Thank you for instructions.....I really appreciated the not having to watch you sew each and every little seam. You were very clear and precise! Now if my brain memory and notes will let me bang out a couple of these for gifts.

Hi my name is Tammy and I have followed your tutorial on bowl cozies and I used 100% cotton batting 100% cotton material and 100% cotton thread and I tried one in the microwave and it caught fire so just letting you know for safety measures thank you
Thanks for your feedback I can't promise it won't happen as there are so many variables. Microwaves differ & the amount of time that you heat up food or liquids need to be taken into account. Even some materials that are labeled 100% cotton aren't really 100%. Sorry to hear that you had problems.

yes & no - flannel is typically 100% cotton so most likely - yes! Fleece is sometimes cotton & sometimes polyester. Just be sure to read the description before you purchase. There are great videos that show how to determine if a fabric is truly 100% cotton. Here are 2 that I've watched: ua-cam.com/video/kAlqLCVvyG8b/v-deo.html, ua-cam.com/video/kb4tCcnA6jo/v-deo.html
Hi Rose.... They are but they don't work as well for the Microwave Bowl Cozies. They're great marking pencils but you the cheap hotel-type pens work the best for this project.
She doesn't want you to know because she wants you to purchase her template. Generally it's approximately 1" in and 2" down on the folded side, then stitch from point to point and trim.
The measurements are on the folded side. Fold the cozy in half and make the marks on the outside corners 1" in from the side and 2" down. These are marked on the folded side. Then fold the opposite way and do the same thing. Make sure you trim to about 1/8" to avoid bulk. Watch some of the other videos on microwave bowl cozies done by others and they'll tell you the measurements. I like the rounded corners on this one, but will follow the directions on You Tube for the square one, but make my corners rounded. You can use a plate, bowl or other round object to make your rounded corners.
So sorry for the delay - Martelli makes the cutter.(martellinotions.com) They have a 28mm, 45mm & a 60mm. The 45mm is what you'll use for 90% of your projects but the others are invaluable for specialty things. Go check out my videos under the Playlist "Rotary Cutter" for more. You can buy from them or you can buy from my website, too. (I work for them as their Education Director.) I'm hoping to film a new video on which cutter to use when in the next couple of weeks.
so the only differance with your bowl and the plain square ones i that you cut more of the corner off and made this fancy dot and cutting board. like theindian mom said you just made this more complicated then the square one.
That's one to look at it. But I have a ton of people using my templates tell me that their bowl & plate cozies are prettier, more consistent, more accurate AND faster & easier to make. Especially if you're making these in multiples. Thanks for the feedback...…..

Donna Weldon you can do a burn test. Take a lighter or matches and CAREFULLY burn a piece of your batting. Watch how it Burns and smells. If burning very quickly and smells plasticky it will be probably polyester. If burning cotton it will have ash residue and wont smell like plastic. I hope it helps.
Hi Cheryl - sorry for the late response. For some reason, I am not getting notified of all of the comments. I'm in CA a lot during the year. Go to www.rustybarn.com to find a show that is closest to you. I usually have 2 free classes each day at all of their shows. Hope to see you this year!
Hi Sharon - I've never measured. When I get back to my studio, I'll pull one out & measure. The cool thing about the templates, though, is that you can change the size. Plus, I've just introduced a 10" Layer Cake Template & a larger 12" Plate Warmer/Cozy Template. You can see them in my new videos.
Can you use 100% mercerized cotton or does it have to be 100% cotton? I bought and used 100% cotton but it breaks so easy when turning these cozies right side out. Where do you buy your thread at? Thanks!! Love your videos. Today, I purchased your microwave bowl template. Woooohoooo, can't wait to get it!!
Hi Nancy - so sorry, I don't check Google nearly enough! The answer, sadly, is no - no mercerized cotton. It has a polyester core so it would not be totally microwave safe. I get bigger spools of threads that I use from a few distributors at the tradeshows but I also buy 100% cotton from JoAnn Fabrics. They have it on sale from time to time for 50% off so that's when I'll pick it up. And you're right; 100% cotton does break easily but it's the only thing that's truly safe... BTW - your package should be arriving today! Thanks for your support~ Be sure to enter my latest giveaway that I'm currently posting on Facebook!
I received my templates in the mail, thank you for the speedy shipment. The curves were customer requested. I've been told by many that they look a little more professional than the squared cozies. BUT... I do have the 10" & the 10.5" available in a square shape. They still have the holes for the darts. The Square Microwave Bowl Templates make them super fast & easy to whip up! They're easier to cut & sew & are perfect for newbies & anyone with hand or strength issues, too. I am debating on how to add them to my website since I already have so many options. Hi Trayne - you're right. You don't 'need' a template to make them. But the template with the Get a Grip Material and the holes for the darts & the X stitch lines make every cozy consistent & quicker to make. As in anything you do, there are a number of ways to make something. I can sew by hand or sew with a sewing machine. This is just one more way to make these & they are not for everyone. Based on customer requests, I now offer 8 different sizes.
