I made a some cozy bowls a few years ago using your video. I searched for YOUR tutorial to make some more again. I love your voice, your instructions, and the process. I was afraid the video had been removed or that I was not going to be able to find you. Thank you! You are the best!!!
Certainly the best tutorial and method I have seen. I think measuring, marking out and cutting darts makes for precision sewing. Loved it. Thanks for sharing.
So glad I found your tutorial again! IT is still the best- easy to follow and love your instructions especially how you save alot of my time and lots of NEEDLES🥰
I took the time to watch several bowl cozy tutorials. Genie's tutorial was by far the shortest, clearest to follow, with no extra "doo-dads" to purchase, tutorial etc. Thanks, Genie!
I have looked at most of the cozy video. Making a template and cutting the batting an inch shorter kept me from pulling my hair out. Thank you for making this video.
After watching numerous videos on making these cozies, I was able to watch yours all the way through. First [and for me, most important] your voice is pleasant and easy to listen to. Next, you didn't talk and talk just to fill the air, your instructions were to the point and just enough. I'll try what Marlene mentions below for the darts as well. Thank you so much for the best instructions on cozies!!! I've subscribed :)
I really enjoy your conversational tutorial. I looked at least half a dozen versions of the bowl cozy videos but when it came time to make one myself I had your video on pause while I worked on my project. I made two now thanks to you! You made it sound easy enough for a beginner! Thanks!
Of all tutorials I've seen on the bowl cozy this one was clear. gave good measurements, and a tip to make your own pattern for doing multiples. I plan to make several for Christmas presents for my family and for some elderly that reheats their meals using the microwave. Thank you and I look forward to seeing more of your tutorial videos. :)
I work in a hobby store cutting fabric. I had a customer purchase a bunch of fabric to make these bowls, and she told me about this video! Very cool idea--THANKS!
Thank you for explaining and even showing the steps to make this. Getting a late start on Christmas buying so this will definitely help. Now they can receive a gift made with love. Thanks again!!
Enjoying your tutorials, very much. Your family, and friends, must become quite excited when gift giving season is right around the corner! Thanks for sharing your knowledge, x
This was a great tutorial. I have watched a number of these tutorials and have given up after the first few minutes because they are confusing. Yours was great! Thank you.
I made two today, it was very bulky and I had trouble closing the last seam. Now I've made 6 more using your method, it's so much better and faster. Great instructions and videos explanations. Thank You!
Christmas present construction here we come.....great tutorial as always. Your instructions are clear and to the point and you do not "over teach". Thanks for another great idea.
Thank you Craft Genie for taking the time to making this video. I have watched about every UA-cam video on the Microwave bowl coozie I just found your this morning and I have to say yours is the best!!! You are straight to the point and easy to follow. I love your template for the darts and will definitely use that because I will be making many of this pattern. I also like that you do not cut the batting and fabric the same size. I tried to make one of these over the weekend following another pattern and it was a big mess, I can't wait to try your instructions because I think it looks so much easier and makes more sense and will be much less bulk on the edges. The Wrap n Zap batting (for the Microwave) I used seems very thick and I think your pattern will be so much better to work with. I am so glad I found your video this morning I was ready to give up on making this bowl coozie now I really think yours will work for me :) thanks again!!!
I have seen several of these and yours is by far the best. I am making some for a fund raiser for our local firemen this weekend. I broke a needle in three pieces the other day because no one said to make the batting a little smaller than the outer fabric. Thank you so much.
This is the best video I have seen for this project. Thank you so much. We are going to make some in our small town to raise money for the volunteer fireman we support.
Just found your video and am so grateful I did. Yours is the best one out there and includes great ideas and techniques. Am just starting my third one which will be 14" for larger bowls or plates, with the 13" template for the batting. Thank you!!
+Helen Louise I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. I made a few larger ones this year too, my nephew considers a regular soup bowl more of a light snack, so I needed make a few larger ones too :-)
Just caught your videos and I'm sold. Thank you for getting straight to the project rather than telling us how many gazillion ways we can use the project. lol This is first time I've heard of bowl cozies and it's definitely on my sewing list for this weekend. Happy New Year!
Sewing doesn't come easy for me so I have to tell you your video was great! I did have a few mistakes but over all the microwave pot holders came out pretty good. Thanks for being clear and precise in your directions!
Love this video.. very simple instructions. Love the idea of the pattern. It will save me some time. I plan to make these and give them as Christmas gifts!
Fantastic tutorial!! Thank you so much for taking time to explain how to make these in such great detail!! It sure helps intermediate beginners like me!!
Hi Genie! I am your newest subscriber :) Your tutorial (out of the 5 or more that I watched for this project) was the most straight forward and uncomplicated! Loved it and I am getting started on mine right now :)
I bought a potato bag at a fair and the first time I used it in the microwave it caught on fire. They obviously didn't use the right batting. I am making a couple of bowl cozies for my mom. Thank you for the very good video.
I've made about 200 of these from other toots here. I do like your measuring method better than what I was doing. So much so that I sent this vid to a friend who wanted to make a few
Measuring the dart from the edge of the batting makes the dart much deeper and the finished inside of the cozy smaller. On my second cozy I measured the dart from edge of Fabric. This makes dart shallower, the inside of the cozy roomier and many more sizes of bowls fit. The first one only my small bowl fit. So I do recommend measuring from edge of fabric.
Thanks for the heads up Marlene. I read your comment and decided to measure from the fabric edge rather the the batting edge. Turned out great and holds several different size bowls. Thank you. : )
Thank you ; This is actually a pretty easy project, and one of those things people seem to like (I made many, many sets of them for Christmas gifts last year)
Best tutorial !! I've been wanting to try these, but could never find a tutorial I was comfortable and understanding with........until now!!! Thank you so much!!! I've made 3 so far. And I love these. I goofed up on the third one tho..I was trying to make a big one for my bigger bowls added the inches everywhere, even the darts 😬.. Yeah I have a nice "deep" bowl cozy lol@me. Didn't have my thinking cap on 😜😜 Lesson learned 😂
If you want another one for a casserole, the dart needs to be shallow (1" by 2.5") but all the way out to the edge, not just the batting as shown here. I start with 16" fabric square and 15" Wrap and Zap microwave batting for XL or 13" fabric and 12" Wrap and Zap. Same dart but as I said, out at the edges, not just in the batting. Good luck!!
mary by the 1" x 2.5" for the larger squares do you mean where craft genie measures down 2 1/4 you make it 2.5 and where she measures a invh on both sides you do 1/2" on both sides? thsnks
I used a different pattern several years ago and made dozens for our guild bazaar. Certainly wish I had known of your better measurements and use of a template. You've truly simplified the process. Thanks
I also use decorative stitches on the criss cross & topstitching, I find it maintains the shape of the cozy much better than a straight stitch, most importantly after washing & shrinking has occurred w/the batting. Wrap-N-Zap eliminates the need for 2 layers of batting. I like that your decorative fabric is cut bigger than the batting - its much easier to sew ...
Hi - I wanted to add a cautionary note that I picked up from friends who have sewing businesses. Cotton batting can have little metal shards and could spark in a microwave. MUCH safer is using Pellon's Wrap and Zap batting (my preference) and I have also heard that Warm Tater from the Warm Company is also metal-free. I make mine in a similar way but when I sell them I always add a caution to wash with cold water, air dry and to monitor while in the microwave. Also, both the top thread and bobbin thread need to be 100% cotton. Because I sell mine I am super cautious never to have anything that might melt or spark in my bowl cozies. I also take a smaller dart (1" by 2") after folding the fabric/batting in half. I can zip along and sew those darts quickly which is important for efficiency for my business. I love the detail of the decorative stitches - I'll have to try that!! Thanks
This was my daughter's Christmas gift from her highschool friends a few years back. It was the BEST gift ever!! (Well I told her it was) lol I've been using it!!Really tho it's so nice and convenient for all my hot soups, or stews. #bestgiftever #christmasiscoming
Craft Genie I have watched alot of videos on making these bowl hot protecters & yours was the easiest way to make them thank you so much I'll be watching more of your videos Do you make new sewing videos looking forward to watching them I made these bowl protecters as gifts for 2015 Christmas everyone loves them
+Sherry Smith Thank you. I made a lot of these this year too, and everyone has been telling me how much they use them, and how much they love them. I have several other sewing videos, just other little projects like this, and try to put out new videos often ( as time permits) . thanks.
Have you made these in a large bowl size and if so, What were your cut dimensions? Great video btw, I just made one after I watched it and it came out great.
I've made larger bow cozies, and started with a 12" square, and 11" batting. The dart will start out at the top 2-1/2" inches. I made my darts the same length, but you can experiment with that.
Hi Craft Genie.I have watch several vidoe's on these also and love your the best.I want to make sure I understand this part. After you do your dart do you go and sew all around the batting before Turing it out to sew the top stitch. That was how it looks to me.Just want to be sure.Love this and thank you for the video :)
+Carol Kimble Hi Carol, Thank you. You sew the darts on both pieces, front fabric and back fabric individually - no need to baste the batting in place just yet.. Then put the front and back together (pretty side to pretty side) and sew all around - just leaving a space open to turn it. I hope this answers your question, but it not, let me know.
Love your video! I've watched others but think your measurements will work better. I want go make these for participants of a breast cancer retreat I went to and now volunteer at.
Thanks for the tutorial, I've watched a few of these and yours look the best. I have a question tho... the material is 10x10 but you measure the darts from the edge of the batting what size is the batting?
Great tutorial thank you. Just wondered if I could use a 50/50 bamboo cotton mix for the batting? I've read polyester is a No-no! But can't find much information about bamboo fabric . Would appreciate any advice x thanks
I have not heard of anyone using bamboo batting in a bowl cozy. Although the label on many of the Bamboo battings I've seen state not to wash in HOT water, just cold or lukewarm. So if Bamboo can't take the heat, it may want to stay out of the microwave :-O
maybe I missed it, but what are the dimensions for fabric cut at 11" and 12" ? This is the best video that I have seen on this project. Great job. thank you
+ Hi Tajkatt tyler , thank you. I'm not a teacher, but I love the craft, and have tutored more than on friend on sewing or craft projects. That's actually how this whole set of videos started. I had several friends that wanted to know how I make my folded coasters, just seemed easier to video it. I figured the more clearly I can describe the project, the easier it will be to follow. Thanks for the nice comment :-)
What a great tutorial Craft Genie, thanks. Might add some cording or bias around the edges though would be easier to bias if the fabric was cut in circles rather than Rectangles to avoid having to bias around corners. Do you think that's possible?
Thank you very much, my wal-marts doesn't have it but we found it at joanns' providing they still have it, they said they did ,however they have said that before about different items and when we got there they didn't, so here's hoping, I tried on line............I want to be sure that they don't catch on fire, if any of my grandchildren should try using one when I am not watching.......I watch pretty carefully but there's always a firt time so getting what you recomended for safty.
Look for Wrap and Zap by Pellon or Warm Tater from The Warm Company to be extra safe for those kiddos. Joann's sells it and they have good sales and coupons.
I have a question regarding the measurements - for the darts - verbally you state you are measuring down 2 1/4" from the cotton - is this from the cotton fabric ( which would be 2 3/4" or the cotton batting ( which you show on the video - making today tks so much
BTW love your video, easy to follow. I'm anxious to get started. made the pattern already. I haven't used my sewing machine in 6 years. I hope it still remembers how to sew!!!

I’ve been making these bowl cozy’s for a little while and the way you do this is ten times easier thank you

Thanks for the heads up Marlene. I read your comment and decided to measure from the fabric edge rather the the batting edge. Turned out great and holds several different size bowls. Thank you. : )
Thanks. Your instructions are very clear. I had wondered about the bulk material I got using another's method.
Thank you! What a wonderful instructor you are!
Thanks! I just try to show these the way I'd like to learn. :-)
Love your video. I agree with some of the comments that your video tutorial is the best one around. Thank you.
your measuring method template is such a time saver
Love your videos. You have very nice useful projects.
I have made at least 100 of these and never thought to make a pattern. SMH. What a great idea.
Excellent Tutorial!! Thank you! I just discovered these and have made "one". I'm hooked!

Wonderful idea, great video! Thank you!!
Great tutorial - you really explained this very clearly. Thank you!
I make mine in a similar way but when I sell them I always add a caution to wash with cold water, air dry and to monitor while in the microwave. good to know, thank you
Mary Kowalski I just blazed my microwave last night. I had a little bit of polyester surger thread on the darts. I used wrap and zap. Big fire!
Good advice.
Your tutorial is the best of them all. Thank you! Do you have other tutorials?
Nicely done! Thank you for the great tutorial.
This was my daughter's Christmas gift from her highschool friends a few years back. It was the BEST gift ever!! (Well I told her it was) lol I've been using it!!Really tho it's so nice and convenient for all my hot soups, or stews. #bestgiftever #christmasiscoming

Great instructional video....Thank you!
Great tutorial! thank you for sharing!
Do the measurements for the Darts remain the same no matter how big the squares are???
Thanks for the tutorial, I've watched a few of these and yours look the best. I have a question tho... the material is 10x10 but you measure the darts from the edge of the batting what size is the batting?
+Lor Land Oh, sorry, I guess I never mentioned that. The batting is 9x9.I hope this helps you.
So no matter the size of the fabric, the batting is 1 inch smaller??
Bem interessante ,vídeo de muita serventia, grata

maybe I missed it, but what are the dimensions for fabric cut at 11" and 12" ? This is the best video that I have seen on this project. Great job. thank you
Very nice video. Thank you.
am curious if you are a teacher.. you present your tutorial so very clearly and concisely. thank you.

Why do you make the batting smaller?
Does the fabric and batting need to be pre-washed because of shrinking?
Also great with bowl of cold ice cream?😋
Just finished my 1st one. Pretty good but my points are not "sharp". Any suggestions for me.
I could be the batting is in the corner, trim away any excess batting that falls into the seam allowance, and that should help.
What a great tutorial Craft Genie, thanks. Might add some cording or bias around the edges though would be easier to bias if the fabric was cut in circles rather than Rectangles to avoid having to bias around corners. Do you think that's possible?
Make the corners rounded, then you could use a cording or binding on the edges

I have a question regarding the measurements - for the darts - verbally you state you are measuring down 2 1/4" from the cotton - is this from the cotton fabric ( which would be 2 3/4" or the cotton batting ( which you show on the video - making today tks so much
When making the pattern from paper, do you measure and cut the 10" or 9"?
I noticed you measured and cut on the batting (9")
When I did the video I used the batting measurement - but since then I actually found it easier to make a 10" pattern, and cut the darts that way.
BTW love your video, easy to follow. I'm anxious to get started. made the pattern already. I haven't used my sewing machine in 6 years. I hope it still remembers how to sew!!!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. This is a pretty easy project.. a good one to get you back into sewing :-) Let me know how your bowl cozies turn out!
