This video is a tribute to Monty Oum who inspired me and others who didn't even know this was one of his first major works on the internet before his time at Rooster Teeth.
I wanted to try and make something that at least somewhat stands up to the original. There's a decent amount of changes compared to the original. Don't worry there's ton of visual mistakes I've already clocked but because of time restraints I could not go in and fix them.
Anyway this video took an extremely long time for a number reasons mostly burnout. The first uploads of any instance of this video date back to June 2017!
I tried my best and hope you guys have as much fun watching this as I did making it.
I'm going to get back into uploading MUCH smaller but more frequent videos but I do need a little time to decompress this was a ludicrous amount of animation work and even with some poor motion capture this took way too long.
Please feel free to ask questions about this video I'm real enthusiastic about finally finishing this and being able to move on
that sniper/e-shield combo was crazy
If you pay attention during that bit where "chief" shoots those shields, Crazyhalo threw in the reflex mode sound from Metal Gear Solid 5, it works perfectly for that whole scene.

I saw Monty's original Haloid all those years ago. Such brilliant work. I didn't know he passed on. May he rest in peace. This is an outstanding tribute to that amazing work.

Haloid was actually the first time I ever heard of Monty. I was thrilled when I learned that he joined Rooster Teeth, and company that I was a big fan of about ten years ago (but stopped following around 2015-ish). It was definitely heartbreaking to hear that he passed away. But his legacy lives on in his work: not just Haloid, but Red vs. Blue and especially RWBY.
I remember showing the original to my friends and the discutions about how great his work was. Sad to learn he passed. R.I.P. Monty. Your work is your legacy!

@@gamma2589 Not really, it seems like that ONLY because of the content and stuff you watch and listen to on the internet, everything you see is tailored to your interests, so when somebody has one singular interest but a ton of different ones, they're less likely to see it, it wasn't everywhere, infact I only knew about it in 2016, I just assumed he left or got fired.
I love how Samus attacks first. Keeping with her "Kill now ask later" attitude. And master chief waiting to see if she was friend or foe Waiting to be attacked before retaliating.

I'm a 3D artist today, and I can definitely tell that watching this on high school was one of the main factors that drove me through choosing my career. Mounty shaped a generation of artists with love and proud of what they do.
I cannot say anything bad about your take, because any tribute to a person that inspired many of us back in the day, is a truly amazing and special thing.
So, thank you a lot brother, for keeping his legacy alive, and for the effort on this tribute, which btw, had a great ending by not revealing Nicole's face!

Anyway really nice work honoring the Legendary Monty Oum.
And on her armor from the first scene she's in, and zoomed in on her spartan ID on her chest for a full 10 seconds at the end of the animation. Are we sure people aren't just choosing to believe it's chief bc they like him better? haha

Monty really is an inspiration. He was self taught and while may not have been the best animator, he worked hard and so much creativity. I started animating, buut I wish I even had a fraction of his imagination

Wow I remember this from my childhood ,its a masterpiece remastered.
And for those who are confused ,that spartan was Nicole-458 AND Is canon that she used that armor ,and in fact she tested the same Mjolnir mark VI that masterchief (john) wears in halo 2 and 3

Edit (feedback): Overall the quality and production is top notch, it looks seriously well done. Particles, VFX, pretty much everything visual looks amazingly done. The big gripe is with animation in parts throughout the video, some of it looked "stiff" or "inanimate". Some area's looked to be a bit rushed on the animation side of things too. I'm not trying to discredit the animator/animators, but there could be improvements in places that look stiff. (mainly towards the end and the middle). Overall, nicely done man! 8/10
In fairness, Oum's original had some really stiff animation as well.

Eh,my boggets complaint was some scenes were a tad too fast...(you almost miss the shotgun through the elite...), there were some glitches like an elite head sliced off but Samus blade didn't do it, and finally...the beam saber...was more of a beam flag..

Facundo Centeno Nicole-458 was a character featured in the Dead Or Alive games.
She was made by Ninja Theory as a sort of tribute to Halo and Bungie. As thanks, Halo 3 had the Hayabusa armor based off Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden.
The whole animation when you think about it is so dumb. The abilities used by Samus, the random physics that make no sense, the flying! It makes no sense.
BUT DANGIT IT'S STILL JUST AS EPIC AS IT WAS 10 YEARS AGO
Samus can do all those things though besides the big laser and everything after the suit came off.
But that's the whole charm of monty's style. So dumb and senseless that It's actually awesome.

I agree. It’s almost too much for me though. It’s like that Halo Legends TV show horse crap. It’s too fast and irrelative to the game lore and mechanics. And I noticed in the credits they called it the Mk IV suit instead of Mk VI. I know I’m kinda harsh but I still like it. Kinda salty that Nicole didn’t blast Samus to oblivion.

Or maybe not? A single tribute is fine, but asking them to essentially recreate an entire portfolio of work is incredibly disrespectful to the original artist. It would be like asking someone to recreate all of Da Vinci’s work. It doesn’t matter if it’s older or there won’t be more, you can’t just go and redo all of it.
Just stick with number 3. The animation work here was good, and can be used to make NEW IPs, rather than recreating more of a mans work.

TBH I'd complain if it wasn't done so well. This is what halo should be in cutscenes. Spartans are legends on the battlefield so much so that theres internal conflict cannonically in the UNSC where ODST actually hate Spartans. To me this shows the gap that the games should be showing between what it means to be a one man army and being still human.

Spartan "N-458" (the number on her armour) is part of non-canonical Halo, her name is Nicole and her Spartan number is 458.
Samus is the badass space mercenary from the Metroid series. We all know her.
So since both are girls, and like the other person said that Monty liked girls that like girls, the animation had some lesbian suggestion.

so this brings a special smile to my face. I remember when monty showed this at anime boston so long ago. His videos were some of my fondest memories of the conventions and that time in my life. Seeing this done so well and as a tribute to him is really special. Thank you so much for making this.

@DragonKoal The part that was a ton of fun and silly? Yes it is inaccurate. But so is This spartan flying around doing matrix moves. I could have said something about the sexy fem spartan in the original too but I think the dance off is much more entertaining. So my 1 point off still stands mister.

But you also need to realize yeah, Chief is fucking bad ass, an amazing fighter, one of the best, but Locke in lore isn't some just nameless Spartan either. He's a Hunter, he's hunted insurgents, and Spartans alike. But what you fail to realize is that, Locke isn't just some pushover. He is one of the best in the hunting business, the unsc wouldn't send him after chief if he wasn't.
Sure, you could argue that it doesn't feel like it cause you've never heard of him before, but there's a LOT of characters in Halo rn that play a huge part that you've never heard of.
Ontop of that, I don't think chief was trying to kill Locke, at all. Nor do I think that he was fighting sloppy. He. Was. Buying. His. Team. Time. If he just destroyed Locke and fucking killed him, his team would've chased him, and chased after blue team. His only option was to fight Locke one on one and beat him to a state of not being able to fight back like he did because Spartans don't leave men behind, and Locke's team wouldn't leave him.
Just like John wouldn't allow Locke to reach his team, no matter what.
That whole fight was literally just Master Chief buying his team time to get away.
@@pIeasestand_by if you know the lore so well then you should be able to understand what they are mad about. its not that he didn't curb stomp Locke, its that they were slow and clunky. the armor doesn't slow them down, it makes them faster. that is what makes it so great of armor as it does more than just take hits. it amplifies movement and boosts strength. with chief augments he has dogged point blank machine gun fire without his armor, with it he is even faster. the fight with Locke should have displayed that speed from both parties, instead we got the two moving like they were underwater in a metal dive suit. but as for your other point of Locke has hunted Spartans. i don't know to much about Locke so i will need you to clarify. what type of Spartans? their is a very big difference between going after a Spartan 2 vs a Spartan 3. if he hasn't taken down a Spartan 2 before then ya, no he is no match for chief. that isn't to say he is weak, but still he is a far cry from chief.

I would love it if you did it again (or make a sequel) and give Samus the Metroid Dread Varia Suit, and the darker blue two-piece Zero Suit from Fusion (use the Smash Ultimate model).
i liked the graphical update and the addition of particles where they were needed (like the ghosts) and the change from the drill like samus from the ballerina twirl, but the change from the critically damaged chest piece to the bomb was a bit off from the original, BUT its more realistic from the chiefs usual tactics (thought the though of where was it kept that entire time haunts me XD as everything else is used from the field or brought) then the change of ending due to bomb was a little disappointing but then again I'm a bit of a sucker for the shipping ending of montys, and also slightly disappointed with the no master chick vs samus dance off after the credits :P

Why in the fk did 343 change the art . These classes Mark VI armor looks so great in 2019 . Reminds the days where halo felt like starship troopers or aliens .
It was always supposed to be about super soldiers, 343 made it about superheroes

@@TeryonTheHuman That's what I mean, 343 turned it from super soldiers to superheroes and the series suffered from it. Yes, in this animation the Chief ran faster than in the games, but it changes context when you consider that 343 decided to mass-print these super soldiers. It's the difference between Superman, Batman and a handful of the others like in the old days, and the thousands of forgettable heroes we have now like Snowflake and Safespace

This isn't Chief. It's N-458 which was on the chest piece the whole time... And the subbed text gave it away too... N-458 is a woman named Nicole. She's a cross-over character in Dead or Alive 4. She does do stupid shit like this.
If this is true then this needs more upvotes. Me and my childhood friends thought they pulled a whack move by making chief a girl. My mind is actually blown, 13 years later.

Damn this hit me, it’s been so long since I saw the original. The fact that you remade it so well is astonishing. Monty’s death really shocked me back in the day, a tragedy that he’s gone. Felt good to see this again though, and that you dedicate it to him. Rest in Peace Monty.
