So many comments complaining about not being reliable for precision measurements after his restoration methods. How does that compare to the precision it had before he started? It was unusable. Precision is relative to the application. Most woodworking doesn't require 0.001" accuracy, so it would be fine for that use.

A polished mirror finish could have been achieved with FAR less effort than you put into it.
Electrolysis to remove the rust probably would have freed it up pretty quickly.
If not, then ATF definitely would have done.
After that it would have been a case of a quick blast with a BRASS wheel (not steel) and then a polish.

Nice effort on a frozen tool. I don't think I would rely on the precise readings from it anymore, but it still can be useful as a locked inside or outside measurement tool for transferring such locked abilities to something else. Not sure I would have tried to refurbish it myself. But nice work, all the same. Thumbs Up!

How to become yutuber-profanatorom? You need a little: necessarily blue gloves, a rotating brush, a curved screwdriver, sandpaper, and of course 40WD. The principles are simple - remove all corrosion down to bare metal and paint with supermarket spray paint. Patience is attached. Take a long time and painstakingly to shoot every step. The longer the better. The more useless the piece of iron, and the senselessness of the work, the better. You can pre-pour the whole thing with salt water, wait a week and start profanity. This will ease the suffering.

You cannot have finished it there, if you would have sealed the rust off with tannin, cleaned up the rest of the discoloration, polished it up a little bit, possibly color filled the numbers so that it would be easier to read, you took what could have been a beautiful tool restoration and just did the bare minimum with the wrong tools

repairing that thing and cleaning the edges and slide faces with wetstones was a freaking nightmare

After that, I'd use a brass brush instead of a steel brush, because of a gentler abrasiveness of the brass rather then steel. Sorry, but I don't like your work. You almost destroyed a nice old precision tool.
