Leica is a special product it’s just priced out of 90% of what most photographers can afford. I’ve always wanted one I won’t deny that but hard to justify the price tag.
Thats because you cant afford one. Its not meant for people that have no money. I want a new 458 ferrari too but at 600k, I had to settle for a new Mercedes convertible at 142k.
I Bought my SL2 in August and I am in love... I sold all my Sony gear and I am now all in with Leica. I highly recommend the Sigma line of lenses for L Mount. Their 35mm ƒ1.2 and the new 85mm ƒ1.4 lens just released are spectacular and work perfectly with the SL2. Keep the Leica content coming, ignore the haters. :-)
Evan, it always seems like you're rushing through the video. We want to be here. We like you. Take your time! If you give me a few more minutes, I'll stick around, just to hear what you have to say. It would be nice to hear you sound like you WANT to be there....
I own its sister camera, the Panasonic Lumix S1R which I love because it's different, by far the best built camera in that price range and I got it for an absolute steal (half price with less than 500 shutter actions). I would definitely upgrade to the Leica SL2 purely because of the build quality, design features and just how it makes you feel when you shoot with it. You buy a Leica to last 20+ years and maybe pass it on to your kids, you buy a Sony to last 5 years at the most. That should be taken into account with price. ALL modern full frame mirrorless cameras are great, they all have a similar output so you have to choose based on what makes you want to shoot more often… And that's where the Leica shines, and that's the point of a luxury product, it's about how it makes you feel. Enjoy that thing for many years to come!
The people that get pissed off at creators about cameras, are usually the people who aren't out shooting. If you're involved in your own work, you don't have time to waste and usually don't care about who's shooting what. At the end of the day, it's just a camera. However, I'm glad you found something you love. If you're happy, that's all that matter.
Don’t always agree with your view points but when I bought the SL2 it completely took me of the market. But dude you need a SL lense... how can you spend that much money on it and talk about the Leica look and then use the LUMIX 28-70 when there is the Leica 24-90?
The Lumix is Leica certified and is very good. It's unfair to assume someone has the money for a Leica lens straight away. I guarantee he will eventually get some Leica lenses, it's just how it goes with Leica. When I bought my M Leica I swore I'd never get any Leica lenses for it, but now I own 2 summicrons and 1 summilux.
each to their own, but I'm with you on this one! 24-90 IS RIDICULOUS good. Sharp all the way through the range and IQ is mind blowing. I personally feel if your sticking with a 3rd party lens then the lumix s1 is also a great camera to get with it and you save the cash. If you get the SL2 with a 3rd party lens initially, with the goal of getting an SL lens down the line, I think that makes sense. Thats just my 2c though! Either way as long as we all enjoy shooting! 🤘
I remember years back when using a Canon F1 at that time, I layed my hands upon a Leica R6, which did pretty much the same as my camera, but felt SO much better let alone the optics. No being a pro Leicas are way beyond my possibilities but I'd surely get one if I could.
The thing with Leicas is, you can get something that does 90% the job at 50% the price, but that last 10% you just have to pay up. Coming from a Bessa user and upgrading to an M6, the Bessa was perfectly fine and serviceable but the Leica is a whole new level, everything just *works*.
Having great results using my SL2 with M mount lenses. They work flawlessly and like you said, the camera is really not that big. A super compact kit. Cheers man.
We made a blind test between Summilux 50mm, Lumix 50/1.4 and Sigma art. Result? No One could really say what was Leica glass. It was more a guessing. Nowadays there are almost no bad lenses anymore and only some older Leica lenses or specialities like a noctilux have a unique "look"
Footage looks great mate. I know how you feel with niche camera’s... I’d prefer my Ricoh GRIII over most other camera’s! Cheers from The Netherlands 🇳🇱 🤙
@@RanftEvan As an owner for both GR III and Leica QP, I can say I take 80% of my photos with the GR - it's just always, always there and the results are more candid and natural. But when I take my QP, I go shoot with a purpose. And yes, there is just something to the Leica photos that other cameras don't have and yes, it's really hard to describe / point out. People might grill me for this, but outside lowlight and the obvious DoF differences, the image quality is very comparable but the shooting style is TOALLY different, which just makes you produce different type of photos. Biggest advantage of the GR III over Q? Shooting different angles thanks to it's minscule size, weight and handling. Biggest advnatge of the Q over GR III? Low light, viewfinder and focus speed.
As a previous Leica SL owner I recommend to get the L to M adapter for better image quality. Since there are also a lot of secondhand M lenses available.
I shoot on film with a Leica M3. Does that make any practical sense? Probably not. I have my reasons, but ultimately, it's just what I enjoy. Do you need a better reason? I don't think so. Happy for you, Evan. I think this camera move will serve you well for many years to come.
Good review. I am a Z6 user for quite some time now and do a lot of low light photography. Regarding the comment about more megapixel leads to more noise, it is true, as long as the total sensor size is held constant. So higher megapixel sensor will have smaller area per pixel on the sensor. Smaller area means less light captured so the signal to noise ratio decreases with smaller pixel area ie higher megapixel. So we loosely call this more noisy, but it is the ratio of the signal level to the noise that is worse not the noise floor of the sensor itself
It’s impossible to intellectually justify the cost of a Leica without ever touching or using one. Once you actually use one its impossible to, at least, better understand why and how the cost is justified. Think “military grade” vs the “consumer version”. I got an SL2 and i use vintage Leica R glass. Life itself is no longer the same. Happy shooting!!
Hey Evan. Yes, you are a Leica-Fanboy......but I am almost ;) Got a Leica Q2 5 Weeks ago and I m so happy with it! Yes...its a lot of money but you get what you pay. Bro, this camera… I’m supposed to be feel good taking pictures. But what the fuck is this battery life? I last way goddamn longer in bed. Convince me not to return this shit box.
It’s an artist’s camera, but a photographer will appreciate the quality of the image. I did both art and photo back in the day use film I used two Leica M4s believe there was such a difference I could right on the light table just looking at my Leica and Nikon negatives in their neat little sleeves. Leica negatives jumped off the table. I could go on and on. Even the little Leica Vario X I use only 16 megapixels puts the 24 megapixel and higher to shame … I’m willing to try Nikon D-800e of bodies I think I can be happy with PR or wedding photos but Art photo has to be the Leica, I miss that one black enamel M4 with the 35 and 90 lenses that just perfect… if I find it I’ll just digitize the negatives… Art is worth the extra work… commercial work people want quick and right now.
so you are not going to mention that you can’t even tilt the screen and the autofocus sucks? oh and also colors straight out of camera aren’t important because you edit photos anyway not saying that this camera is bad, it’s just overpriced for the specs, but offers great durability and the red leica logo which is the main reason why people buy it
My XT-4 does the same except for resolution. But my bank account loves it! In the end, you are a really good photographer Evan, and you know how to run a business, so gear doesn't really matter.
Evan, I so look forward to your videos and super excited that you found Leica. A guy with your kind of talent is gonna kill it with that camera. Never apologize for owning a Leica - I believe that it is a camera that “inspires” to be picked up and shot. Since getting my SL2 (I’m new to Leica also) - I cant put it down. Keep shooting and thanks for all you do man!
Definitely agree. It’s all about preferences. I like to see ytbers speak their mind. That’s how it should be. Great video, happy shooting and consider yourself lucky to be able to shoot with a Leica. It’s nonetheless exquisite👍
200k congratulations. 👍 I think your most used prime could be a Leica and the rest with sigma or Panasonic. It would be better to buy a Leica lens because of the value it can hold over time better than the other lenses.
What a beautiful camera! Stunning images and a great review! This helped me understand cameras with this price point. Some of the most iconic images of all time have been shot on Leicas and its cool to see they have a powerful mirrorless camera like this one.
You focusing on creativity rather than gear and specs is probably the only reason i enjoy your channel so much more than other photo channels! Keep it up!
Reviewers are paid to show a product in positive light, if they are leaving out something like accuracy of a camera's AF, you know that the AF is poor.
I just got my hands on a used SL2 and so far really impressed. One thing I noticed is that the joystick feels a little loose/delicate, like it has more play than I'd expect. Did you notice the same thing, or is it perhaps just the one I got?
I'm a Sony a7r3/a9 user, decided to jump off the cliff, got an SL2 with Sigma 14-24 and Panasonic 24-105 and seriously, it's changed the way I shoot. I love it. No, I can't defend that, but damn, I just wanna take it everywhere. And see if I can shoot better, the same things I've already shot. It's part of the limitations and advancments. Also, it's method of updating firmware is the best I've ever seen.

Yo, lovin your videos my man! It's great to see amazing talented photographer's actually using this camera and Leica systems in general. Yourself and Matt Day are literally my heros making this your go to cam! I agree its not for everyone due to the price, but for those that take the plunge they will truly be amazed and happy with there purchase! There is just something about the feel of it in the hand and the IQ it produces. Also, have you tried any of the SL lenses? If you haven't, keep it that way.. otherwise if you try it all you'll be doing is trying to figure out how to own it. That was my story... I now own 3 of them 🤣🤣. Poor AF but a happy happy man haha
That camera is no Canon R5 or Sony a7r4 level. Leica is like have a mercedes-Benz G wagon. Expensive and get you to work just like any other car. It’s class it Luxury damn sure ain’t worth no 6k 😂🤣😂🤣🤣 Fuji is my favorite camera. Don’t own one because auto focus is trash. Can’t be out here missing shots🤦🏾♂️ it do look sexy tho
I love how you don’t know that Panasonic designed the internals and Leica software like your leica photos app and other software of the SL & SL2. that’s all made by Panasonic.

Hi Evan, would be great if you could share a video about the experience of the SL2 with M lenses and how the experiences compare. The focus peaking looks promising with that hi res EVF of the SL2.
Oi. No offense but the justification here is word for word someone who buys into the name hype. Side to side comparison there's no Leica look lol. At least not in any sense that makes it superior..and definitely not enough to justify the cost. Cost also isn't just the camera body. But as you said, batteries are $300. Lenses are $2500-6000 themselves. If you did an image comparison of this with an $1800 Panasonic s1 you'd not be able to know the difference
This camera is basically the most pointless camera ever. You can just buy leica lenses and attach them to your Sony A series and have a better camera. Leica at the end of the day is just a Rolex with simple tools and features. If your a admirer of tech don’t buy this camera it’s a waste. I have owned both SL and SL2. Just go buy a leica m10 and a Sony a7iii. You’ll be much happier with those setups
I've recently purchased a used Leica Q, I found myself heavily swayed by your feedback on them and your style. It's currently away for a service but I've been loving it! I've also recently picked up the Panasonic equivalent to the SL2, the S1R. I have the same 24-70 lens, and it's a kickass combo. Thanks for the review and thoughts on the SL2, its an awesome bit of kit. I'm hoping that with the new firmware coming for the S1R, we should get the same or at least similar video features, since they are almost the same camera.
Awesome video, I actually picked up the original SL (Typ 601) pre-owned recently and I'm loving it. I was originally Canon, then went Sony, and I gotta say...I do understand the "Leica look" now. I don't judge anyone for whatever they end up shooting with, at the end of the day it's a tool for the art we create. Fanboys aside, there are some genuinely good reasons for shooting Leica and you said it best in this vid. And with a mixture of glass options with adapters, the Leica system is more accessible now for sure!
good video thanks! Just got an SL2-S and an SL2. Love the S 24mp model. Looking forward to seeing what 48mp looks like at 50iso. I'm using Carl Zeiss M mount lenses which are lovely. I'm looking at the Panasonic pro series zoom lenses also (24-70 and 70-200). What are your thoughts on these after a good amount of use? Thanks.
xt4 has the same thing tho, but I get it, it has a certain look. Thats the reason I switched from Canon and Sony to Fujifilm. There is a certain "feel", but hey, whatever makes you a better shooter
more noise comes with more resolution, because the fucking sensor keeps the same size. thats why bigger resolution with 35mm make almost no sense. great video though !
I preferred going all the way around and I took the lumix S1R + the Leica SL 24-90 ... you compare the SL2 with Sony and Canon but you forgot the S1R... considering it costs 2500€ only including the 24-105 that you can sell for 700€ easily and there you are with a S1R for 1800€...
If you are happy with it, ok, no problem. But in terms of image quality, autofocus and overall performance, other brands do the same or better with half the price. You cannot even compare it with the top cameras of Sony or Canon. Of course they are not built for the same type of work, but you get a lot more on the A9 or 1Dx. Leica sells just a luxury feeling.. All the photographers I know that do not shoot usual brands, just shoot Hassel for the medium format. Almost nobody uses Leica on a profesional level, because of the overpricing, you cannot justify it running a bussiness.
@@AllAboutNat What percentage could it be? I suppose that less than 1% of the photographers all around the world. I know that for Evan it can be a good investment, as not so many youtubers review Leica. Leica is the best by far on getting the focus on the photographers using it. He uses it as a differential to others, which is a great idea, because everybody out there is using/reviwing the common brands. But in terms of quality and performance, no upgrade at all. In fact, for youtube videos, instagram and regular size prints, you can use any camera of any brand around 1500$.

Whats your point?
Really hoping you move to 4K eventually. Such great content would look so good in 4k!
Hopefully I can experiment more with that!!
@@RanftEvan Your videos would really benefit from the higher bitrate and less UA-cam compression in 4K. Your photos are top-tier and some of the best out there but man, the 1080p low bitrate video really looks so unremarkable on YT.
Stoked for your future! Going to be picking up some of your clothing line too because that shit is too good man. Congrats on everything!

Great content as usual Evan. Any chance of a review on your S Pro lens with the SL2. Thanks man
Hi Evan, would be great if you could share a video about the experience of the SL2 with M lenses and how the experiences compare. The focus peaking looks promising with that hi res EVF of the SL2.
Evan, what's your usage of your Q-P been like after getting the SL2? Does the Q-P stay at home more?
I have always wondered the hype with Leica so I’m excited to watch this 😀😀
Hope you enjoy!
How about the autofocus in video ? Is it Sony good ? Canon good ? lumix good ? or Q2 good ?
Whoa.... I clearly stumbled upon the wrong channel. When a lens cost more than a car, I'm out of my league. Sorry, you other folks carry on. Cheers!
Body Only Price $6k
XT4 also has a button that changes video to photo mode (with separated settings)
Who cares?
Amazing images out of that SL2.
Caveat-You might consider eschewing the caffeine before your next video so you won’t talk so fast. :-)
good video thanks!
I’m trying to decide if I want to get the SL2 or SL2-S. Because I’m gonna make the jump to full frame in 7 months or so.
more noise comes with more resolution, because the fucking sensor keeps the same size. thats why bigger resolution with 35mm make almost no sense. great video though !
Why does this Leica look so much like the Sony A7/A9 series? Do they share the same designer/manufacturing?
Get the Panasonic S1R. Same camera with better ergonomics at 1/3 the price.
I am about to buy a cage for my SL2-s. Do you guys recommend 8sinn or Kondor Blue?
Leica is the apple of cameras... it just have some magic on it
I would love(and buy) the camera if it had a tilt display or at least a tilt EVF like the Fuji GFX50S…
You use an adapter to put on the m lenses to the sl2? I’m confused on which lens is compatible with the sl2
Really hope the X-H1 successor copies this design some
So people can talk or debate but there is a Leica look and I do agree with others that the Leica glass is most important.
More SL2 vids plz!! Also check out the lumix 85mm released. Thx
What is specialized about the GFX? I see it as an excellent all-rounder.
Good to see you eventually found you dream camera (until the next one ;) )
If you are happy with it, ok, no problem. But in terms of image quality, autofocus and overall performance, other brands do the same or better with half the price. You cannot even compare it with the top cameras of Sony or Canon. Of course they are not built for the same type of work, but you get a lot more on the A9 or 1Dx. Leica sells just a luxury feeling..
All the photographers I know that do not shoot usual brands, just shoot Hassel for the medium format. Almost nobody uses Leica on a profesional level, because of the overpricing, you cannot justify it running a bussiness.
Thats not true actually. I know a few pro photographers that only use Leica. The quality of their lenses is on another level imo.
@@josuapraiz We shall agree to disagree :)
@@josuapraiz We dont worry what others use. They make no money. I do professional work and I like to reward myself using what makes me feel good.
Not using the Vario 24-90 on that body is criminal...
I would like to learn ho to do color grading if you can help me with that please
Get the Leica glass! The 50mm Summicron will blow your mind on the SL2.
You can pick them up used at a fraction of the price 😯
Man! I enjoy watching your content to see the photos you take! This does really look like a great camera!
Street with the SL2. Better wear some ninja camouflage. Take that incredible QP. 👊
You're one of my favorite creator out there.
I desperately wait for your uploads.

Damn. You do have a different energy in this video. You’ve got some heat in your voice. I don’t mind it tho, great vid. Keep it up!
dude i think my leica q was worth every single penny.
Probably not worth it but it's still pretty cool and if you got it, treat yourself
for me it would make more sense to buy a Panasonic and spend money for the Leica L mount primes. they give the unique look. just saying.
Which Panasonic do you think would be most similar?
Was this more unique the X1Dii?
This camera is almost exact same thing as Panasonic S1R, only difference is in price.
there is literally no leica look. this guy is a mark as mark.
Really want this little guy
Hey man, where did your friend get that camera/dagger shirt?
Hows its low light performance?
Are you looking to be a Leica ambassador?
