Security-wise I would say the opposite is true. SMS still goes over the same telco signalling APIs, meaning they do not touch the internet. Any messenger app is going to struggle competing with that in terms of security in transit.
In terms of security at rest, there's perhaps an advantage of apps over SMS, but I'm not even sure about that: end to end encryption "ends" on the device.

Segregation and discrimination are embedded in American history and culture. So weird that android as a reputation of being a "poor person" OS despite flagship Samsungs etc. being just as expensive as iPhones. My friends are all stuck in the apple ecosystem meanwhile I'm out here with my free Spotify premium, free UA-cam premium, emulating games, installing apps outside the store, having expandable storage, and a better camera, despite my phone costing about half of what they paid for theirs. I really do not get the appeal of paying more for a less functional product and then having a superiority complex about it. It's just tribalism, pure and simple.

I live in Europe and iphone uses here simply accept that they have to have Whatsapp and maybe 1-2 other messaging apps on their phone, because they know most people don't have iphones, and Android users don't like regular SMS. Iphone users here can't get away with being discriminatory against Android users, because they'd have to lose touch with like 70% of their friends and family.

It's in the best interest of Apple that this kind of bullying exists because that creates more live-long users for them.

As an European I see it this way :
    1) Americans don't travel so much abroad, so they do not need to spend a lot on international phonecalls.
    2) Market behaviour: They tend to use the default app for anything they do. Like : the default browser, the default mapping service, and so on.
    3) Unlimited text messages even for the cheapest plans. They basically send short messages.
    4) iPhone marketshare. In the USA, iPhone is over 60% meanwhile in Europe is 25%. That means that features like iMessage and Facetime, sending large files, reactions, read receipts are allready built in to the phone. And since 6 of 10 smartphones in USA are iPhones, it is easy to reach someone.
In other words if an American goes to Europe, and meets someone over there and wants to resch him/her remember that only 3 out of 10 phones are iPhones. So they will be forced to switch : no free texting, no Facetime, no imessage, no read receipts, no way to send files by the default apps on the iPhone.

The key thing that you’re overlooking is that other doubted joined out of necessity. If you’re paying for messaging and Americans damn near get it free, why would we be incentivized to use a third party messenger?
Why would an (American) iPhone use a third party app when they get the best experience with iMessage?
You can’t understand it because you were forced to use third party apps. Because there is no other reason to use third party apps, many Americans don’t have a reason to seek them out.

I think people use WhatsApp for it’s ease of use and the connectivity, not so much about privacy or data. It’s a chatting app anyway, not for serious stuffs. Just ONE app for everything and having the same people and world-wide connections, is unbeatable. It’s easy when you travel, everyone and every country is on WhatsApp. I had an Amazon delivery guy contacted me on WhatsApp in Saudi Arabia and it’s seamless. No change of phone number or sim, etc. it can be run on PC too.
Having group chats keep information and updates easy or group video chats seamless and organised in one place. And having ‘business WhatsApp’ over personal keep everything compartmentalised but not separated.

SMS is being actively replaced by RMS in the United States, which answers all the problems of SMS. It is being done so seamlessly that most people who use RMS aren't even aware of the changes. Messages are longer, end to end encryption is automatic, full size video and photography is sent between. And there is no ostrization of non RMS users. They merely receive an SMS version. Apple is always about gratuitous snobbery. Android is about interactivity without playing the elite. RMS is the answer.

In Europe most of the phones use prepaid plans where you have an insane amount of data (like 100 gb for 30 euro per month) and a fair amount of call minutes, but almost zero sms included. For example I pay 0.29 euros extra for each sms I send, on top of my monthly plan. So it is far less expensive to just use data to send messages via WhatsApp or any other messaging app. Keep in mind that here there are not many places without data connection, and also thanks to free roaming you can basically use part of your monthly data in any other EU country. Plus, you cannot send photos, videos or audio messages with sms... Basically I now receive a few sms a month, all from my bank or other services. I of course don't need to reply to those.

Technically this isn't true. It used to be true but it isn't anymore. Mobile operators just send sms using 3g/4g protocols as it's cheaper doing that than having a separate infrastructure to support. Because sms is ridiculous low bandwidth as it only uses a maximum of 120 characters per text using 7 bits the operators gave it away with unlimited texts because it hardly consumes anything but sadly it's also not that popular. The point is that under the hood it is sent using a data connection, your just using less bandwidth for it

As an American android user, who knows more android users than iPhone users, I feel like this video misses the point. Yes iPhone users are culty with their messenger service, no that's not why Americans don't use WhatsApp. It's viewed as a poor foreigner app. I dislike apple users as much as the next person but they're not to blame here. Also the lack of mention of FB messenger is weird. It's normally the alternative.

"But what if I were to tell you that here, in the United States of America, [...] the situation is a bit different?"
I would give a fake little gasp, clasp a hand over my mouth and pretend to be very shocked by the fact that the country who somehow continues to mistake its own third-world status as being "the best" would *also* mistake overpriced crap for good technology and thus miss out on technology that actually works 🤷🏻
(Warning, this comment may contain hints of irony)

WhatsApp sucks tho. If you don’t have iMessage that’s okay but we’re using SMS and nothing else (especially now we’re getting RCS on iPhone, there’s literally no reason to use WhatsApp)

I find it more interesting that WhatsApp has become the preferred method of messaging outside the US. It’s had loads of privacy issues in the past and is owned by Meta which hasn’t had a great track record. I don’t really see any unique features WhatsApp has over other messaging platforms. So it surprises me that it’s still so popular and other messaging apps haven’t managed to compete with it.

It's shit, but once something like that gets so big it's really hard to displace, because it relies on everyone else also making the switch. I use Telegram with those who have it, but leaving whatsapp entirely is not feasible for most people.

    • @stargazer162

The thing is that if you want to be able to send text messages to others, photos, videos, and be in group chats, you need to have WhatsApp. And people won't switch over to another app just because it has some privacy issues, if it were that simple we would all be using Linux by now since Windows is bloated with spyware, yet it's still the dominant OS. Once something becomes the standard, it has to be really bad for enough people to even begin to consider an alternative. Even as a work tool you still need it if you have a business for example or are a freelance worker because most customers will try to contact you through WhatsApp, and most likely won't bother writing to you if they have to send an Email or an SMS, or make a call.

I live in Turkey and iMessage is basically non-existent here. Even people who brag about having an iPhone all day don't know it. I believe that's because the default messaging app is known to be strictly for SMSes and sending media files via MMS was super expensive back in the day, so people hesitated even when there was a small group who had iPhones back in early 2010s, and Samsung got in the market faster than Apple did in 2012 with the Galaxy S3 series.

The problem with WhatsApp here in the U.S. is all the scamming. Too many various groups crowd it. It's annoying.
This is less frequent with SMS.

I don't understand why you wouldn't use SMS? Like, okay, at one point you might have had to pay per SMS, but I don't remember when that was, so probably many people my age and down don't either.
I have WhatsApp because I can text internationally for free with it, but that is literally its only use.

I think it’s the people’s fault to react that extremely. As a person one can choose to enjoy apple only features and to respect if others don’t. It’s like the lady suing McDonald’s for the coffee being hot instead of just being more careful. People forget they have their own choice and responsibility.

It took you a long time to say what WhatsApp's features are compared to SMS, and my American thought was, "Who needs those?" Not enough to sign up for a Meta service when SMS works fine. Except encryption, but most of my small number of messages are non-sensitive. As for Apple users behaving cult-like, that goes back decades long before smartphones. Just because those conceited T-shirts exist doesn't mean a lot of people are buying them.

I don't use WhatsApp because it's owned by Facebook. That's my reason, not device based as I own an Android. I do know my mom uses it to communicate with family living in the Philippines. I stand by my green bubble, if you don't like it we aren't friends simple as that. As a power user I need the control Android gives.

I was being left out of the Facetime and Iphone videos being a Android user. I kind of agree with your FB argument, but Meta does not tie WhatsApp to the FB and Instagram platforms. There are Android hacks for getting Facetime. I never had one work more than 20-30 seconds before failing. The problem with that is, for me to see if it's improved I have to beg a Iphone user to play along to try. Getting a Iphone video clip via messaging results in something the size of stick of gum and resolution that looks like 120P.
Whatsapp just works. Apple keeps the good stuff like messaging and Facetime in their ecosystem to keep users from escaping. Anyone focusing on colored bubbles has issues.

I’m American and travel abroad a great deal. We tried using WhatsApp on both of our phones and it took them over. Disrupted contacts, changed info like emails and area codes, just a lot of problems. We don’t care for apps that take over your device in those ways. Maybe it’s changed and doesn’t do that now, but that’s why we don’t use it.
