obscure Disney characters are in this short.
Schafrilla's Productions was disappointed that Tamatoa wasn't there.
I lost it when they showed Joanna, because I loooooved the Rescuers Down Under as a kid but nobody knows that movie exists!
@@hannb_nana I do!
If anything, between this short and the concept art for WISH, it proves that Disney still has creative and innovative artists and writers, Disney higher ups just need to let these people have some creative freedom and take risks, instead of playing it safe constantly just for a quick buck.
I'm very upset and sad at the state of Disney right now, but I hope one day things will change for the better and that Disney will reclaim some of its magic that we all know it for. Maybe even get an ACTUAL 2D animated movie again? (though to be fair, that last part's just a gripe I have with animation movie studios in general nowadays). Maybe I'm being too optimistic, but Disney has had its hard times before, so maybe there's still hope for a future Disney renaissance?
They actually SHOWED WALT. I am STUNNED....
with his favorite song!
I love seeing WISH art because it's all either 'King Magnifico is hot' 'Asha Redesign/OG concept art' or 'Asha and Star Boy Should Have Been'
You know things have gone wrong when people prefer a Disney short than their feature film.
Cobra Bubbles: And things HAVE INDEED gone wrong....
😂😂😂😂😂 I see what you did there 😂😂😂
Wish naga bootifah!
What if Wish wasn’t centred around a new character, but around Mickey and the beginnings of all the stories that Disney made in the last 100 years?
I am so deeply angry at Disney for all they’ve done to ruin their brand, I can’t really see this clearly.
The short made me tear up and reading the comments under it made me cry. They got some really obscure characters in there that are easy to miss like the hats from Johnny Fedora and Alice Blue Bonnet, Susie the Little Blue Coupe, Casey at the Bat, John Henry, and Artful Dodger from Oliver and Company. I would have liked to see Max and Pete , and I also wish the fairies had ended their fight with the hat being both pink and blue, but otherwise it was basically perfect. Felt like a bit of a farewell though.
They even got The Reluctant Dragon in there (so funny) and the lizard you were wondering about is from The Rescuers Down Under
Yes, Joanna from Rescuers Down Under! And the golden haired harp lady she wondering about was from Mickey and the Beanstalk!
I was so overwhelmed by emotion the first time that I had to see it again to focus and identify each character and each music. Now I watch it about every other day.
Ursula saying "oh nonononononoo" 😂 voice clip from the movie.
R.I.P. Pat Carol
I feel like this short should have played before the movie WISH in theaters.
Maybe it would have taken those good feelings into the movie and made the experience better, but yea WISH still left alot to be desired.
The rescuers down under!!!! Omg one of my faves as a kid
Felt so warm watching this the 1st time! It was like I was a kid again almost, shame that we don't get that feeling much these days. It's not perfect mind you but it's got that one special ingredient that every great Disney movie needs, heart 💜 with a dash of faith, trust, and pixie dust.
Again shows us how great 2D animation would be in a Disney movie today.
When he said “if these walls could talk” my first thought was, “they’d be calling the police”😅
To be honest, my ideal 100th anniversary movie would've been a new Fantasia.
I really enjoyed this, it made me cry. So many Disney movies were my childhood. I’m 27 now. And I’ll never forget my childhood watching all the classic Disney movies. I grew up with so many of these Disney characters. My top favourites are The Lion King and The fox and the hound, so seeing those characters in this too was emotional. So much talent was put into all the classic Disney movies, shows and characters ❤
This short is amazing yeah wish had so much potential I don’t know what happened but this short is predicted to win best animated short film
"Scuttle is going to ruin it as akwafina did in live action"
It's obvious Brittney loves scuttlebutt that songs deserves an Oscar 😂😂😂
Seeing the wholesomeness of this makes me wish it was one of two things instead of wish.
Either A a Roger rabbit hosted special. Have it in toon town Roger wanting to have a big reunion, and brint together all these different characters. I absolutely love the mixed animation looks and styles.
Or B just straight up have it be a Mickey mouse movie. That you can say this all started with the plane crazy Mickey mouse short. So you're bringing it full circle celebrating with Mickey. As he's trying to put on a great show for the people. Wanting to instill this thing of magic like they always have. And have it kinda be like the house of mouse or the Muppets. That it's just a bit chaotic balancing all these different people. You could have fun things like Mickey walking through the parks the studios etc. Showing all that was possible due to one guys idea.
Oh yeah, a House of Mouse movie would have been perfect for the 100th anniversary!!
I can't believe they even included the black cauldron characters
Not only that, but Eilonwy (who is usually the princess Disney pretend doesn't exist 😢 ) is right there up front in shot with Snow White (the first princess) and Asha (the latest). As a Welsh kid, Eilonwy was my favourite princess and this was the moment I couldn't help crying buckets when I first watched this.
Perhaps because of my autism, and the fact I found it hard to make friends when I was little so toys and tv characters became my "friends", even in my 40s now I've had a continued sadness for Eilonwy and worried her never being included in Princess media would mean she felt left out or unloved, so this moment was very important validation for me and other fans who grew up with the film. I think was almost certainly done on purpose to say "we rememeber her and acknowledge she is a real Disney princess". 😊
In the group shot at the end, there's many Black Cauldron characters in the far left back, including Gurgi, Horned King and Creeper, Fflewder, as well as Taran & Hen Wen. 😁
me neither!! i always felt that disney tried to pretend black cauldron didn’t exist lol, pleasant surprise
I love the short! It gave me memories from my childhood. I “wish” Wish would’ve been a good movie. I still “WISH” they keep the original scrapped version!
Edit: Now thinking about it! We should’ve gotten a movie about this short for the 100th anniversary! What if there was a villain in some story and Micky Mouse and the gang needed to bring everyone together to fight this evil villain! The villain would be- B*b Iger🤣
🤣🤣
There’s original concept ideas that feature the star being a magical human boy with shapeshifting powers and being a love interest for Asha and King Magnifico and Amaya could’ve been a perfect villain couple maybe a sequel a wish could use those scrapped ideas and make it be magical like you said
I loved this so much! So many memories! I miss 2D animation in movies! I wish they show this as a short in theaters like for Wish.
Again: "The Sorcer's Apprentice" "Enchanted," or "The Fisherman and His Wife" were the perfect templates for this film. They really expected the references to do all the heavy-lifting.
There's a funny gag during the end credits where Lucifer (the cat from Cinderella) is eyeing Ratigan (from The Great Mouse Detective).
several funny gags!
6:55 The blue lizard is from the movie "The Rescuers Down Under". It's a sequel to "The Rescuers". The villian is a poacher and the lizard is his pet/minion.
10:54 The golden girl, I had to look her up, she's from the film "fun and fancy free." I'm a disney geek too but I never seen that movie.
People were saying this may have been a good chance to make a Kingdom Hearts movie. especially since Wish takes place before most other Disney movies at the center of a multiverse. heck, one guy was saying that if they did do a KH movie, one idea is that the art style of the movie would change depending on every world the characters enter to match that world's style. old school animation, modern 3D, and all other movies Disney did.
But then again, Disney would have to do alot of talking with SquareEnix. "It would also have to fit in the continuity" actually, not really. there was going to be a KH TV show that was going to have even more story than the original game did, such as Riku joining Sora in Aladdin's world. Riku was told about Genie and whoever holds his lamp can have 3 wishes. if he had that kind of power, he could save Kairi and restore his home world too. he goes to the Cave of Wonders trying to get the lamp before Aladdin arrives, but something went wrong when he got his hands on it.
A KH movie would have been a great way to introduce new people to the series and also would have been great to revisit classic Disney movies with the characters hopping from world to world and having fun. such as the idea of Riku stealing Genie's lamp to have his own wishes granted. but, that's just not what happened.
The blond harp girl is from Fun & Fancy Free.
Yeah, I love that they have some more obscure Disney characters in this short. Did you spot Gergi from The Black Cauldron?
looking so much like kate capshow in the musical opening of "indiana jones and temple of doom". And the story is very similar. (happiness returns when the harp is returned) Lucasfilm tributes to disney are always very subtle. bobby driscoll as jim hawkins trying to work like sailors, mace towani trying to work like ewoks....character thrown in water by an animal in "indiana jones and temple of doom" (again) and "swiss family robinson" and "sleeping beauty".. (same gestures...kevin corcoran on baby elepahnt, laughing.....and many more, I stop here because it's not what this discussion is about and I apologize for it
WALK not work, ooops sorry
When I first watched the short, IT ALMOST BROUGHT ME TO TEARS IT WAS SO WHOLESOME
I don't know if it is because I am just very tired and therefore more emotional, but I am actually crying in nostalgic longing for the old magic. Such cultural treasures.
The fish is Flounder, Scuttle was the seagull.
The blue lizard is named Joanna from the Rescuers Down Under.
I have rode on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride and aware of the hell section.
"Wish" deserves better though.
Just went to Disneyland yesterday. This 100th anniversary Disney short is very cute
✨☺️💙✨
So are you saying that this short was "Wish fulfillment"?
That “blue dragon” is Joanna from the rescuers down under. The Aussie sequel of the rescuers. I would die for it
The short made me and my sister cry happy and nostalgia tears
Joanna from The Rescuers Down Under 6:56
Harp from Fun and Fancy Free or Mickey in the beanstalk 10:59
Please don’t… his name is Flounder, not Scuttle.
I was also geeking out watching the special. Despite what it's become Disney movies were a big part of my childhood entertainment. I would be lying if I said I didn't get a tad emotional.
No Fox and The Hound reference? 😭😭😭
Todd and Copper were seen walking in the corridors.
Fox and the hound is in this, it shows Todd and Copper. The fox and the hound and the lion king are my favourites so I loved seeing Todd, Copper, Timone, Pumbaa, Scar, Simba and Nala ❤
waiting for ur velma season 2 reaction 😩
i'm still iffy on wish as a movie but now i'm imagining what this would be like at feature length
I love this short!!!
Glad you liked it!
I loved that short! It showed before Wish in my theatre I was so excited nudging my boyfriend and pointing out each character on the theatre and legit teared up at the end. Sadly we were let down by Wish, but the next day we went to see Godzilla -1.0 which made it better.
I didn't see Max (A Goofy Movie), Doug (Doug's 1st Movie), TJ (Recess: School's Out) and their friend groups. How dare you, Disney?
Those are produced by Disney Television Animation
Not Walt Disney Animation Studios
@@Sean-132 Those movies were run at cinemas. Doug's 1st Movie was originally going to be a straight-to-VHR movie, but Disney decided to go further with that project. And its box office was smaller than A Goofy Movie and Recess: School's Out.
@@tultsi93
Still not produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios
The blonde harp is from Mickey and the Beanstalk.
Say what you will about modern Disney, the juggernaut it is. Judge and say what you will about Walt Disney himself. But I absolutely love the story of Disney. That all the success Disney has starts from failure. All starting from Walt feeling so down he lost his first ever big success with Oswald the lucky rabbit. That just a doddle he did on a napkin with his wife, became an American icon. That's a beautiful notion to me. One man's vision and dream became life. And despite everything over the years, that's a beautiful story to me.
nothing to do with anything, but harry potter was first written on napkins. Never give up and listen to the owl's advice in disney's "so dear to my heart" : it's what you do with what you got, even if what you got is not a lot
The blue lizard (dragon you called him) is that villain side kick from The Rescuers 2
Joanna
@@kevinlee7678 I knew it was a girl but I couldn’t remember her name! Thank you!
What’s an even bigger mistake was Once Upon A Studio was meant to be paired with Wish in American theaters, but was nixed by execs before Wish even released claiming it’ll be a month late from the actual founding of the studio which was October 1923. THAT I think would’ve been the better sell to give Wish a boost.
Yet, in some countries overseas like France, Japan, and United Kingdom. This short film did release alongside Wish in their theaters as it is. America made a HUGE mistake in my opinion.
The Rescuers Downunder. The one you missed.
I agree the same goes for oliver and company
Velma Season 2 trailer dropped… waiting not so patiently for your reaction
The Harp girl from Mickey and The Beanstalk
Wish has done so bad that the Disney plus wimpy kid Christmas movie has better reviews then wish the 100 year anniversary film for one of the biggest companies in the world
The people doing this short actually really liked. Disney animation and were determined to do it right. Wish feels like it was just another corporate product.
Hey. Did you notice that Antonio was holding the cricket from mulan and Pascal?
YES, sweet reminder that the brave little guy will protect all animals, no exceptions
6:57 that blue dragon is JoAnna from The Rescuers Down Under
wondering if you’ll be reacting to season 2 of velma! miss you videos but understand if you have other priorities
Ok now imagine if I’m Wish all of the characters were in the film and Asha had to help them get back to where their from and they grant her a big wish at the end.
All of the villains together would’ve been iconic.
There is one thing I really wish though, when Mickey says thanks to Walt's picture I wish he had said thanks Dad
This is why I’m glad that the first three Mickey Mouse cartoons are now Public Domain😒👎
Mickey should've finally had his own 1 hour and 30 minute theatrical release regarding wishes. That would've made more sense.
She in one of the Mickey cartoons puts the giant to sleep by playing the golden harp. She also shows up in Fantasia
No matter how many times I've seen Once Upon a Studio, I will always love it. The short is the true 100th anniversary for Disney in a year where everything was just ho-hum.
The "blue dragon" is a Komodo Dragon from The Rescuers films.
There also was Madame Medusa from the original Rescuers.
Technically, the concepts for WISH were better than the movie. The Star was a Star Lord/Prince and Kingdom Heartless hasn't given a prince to walk the aisle since 2010. Also, the villains have to be men because women are incapable of hurting each other, lol.
the star looks like it's from a TV manga, so they loved it in my country where every child 3years old and older is mocked in school if he dares to like something else than pokemon
If you’re wondering who was looking at Olaf before flying off that was the lost boy version of Robin Williams from a special short made at WDW called “Back to Neverland”
I look at the end of 'Once Upon a Studio' and I think "Yeah, you'd better hold Asha's hands, girls - she needs all the support she can get after those reviews."
"I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way" she's beautiful, I bought the dolls before seeing the film. It had so much potential, where did it go so wrong and why?
Great commentary! I appreciate how you pause to talk.
If it means that much, it's up to us to introduce Mr. Iger to legendary 90's country singer Kevin Sharp and his song Make a Wish, something shall be done for Wish. Just like how they turn Ugly Sonic in the first Sonic movie with those human teeth to Proper Sonic. And perhaps get Owen Suskind to do the writing. But none the less, it's a wonderful short.
I still remember how scary it was as a child when the devil shows up in fantasia. Looking back it was an extreme rush to watch as a child. The whole scene is intense. Including the very end when he goes away. Looking back idk if it's good for children like 4 and 5 to watch that. But here i am lol. All turned out good lol
Chernabog!
Their water colour experiment failed. *The great concept art wasn't used,* scrapped Idea's like their first Villain couple, & Pop songs instead of Musical Theater: *Disney's Bread & Butter* 🧈 yeah Disney really made a mistep with *_Wish_*
Didn’t see _Wish,_ have no plan (or ‘wish’?), to see it . . . But stylistically I liked the concept of using 3D animation to (re)create a style somewhere between 2D and 3D that marries the best of both worlds. Just too that they couldn’t use this style to, y’know, make a good movie 🤷♂️
I WISH this was our 100 years celebration on THEATERS instead of have to drag watching that awful Wish movie......this short is exactly what anyone wanted to see, it have the heart, the magic, the music, WALT cameo, Burny Mattinson cameo at the beginning was so wholesome and all the perfect blending of live action, 2D hand draw animation with CG animation so smoothly done, Walt Disney himself would have been proud of this, this was deserved of the 100 years celebration logo, not Wish, wonderful short in every single way.
Good reaction as always that is how me and my family felt when we saw the short we just kept saying awe or look at this and we will pause it. I also like how you pointed out the white rabbit which was so funny I spit out my water laughing, but actually albino bunnies or albino pretty much any critter has eyes like that, too from my experience from what I seen.
Just watching this with you gave me a sense of little wonder and reminds me of the wonderful memories I have with disney when I was a kid also reminded me to never stop using my imagination ❤ 😊
Sorry, these three characters are not from Basil the great mouse detective film they’re from the wind in the willows in case you didn’t know.

There was the Princess, right among the first characters to come out the picture, in her nice white dress!

First off I’m so sorry I haven’t been able to join lives in a while :(! But yeah, I totally agree, this short completely made me forget about how bad 2023 was for Disney and all the flops they brought out that year. The animation styles in this movie should’ve been in a Disney 100 movie, in fact if they fleshed out the story in that short more out. It could have literally been THE (Disney) movie of the year.
I've watch the 100 short film and I enjoyed it. However all their upcoming disney movies don't make me so exsited.
