I've been shooting with a M240 for almost four years now and the only issue is the slow buffer when shooting in 'c' mode. It's my daily shooter and as a tool for a press photographer it's perfect. It's worth every penny cause it's pure photography. I would love to have a Q2 too so I don't need to shift lenses and keep the 50 on the 240 all time. Thumbs up for the M240 - and remember old Henry Royce: The quality will remain long after the price is forgotten.... have a nice day and enjoy life!

Ok. Let me get this straight. The lens and viewfinder/rangefinder was working fine, as you could focus and frame fine. Same thing for the sensor. So, we can agree that this flagship camera (Leica's best rangefinder camera until 2017) was working as intended by the manufacturer.
With the above being said, we can all agree that this camera has nothing to do with any photographer out there not being able to grab a decent image with it. And it doesn't matter whether it is year 2013, 2023, 2033.

Best value for your money is likely a Leica LTM camera with screw-mount - they sometimes can be found for good prices below $400 and just might need CLA (same for any older M-based film camera, too). Look out for Leica III series (it doesn't matter much if it is a IIIc, IIIg, or IIIf). Main disadvantage of them compared to Leica M film cameras is the more cumbersome insertion of the film into the camera, but you get used to quite quickly.

@@MB-or8js They also have separate rangefinder and viewing windows, but that's not such a problem with zone focusing. I have a 1937 Leica IIIa which still works fine, but I don't use it now.

@@MB-or8js I own a Barnack and a couple of film Ms. The LTM is fun, but in no way would I want it to be my every day camera. Just having to cut the film to load it makes it a hassle, then there's the tiny separate viewfinders. It's small, and even pocketable if you have big pockets and a collapsible lens, but m2 and m3s, as well as something like an m4-2 are still relatively cheap and would be a much better buy IMO.

Hi Evan you made the Vlog that I really wanted. Yes I have Leica Lust and I am sold on the build quality and feel of the Leica experience but I realize that I can take wonderful imagery and also really enjoy all my Fuji gear. I am fortunate to have a number of different bodies so to satisfy my Leica Lust I dumbed down an XT20 to full manual and bought a couple of voigtlander lenses (which are superb by the way and absolute bargains) and have had such great fun without breaking the bank. So I am staying with my Fuji’s ( Xpro2 x100f XH1) and getting on with enjoying my passion and creating imagery and using the obscene amount of money I would have spent on the M240 to travel to great destinations with my wife, whilst still indulging in my passion for photography. The great thing is it’s all about making the choice. Really enjoy the channel and you saved me a bundle by confirming what I already suspected. Regards from the desert. Steve. Dubai

Just got an M240 this summer and haven't left home without it. Problem is there is a lot of banding in the shadow noise. My Fuji handles it considerably better. That being said it is challenging in a good way and incredible fun to shoot with.

Bought my M240 from B&H last year and I’ve already made my money back from using it on shoots. It is a conversation piece that helps me get clients, especially when they see the photos. Is it the best in low light, no but neither is the 5D MkII that I still use. I don’t know what your style of shooting is but based on the photos you showed in the video, it didn’t really look like you used the camera at it’s strengths ( I saw one pic of a hand holding your hat). If you really want to test it out, take some people pics, either portraits or candids. At the end of the day though, it really boils down to what you shoot, how you shoot and picking the best tool for the job.

Alex Webb`s new book will be released late September, I believe most of it was shot on the M9 & M240. Look at that work in that book and consider that the cameras were released in 2009 and 2013 and all that matters is the person using it.

I have a Q-P, and a complete Sony A7III system (complete means with several lenses). The main reason I will never ever buy a M system, and you are not mentionning it enough to me, is because of the focusing system. A telemeter is a very different way of manually focusing. For those who don't know how telemeters works, you have to align 2 parts on the viewfinder (which is optical, not electronic) to focus properly. You also need to frame your picture depending on the focal length you are using (remember, the viewfinder is optical...). I've used couple of rangefinder (back in the film days), and I have never been able to really appreciate them, because of the telemeter system. Some people do like telemeter cameras, but some, like me, don't. My advise is : try them before spending an money on it. I really liked this video, and the way you've concluded it. This is a wise conclusion. Thanks for your videos.

For me, the main reason to get a Leica (beyond the “Leica experience”) is having access to Leica glass and, because of this, having access to the smallest fullframe system ever, keeping a great IQ. Nowadays you can maybe get smaller cameras but not smaller systems. Mirrorless means today pretty small bodies with ridiculous big lenses. Leicas are perfectly balanced and they are the easiest equipment you’re always gonna have with you, ready to shoot (Leicas or your cell phone).

CollectiveMindz considering doing this exact same thing... leaving my X-Pro2 for a M-P 240 of M TYP 262. Any genuinely noticeable loss in IQ like DR? I rarely shoot higher than 1600, so I’m not too concerned about higher ISO use.

    • @CollectiveMindz
      @CollectiveMindz 4 роки тому +1

@@michaellozano936 I haven't done any direct comparisons between the two. The Fuji obviously has better high ISO but the Leica is fine up to ISO 3200 and you will see some banding at 6400.
If you can get proper exposures then the Leica has plenty to work with. If you under expose in low light you will get green color in shadows if you pull the shadows or exposure up in post. If you convert to black and white any under exposed shots they are fine.
So the camera is a little less forgiving if you don't know how to get proper exposures but if you do, it's a very rewarding experience.

CollectiveMindz thanks for the quick reply! Yeah I’m usually shooting between ISO 200-400, and in dim/night situations rarely push past 1600.
I often underexpose in bright daylight situations at ISO 200, so I don’t clip highlights and recover shadows in C1. Is this something that fares well with the M 240, or does that banding still exist even when recovering shadow detail at low ISO? Thanks!

@@michaellozano936 What settings would you use on a sunny blue sky day and I can try it out for you. Shutter speed, Iso and fstop.

      @vianditya 4 роки тому +1

@@michaellozano936 I went the same route, sold my X-Pro2 and some lenses and get M-P 240. I miss nothing, there's some noise if you shoot at higher ISO of couse but easily fix (or not) in post. Getting M-P240 is the best value right now because it has similar sensor with M10, just different processor..meaning you get noise reduction done in camera while on 240 you do it yourself in post. And remember this is full frame, so ISO 3200 would look as good as ISO 1600 on Fuji and so on.

I recently upgraded from a M8 to the M240. In my case its a huge upgrade ;-). I use to shoot Nikon, I loved it but for everyday carry on camera the Nikon was just to big. Even with the new mirrorless cameras they have all the same problem: The lenses are too big due to the AF. I think for product shots and some other commercial shots its maybe the wrong choice but for everything else more then capable. The nice thing with the M240 it has live view so with an adapter you can use basically any non Leica / M-mount lens on it. Great video !

MrBillboeing Exactly. I also prefer to take my M8 to trips over my Nikon gear. Mirrorless (in this case cameras with an EVF) are pointless in terms of size and handling compared to the Leica. Coming from some one who literally has your setup (Leica Q-P & M-P typ 240) I have a couple of thoughts. Yes, the Q 'feels' like a more modern camera. Because it was built in conjunction with Panasonic. It's an auto-focusing Point & shoot. it's a leica on 'easy mode.' A Leica M, on the other hand, is a completely different beast. The 240 challenges me as a photographer because it's the closest you can get to an analogue shooting experience without actually picking up a roll of film. I'm constantly amazed at ppl who look at the ISO on the 240 as outdated. We inversely talk about wanting huge iso range, while trying to shoot as low and close to 'base ISO' as possible. It's about as outdated as a Leica m6, sure. But it's still relevant : A venerable artistic tool that's past it's prime, but serves as a pathway to your art. Also a note on the lens type you chose: The Zeiss ZM has a bit of a focus problem as you change apertures. I went with the slightly slower Summarit 50mm 2.4 and it pairs like a good wine. Leica cameras work best with leica glass. It sounds cliche, but look at your Q. That 28mm 1.7 is absolutely gorgeous.

  • @bobalu58

I use the M-P and the Q2. Both are great. M-P = simplicity and does not, for me, make this an old camera. I have no problem with the files from the M-P. One of the main reasons I bought it, and bought it used, was that you just go shoot. Not overburdened with menu choices and buttons that temp you into some things that are other than the pure approach to shooting that is the Leica hallmark.

I bought a used Leica M (Type 240) earlier this year, and it is perfectly capable of delivering stunning images. After all, it's not the camera, it's the photographer (sorry for the cliche). You are right when you say that rangefinder cameras are all about the experience. I bought mine to get away from the technological wonders that are my other cameras, and go back to a slower, more considered style of photography. But beware, buying an "old" Leica can hurt your wallet, as I am right now waiting delivery of a brand new M10-P. Leicas are addictive to some. By the way, that Q you are using is four years old technology, so also qualifies as an "old" Leica. I believe it has the same sensor and processor as the M Type 240, but I could be wrong about that.

  • @Topsyrm
    @Topsyrm 4 роки тому +3

I've 3 M9s as well as an M6 and M2. IQ is subjective there are loads of us shooting older stuff that appreciate it. I get it won't probably cut it for your paid jobs but there's something satisfying about using the old gear for personal stuff. I find no issues with the IQ of my M9s and they need almost no PP to make images that I really like. I think you are a bit harsh on the older tech but I guess you need the most up to date for your work. BTW I also shoot Fuji X-T2 and GFX 50S so I know what modern sensors can deliver.

The great thing about Leica is that you are always evolving, and can re-sell the Leica for an upgrade, I would love the M10, but, after shooting with DSLRs, I'm downsizing to Leicas, for my retirement years, already tried the Q, Vario-X, love both cameras, and the unique Leica image, upgrading to the M240, going to play round with this camera and eventually move up to an M10...

Never shot a Leica, however, I LOVE shooting with old technology. I shoot purely for my own pleasure, not Social Media, 'likes', or whatever. Old camera technology gives a different 'look' than what the majority of everyone else is doing. Both my Nikon DSLR's are 10+ years old (I mostly shoot at night with digital, or in low-light) and for the most part, I am shooting with either "AF-D" and manual focus lenses. They render differently than the new(er) stuff. I LOVE them.
I have zero interest in the latest whiz bang wi-fi, GPS, touch screen gadgetry. Simplicity is divinity. I like heavy, well-built bodies, that have intuitive user interfaces.
For film, while it matters less, I would never part with any of my +35 year old Nikon F3's or Ai-s glass.

Image quality (as you described) is just one of the least important factor for professionals. The only ones that cares and depends on image quality are the commercial photographers, for them, more is always better: All the rest, can produce amazing work with any camera made in the last decade, and that´s why still the majority of pros still use 5 to 7 years old slr cameras, with not so different tech as this sensor has.

I constantly have the Q2 with me at family gatherings. The pictures are more like "environmental portraits", which is something I actually always liked most. I don't notice any distortion at 28mm, but it's a different look when you compare it to say a 50mm. I have the Sony A7II and I have hardly used it since I bought the Leica Q2. I totally disagree with you - the Leica m 240 P is a far superior camera to the Leica Q.........especially when paired with some of the best glass in the world. ie the Leica Summilux lens or the Lei a Noctilux . With this combination, and if skilled in shooting Rangefinders, you will definitely be producing the finest quality imagery imaginable, unbeatable by any other dslr on the market - I would suggest you are just not that familiar shooting Rangefinders, thus your imagery was inferior to what you produce with your Q or any other point and shoot camera with an EVF...........Rangefinders take time to learn and you can't expect to pick one up, having never used one before, and then produce stunning imagery. I suggest you do a little more research into the Leica brand. Also, they still produce the Leica m 240 p so you need not buy "an old dslr" when you can walk into a multitude of camera stores and buy yourself a brand new one quite easily. One more thing - I found it quite odd that in your 13 plus minute review of the 240p you never once showed us a single sample image? why was that?

By that I mean not enough time was given to hone the camera/lens attributes which is warranted when you shoot with a Leica. Like the objectively laid out points of pros and cons regarding predecessor version(s) of actual Leica M digital cameras. I am using several Leica rangefinder film cameras (from IIIc to M7) but can't convince myself to vest into a digital Leica M - I enjoy the Leica rangefinder experience simply with film where I see a much better ratio for what you get for your money. Prices for my film LTM and M cameras have doubled or even tripled in the past three years. For B&W, I find film superior to any digital camera and also enjoy the film development process. For the rest...like you said, I think there are better MLC options of other brands out there with better sensor technology for less money (which also can use rangefinder M lenses with adapter).

Still shooting a Leica M9 and Monochrom CCD; for me, the risk is worth the reward. There’s always a risk for older cameras, like shooting an Xpan or any Contax point & shoots-those break and you have a really expensive brick. It depends on the photographer and their choice of creative tool (along with their risk). As for image quality, I think it’s a dangerous philosophy for anything outside of studio photography. Find a camera that you love, master it as a creative tool, make an amazing photograph, mat and frame it-anyone who brings up imagine quality during a critique is missing the point. You’ll be fine with most functioning cameras out there. Look at the icons of photography, you’ll be hard pressed to find immaculate image quality in all their photographs. Eh but who am I?

I have both an Xpro2 and mp240. I did some side by sides blind tested and liked the Leica about 80% of the time. I keep the Fuji for when I’m casually shooting or want JPGS. I generally carry a film M so I can wet print in my darkroom, so the mp240 makes a lot of sense in keeping a consistent work flow between the 2. Also, if one has a good group of M lenses, it may actually be cheaper to get an M than having to purchase an entire new system.

I couldn't help but notice the lens you were using, was it an old 50mm? I want to purchase an M-p too, but I am not sure if there would be any issues with my summicron 50mm DR since it's from the 50s.
Haven't seen any videos talking about this.

Leica cameras in good condition are an investment and keep their value. That is my experience, for example when you sell a Fuji system you are lucky when you get one third of the new price for it after two years. I had some nice lenses to upgrade, didn’t loose much with Leica.

The only problem is that it can't be "fixed" in post. It's true, when compared to the M10 the M240 could have a better image when pulling shadows BUT IF you shoot your exposure like you should , then you should have an image as good as the most recent M10. The M10 is still a 24MP camera and it still is not as "good" as a SONY or Fuji as far manipulating photos in post to an extreme. If you shoot the right exposure your image will be as good as any current camera. I dare to make a comparison shootout with the M240 and other current cameras and no one would be able to tell the difference if the images are shown as shot.

Old Leicas aren’t about image quality, they’re about image type. Some people want a more vintage look and older Leicas are great for that. I love the look of my M9, especially with vintage lenses. And no modern camera can come close to that. You gotta find what image type matches your artistic vision. Because there’s no such thing as better image quality. Only images that better match your style.

Have you found yourself already wanting to upgrade to an M240? I have been bouncing between that and a Q for a little while now and can’t choose between the two. I’m having a hard time with the idea of not having autofocus in when shooting younger family and other fast moving subjects

I’m getting rid of my M-240 as we speak. It’s super cool and really fun. But it only works in good light. As soon as the ISO gets pushed up, the images have to be B&W otherwise they are disappointing.
Also, the buffer is so slow in C mode it can be really frustrating. I shoot a lot of music photography and although I have gotten some good results, I find myself really frustrated.
    X-Pro2 it is.

The thing is, where do you find high quality manual focus only lenses and bodies nowadays? It has just became a race of autofocus and AI.
I mean there is nothing bad about it, still every test out there is primaly on autofocus capabilities and image qualities.
There is also a lack on focussing on the details.
Even so a lot of the best pictures in history have a lack of perfect focus.
Sure, you can adapt old lenses or third party lenses but I guess a Fujifilm GFX50R just with a manual focus body(maybe just with IBIS) and with manual focus lenses, with lenses without an autofocus engine in it, so small and slick, I would bet on it a lot Leica buyers or potential buyers would go for Fuji.
    Just an example.
I guess others company could go the same way.
There isn't really a "slow down"- high end camera except the Leica M-line.
I wish there would be way more of it.
And like you said, Leicas M-line was always more for the experience even so the optics are superior.
I am definitly looking forward to go for a Leica some day, for the optics and the bodies, except yeah, like I said, big companies put their best sensors and knowledge in manual focus bodies and lenses as well.

Honestly I don’t see the point of buying this when I can buy a plethora of better cameras and great lenses for the same amount for an old Leica body and get way better image quality, more options in looks, feel, and experiences, glass and flexibility. Every picture I have seen from people that shoot Leica are subpar and it seems the only reason people use them is simply for the ‘clout’ and bragging rights of shooting on a $5000000000 Leica camera, or retired old men who don’t know what to spend their money on, yet their images are no better then every other average joe with a point n shoot or dslr. I’m sure the “shooting experience” with them is great, as I have not used one before so I cannot say for myself. Simply based on observation. But I really can’t see how justifying paying $3000-$6000 for a under spect, slow, outdated “Leica” camera is worth it for that price. Gotta have that red dot on your camera I guess...
Or you could just buy a Fujifilm or Sony digital camera or hell, even an old film Leica or Hasselblad camera for 1/10th the price plus a ton of glass for better images quality and flexibility.

What is your opinion on the Nikon D5600? I saw a few "good" 2nd hand offerings (one guy had 4 lenses) and other dude sold for the same price only with one lense (the 50-300 I think).

No man! Maybe you have a defective leica. I've had a leica M-p type 240 for many years (exactly how many, not sure) and the image quality is NOT second class by any stretch of the imagination. I honestly do not know what you are talking about. You can make huge prints without problems. I think you are just nit picking over really trivial unimportant issues and present them as if they are everything about this camera and that if you are to use the leica type 240 you have to be prepared to put up with some major compromises. No way! Where do you come from with that kind of an assessment? Really, honestly, in some respects its a specialty camera and you just have to appreciate it for what it is. It's a great camera and I submit that 98% of the leica owners are probably far wanting in their ability to realize its full potentials. I can promise you that as long as my leica MP (240) remains faithful to me I will never get rid of it.

Well, image quality from Leica M10 or the new Q2 is just so so in terms of DR or low light sensitivity. I would say it is similar on my APS-C Sony A6300 but who cares. If I prefer to shoot with range finder. would like to feel and enjoy old style shooting in a digital camera. Image quality or any technical stuffs need to be out of the brain for a while.
