I play a Friedman 50, Marshall 1959 slp and a mini silver jubilee, and my cabs have either 25 watt greenbacks or v30’s, and I recently got one of these 1936 cabs with the g12t75, and I’m really digging it. Way more than I thought. I hope this helps with anyone wondering about it. Those g12’s are really percussive and tight and don’t have any harshness to them at all. I bought the cab with the intention of putting in some extra greenbacks I’ve got, but I actually think I’m gonna leave it how it is. Anyway, rock on everyone. Just my 2 pennies

+Moonshine TRIO re: Greenbacks. I have the Her.Greenbacks, noted for their unique mid dominant voice. I also have Blue, Gold, Her.Cream, and V30 as well as Eminence. No JTM45 here, I use EL84 or 6L6 amps with them all, and can say for sure, the Her.Greenback took the longest to fall in love with. I mic everything. For the Greenbacks I am edge heavy with the mic position, it gives a massive throaty roar, perfect for Mesa Dual Rectifier modern thud. None of the other speakers come across so rooty. It took a while to appreciate, since its the only speaker that does this so well. Her.Creams are more neutral, so for classic rock riff, the Creams are nice. V30 is the familiar speaker, the most recorded speaker in the business. Blues, are like a timewarp backwards. They hopelessly put off a weaker tone many times, I actually have to boost their volume well above a the rest to get them kicking, but once they do starting putting out, its another favorite. Green and Blue are the two weirdest speaker voices, that when mic'd up successfully will give off a unique 'traditional' voice that no other speaker can match. Golds are loud, killer, neutral voiced as well. Golds are very middle of the road, good at all times. I know the shit ain't cheap, but keep adding more and more speakers and you'll come back to the Greens.
agree 100%. These amps are meant to cook. I have always believed that the amp should give you the drive, and maybe just use a boost to tickle the tubes. Most distortion pedals color the sound way too much.
Sounds good. One of the better demos. Volume only at 2 though --- I use a JTM 1 W on a 4X12 cab with 3 Vinage 30 and one Jensen. 1 w is loud at home --- Plan on buying a JTM 45 anyway.
i am assuming you are talking about the 50th anniversary 1 watt head jtm? been trying to find one of those but afraid it may not be loud enough in the house. I might be wrong based on your comment, which would be a good thing.
The low volume settings don't do this amp justice. I have it and purchased a hot plate and it is awesome. The bright boost on the hot plate more than makes up for trying to play it a low volume. Put a Caline English Man in front and oh my goodness! Inexpensive pedal but I've tried several more costly and it just has that thing that makes this amp scream without changing the sound of the amp. I love that you did a demo of this but you should buy a hot plate and check out some OD pedals. I would love to see another vid with those included. I need to learn how to make demos because I want to post this so bad. The wickedest blistering sounds I've ever conjured then just turn off the od pedal and back into warm buttery sparkly tone nirvana. Killer amp! Thanks for the demo!
These setting seem like he was trying to get the amp to emulate a 1959 slp, which he did a pretty good job at. More mids, more bite, tighter lows, more preamp drive than tube sag since he kept the master relatively low too. The amp's natural tone is much cleaner, warmer and more fluid, partially in response to the rectifier tube moderately driven power section of the amp. Video still sounds great, and it really shows the versatility of the JTM45.
Could it do hard rock? Or would it need pedals? This is not my main focus of course, if i wanted that i'd buy a JCM800, just wanted to know. Same cab as this
@@s0da.-. Modern hard rock? Probably not. I consider JTMs good for anything up to and including AC/DC. Once you go heavier, you really want solid state recs and a tighter low end a la JCM unless you want the flub for more stoner/doom type stuff. It does take fuzzes and pedals in general pretty nicely.
great demo ,i got a question for you what are you using for reverb ,the one thing i wish marshall amps had was built in reverb, i know some solid states have it but im a tube guy myself ,if can reply on the reverb you use here it would be great thanks
If you can get the normal volume up to about 6 and the high treb around 4, back off the treble a smidge then dime the presence, you'll get THE Marshall tone. It'll be loud, but you'll never want to play it any other way again. It's the sound of ages.
Totally agree, v30s are cack, ive 2 4x12s loaded with em and theyll soon be outta there and replaced with greenbacks, ive a 2x12 zilla cab loaded with g12 65s and they sound great, g12 75s are pretty good too i find, marshall cant be getting it wrong, I'd a jcm 800 4x12 with them and sold it like a dick lol.
Why did you buy a JTM-45? Amp on 2, no greenbacks, then a BB Preamp, all your Marshally goodness is destoyed. Presence almost off- no one needs bass on one of these or 1-2 at most- mids on 4- treble on 6-8- forget the channel jumping- into one and turn it to 8-10. THAT'S what Marshall goodness is about. Move house or remove the neighbours by playing it as it should be played. :-)
I have an original early 60's JTM45. I run it through a Mesa 2x12 cab (Celestion V30's) or Marshall 1960AV 4x12. Just wondering how your cab may compare to the Mesa 2x12. That's a Marshall 1936 cab right?
The output tubes were not converted to 5881, were they? For some reason I thought these were reissued with EL34 or KT66's. (Hell of a demo! Was on the fence about the next Marshall to shop for. This video sealed the deal. Cheers!)

agree...go with the vintage 30's...warning,they will sound like rubbish until broken in..so much so you may feel the need to throw the cab out the window!!!! but they will soon warm up and all the harsh tones will give way to a big warm fat tone that will compliment your jb pick up set,another good choice cheers
when i saw that you had the bass set on NEUTERED i was horrified....cos i keep the trebl and presence on 2 and the bass dimed ALWAYS, for 40 years, but you sound great here.... i guess that shows that there are NO bad sounds on a 50 Watt Marshall.
This is a JTM45, not a 50 watt plexi and the difference is huge. JTMs are round, warm, spongy and lower gain. They have tube recs. Plexis are bright, harsh and extremely unpleasant in isolation, but have great percussive feel because of the solid state rec, can handle more gain as a result, and also sit perfectly in a mix. If you ran a JTM at those settings, even straight into the high channel, everyone in the building would laugh you out of it and your bass player would whoop your ass. You never run the bass that high on these amps - they have gobs of it on tap. But presence and treble on 2 would be what "neutered" it and made it sound like you were playing from the next room over; they both need to be way up on these to match the huge low end they have (if you're jumping channels)
@@oneox958 i do like the percussive effect of the SS rectifier, with the bass cranked it gets real 'thumpy', but i hate EL34 tubes cos they are 'brittle', fizzy and harsh. 6550s are my favorite power amp tubes, the old ones, but im liking KT88s better nowdays. So ive compensated somewhat to get 'my sound'. Thank you for your response, though, i learned something from that- i guess youre speaking of 'sag' with the tube rectifier ?. I like that sound too, i have a Fender Deluxe RI im really liking now too, after a few tweaks. New speaker, vintage tubes, and it is 22 watts of fun. Im also building amps now as well, and im planning on using tube rectifiers in those for the most part.
Great amp! Sounds sweet, especially clean. It doesn't do Zep so well, that's Super Lead territory. Perhaps in the bright channel only with more gain, and maybe a treble booster. A bit of slap or a quick spring verb too. That said, hella jealous bud.

Michael Craig The amp is already fairly bass heavy. This is essentially a Fender Bassman (designed for bass use) with KT66 tubes (in this one 6L6GC/5881), which also expand the low end. Plus he's using a Les Paul with a pretty hot bridge pickup. Cutting bass isn't a problem. Plus if you boost everything, nothing is boosted.
i got a mojotone jtm45...and cranked its tube distortion is nothing like the old marshalls..not a sweet tone at all.....however....put a tube screamer in front of it..and its "that sound" you want

That's the honest truth and disparity of the world we live in. Just google it. There's usually one on ebay $2000 AUD.
roeletti no, played for 10 years in a three piece and i dont think i ever had it past about 2, but it sounded so perfect on all different types of music styles too.
+dji zzah If you're happy with this setup, with lots of headroom. Don't listen to me at all ;). But if like a little more spongy amp feel. You might like this 30 watt jtm. Or even a Fender champ. You can turn them up just as loud, but the amp is working harder to get there. So as a result, a little more harmonics/compression/tight bass. I loved my 50Watt marshall setup..but now i use a Fender champ on stage and turn it all to 10. And for me, that's a happy place ;).
if youre miked up all the time your setup would sound great, my band never miked up we did bars biker clubs restaurants parties with just a foldback monitor for my vocals i could fit all my PA and stuff in my pickup but i always travelled with a spare head in case my main one blew a valve at a gig.a quadbox pushes a lot of air and really rounds the sound out nicely in a three piece. a combo or two speaker set up couldnt do that plus you get bottom end with an "A" quad box whereas a little amp no way, but for recording or miking up its a lot different.
JD Simo routinely runs/ran dimed 100w Marshall Plexis in small venues and people walk out alive. It's all about that guitar volume control and pick attack.
Because this isn't a new amp as far as the design is concerned it's a JTM-45 and JTM-45's don't have a loop. If you put a loop in it then it isn't a JTM-45 anymore. Most people looking to buy one of these want as close to the original spec as current safety laws allow. There are tons of amps out there that have a loop if that's what people want. But not everyone does.
+Nigel Cassidy Well, I do not agree. Loop should be a plus and it would satisfy much more buyers. If you don't want the loop, just don't use it. There are many amps that have clear loops, no difference in tone. And, by the way, other old amps (Plexi, JCM...) didn't have a loop originally, but the reissue have. And, come on... The JTM is not a clean amp. If you use it crancked, you just can't get any volume boost for solos. Using a pedal in input you just get more gain. Anyway, it is jut my opinion.
Well we all have different needs. In my opinion there is no need to put a loop on a vintage reissue amp. There are tons of amps out there for people who want a loop. Those of us who want a vintage spec JTM-45 don't. As for a clean amp, The JTM-45 is an amazing clean amp. there are very few gigs these days where you can crank one of these without getting hassle off the sound guy. if you need a solo boost you simply do it the old way... the guitars volume control. If you really need a loop (and i do have amps with loops too) then looking at vintage reissues isn't really the place to be. Just my opinion too. Take care man.
I agree. The only reason "gear geeks" dislike them is because they aren't built by hand anymore,but they sound just as good as thy always have. If they were made by hand they would cost x2 more than 2k
Kate Andrews I think the point is, the clones are made like the vintage ones. (Turret board handwired construction) at a lower price than the Marshall re issue with a PCB board (Not 2x more). It doesn't mean they are better sounding, that is always personal preference. But they are easier to modify.

Wayne Lewis agree with you if you’re talking about a fender bassman, other classic fender amps like deluxe reverb does not sound ballsy enough to even get close to that super beefy clean tone, very different.
A "joke" is is a little strong. However, I also like the idea of hand wired, in a historic kinda way. I'm a session player in Nashville, and have owned the hardwired, and PCB. But no one passes the blind fold test between PCB and HW. Some sound better than others, regardless of layout. These Marshall won many shoot outs, between Ceriatone, Metro, etc. They sound like Marshalls.. I have to admit, I was surprised, myself. But they're not a joke. They are, however, too pricey, new..

Greenbacks have a cone of death immediately in front. I recommend standing off to the side at about 45 degrees for the best tone.

why no bass at all? wouldnt you want to push the bass to get a bigger tone?
Usually, the tone gets muddy when you add much bass to distorsion

i got a mojotone jtm45...and cranked its tube distortion is nothing like the old marshalls..not a sweet tone at all.....however....put a tube screamer in front of it..and its "that sound" you want

That's the honest truth and disparity of the world we live in. Just google it. There's usually one on ebay $2000 AUD.
The Marshall JTM 45 costs 1999$. I bought one two years ago and I paid ~2000$ for the JTM and a 4x12 greenback box (Mr 1960 ax). Now it costs more!

no, played for 10 years in a three piece and i dont think i ever had it past about 2, but it sounded so perfect on all different types of music styles too.
+dji zzah If you're happy with this setup, with lots of headroom. Don't listen to me at all ;).
But if like a little more spongy amp feel. You might like this 30 watt jtm. Or even a Fender champ. You can turn them up just as loud, but the amp is working harder to get there. So as a result, a little more harmonics/compression/tight bass. I loved my 50Watt marshall setup..but now i use a Fender champ on stage and turn it all to 10. And for me, that's a happy place ;).
if youre miked up all the time your setup would sound great, my band never miked up we did bars biker clubs restaurants parties with just a foldback monitor for my vocals i could fit all my PA and stuff in my pickup but i always travelled with a spare head in case my main one blew a valve at a gig.a quadbox pushes a lot of air and really rounds the sound out nicely in a three piece. a combo or two speaker set up couldnt do that plus you get bottom end with an "A" quad box whereas a little amp no way, but for recording or miking up its a lot different.
JD Simo routinely runs/ran dimed 100w Marshall Plexis in small venues and people walk out alive. It's all about that guitar volume control and pick attack.

Because this isn't a new amp as far as the design is concerned it's a JTM-45 and JTM-45's don't have a loop. If you put a loop in it then it isn't a JTM-45 anymore. Most people looking to buy one of these want as close to the original spec as current safety laws allow. There are tons of amps out there that have a loop if that's what people want. But not everyone does.

Well, I do not agree. Loop should be a plus and it would satisfy much more buyers. If you don't want the loop, just don't use it. There are many amps that have clear loops, no difference in tone. And, by the way, other old amps (Plexi, JCM...) didn't have a loop originally, but the reissue have.
And, come on... The JTM is not a clean amp. If you use it crancked, you just can't get any volume boost for solos. Using a pedal in input you just get more gain.
Anyway, it is jut my opinion.
Well we all have different needs. In my opinion there is no need to put a loop on a vintage reissue amp. There are tons of amps out there for people who want a loop. Those of us who want a vintage spec JTM-45 don't. As for a clean amp, The JTM-45 is an amazing clean amp. there are very few gigs these days where you can crank one of these without getting hassle off the sound guy. if you need a solo boost you simply do it the old way... the guitars volume control. If you really need a loop (and i do have amps with loops too) then looking at vintage reissues isn't really the place to be.

The only reason "gear geeks" dislike them is because they aren't built by hand anymore,but they sound just as good as thy always have.
If they were made by hand they would cost x2 more than 2k

Kate Andrews I think the point is, the clones are made like the vintage ones. (Turret board handwired construction) at a lower price than the Marshall re issue with a PCB board (Not 2x more). It doesn't mean they are better sounding, that is always personal preference. But they are easier to modify.
The PCB boards invariably sound quieter too... less hum...you pays your money.

Wayne Lewis agree with you if you’re talking about a fender bassman, other classic fender amps like deluxe reverb does not sound ballsy enough to even get close to that super beefy clean tone, very different.

A "joke" is is a little strong. However, I also like the idea of hand wired, in a historic kinda way. I'm a session player in Nashville, and have owned the hardwired, and PCB. But no one passes the blind fold test between PCB and HW. Some sound better than others, regardless of layout. These Marshall won many shoot outs, between Ceriatone, Metro, etc. They sound like Marshalls.. I have to admit, I was surprised, myself. But they're not a joke. They are, however, too pricey, new..
They're on a PCB because it's more reliable and consistent.
